Memphis gets much needed boost with Kansas State transfer Nae’Qwan Tomlin

Penny Hardaway and Memphis add an experienced frontcourt player in Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who should be eligible right away after transferring from Kansas State.

Former Kansas State forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin wasted little time finding a program to play for in the final semester of his college basketball career, committing to Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers on Tuesday, according to ESPN.

Tomlin was dismissed from the basketball program at Kansas State last week, ending a long saga that began when he was arrested in late October for brawling at a bar and suspended. He is expected to graduate this week and be eligible to suit up for the Tigers in the spring semester.

The 6’10 forward from New York spent multiple years playing Junior College ball before breaking out for Jerome Tang and the Wildcats last year, starting 36 games and averaging 10.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 27.3 minutes per night.

Memphis is one of the oldest teams in college basketball and in Tomlin they gain even more experience. Tomlin will help shore up a frontcourt that learned 27-year-old center DeAndre Williams was ineligible just before the season began, and who were without Jordan Brown against Texas A&M over the weekend.

Memphis is 7-2 on the season heading into a matchup on Saturday against undefeated Clemson, followed by No. 22 Virginia on Tuesday.

MSU basketball reportedly showing interest in KSU transfer Nae’Qwan Tomlin

Could MSU basketball add a key piece to their roster to help break them out of their early season slump?

Could Michigan State basketball add a key piece to its roster to help break it out of an early season slump?

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, the Spartans have reportedly reached out to former Kansas State forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin. Michigan State is one of the numerous big-time programs to show interest in Tomlin, including Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, Indiana, Xavier, Ohio State, Purdue, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Villanova and Auburn.

Tomlin was dismissed from the Kansas State program this week after being suspended for the season to date due to his arrest for “disorderly conduct; brawling or fighting” at a local sports bar. Tomlin started 36 games for the Wildcats last season and averaged 10.4 points per game.

Tomlin would be eligible to start playing during the spring semester (i.e. January) because he is expected to graduate from Kansas State this month.

Kansas State’s Nae’Qwan Tomlin had some delicious NCAA tournament trash talk for Kentucky

Kansas State does NOT sound too concerned about playing Kentucky on Sunday.

No. 3 Kansas State does not sound all that worried to take on No. 6 Kentucky on Sunday in the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament’s round of 32.

While discussing the upcoming tournament matchup, Kansas State forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin did not seem like his team was all that concerned about playing against Kentucky’s style of basketball, per 247Sports writer Aaron Gershon.

Tomlin gave Kentucky star forward Oscar Tshiebwe his deserved flowers for what he can do on the court. Other than that, the higher-seeded Wildcats don’t seem all that worried about playing the lower-seeded Wildcats.

As the old saying goes, we’ll know soon enough if Tomlin’s confidence is warranted. We’ll also know if Kentucky catches wind of this trash talk.

Well, Kansas State-Kentucky is going to be a fun one, if only because you’ve got a legacy program in Kentucky trying to prove itself against a higher-seeded Kansas State.

Will Tomlin’s words come back to haunt his team? Are they a sign of what’s to come? Answers will be known soon enough.
