MSU vs. Charleston Southern basketball: Three Things To Watch

Michigan State welcomes Charleston Southern to the Breslin Center tomorrow. Here are three things to watch in this game.

Michigan State welcomes Charleston Southern basketball to the Breslin Center tomorrow for a 6:30 P.M. game. Charleston Southern is 1-3 fresh off of a loss to Dayton, 90-61. Michigan State, on the other hand, is 2-1 comes off a close 76-73 victory over Seton Hall.

Here are three things to watch in this game:

Dontrell Shuler

Dontrell Shuler is without a doubt the best player on the Charleston Southern basketball roster. The 6″2 sophomore guard has seemingly made a leap after last year. In the 2018 season, Shuler only averaged 10.9 points. So far, he’s averaging 20 points on the year.

If you remember, Seton Hall guard Myles Powell gave Michigan State fits. Granted, Powell is a senior and looked like one of the best players in all of college basketball. It is possible for Shuler to also be a problem. He is another small guard and can lure Winston into foul trouble early.

Watch the matchup Tom Izzo puts out against Shuler. I predict Rocket Watts will get a ton of minutes guarding Dontrell Shuler. This could be a good test for Watts on the defensive end.

Newcomer Success

All year, fans have wondered who would be the impressive newcomer. Malik Hall filled this role against Seton Hall and went absolutely bananas. Hall played 19 minutes and made the most of each. He ended the game with 17 points and went 7-7 from the field including three shots from beyond the arc.

It is highly likely Malik Hall gets even more minutes against Charleston Southern. It is highly unlikely he is 100% perfect from the field again, but,he can still contribute well. Especially if his three-point shooting persists. MSU needs a big man that can space the floor.

Guard Depth

Rocket Watts is slowly developing his confidence whereas Foster Loyer looks a bit timid. Outside of Winston, MSU seems to lack Guard depth. Kyle Ahrens just does not look right out on the floor. The Spartans need a Guard to step up in this game, who will it be?

Fans have been hard on Foster Loyer given that he was so good in high school. I think he can still grow this year. Against Seton Hall, Loyer looked a bit more confident. He hit a nice three early in the game and later converted on a layup with the defense draped all over him.

I’m still high on Rocket Watts as well. He ended the Seton Hall victory with eight points, shooting 3-8 from the field. He also grabbed five boards and two steals. Right now, Watts should keep shooting and focus on defensive production. Worst case scenario, he misses shots but comes up with multiple steals in each game.

You can catch this game on Big Ten Network at 6:30 P.M. tomorrow. Cheer on the Spartan Dawgs during this game.

MSU Football’s blowout loss to Michigan: Three Key Takeaways

Michigan State football suffered an incredibly tragic defeat at the hands of Michigan, 44-10. Here are three key takeaways from this game

Michigan State Football suffered an a horrific loss at the hands of interstate rival Michigan, 44-10. The Spartans kept it relatively close at first, but, the Wolverines took over in the third quarter. This lead to a landslide victory for the University of Michigan.

Here are three key takeaways from this game:

Paradigm Shift

Remember the start of this season? When Mark Dantonio surpassed Hugh Daugherty as the most winningest coach in Spartan history. Those days now seem long gone. Nearly every Michigan State fan has turned on Dantonio.

There are certain fans that want Dantonio to retire, others want Dantonio to be fired. Does it have to be this way? I understand the frustration. He had a chance to clean house in the offseason and start fresh but did not do so. Does his success not warrant any good faith from fans?

It is possible to chalk up this season to the coordinator staff, injuries, and lack of talent. The Ohio State loss clearly displayed the disparity in talent between the Buckeyes and the Spartans. The offensive line is absolutely depleted and Joe Bachie is suspended. WR Darrell Stewart went down with an injury just as WR CJ Hayes came back.

I know it is easy to succumb to frustration, but, coaching decisions must be backed by logic and rational thoughts. Do not think about just the present, instead consider the future. Who will replace Dantonio? Are they a better coach? If not, then you set yourself up for failure by firing him.

The Rivalry Is Strong

Michigan and Michigan State offer up one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports. The players do not like each other, the fans do not like each other. This was on full display yesterday. The game started out chippy and it only grew from there.

Later in the game, Jacub Panasiuk hit Shea Patterson late and was flagged for roughing the passer. The referees ejected Panasiuk from the game for this hit. No doubt this was the culmination of frustration for Michigan State.

[jwplayer ptG62HdJ]

In between the chippy play, there were celebrations galore. Cody White was flagged for taunting after a nice catch over a Michigan defender. On the other hand, Michigan WR Tarik Black was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after flexing on Josh Butler. This rivalry has not taken a step back whatsoever.

Curtain Call For Brian Lewerke

I’ve spent almost all year defending Brian Lewerke. Last week, I gave this up. I cannot do this anymore. Lewerke is not a terrible QB, but, he is certainly not a winning QB. He had an absolutely horrendous outing against the Wolverines.

Michigan QB Shea Patterson won the QB duel yesterday against Lewerke. Patterson dropped 384 yards, completing 24 of his 33 pass attempts. This lead to Patterson throwing four touchdown passes, three more than Lewerke. Brian only put up 166 yards, completing 17 of his 30 attempts.

It is not easy to bench a senior QB and maybe that won’t even happen. Personally, I think it’s time for Rocky Lombardi and Theo Day to get some snaps. Especially late in a blowout game. These reps can help shape the offseason perspective and QB scenario moving forward. It’s time to think about the future.

With a bye last week, the Wolverines have had two weeks to prepare for the Spartans. Michigan (7-2, 4-2) has taken things in stride since a 28-21 loss to Penn State on Oct. 19. The Wolverines have outscored opponents 83-21, including a 45-14 win vs. Notre Dame on Oct. 26. Michigan dominated Maryland on Nov. 2 in a 38-7 win. Nine different receivers had at least one catch and on defense, the Wolverines were led by Josh Metellus, who had eight tackles, and Joshua Uche, who had two sacks.

Nothing is going right for Michigan State (4-5, 2-4). The team took a tight 37-34 loss to Illinois last weekend. The Spartans surrendered a 21-point third-quarter lead and were outscored 27-3 in the fourth quarter. That was done even though the Spartans tallied 526 yards of offense, including 275 rushing yards. Quarterback Brian Lewerke had a tough night, throwing three interceptions and just one touchdown. Elijah Collins and Cody White were bright spots for the Spartans. Collins ran for 170 yards, while White had 128 yards receiving. The Spartans are likely to be without star linebacker Joe Bachie, who has appealed his suspension by the Big Ten for failing a drug test.

The Wolverines won last year’s meeting, 21-7, in East Lansing and have won two of the last three games. Michigan leads the all-time series, 70-36-5, but has dropped its last two home games to the Spartans.

Pick ‘Em: Our picks for MSU vs. Michigan and other college football games

Do we think MSU can bounce back in a big way this week?

Michigan State football needs a win in a big way.

After starting the season 4-1, the Spartans have dropped four straight games, each loss perhaps worse and more painful than the last. Now, the biggest game on the schedule awaits.

MSU travels to Ann Arbor to take on rival No. 14 Michigan (Noon, FOX). Do the Spartans have what it takes to bounce back and take down the Wolverines? Let’s see what our staff thinks.

Wil Hunter (40-18)

Michigan 24 – Michigan State 14

I’d love to be wrong here, but I have a tough time seeing Michigan State pull this one out. The Spartans are absolutely reeling right now. They can’t get off a losing streak. They’re really banged up. Questions are swirling about the future of the coach and program. It’s a mess.

I think the fact that it’s Michigan buys MSU something. The Spartans will come out fast and play well. At this point of the season though, Michigan is just a better football team.

Andrew Brewster (41-17)

Michigan State 14 @ Michigan 17

I hate to say it folks but this will probably be a bad weekend for Michigan State fans. There is just not enough evidence to support picking the Spartans over the Wolverines and that is so incredibly painful. Michigan State looked like they were on the right track during the beginning of the Illinois game. Boy, that faded away quickly. Now, it seems their season is pretty empty. Not a lot of hope over here.

Game Recap: MSU basketball Squeaks Out Win Over Seton Hall 76-73

Michigan State basketball barely won against Seton Hall 76-73 in an absolutely heart-stopping game. Here is a quick recap of this game.

Michigan State basketball barely won against Seton Hall 76-73 in an absolute barn burner. Seton Hall PG Myles Powell put on an absolute show but could not lead his team to victory. Instead, the Spartans walked away with a well-fought win.

Here is a quick recap of this game:

First Half

Cassius Winston got the Spartans going early on in this game. He scored a beautiful three with space and it was the first three for MSU. Winston also swung a beautiful pass to Thomas Kithier who then buried a three himself.

Foster Loyer saw more minutes than usual due to Winston’s early foul trouble. With eight minutes left in the first half, Winston committed another bad foul. As a result, Loyer came into the game and took over some extra PG minutes. Coach Tom Izzo was irate with Loyer before a TV timeout early on.  Later on, Loyer had a nice layup with a defender draped over his back.

Seton Hall came to play. Myles Powell played tonight despite his severe ankle sprain and he started off hot. Plus, he received a few favorable foul calls. Powell has limitless range even while absolutely smothered. He lead the game with 13 points at the half. Michigan State ended the half leading only by 3 points, 30-27.

Note, Aaron Henry appeared to roll his ankle before the end of the first half. Luckily, he came back to play in the second half and seemed okay.

Second Half

Early in the second half, Xavier Tillman recorded his third foul. The game was tied 40-40 until Malik Hall scored his first points as a Spartan with a beautiful three-pointer. Hall followed that up with another bucket, this time at the rim.

Myles Powell came back and scored on multiple possessions to increase his total to 21 on the night. Malik Hall did not care. Hall hit another three which is huge for Michigan State. They really need some three-point shooting beyond just Winston.

Things got dicey for the Spartans with 10 minutes left in the game. Powell took a flamethrower to the Michigan State defense. Every shot from Powell went in. He even hit an off-balance three. Lucky for the Spartans, Malik Hall continued to pour it on with a dunk and an open three. The game still tied, now at 55-55.

In the last ten minutes, there were multiple lead changes. Myles Powell remained a walking bucket. He hit multiple threes to bring Seton Hall out in front. Rocket Watts hit a transition three to bring Michigan State within two. Two plays later, Winston hit his own transition three to pull the Spartans ahead.

With less than 25 seconds left, Malik Hall finished at the rim with contact. One may argue he deserved an and one. Seton Hall could not score as Tillman blocked Sandro Mamukelashvili at the rim. Winston was fouled and missed his free throw. Luckily, he had a chance later and hit two free throws in a row, giving MSU a three-point victory over Seton Hall.

Winston lead MSU in points with 21 on the night and Powell lead Seton Hall with 37. Michigan State basketball plays again on Nov. 18 against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. You can catch this game on the Big Ten Network.

Former Spartan Malik McDowell sentenced to three months in jail

Former Michigan State and Seattle Seahawks football player Malik McDowell has been sentenced to 3 months in Oakland County Jail.

[jwplayer hc9PhoKp]

The sad saga of Malik McDowell’s time since leaving Michigan State continues, as he was just sentenced to three months in an Oakland County jail. He will also have to write three essays as well. The former Spartan Football recruit from 2014 pleaded guilty in October to two charges of resisting arrest, possessing a stolen vehicle, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Finally, he’ll also have three years of probation.

It’s a little unique to have McDowell write the essays in addition to his time in jail. Here are the topics: finding the meaning in life other than committing crimes; the importance of respecting the rule of law and the principles of the Declaration of Independence and how your behavior undermines them.

“There are still (NFL) teams interested,” McDowell’s attorney Mitchell Ribitwer said. “So if he can get himself together, maybe he can be in the NFL or XFL or something. Personally, I think he’s committed to it. He’s a nice young man.”
