Michigan State football kicker named a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week

Don’t look now, but Michigan State football has a rising star on their hands, and it’s their kicker. In a week where Jonathan Kim set a Michigan State record on his way to being named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week, Kim also received another honor, being named one of the Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week for week eight of the college football season.

The Lou Groza Award is given to the top kicker in college football, and each week they honor three players who stood out in the position.

Jonathan Kim was an easy addition this week, as he hit a remarkable six field goals in the win over Iowa.

This week, the list included:

  • Jonathan Kim, Michigan State
  • Damon Ramos, LSU
  • Peyton Woodring, Georgia

Michigan State kicker named Big Ten Specialist of the Week

Jonathan Kim is your Big Ten Specialist of the Week

If you set a school record, you should probably win some type of weekly award. I would imagine if this one didn’t go to Jonathan Kim, the Big Ten offices would have gotten some nasty emails, at the very least. On Monday, Michigan State football kicker Jonathan Kim was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week for his performance against Iowa.

Kim booted six field goals and two extra points for a total of 20 points in the win over Iowa, including a long of 55 yards.

Tom Izzo compares two MSU basketball freshmen to two Michigan State legends

Tom Izzo compares two MSU basketball freshmen to two Michigan State legends

Michigan State basketball has a few extremely talented freshmen on the team this season, and two of them, Jase Richardson and Kur Teng, play the guard position, and Tom Izzo had some lofty comparisons to two MSU legends for them on Thursday in his weekly press conference.

For Jase Richardson, Izzo compared him to Sam Vincent. Kur Teng got a comparison to Shawn Respert. Those are two of the better guards in Michigan State history, so quite a comparison and high praise for them.

Chris Solari posted the original quote on his X.com account here.

Michigan State football linebacker reacts to yet another night game for the Spartans

After the sixth night game of the season was announced for MSU, one linebacker took to social media to reminisce about noon games

Michigan State football’s match-up against rival Michigan will be their eighth game of the 2024 football season. We found out today that it will also be their sixth night game of the season, and their fifth straight game at night.

While it was a cool novelty to see the Spartans under the lights, it’s starting to feel a little like overkill to some fans, and even one player, linebacker Darius Snow, took to social media to express his feelings that he may have taken noon games for granted:

Michigan State basketball out of top-25 in first AP Poll of the 2024-25 season

Michigan State basketball is outside the top-25 in the first AP poll of the 2024-25 season

Last year, Michigan State basketball entered the 2023-24 season ranked as the No. 4 team in the country in the AP poll. This year, the Spartans will be on the outside looking in as they didn’t make the top-25 in the 2024-25 preseason AP poll.

While MSU didn’t place in the top-25, they did receive the seventh most votes of any program not in the top-25. The Spartans received 29 votes from the associated press.

Tom Izzo, Xavier Booker, and Jase Richardson address media after MSU vs. Northern Michigan game

Tom Izzo, Xavier Booker, and Jase Richardson addressed the media after the MSU vs. Northern Michigan preseason game

Michigan State basketball won a basketball game yesterday. The Spartans beat a scrappy Northern Michigan team 70-53 in Tom Izzo’s big return game in the Superior Dome in what was an amazing college basketball atmosphere for a preseason game.

After the game, we got to hear from Izzo, but we also heard from star sophomore Xavier Booker, and, interestingly, incoming freshman Jase Richardson. Booker and Richardson talked about their experience touring their coach’s old stomping grounds, how they are feeling heading into the season, and more.

Mark Dantonio talks to media about being inducted into Spartan Stadium Ring of Honor

Mark Dantonio talks to media about being inducted into Spartan Stadium Ring of Honor

Back in April, it was announced that Michigan State football would induct former Michigan State football head coach Mark Dantonio into the Spartan Stadium Ring of Honor, honoring some of the greatest Spartans in MSU athletics history.

Some key takeaways:

  • Says this honor is a ‘program award’ and hopes his players feel that they are part of this moment.
  • When asked if he still hates the losses more than he enjoys the wins, he smiled and said he enjoys some of his wins over Michigan.
  • Said he thinks his induction also includes his contributions when he was part of Nick Saban’s staff and helped put MSU back on the map as a football school.
  • Said he likes the direction of Jonathan Smith’s team and said they are resilient and the future is bright.
