One of the game’s best rivalries will again be renewed with massive implications on the line.

Michigan State hockey won an overtime thriller against Western Michigan on Friday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Only a few hours later, Michigan used a strong third period to edge out a win over North Dakota to also advance to the second round and setup a matchup with the Spartans.

Michigan State holds a 4-to-1 advantage over the Wolverines this season, including a Big Ten Tournament Championship win last weekend.

Faceoff between the Spartans and Wolverines is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will take place in Maryland Heights, Mo. and will be televised on ESPN2.

MSU Hockey receives No. 1 seed, will face Western Michigan in NCAA Tournament

Michigan State hockey is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012

Michigan State hockey is going back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade.

The Spartans received a No. 1 seed in the Maryland Heights Region and will face Western Michigan on Friday evening. The Spartans and Broncos will take the ice at 5 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPNU.

The other matchup in the Spartans’ region is between North Dakota and Michigan. The winners of the two first round matchups will play for a trip to the Frozen Four on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Michigan State won both the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament championships this year. This is the Spartans’ first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2012.

If the NCAA Tournament started today, Michigan State hockey would be safely in the field.

The Spartans currently sit as the No. 7 overall team in the country, which slots them as a No. 2 seed in the Sioux Falls, S.D. Region in USCHO.com’s updated bracketology post. The Spartans would face No. 3 seed Providence in the current projected NCAA Tournament bracket from USCHO.com.

Michigan State is one of four Big Ten teams in USCHO.com’s bracket projection. The other teams included are Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
