The top five Rutgers players to watch in the season’s final four games

As the Scarlet Knights inch closer to the conclusion of the 2023 season, which five players will stand out in the season’s final four games?

As the Scarlet Knights inch closer to the conclusion of the 2023 season, which five players will stand out in the season’s final four games? Rutgers has games against No. 3 Ohio State, Iowa, No. 10 Penn State, and Maryland remaining on their regular season schedule.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has his team at 6-2, the best start since the Scarlet Knights started 7-1 in 2012. Also, the Scarlet Knights’ six wins are the most in a season since going 8-5 in 2014.

The Scarlet Knights are playing hard for Schiano and are buying into his philosophy of running the football and playing tough defense. For their efforts this season, the Scarlet Knights matched a program-high three Big Ten wins in a season, which was done in 2014, 2017, and 2020.

Can the Scarlet Knights capture a fourth Big Ten win to break their program record? Below are the five players to watch in the season’s final four games.

Why didn’t Bo Mascoe, Evan Simon and Moses Walker play for Rutgers football on Saturday?

There were three new names to the Rutgers football availability report this week.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — There was a trio of new names for Rutgers football on the pregame availability report released on Saturday. None of the three names, it appears, would potentially be out too long.

The report, released before Saturday afternoon’s 52-3 win by Rutgers over Wagner, had the following three notable additions as unavailable for the game:

Head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] was asked specifically about these three players and the reason why they weren’t available. Schiano started his answer by clarifying that the pregame release wasn’t purely injury-related:

“Well, it’s not an injury report. It’s an availability report. So don’t always attribute it to injury. Evan had tweaked something a little bit late in the week and he could have played, but we saw it as an opportunity there to get (Ajani Sheppard) in, and Evan to move on to next week and be ready to go,” Schiano said following the game.

“Then there’s some other things that are not always injury-related. Moses was injury-related. I think he’s going to be fine. Bo was not injury-related. He’s got a little something going on NCAA-wise that we’re trying to work through, so we’re continuing to work.”

Walker missed all of last year following an injury that he suffered in the spring.

Schiano mentioned Sheppard, who saw his first action as a true freshman. A former three-star recruit, Sheppard was 2-for-2 for 23 yards and had one run for 10 yards.

He showed some good pocket presence and poise when he came in late in the fourth quarter.

Rutgers football: Greg Schiano gives injury updates on Moses Walker, Mo Toure and Sam Brown

There is some good news on the health front for Rutgers football this spring.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Some pretty big pieces to the Rutgers football defense are on the field and practicing. And one projected starter on offense seems to be making some steady progress as well.

Moses Walker and Mo Toure, both injured last spring, were a full-go on Tuesday nearly a year after their respective injuries. Toure, an All-Big Ten caliber linebacker, was expected to be a starter last year for Rutgers. And Walker, a former four-star recruit, was impressive last spring.

So it was good news when, on Tuesday, head coach Greg Schiano said that Toure and Walker were both on the field. And Sam Brown, who became a starter midway through his freshman season, was making progress from his season-ending injury late last October.

“Well, Moses Walker and Mo are full go. Sam is working his way back in. But they’re all like I said – two are full go and when I say they’re full go, they’re not 100% they’re working their way back to being but  I’m very encouraged there,” Schiano said on Tuesday.

“And then Sam is getting better by the day. So he’s taken a lot of mental reps and kind of what we call enacting behind the play and that kind of stuff.”

Brown was a four-star recruit out of Philadelphia. In his first collegiate start last year against Indiana, Brown had 101 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.

Watch: Rutgers football commit Moses Walker delivers a massive tackle

Rutgers football verbal Moses Walker delivers a huge tackle last week for Erasmus Hall.

Moses Walker delivers the kind of hits that could well see the Rutgers football commit make an immediate impact on Saturdays.

The Erasmus Hall linebacker, a consensus four-star, absolutely leveled an opposing ball carrier this past Saturday in a 21-6 win over Midwood. Walker has been tremendous all season with this latest hit showing his strength and power along with an innate instinct for the position.

On the play, Walker steps into the gap and levels a clothesline tackle with one arm. He gets up, seemingly doing a ‘CHOP’ motion with his one arm.

It was a college play for sure from one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects in the class of 2022. Walker is a huge part of a very solid recruiting class for Rutgers.

Walker is ranked the No. 1 player in New York according to Rivals and the No. 162 player in the nation.

Erasmus Hall is 9-0 on the season. They play Wagner on Saturday in the New York PSAL State Tournament.

The Erasmus Hall defense has been tremendous this year, giving up a combined six points over the last two games.

What recruits will visit Rutgers football for the Michigan State game?

Rutgers football is hosting a number of top recruits from the 2022 and 2023 recruiting class.

While last weekend against Ohio State was the big one for recruiting for Rutgers football, Saturday’s game with No. 11 Michigan State certainly isn’t lacking for star power. A number of top recruits will be at SHI Stadium for the showdown.

Rutgers will host a mix of committed and non-committed players as they look to close out the 2022 recruiting cycle strong and begin with some of the talent on the 2023 radar.

Several priority Rutgers verbal commits such as Erasmus Hall linebacker Moses Walker, a four-star recruit and one of the top players in New York, will be on hand. He will be joined by several other members of the 2022 recruiting class.

A look at some of the players who will be at Saturday’s game:

Rutgers commit trolls Penn State in announcement video

Penn State football was trolled by a future Rutgers linebacker in his commitment announcement

Penn State has been crushing it on the recruiting trail for the Class of 2022, but the Nittany Lions came up short on a recruiting effort to land one of the top recruits in the state of New York. Instead, James Franklin and his staff were trolled in quite a mighty way by four-star linebacker Moses Walker.

Walker announced his commitment on Thursday evening, with Penn State being in the final two along with Rutgers. It seemed expected that Walker would make his commitment to the Scarlet Knights, but his announcement video played a fast one on Penn State.

In a splashy announcement video, an image of the Nittany Lion logo was being etched in a laser light, suggesting Walker was announcing his commitment to Penn State. But after a few seconds, an image of Walker in a Rutgers football uniform takes over and his commitment to Greg Schiano and his program became official.

But the level of this troll game was escalated by Walker going so far as to tag Franklin and assistant recruiting coordinator Alan Zemaitis in the tweet.

This is pretty unnecessary, obviously, and perhaps it speaks more to the type of character of the Rutgers program being pulled together by Schiano than anything else. But perhaps that is just what Rutgers is looking for anyway; players with all the confidence in the world to create a stir with a program they are clearly trying to chase in the Big Ten pecking order.

To their credit, Rutgers has been stringing together a very solid recruiting class in Schiano’s first full recruiting cycle back with the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers has the No. 12 recruiting class in the nation according to the most up-to-date composite team rankings produced by 247 Sports. Penn State currently is back up to No. 2 after a brief step back to No. 3 in the last week. Ohio State remains No. 1 overall.

But questions do remain. Was Walker seriously considering Penn State as he approached his decision? Or was this all part of his master plan all along? Whatever the case, we’ll see what kind of impact Walker has when he lines up against the Nittany Lions in the coming years. Don’t think this tweet won’t be remembered by those in a Penn State uniform.

And, to be fair, it’s not as though Penn State commits haven’t played similar games with the Big Ten opposition. So maybe what goes around comes around?

Four-star linebacker to choose between Penn State and Rutgers

Four-star linebacker to choose between Penn State and Big Ten program today

Decision day is here for four-star linebacker Moses Walker. The top-rated recruit in the state of New York announced this week he will be making his official commitment announcement on Thursday evening, with Penn State in the final running in a head-to-head recruiting battle with another Big Ten East program.

Walker will choose between Penn State and Rutgers. There is no question Walker would be a great addition to an already loaded Class of 2022 for the Nittany Lions. However, the crystal ball predictions on 247 Sports are favoring Rutgers as Walker’s decision arrives. And given how many unofficial visits Walker has made to Rutgers, it certainly feels as though Penn State is up against the odds in this particular recruiting battle.

Walker made an official visit to Penn State on June 25. Earlier in the month, Walker made an unofficial visit to Rutgers as his first visit once the NCAA lifted the extended dead period. USC had previously been considered to be in the running, but it looks like the Trojans are in the rearview mirror.
