Bo Mascoe knows patience and bowl experience will help him compete for playing time with Rutgers

Bo Mascoe is making strides this offseason for Rutgers football

Bo Mascoe made just one appearance last season for Rutgers football, but his performance in that game is a building block for his development this offseason.

A true freshman last season, Mascoe was ineligible for much of the year, but was finally cleared to play in time for Rutgers to take on Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. He had two tackles to help Rutgers to their first postseason win since 2014.

Mascoe is being projected for a bigger role this year in the defense. The experience in the bowl game against Miami certainly showed his potential and upside.

“It was very exciting to play with the guys,” Mascoe told Rutgers Wire last week.

“I’m just trying to come in this year, get better, work on my craft.

“It was amazing…playing with the guys I was here with, practicing with. I felt good but I’ve definitely got more to work on.”

One of the reasons why Mascoe is going to be able to compete for playing time is the loss of Max Melton from the defense.

A lockdown cornerback, Melton is heading to the NFL draft and is even getting some first-round buzz.

Last year, Mascoe was able to sit and watch Melton at work. It was a good mentorship opportunity for the freshman defensive back.

“Definitely watching him in a game and he also really taught me in the meetings – he was always on me like an older guy, you know?” Mascoe said.

“Just always teaching me.”

Mascoe was a three-star recruit out of high school with a strong offer list that included Boston College and Iowa State.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Mascoe is a strong, talented player with good discipline. After all, his father is a football coach in Florida.

Chad Mascoe is an offensive coordinator with Osceola High School (Osceola, Florida).

“Me and my dad – he’s a high school coach. I mean, we don’t really talk too much about football outside of the field,” Bo Mascoe said..

“It’s great, though, that he used to be my coach. I played a little offense (and) he was OC it was kind of fun.”

Growing up in a football family (his brother Chad Mascoe Jr. is a quarterback at Campbell) means that Bo Mascoe knew what he was looking for in a college.

“I picked Rutgers – I loved what they were building here. And I do want to be a part of it,” Bo Mascoe said.

“I love the coaches, the coaches, the people around here. I feel like they are alike, I like culture and things and I feel like I have that here.”

Why didn’t Bo Mascoe, Evan Simon and Moses Walker play for Rutgers football on Saturday?

There were three new names to the Rutgers football availability report this week.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — There was a trio of new names for Rutgers football on the pregame availability report released on Saturday. None of the three names, it appears, would potentially be out too long.

The report, released before Saturday afternoon’s 52-3 win by Rutgers over Wagner, had the following three notable additions as unavailable for the game:

Head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] was asked specifically about these three players and the reason why they weren’t available. Schiano started his answer by clarifying that the pregame release wasn’t purely injury-related:

“Well, it’s not an injury report. It’s an availability report. So don’t always attribute it to injury. Evan had tweaked something a little bit late in the week and he could have played, but we saw it as an opportunity there to get (Ajani Sheppard) in, and Evan to move on to next week and be ready to go,” Schiano said following the game.

“Then there’s some other things that are not always injury-related. Moses was injury-related. I think he’s going to be fine. Bo was not injury-related. He’s got a little something going on NCAA-wise that we’re trying to work through, so we’re continuing to work.”

Walker missed all of last year following an injury that he suffered in the spring.

Schiano mentioned Sheppard, who saw his first action as a true freshman. A former three-star recruit, Sheppard was 2-for-2 for 23 yards and had one run for 10 yards.

He showed some good pocket presence and poise when he came in late in the fourth quarter.

Tampa running back Justin Thurman is offered by Rutgers football

Rutgers football offered Tampa running back Justin Thurman.

One of the top running backs in Florida was offered this week by Rutgers football.

Class of 2025 recruit Justin Thurman from Jesuit (Tampa, FL) pulled in an offer from Rutgers on Tuesday. A 6-foot, 170-pound running back, the Scarlet Knights join a recruitment that also includes Kansas and Tennesee.

He is an elusive athlete with good speed (Thurman also runs track). He also runs with power and good balance.

Jesuit went 9-5 last season.

Thurman tweeted about the offer from Rutgers football on Tuesday night. He was offered by Tennessee earlier in the day.

Since the return of head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] three years ago, Rutgers has been recruiting Tampa heavily. As a former head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Schiano’s name certainly resonates around the area.

The 2023 recruiting class, which featured 18 total commits, had a heavy Florida flavor. Six of the players who are part of this class are from Florida.

Included in this group of six were several standouts including running back [autotag]Jashon Benjamin[/autotag], defensive back [autotag]Bo Mascoe[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Abram Wright[/autotag].

Rutgers is in the midst of their spring practice, which began on Tuesday.
