Warner Bros. and NetherRealm are making a Mortal Kombat reboot

Warner Bros. Games and NeatherRealm Studios finally announced their new Mortal Kombat game, and it’s Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot

Warner Bros. Games and NeatherRealm Studios finally announced their new Mortal Kombat game after months of teasing, and it’s not Mortal Kombat 12. The new fighting game is Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot of the series that takes place in an alternate Mortal Kombat universe, with fresh modes and new fighting systems, though what exactly “new fighting systems” means, NetherRealm didn’t say.

Mortal Kombat 1’s release date is Sep. 19, 2023, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and even Switch. Those who preorder the premium edition or the Kollector’s Edition will get access beginning  Sep. 14, 2023. The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and somehow Switch.

The team published a debut trailer alongside the announcement, though bear in mind that, like with other modern Mortal Kombat games, the action and deaths are significantly more violent than your usual fighting game and most shooters.

These are the playable characters we know of so far:

  • Liu Kang
  • Scorpion
  • Sub-Zero
  • Raiden
  • Kung Lao
  • Kitana
  • Mileena
  • Shang Tsung
  • Johnny Cage

NetherRealm said  “many other” characters would be available, though Keanu Reeves definitely won’t be one of them. They stopped short of saying who most of the post-launch characters might be, but one is Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung is a pre-order-exclusive character, though if Mortal Kombat 1 is like previous games in the series, they’ll probably be available as DLC sometime after the game launches.

The base game will cost $69.99 on all platforms, while the premium edition will set you back $109.99. The Kollector’s Edition, which is only available for PS5 and Xbox, will cost $249.99. and comes with the game, early access, exclusive Johnny Cage and Liu Kang skins, early access to six post-launch characters, a Liu Kang sculpture, a steel case, three prints, and 2,700 Dragon Krystals – currency for the in-game shop.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a new mobile RPG coming next year

NetherRealm Studios is apparently “pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat” with Onslaught.

A brand-new Mortal Kombat is in the works, and it’s coming out relatively soon.

On Tuesday, NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a mobile RPG that’ll arrive sometime in 2023. It’ll emphasize cinematic storytelling and let players put together teams of fighters for massive real-time brawls. Outside of these light details, there’s no other information on Mortal Kombat: Onslaught thus far.

“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” Ed Boon, CCO of NetherRealm Studios, said in a press release. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

No firm release date for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught yet, but anyone eager to hear more can sign up on the game’s website. There’s also some artwork that you can check out below.

It’s been a few years since Mortal Kombat 11, the last mainline entry, came out. Some fans were hoping for a fully-fledged console and PC title, but they’ll have to keep waiting.

Outside the realm of video games, Warner Bros. is making another Mortal Kombat movie. Many consider the 2021 film as an all-time great adaptation. The same can’t be said for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which effectively killed the late 1990s live-action big screen series.

Mortal Kombat film sequel is reportedly bringing back the original director

Simon McQuoid will likely be in the director’s chair again for more high-octane fisticuffs.

Back in 2021, the Mortal Kombat film reboot quickly became known as a top-tier video game adaptation. As such, whispers of a follow-up have been floating around, and the movie is seemingly moving forward.

According to Deadline, director Simon McQuoid will return to direct the Mortal Kombat sequel. Details beyond this are sparse, likely because there hasn’t been much in the way of official announcements. However, reports from earlier this year claimed Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is involved in some capacity. Slater also has writing credits on Fantastic Four (2015) and Death Note (2017).

It’s no surprise that Warner Bros. would bring McQuoid back. Mortal Kombat far exceeded box office expectations, bringing in more than $83 million worldwide at the box office. That might not sound impressive from a glance, but remember: it came out in early 2021 when theaters were only just beginning to open up again during the pandemic.

Mortal Kombat was also a massive hit for HBO Max, where over 5.5 million households watched the film — outpacing the likes of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, among several others. It turns out that people really love ridiculously gory martial arts brawls. Go figure!

We don’t know if any of the first film’s cast will return for Mortal Kombat 2, but it’s probably a safe bet. The ones that didn’t have their heads pounded into a gooey mush, anyways.

A second Mortal Kombat film is in the works from Moon Knight’s writer

Test your might (again).

The Mortal Kombat  film reboot took theaters by storm last year, and Warner Brothers are moving ahead on a sequel.

A report from Deadline  confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2  is happening, with screenwriter Jeremy Slater already on board to pen the script. Not much else is known about the movie at this time, but 2021’s Mortal Kombat  is among the  best video game adaptations, so it’s exciting news nonetheless.

Slater’s writing credits include Marvel Studio’s upcoming  TV series Moon Knight, which debuts March 30 on Disney+. He didn’t work on Mortal Kombat  2021, but folks attached to the production are happy about his inclusion. Producer Todd Garner even shared a teaser image for Mortal Kombat 2  that you can check out below.

The sequel is likely a couple of years away, but in the meantime, Mortal Kombat 11  is free(ish) on several subscription services right now. For  PS4 and PS5 owners, PlayStation Now has the game for  the rest of January. Meanwhile, Game Pass subscribers get access to Mortal Kombat 11  on the  Xbox side of things  too.

Hopefully, Mortal Kombat 2  maintains the first movie’s level of quality and doesn’t end up as yet another  terrible video game adaptation. Perhaps this is the movie  The Rock was teasing — pure speculation on our part, mind you.

Mortal Kombat 11, Firewatch, and more coming to Game Pass this week

Xbox has just announced a slew of new titles coming to Game Pass this week, including Mortal Kombat 11, Firewatch, Broken Age, and more.

Microsoft has just announced the next batch of games coming to Game Pass. On top of beloved indies like Firewatch and Broken Age, the list also includes some heavier hitters like Mortal Kombat 11, all of which are set to hit the service this Thursday, Dec. 16.

These titles come on top of Game Pass’ already stacked lineup for December. As well as Halo Infinite’s highly anticipated launch last week, this month has seen the addition of games like Stardew Valley, Serious Sam 4, Among Us, and One Piece Pirate Warriors 4, the last of which we have been informed on good authority is excellent, but only if you read the manga first.

The full list of games coming to Xbox’s subscription service this month – including titles that have already been added to Game Pass – is as follows.

Games available on Game Pass now

Master Chief in Halo Infinite

Anvil (console/PC) – Dec. 2

Archvale (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 2

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (console/PC) – Dec. 2

Lawn Mowing Simulator (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 2

Rubber Bandits (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 2

Stardew Valley (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 2

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 2

Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 7

Serious Sam 4 (console/PC) – Dec. 7

Halo Infinite (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 8

One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 9

Aliens: Fireteam Elite (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 14

Games coming to Game Pass this week

Firewatch is coming to Xbox Game Pass

Among Us (console) – Dec. 15

Ben 10: Power Trip (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Broken Age (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Firewatch (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

The Gunk (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Lake (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Mortal Kombat 11 (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Race With Ryan (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Transformers: Battlegrounds (cloud/console/PC) – Dec. 16

Again, the standout game here is obviously Halo Infinite. For those wondering about whether or not Master Chief’s latest adventure is one worth embarking on, the campaign is the best the series has been since Halo 3, while the corresponding multiplayer component is a beautiful dance

If Halo isn’t exactly your thing, we’d highly recommend taking Firewatch for a spin. Campo Santo’s debut effort from 2016 is widely revered as one of the best indie games ever made, meaning it’s now a must-play for anyone with an active Game Pass subscription – especially now you can pick one up for just $1.

‘No’ – Keanu Reeves when asked if Neo should be in Mortal Kombat

Neo won’t test his might.

Keanu Reeves isn’t keen on the idea of his characters being in Mortal Kombat.

During an interview with Esquire, Reeves took the time to answer some burning fan questions. One of which asked whether or not he would be into the idea of either Neo from The Matrix  or John Wick from the John Wick  films being guest characters in a Mortal Kombat  game.

“If it was up to me? No,” Reeves said  via Esquire. “Mortal Kombat  is awesome in so many ways. But I think, you know, Neo, John Wick… Yeah, man, they’re doing their own thing. Mortal Kombat’s  doing their own thing.”

The Matrix Resurrections  star sure didn’t mince words. Ed Boon will be heartbroken.

Mortal Kombat  has a long, storied history of crossovers with famous film characters. On several occasions, Jason Voorhees, the Predator, Rambo, RoboCop, and loads more have clashed steel with Scorpion and Sub Zero. Shame that Neo himself isn’t into the idea of stepping into Outworld, though.

Crossovers are all the rage in video games these days. League of Legends  is doing crossovers with Among usCall of Duty is likely crossing over with Attack on TitanFortnite does crossovers with  every brand in the known universe.

Tony Romo made a great Mortal Kombat reference during Browns-Chiefs and NFL fans loved it

“GET OVER HERE!”

Tony Romo knows a lot about football, which we’ve all learned by listening to him call games with Jim Nantz on CBS for the past few years. But now we know he’s also a Mortal Kombat fan, too.

Romo, who is in Kansas City today calling the Browns-Chiefs divisional playoff game, dropped a reference from the legendary video game and even did an impersonation of Scorpion, the character he quoted in this hilarious moment.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback dropped the “GET OVER HERE” line, which is the legendary catchphrase from the fighting video game, during the first half.

Check this out:

The internet quickly made this thing of beauty:

Tremendous.

Supreme’s new Mortal Kombat Arcade Cabinet is one of its most ridiculous drops yet

This is so wild.

Supreme has been known to release some pretty weird things — branded Oreo cookies, bricks, lawn chairs. The list goes on.

But this latest drop? This one takes the cake.

While previewing its latest look book for the fall/winter 2020 season, the OG skateboarding brand showed off some really sleek looks. It was filled with the normal stuff — you know, your jackets and coats and other things of that nature.

But as you keep scrolling, you stumble upon something completely and utterly ridiculous.

They have a genuine Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet. Seriously. Like one of those things that you might see in the arcade at the mall. It’s wild. And it has three different Mortal Kombat games.

Again, Supreme has dropped some pretty wild things over the years. Their accessory shock drops always get people talking.

But this one? Nah, this one is wild. But it’s also insanely dope. This is something you could definitely throw in the crib and play for hours.

There’s no price for this just yet. Just know that it won’t come easy and it won’t come cheap.

Klay Thompson watching ‘Mortal Kombat’ with his dog Rocco for ‘Sunday motivation’

Instead of tuning in for hoops in the Orlando Bubble, Klay Thompson spent time watching “Mortal Kombat” with Rocco for his “Sunday motivation.”

While 22 teams are making their stretch run to the NBA postseason at Disney World, the Golden State Warriors have officially entered offseason mode. With the league’s worst record, the Warriors are one of eight teams on the outside of the NBA’s Orlando Bubble.

Instead of tuning into the NBA’s slate of games on Sunday in the Bubble, Klay Thompson flipped on a movie. The five-time NBA All-Star shared a video on Instagram while watching “Mortal Kombat.” Thompson was fired up watching the 1995 film alongside his bulldog, Rocco.

Via @gswchris on Twitter:

Over Golden State’s early entrance to the offseason, Thompson has been spending time with Rocco. The Golden State shooting guard shared a photo featuring Rocco and Thompson locked in for a game of chess. Rocco also joined Thompson at a recent workout for “moral support.”

[lawrence-related id=29957,29358]

When he’s not watching movies or playing chess with Rocco, the shooting guard has been in the gym working back from his ACL injury. After missing the entire 2019-20 season due to the knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals, Thompson recently revealed his mind and body are “100%” ready to get back on the court.

[lawrence-related id=29277]

During Golden State’s extended offseason, Thompson will have plenty of time to prepare for his much-anticipated return to Steve Kerr’s rotation.
