Broncos rookie Montrell Washington making his mark as a returner

There’s hope that Montrell Washington may be the long-term solution to one of the Broncos’ biggest Achilles’ heels: special teams.

It has been a long time since the Denver Broncos had a dangerous returner running back punts and kicks; the last respectable one in recent memory was Trindon Holliday.

However, the Broncos think they may finally have the solution in rookie Montrell Washington.

“Montrell is a hard worker,” special teams coordinator Dwayne Stukes said during training camp. “He’s confident in his abilities and so am I. I’ve been pleasantly pleased with how Montrell has handled [returning kicks].”

Already, Washington has a leg up on several other contenders for Denver’s starting returner role. In college, Washington became a dynamic returner of both kicks and punts, ultimately returning 95 kicks (47 punts, 48 kickoffs) for 1,846 total yards and five touchdowns at Samford.

However, Stukes knows that fielding kicks in the NFL is a completely different animal from playing in front of around 3,000 fans at training camp.

“Now playing in a stadium or playing in front of a crowd is a lot different than in training camp right here,” Stukes said. “But when [Washington] enters the stadium, he should be the first on the field to catch the punt off of a live foot when we go to preseason, when we go to the regular season.”

That proved to be the case on Saturday night, with Washington getting the first opportunity to return kickoffs and punts against the Dallas Cowboys. The fifth-round draft pick didn’t disappoint, returning  two punts for 45 yards. That’s the kind of field-flipping the team’s been looking for.

When he was drafted, Washington earned the praises of Broncos general manager George Paton and the hopes of head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Now he’ll aim to continue proving during preseason that he’s the right man for the job.

Broncos stock up/down: Risers and fallers after first preseason game

Who impressed in the Broncos’ preseason win over the Cowboys on Saturday?

Although the starters on the offense and defense of the Denver Broncos did not start against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night, the Broncos came away with a dominant 17-7 victory over the visitors.

Here are seven risers and fallers for Denver following the team’s first preseason game of 2022.

Broncos buzz: Final week of training camp notes

Training camp’s about to wrap up for the Broncos. Bring on preseason football!

With training camp wrapping up and preseason about to begin, here’s our first installment of weekly Broncos buzz notes heading into the regular season.

Replacing Tim Patrick: After losing Tim Patrick (ACL) to injured reserve two weeks into camp, the Broncos will turn to in-house candidates to help replace him. Denver filled Patrick’s former spot on the 53-man roster by signing Darrius Shepherd, but returning WRs Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler will be asked to step up the most following Patrick’s injury. Given their size, Tyrie Cleveland and Seth Williams will also get opportunities to win larger roles on offense during preseason. Because Patrick was placed on IR before the 53-man roster was set, he is not eligible to return this season.

Rookie watch: Fifth-round draft pick Montrell Washington might win a rotational role at WR, but his main contributions this season will come on special teams as a returner. “The guy runs all day,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said of Washington. “When he catches a punt, he’s taking it to the house. I mean, he runs and runs. It’s great to see.” Washington will compete for the kickoff and punt return gigs during preseason — he’s considered the clear favorite to win both jobs.

Broncos roster series: No. 12, WR Montrell Washington

Montrell Washington will aim to make an immediate impact as a returner with the Broncos.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie receiver/returner Montrell Washington, No. 12.

Before the Broncos: Washington (5-10, 170 pounds) was a wide receiver at Samford, a small FCS university in Alabama. Washington excelled as a wide receiver and as a kick returner. Washington’s stats as a receiver totaled 148 receptions for 1,883 yards (12.7 avg.) with 17 touchdowns to go along with 101 rushes for 520 yards (5.1 avg.) with eight scores. As a kick returner, he totaled 48 kickoff returns for 1,075 yards (22.4 avg.) with one touchdown and 47 punt returns for 771 yards (16.4 avg.) with four scores.

Washington’s breakout game came against the University of Florida in 2021. Washington had 322 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the game, including a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to go along with two receiving touchdowns.

Broncos tenure: Washington was selected by Denver in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He’ll make his Bronco debut during preseason.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Washington comes into Broncos training camp as one of the most intriguing players this year. As a receiver, Washington is a speedster, reminding Denver fans of a healthy KJ Hamler. As a returner, Washington is reminiscent of electric returner Devin Hester.

“As a punt returner, as a kick returner, [special teams] coach [Dwayne] Stukes thought he would be our guy,” Denver general manager George Paton said in the spring. “He has some dynamic traits that you can’t teach. We feel he will be an upgrade there.”

Washington is projected by Broncos Wire to be a backup receiver, as well as the likely starter at kick returner.

NFL.com predicts 2 Broncos will make league’s All-Rookie Team

The league’s official website sees good things in the future for rookies Broncos rookies Greg Dulcich and Montrell Washington.

Denver Broncos rookies Greg Dulcich and Montrell Washington are already garnering support from the league’s official website, and they haven’t played a single down yet.

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter is using foresight to project this season’s All-Rookie Team. Broncos Country has no complaints with his selections.

Drafted 80th overall in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, Dulcich makes the offensive All-Rookie Team.

“The Broncos have a talented collection of wide receivers for quarterback Russell Wilson to find downfield in Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick and Jerry Jeudy,” Reuter wrote on NFL.com. “However, Dulcich has a chance to see a lot of snaps as either a starter or the running mate of Albert Okwuegbunam at tight end. The former Bruins star could become a safety valve and red-zone threat for Wilson.”

The Broncos love doesn’t stop there. Washington, meanwhile, makes the specialist All-Rookie Team as well. Drafted 162nd overall in the fifth round, Reuter sees Washington’s potential.

“The Broncos averaged just 16.2 yards per kickoff return (last in the NFL) and 8.2 yards per punt return (19th) in 2021. Washington’s ability to attack coverage units after fielding a kickoff (returned one for touchdown at Samford last year) or punt (four returned for TD in his career with the Bulldogs) will bring the excitement that Denver’s special teams units have sorely lacked,” Reuter wrote. “He also scored six times as a runner and nine times as a receiver in 2021.”

Time will be our judge, Mr. Reuter. For now, Broncos Country appreciates the love. We’re now less than a month away from the start of training camp. Let’s ride.

Broncos signing returner Montrell Washington to 4-year contract

Montrell Washington is set to earn about $4 million over the next four years with the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with rookie receiver/returner Montrell Washington, Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post first reported Thursday. Washington will earn $4,029,872 over the next four years, according to OverTheCap.com, an average of $1,007,468 per season.

Washington was selected by the Broncos in the fifth round of the NFL draft out of Samford in April. He’s a receiver by trade but Washington will likely serve primarily as a return specialist in Denver, similar to the role Diontae Spencer previously held with the Broncos.

Washington totaled 60 receptions for 813 yards and nine touchdowns last year with the Bulldogs. Those were fine numbers, but what caught Denver’s eye was Washington’s 985 return yards (742 on kickoffs and 243 on punts) and three returns for touchdowns in 2021.

Washington seems extremely likely to become the Broncos’ new designated returner for both kickoffs and punts, but they won’t hand him the job. Washington will have to compete this summer, with KJ Hamler and Kendall Hinton presumably among his competition for return duties.

Broncos announce jersey numbers for 2022 draft class

Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike will wear No. 96, previously work by Shelby Harris in Denver.

Ahead of rookie minicamp this weekend, the Denver Broncos announced jersey numbers for their 2022 NFL draft class. Here’s the list, courtesy of the team’s official website:

OLB Nik Bonitto: No. 42

TE Greg Dulcich: No. 80

CB Damarri Mathis: No. 27

DE Eyioma Uwazurike: No. 96

S Delarrin Turner-Yell: No. 32

WR Montrell Washington: No. 12

C Luke Wattenberg: No. 60

DE Matt Henningsen: No. 91

CB Faion Hicks: No. 29

Uwazurike choosing to wear No. 96 is fitting given that he will be among the candidates to replace Shelby Harris, who wore No. 96 with the Broncos from 2017-2021. Harris was traded to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the trade for quarterback Russell Wilson earlier this offseason.

Denver is expected to sign 13 more undrafted rookie free agents, but the team will have to make some corresponding moves to make room for the UDFAs on the 90-man offseason roster. Those 13 signings will likely become official soon, followed by number announcements for those additional rookies.

The Denver Broncos selected Samford (FCS) wide receiver Montrell Washington in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday (162nd overall). The pick was from a trade with the Houston Texans.

In 2021, Washington led the FBS is all-purpose yards with 1,938. He earned accolades as a 2021 Spring First Team All-SoCon player as a returner and fulfills general manager George Paton’s words to look for special teams contributors during the draft.

During his career, Washington caught 128 passes for 1,728 yards and rushed for 427 yards.

Washington (5-9, 181 pounds) will compete for the position of special teams returner for the Broncos.

Washington’s pro comparison is Tayvon Austin, wide receiver of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to NFL.com’s draft profile, what Washington may lack in size, he makes up for in speed.

Washington is another weapon that could be used for quarterback Russell Wilson, joining tight end Greg Dulcich who was drafted on Friday.

Next pick: 179th overall (fifth round, via a trade from the Indianapolis Colts on Friday night)
