Stanley Cup Final: Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Game 5 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 5 NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning play Game 5 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final Wednesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Amalie Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens vs. Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 5 odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

There was some worry the Canadiens and Lightning might be delayed traveling back from Montreal to Tampa due to Hurricane Elsa, now a tropical storm. The storm should be well out of the area by the time the puck drops.

The Canadiens staved off elimination with an overtime win in Game 4 on home ice Monday, but playing at Amalie Arena is a different animal.

The Lightning had a golden opportunity heading into OT in Game 4 on a double-minor high-sticking call to Canadiens D Shea Weber. Lightning RW Nikita Kucherov misfired on an open net to the left of G Carey Price, and the Habs were able to kill the penalty and then get a winner from RW Josh Anderson a few moments later.

  • Money line: Canadiens +190 (bet $100 to win $190) | Lightning -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-145) | Lightning -1.5 (+120)
  • Over/Under: 5 (O: -135 | U: +110)

Canadiens at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO). Stats from regular season.

Price easily had his best outing of the series in Game 4, by turning aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced, and he received a little help from the goalie’s best friend, the crossbar.

Vasilevskiy wasn’t terrible in Game 4, but he wasn’t amazing, either, while allowing 3 goals on 21 shots. He and his Tampa Bay teammates now get an opportunity to win the Cup on home ice.

Canadiens at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 3, Canadiens 1

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-250) will cost you two and a half times your potential return, and while I believe they get it done Wednesday, that’s too heavy of a risk.

AVOID, and look to the puck line instead.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (+120) are a much better play on the puck line, although it won’t be easy.

In fact, I expect that it will require an empty-net goal to salt this game away, and then the celebration will kick off in Tampa, which is quickly becoming the new Titletown U.S.A.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5 (+110) is the play here. I think Price will continue his outstanding play, holding the Lightning down, and Vasilevskiy will be hungry after losing Game 4. The scoring chances will be fewer and further between, which is commonly the case as a series goes longer and longer.

Stanley Cup Final: Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Game 2 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 2 NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning play Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Final series Wednesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Amalie Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens vs. Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 2 odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens fell behind in Game 1 when Erik Cernak notched a goal at 6:19 of the first period, while Montreal didn’t score its first goal until 17:40 of the second period to cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 2-1. It was a wire-to-wire win for the home side.

The Lightning gave side bettors and puck line bettors an easy night in the series opener. Nikita Kucherov lit the lamp twice, and Brayden Point had three assists to lead the way.

Canadiens at Lightning: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:27 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Canadiens +180 (bet $100 to win $180) | Lightning -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-150) | Lightning -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 5 (O: -125 | U: +105)

Canadiens at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO). Stats from regular season.

Price was under fire early in Game 1, and he allowed five goals on 27 shots for his worst performance of the postseason. He had allowed two or fewer goals in each of the final five games in the third round against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Vasilevskiy wasn’t tested much in Game 1, allowing just one goal on 19 shots. He faced just five shots each of the first and third periods while saving eight of nine shots in the second.

Canadiens at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 3, Canadiens 2

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-225) are heavy favorites to pick up the win in Game 2, but I don’t like having to risk nearly two and a half times the return. I think the Canadiens will play much better in this one, making chalk eaters sweat.

AVOID, and look to the puck line instead.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-150) just didn’t have it in the series opener, as the Lightning stormed to the 5-1 win and easy puck line cover.

However, Montreal has shown time and time again that it has another gear. When everyone wants to count the Canadiens out they will make the opposition work for it. They barely made it into the playoffs and were down 3-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 1. They persevered. They were underdogs to the Winnipeg Jets. They not only persevered, but they also swept. They were heavy underdogs to the Vegas Golden Knights and upended the hockey world by winning in six games.

Look for Montreal to keep it close, perhaps even falling in overtime.

Over/Under (O/U)

I expect the TOTAL 5 to come in right on the number. Playing UNDER 5.5 (-165) on the alternate line is the better play, as I expect a much better defensive effort and a good showing from Price.

Stanley Cup Final: Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Game 1 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 1 NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks and predictions.

The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning play Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Final series Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Amalie Arena. Below, we analyze the Canadiens vs. Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 1 odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens stunned the hockey world by winning a third straight postseason series, defeating the heavily-favored Vegas Golden Knights in six games. Les Habitants have won 11 of their last 13 postseason games.

The Lightning fought off the New York Islanders in seven games, with five of the games decided by one goal. They have won six of their last eight postseason games at home.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Canadiens +1.5 (-165) | Lightning -1.5 (+135)
  • Over/Under: 5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO). Stats from regular season.

Price has been ridiculous in the postseason, rolling up a 12-5-0 record, 2.02 GAA and .934 SV% with 1 shutout across 17 playoff games. He is the odds-on favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Habs go on to win the Stanley Cup.

Vasilevskiy has posted a 12-6-0 record, 1.99 GAA and .936 SV% with 4 shutouts in 18 playoff games. That includes an 18-save shutout Friday in Game 7 against the Islanders.

Canadiens at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 3, Canadiens 1

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-200) are big favorites to win Game 1 but risking two times your potential return just isn’t a good betting strategy over the long term.

AVOID, and look to the puck line instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (+135) are a decent play on the puck line, although it very well could take an empty-net goal to get over the hump in the series opener. Price has been super tough in these playoffs, so Tampa’s offense will have its work cut out.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5 (+100) is a decent play at plus money. The offenses will take a little while to get going in the series as both goaltenders have been red-hot.

You can expect these teams to perhaps play a scoreless first period as they feel each other out. UNDER 1.5 GOALS FOR THE FIRST PERIOD (-155) is an attractive side wager.
