Swinney keeps promise, visits for priority in-state OL’s basketball game

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was spotted at a priority in-state offensive tackle’s high school basketball game on Tuesday night.

Along with offensive line coach Thomas Austin, Swinney was in attendance to watch Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) four-star Monroe Freeling on the hardwood.

The Clemson Insider previously reported that Swinney would likely stop by Freeling’s high school sometime this week and he made a noticeable appearance at that.

TCI caught up with Freeling after Oceanside’s 69-29 win over Battery Creek (Beaufort, S.C.), in which he recorded three points and three blocks.

“It was really cool,” Freeling said. “It was his first time down here and hopefully not his last! I really appreciate their commitment to come down to see me play!

“I remember a few months back, when I was up at Clemson, I talked to him before the game and he said he was going to come down for a game. It’s really cool he actually kept his word. Lots of respect for him!”

Freeling was invited to Clemson’s Elite Junior Day on Jan. 29, but because he’s already grown a really good connection with the program, he’d like to use that time to look at some other schools, just so he can get some more perspective on his recruitment process

Priority in-state OL gives the latest on his recruitment

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a priority offensive lineman in the 2023 recruiting class.

Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) four-star Monroe Freeling gave the latest on his recruitment. While he previously reacted to the news that Robbie Caldwell would be transitioning into an off-field role, with Thomas Austin taking over as Clemson’s offensive line coach, he was able to go more in-depth in his most recent conversation with TCI.

“I had a feeling when I went up there in the fall, that he was gonna transition to the job,” Freeling said. “That night actually, we kind of were just very close and had a lot of time just hanging out. Since then, it’s just been positive all-around. Even with all the coaching changes, I know that I grew real close with Coach Austin before Coach Elliott left. So, it was good to still have a really good connection with one of the coaches.”

Tony Elliott, who is now the head coach at the University of Virginia, spearheaded Freeling’s recruitment, along with Caldwell. Freeling feels like Clemson handled the transition caused by the coaching staff shakeup the best it possibly could.

“I think it was a really smooth transition,” he said. “I was really always thinking that [Austin] was going to be the head offensive line coach because he was always talking to me a lot. I was talking to him a lot and I just had a feeling that he would probably be the coach eventually.

“With all these coaches leaving and everything, my recruitment process has slowed down, but not with Clemson. I feel like it’s still going up to date.”

Freeling elaborated more on the “feeling” he got regarding Caldwell’s eventual decision to step down.

“Coach Caldwell, I love Coach Caldwell, but it kind of felt like he was just burnt out, even with his real bright spirit,” Freeling said. “I felt like Coach Austin was really getting engaged with everything a lot more than I thought he would. Especially at the camp, I went to, he was doing some hands-on coaching. He was just talking to me a lot and I  had a feeling that day that I thought he was gonna be transitioning into the role just because of how involved he was with me and my recruiting process.”

Clemson’s dynamic, as far as its offensive line coaching is concerned, is appealing to Freeling. In addition to Austin, two former Tigers’ offensive linemen — Tyrone Crowder and Brandon Thomas — will work hand in hand with the offensive line as an offensive analyst and offensive graduate assistant, respectively.

“I think it helps,” Freeling said. “I think that knowing that they went to Clemson and got to the next level as offensive linemen really helps the case.”

Clemson’s coaches will either stop by Freeling’s school on Friday, Jan. 14 or Tuesday, Jan. 18. He was unsure about the dates, but Austin and possibly Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter will be making their way to the Charleston area sometime in the near future.

While he was invited to Clemson’s Elite Junior Day on Jan. 29 and seemed likely to attend, Freeling will not be in attendance.

“I think that I already grew a really good connection with Clemson,” he said. “I pretty much know a lot about Clemson already. I feel like I should use this time to go look at some other schools, just so I can get my gauge and my perspective on my recruiting process.”

Where would Freeling say he’s currently at with his recruitment?

“I really want to narrow my list down soon, but all these coaches keep on bouncing left and right,” he added. “I’m just kind of waiting for everything to really calm down, so I don’t make any mistakes.”

Freeling’s offseason consists of playing basketball, waking up at 6:30 a.m. every morning to take his younger brother to basketball practice and living in the weight room, so he can hold take over all of the all-time weight lifting records at his school.

Top Clemson OL target reacts to Caldwell retiring

Following Clemson’s 20-13 win over Iowa State Cheez-It Bowl, Robbie Caldwell was given a Gatorade bath.

Yes, Clemson’s offensive line coach was more than deserving, considering a tumultuous season that saw him and his unit as constant culprits of criticism, but in a way, it was also a send-off.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced postgame that Wednesday’s bowl game was the last for Robbie Caldwell as the Tigers’ offensive line coach.

Caldwell will be transitioning into an off-field role with the program as a director of high school relations. While Swinney said offensive analyst Thomas Austin will be taking over as the offensive line coach moving forward

This news shouldn’t come as a surprise to many. While Swinney didn’t announce the move until a couple of hours after Clemson’s season concluded, it was the expected move for quite some time now.

It’s also likely that prospective recruits were aware of Clemson’s plans, while Caldwell served as many of their lead recruiters. The Clemson Insider spoke with one of those recruits Thursday, who spoke glowingly of Caldwell.

Even though Caldwell and Elliott served as Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mt. Plesasnat) 2023 four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling’s lead recruiters, it doesn’t appear that the absence of those two figures will affect his recruitment.

“I have really enjoyed getting to know Coach Caldwell,” Freeling told TCI. “He is as genuine as it gets and tells great stories. His best story was how he tried to recruit my current OL coach (Antoine Rivens) ‘back in the day.’ It’s great that he ended his career as a coach with a W.

“His legacy will live on through Coach Austin, who I am excited to see begin his coaching career at Clemson!”

Here’s what they had to say:

Monroe Freeling (pictured above), 2023 4-star OL, Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.): “It was crazy to actually hear about it since he was just down at my school just a week ago. I’m sure it’s a great opportunity for him and it’s cool he’s taken the next step. It’s definitely a tough loss for Clemson. As for my recruiting, I’m eager to see who they will hire for his replacement. It’ll be interesting to see how things will change!”

Kam Pringle, 2024 4-star OL, Woodland High School (Dorchester, S.C.): “I’m happy for Coach Elliott because he deserves it! Coach Elliott and I have developed a great relationship and I have already been considering my recruitment in Virginia prior to the news!”

Clemson commit Blake Miller, 2022 4-star OL, Strongsville High School (Strongsville, Ohio): “I’m definitely happy for him, being able to get that job. I’m sure when it comes to Clemson, that Coach Swinney has a plan. He’ll get someone in there and things will be business as usual.”

Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott stayed in the Palmetto state to visit several prospects on Tuesday.

Elliott stayed in The Palmetto State to check on some high priority targets — Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) 2023 four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling and Woodland (Dorchester, S.C.) 2024 four-star offensive tackle Kam Pringle.

Elliott wasn’t able to speak with either prospect directly due to NCAA rules, but he came by Oceanside to watch Freeling’s basketball practice, in addition to meeting with his coaches. He also met with Pringle’s coaches at Woodland.

Freeling (6-7, 280) is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Palmetto State, No. 7 offensive tackle nationally and No. 98 overall prospect for the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Pringle (6-7, 305) is a prospect, who brings attitude and aggression, as well as some smartness and intelligence. He’s the complete package and is an eventual five-star prospect.

Joshua Miller, 2023 three-star offensive lineman, Life Christian Academy (Colonial Heights, Va.): “Clemson played a good game. I see the improvement from the team since the last game I went to. Oline blocking better, RBs running harder, everybody just playing harder.”

The Clemson Insider caught up with a highly-touted offensive lineman from The Palmetto State, who was in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State this past Saturday.

Over the weekend, Clemson played host to Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) 2023 four-star Monroe Freeling and his family.

“I had a really good time,” Freeling said. “It was good to see them play. It’s crazy with how many injuries they’ve had that they’re still winning games. I mean, I don’t know how they do it. It’s just crazy. Will Shipley was really impressive.”

What kind of feedback did Freeling get from Clemson’s coaching staff?

“I was happy to get up there,” he said. “It was all positive. I got the chance to talk with Dabo before the game. It was good to catch up with him. My dad met him for the first time and my little brother. So, it was good for my mom to talk to him again and him telling me how I check all the boxes, that I fit the program and that they want me really bad.”

Freeling was able to catch up with Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell, but really spent most of his team with Thomas Austin, who joined the staff as an offensive analyst this past offseason.

“I’ve gotten a lot closer with Coach Austin,” Freeling said. “It was good to hang out with Coach Austin and get to know him as a person and as a coach. Our relationship is really good, actually…he’s a really cool coach. I think he’s got that young, spirited side of him.

He was also able to spend some time with Permian (Odessa, TX.) 2023 four-star interior offensive lineman Harris Sewell, who picked up an offer from the Tigers on Monday night. The two definitely grew closer as the afternoon went on.

This was Freeling’s first-ever game-day experience in Death Valley. The highlight for him was being able to go into the locker room after Clemson’s win.

“I got to go in there and see the really enthusiastic environment…just everyone living it up in the locker room,” Freeling said.

After the game, he got a chance to hang out with both Walker Parks and Will Putnam.

“I asked them a lot of questions about the whole recruiting process and why they chose Clemson,” Freeling added. “I think it was good to get some insight from some actual players, who went through it.”

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound junior is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Palmetto State, No. 7 offensive tackle nationally and No. 98 overall prospect for the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Priority in-state OL target ready for return visit to Clemson

Clemson will play host to a priority in-state offensive line target again this weekend.

Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy four-star tackle Monroe Freeling is set to make an unofficial visit for Saturday’s game against Florida State.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound junior is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Palmetto State, No. 7 offensive tackle nationally and No. 98 overall prospect for the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Freeling was previously on campus this past June when he worked out at the Dabo Swinney Camp and subsequently picked up an offer from the Tigers. He is excited to take in his first game at Death Valley, having heard some of his friends talk about how much they’ve enjoyed attending games there.

“I’m really looking forward to it because I really enjoyed my first trip there and the camp and everything, going to campus,” Freeling told The Clemson Insider recently. “I know a lot of my friends say the games are really hype, because I have a lot of Clemson fan friends, and it should be really good to get back up there and enjoy the fans.”

Clemson made a favorable impression on Freeling when he was in town for the Swinney Camp.

“I think it was great,” he said. “It was great weather out there the whole day. I just remember it being a really enjoyable experience, and now I’m happy to see what it’s like (on a game day). I mean, this might be a little colder weather, but it’s not going to be too bad. It’ll just be nice to get back up there and experience it with the game-day environment.”

Clemson’s staff has been staying in touch with Freeling, and the Tigers are making him feel like a top O-line target for them. He is one of only two offensive linemen in the 2023 class with an offer from Clemson, along with Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman four-star tackle Markee Anderson.

“They’ve been saying they really want me, because it seems like they’ve been struggling with their O-linemen. That’s what the media’s really been saying,” Freeling said. “But yeah, they really want me. I’ve got to get back up there, of course, for a game, experience the environment.”

So far this season, Freeling has made game-day visits to Georgia, North Carolina, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

All of those schools have offered him, in addition to Clemson and schools such as Auburn, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Penn State, Oregon and Stanford.

Freeling expects to make his commitment sometime this winter, most likely during his basketball season.

“I think it might be towards this winter because I feel like I have a lot of other schools that I’ve still got to get out to just because of COVID and everything for my sophomore year and I wasn’t able to go to any colleges during the summer then,” he said. “So, I think it’s going to be a little bit longer than usual.”

Where does Clemson stand with Freeling in his recruitment heading into Saturday’s visit?

“I think Clemson’s there,” he said. “They made a really big impression on me the first time I was there. So, I’m just looking forward to continuing that development and relationship with them over the next couple months.”
