NEW: Mel Kiper Jr. has Jayden Daniels going No. 2 in NFL mock draft 1.0

Mel Kiper Jr. went on to explain why Jayden Daniels overtook Drake Maye on his board.

Mel Kiper Jr.’s first mock draft is hot off the presses at ESPN, and it features an interesting prediction regarding [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag].

The LSU quarterback and 2023 Heisman winner has seen a meteoric rise in his draft stock, and with the 2024 NFL draft just a couple of months away, Kiper is even higher on Daniels than most.

While many have Caleb Williams and Drake Maye as the top-two picks in the draft, Kiper has Daniels as his QB2. He predicts he will go second overall to the Washington Commanders after the Bears take Williams first.

Kiper went on to explain why Daniels has passed Maye on his board.

The Commanders have a much more straightforward decision than the Bears. Sam Howell, who led the league in interceptions in 2023, is not the guy. They have to take a quarterback in a draft that has a clear top tier of three signal-callers: Williams, Daniels and Drake Maye (North Carolina). There’s a drop-off in the class after that. With Washington getting an opportunity to take the No. 2 quarterback here, why did I go with Daniels?

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner improved so much in 2023, throwing 40 touchdown passes to just four interceptions while going up against a tough SEC schedule. In December, I went deep on his strengths, weaknesses and future, so you can see my full thoughts on his game there. The bottom line is it’s tight between Daniels and Maye on my board, but Daniels would be an tremendous fit for a Washington roster that has some young playmakers on offense. Maye’s inconsistency at the end of the season is enough for me to put Daniels at No. 2. The reality, though, is the Commanders just hired their new general manager and still don’t have a coach, so there’s a lot to figure out about which direction they go.

Daniels isn’t the only LSU player Kiper has going in the first round. Just four picks later, he has the Giants taking [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] at No. 6.

The Giants got just six games out of quarterback Daniel Jones on the way to a lost season that showed some cracks in the foundation. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale resigned after the season, and the offense under coordinator Mike Kafka struggled with Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito under center. New York’s quarterbacks were sacked a whopping 85 times, the most in the league, and the offense ranked 30th in yards per play (4.5). The Giants used top-10 picks on offensive linemen in 2020 (Andrew Thomas) and 2022 (Evan Neal), but I absolutely could see them doing it again, as tackles Joe Alt (Notre Dame) and Olu Fashanu (Penn State) are still available in this scenario.

Still, I keep coming back to getting Jones more help, as he has never played with a true No. 1 wide receiver. Nabers could be that. He’s coming off an 89-catch, 1,569-yard season catching passes from Jayden Daniels, and he has a rare combination of speed and route-running ability. He led the FBS with 17 catches of 30-plus yards. The Giants had just 15 total 30-plus yard receptions last season, five of which were from rookie third-rounder Jalin Hyatt.

Meanwhile, fellow wideout [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] has also seen his stock rise tremendously. Seen as a fringe first-round pick as recently as the end of the season, Thomas is now a frequent resident in the top 15 of mock drafts.

Kiper is no different, and he predicts that Thomas will stay close to home, going to the Saints with the 14th pick.

Derek Carr had an up-and-down debut season in New Orleans, and his sizable contract almost certainly means he’ll be back as the starter in 2024. But what do we know about the playmakers around him? Chris Olave is a star who has put up back-to-back seasons with 1,000 receiving yards. After that? There are big questions. Michael Thomas likely will move on this offseason, while Alvin Kamara has regressed in recent years. And while Rashid Shaheed showed he can be a useful complementary receiver, Carr could use another asset in the receiving game to try to boost this offense.

Thomas, the third of the LSU offensive players off the board in this projection, led the FBS with 17 touchdown catches last season while averaging 17.3 yards per reception. He had just three drops on 93 targets. He can take the top off defenses and be a stellar No. 2 option as a rookie. Plus, the born-and-raised Louisiana kid wouldn’t have to leave the state.

It’s set to be an eventful first round of the draft for former LSU players. The only question is exactly where this trio will land.

Where Jayden Daniels, other LSU stars land in CBS NFL mock draft after underclassmen deadline

LSU could have three players go in the top 15 if this mock ultimately comes true.

The deadline for underclassmen players to enter the 2024 NFL draft came and went on Monday, and we now have a much clearer picture of who will be available for teams to draft.

With that in mind, CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson updated his mock draft, and it features a slight drop for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] compared to other mocks. While many see Daniels as a possible top-three pick and potentially even the No. 2 overall quarterback in the draft, Wilson has him falling to the New York Giants with the No. 6 pick.

He would join a team that has a quarterback under contract in Daniel Jones but without long-term clarity at the position.

No player did more for their draft stock in the fall than Jayden Daniels, who went from possible Day 3 pick to first-round prospect. He reminds me of Lamar Jackson, and the Giants aren’t tied to Daniel Jones beyond the 2024 season.

On the other hand, Wilson is very high on both receivers [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag], who he has going in the top 15. As far as Nabers goes, he joins a talented Jets receiver room at No. 10 that will likely get Aaron Rodgers back next year.

The Jets would love an offensive linemen here, but with the top 3 already off the board, they take WR2, who is more like WR1.5; Nabers was electric for LSU in 2023, and he will give Garrett Wilson some much-needed help in New York.

Thomas, meanwhile, is going five picks later in the mock at No. 15 to the Colts, who will have what is for all intents and purposes a rookie quarterback in Anthony Richardson, who missed most of his first season due to injury.

Brian Thomas flew under the radar for LSU, which is what happens when you play alongside Malik Nabers and Jayden Daniels. But he’s a legit first-round talent who won consistently on vertical routes and dominated at the catch point.

It will be an eventful draft night on April 25 as LSU looks to have its most first-round picks since 2020.

Jayden Daniels’ stock rising with draft order finalized

Jayden Daniels’ stock continues to rise as draft season heats up.

Throughout his record-breaking 2023 campaign, [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]’ draft stock continued to skyrocket.

After four years of mixed reviews, Daniels turned himself into a consensus first-rounder, racking up over 1,000 rushing yards while also throwing the best deep ball in the country.

With the NFL regular season coming to a close, the top of the draft is set in stone. The order appears to benefit Daniels.

The Bears, Commanders and Patriots occupy the top three picks, and all could be looking for a quarterback come draft day. That’s good news for Daniels, who has separated himself as QB3 with Caleb Williams and Drake Maye remaining in pole position.

If Williams and Maye go one and two, that leaves Daniels sitting at three. He’d suddenly be the best quarterback on the board just three picks into the draft. And considering there could be a sizeable drop-off between Daniels at QB3 and whoever ends up at QB4, that’s a great spot for Daniels to be in.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid has Daniels at No. 3 in his latest mock. So does Jason McIntyre of Fox Sports.

This is a rise from where Daniels was even a month ago, where mocks had him somewhere in between five and 20. As draft season progresses, Daniels could become a consensus top-five pick.

Another mock draft has Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers going in the top 5

The Tigers could have three offensive players drafted in the first round for the first time since 2020.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a pair of players who raised their draft stocks more this season than [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag].

While the latter entered the year seeing at least some first-round hype, the former wasn’t even projected as a draftable prospect by some. But after leading the most productive offense in the country, both are essentially first-round locks and could even find themselves going in the top five.

That’s what ESPN’s latest mock draft from Jordan Reid projects. He has Daniels going third overall to the New England Patriots as quarterbacks are taken with the first three picks.

Stale and lacking talent. That’s the only way to sum up the current state of the Patriots’ roster. The QB carousel of Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones left more questions than answers, and New England has to find some form of excitement on offense. Daniels is an electrifying talent who brings downfield passing ability and rushing mobility. His improvement during his senior season was remarkable, as he finished first in the FBS in Total QBR (95.6), touchdown passes from the pocket (35) and passing yards per attempt (11.7). His 40 passing TDs ranked second, and his 10 rushing scores tied for ninth among QBs.

Reid doesn’t have Nabers waiting much longer. He predicts that the nation’s second-leading receiver will go to the Chargers with the fifth pick, where he will provide some much-needed assistance for Justin Herbert.

The Chargers are definitely a team that could look to trade back and stock up on picks to fill roster holes with younger talent. But if they stick at No. 5, they should go with a wide receiver for the second consecutive year (Quentin Johnston in 2023). Nabers is an explosive target who would be an immediate upgrade for the team’s offense. He’s a natural tackle-breaker, finishing sixth in the FBS in forced missed tackles on catches (27). Nabers also led the FBS in receiving yards per game (120.7). He is a big play waiting to happen and the exact type of receiver Los Angeles needs, especially with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams getting older and struggling to stay on the field.

Those aren’t the only two Tigers who could be first-rounders. Though draft analysts aren’t as high on [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag], he is still seen as a late Day 1 prospect. In Reid’s mock, he joins the high-octane Kansas City Chiefs offense.

Outside of Rashee Rice, the Chiefs’ pass-catchers have had a disappointing season, from a league-leading 38 drops to an ineffective downfield passing attack. At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, Thomas is a fluid mover, getting in and out of his breaks with ease and showcasing the speed to race past defenders. His 17 touchdown catches led the FBS this season, and 10 came on vertical routes. But Thomas can also use his frame in contested situations to make tough catches, which would make him a favorite of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

If Reid’s prediction ultimately comes to pass, it would be the first time the Tigers have had three offensive players taken in the first round since 2020.

Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers go in the top 5 in USA TODAY Sports’ latest mock draft

Both players boosted their respective draft stocks tremendously in 2023.

Both [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] boosted their NFL draft stocks tremendously this season. Now, as we prepare for the final game of the 2023 season, both are seen as projected first-round picks in the 2024 NFL draft.

But some prognosticators are even higher on the duo. In the latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft from Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, both players go in the top five.

Daniels is the one who has seen the biggest bump in his draft stock. Not even seen as a draftable prospect entering the season, he is now projected by many as QB3 in the draft. USA TODAY Sports’ mock agrees, sending him to New England with the third pick after Caleb Williams and Drake Maye.

Regardless of Bill Belichick’s fate, an offensive overhaul seems sure to come in New England. Daniels hasn’t been mentioned alongside Williams and Maye as a surefire top-three pick, but the Heisman Trophy winner has a highly desirable package of traits. While his athleticism and deep passing might be his hallmarks, his composure in the pocket should give any front office an additional level of comfort in projecting him to the next level.

Nabers won’t have to wait much longer, though, if this mock plays out. He’s projected to go to the Los Angeles Chargers at pick No. 5 where he would provide a major boost for rising star quarterback Justin Herbert.

Keenan Allen and Mike Williams could be on shaky ground for a franchise with a rough short-term financial outlook. No matter what the team decides regarding the veteran pass catchers, the receiving corps needs to become more dynamic for the Chargers to properly take advantage of Justin Herbert’s talent. Nabers, who can stress defenses both as a deep threat and in racking up yards after the catch, can certainly help in that department.

The pair aren’t the only LSU players projected to go in the first round, however. [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] is projected to join the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 26th pick.

No need to sell Andy Reid or Patrick Mahomes on a 6-4, 205-pound target who averaged 17.3 yards per catch and hauled in 17 touchdowns this season. While Thomas is still refining his game, he already has the makeup of a true No. 1 receiver who can provide Mahomes and Travis Kelce the assistance they have so sorely lacked this season. His impressive tracking as a downfield target and prowess in the red zone could quickly change the complexion of Kansas City’s attack.

Regardless of how the draft ultimately plays out, all three have a very good chance to hear their names called in what should be a very eventful Night 1 of the draft.

CBS updates mock draft for Jayden Daniels, others ahead of national championship game

It should be an eventful Night 1 of the draft for former LSU stars.

There’s only one game left in the 2023 college football season before we turn our attention to the 2024 NFL draft, and there are several LSU players vying to be first-round picks.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] is the one whose stock has risen the most. Since winning the Heisman, he is now seen as a likely top-five pick. In CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson’s mock draft, he goes to the Giants at No. 5. Meanwhile, Chris Trapasso sends him to the Patriots even higher at No. 3.

In addition to Daniels, both [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] are projected first round picks. Trapasso has Nabers in the top 10 to the Bears, while he falls to the hometown New Orleans Saints at No. 13 in Wilson’s mock.

Finally, Thomas goes to the Bills at No. 24 in Trapasso’s mock, but Wilson is higher on him and has him going in the top 15 to the Broncos at No. 14.

All three of those players should hear their names called on what should be an eventful Night 1 of the draft.

Jayden Daniels goes in the top 3 in latest CBS Sports mock draft

Jayden Daniels’ draft stock is at an all-time high.

After taking arguably the biggest leap in college football in a 2023 season that saw him win the Heisman Trophy, [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]’ NFL stock is at an all-time high.

Though he wasn’t getting much first-round attention at all before the season or early in it, he’s now seen as a consensus top-10 pick as we approach the 2024 NFL draft.

He could go even higher, though. In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson, Daniels goes third overall to the Washington Commanders. Washington entered the year with Sam Howell starting, but his recent benching seems to indicate an intention to move on.

I know that Sam Howell is the Commanders QB and that he’s had a solid Year 2 while showing signs of real growth. But there’s also a pretty good chance new ownership is looking for a new coach, and often new coaches like to have “their” quarterback too. No player improved more this fall than Daniels, whose game reminds me a lot of Lamar Jackson.

The same mock also has receiver [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] going to the New York Jets at No. 9 overall, which would put him off the board ahead of Washington’s Rome Odunze.

Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers both top 10 picks in latest CBS mock draft

The duo has seen its stock rise considerably after a prolific 2023 season.

It could be a busy draft night for former Tigers.

Both [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] raised their stocks considerably with prolific final seasons at LSU, with the former winning the Heisman and the latter leading the nation in receiving while finishing as the runner-up for the Biletnikoff Award.

Both are now widely projected as top-10 picks in the 2024 NFL draft, and that’s where they both stand in the latest mock draft from CBS Sports.

In the mock, Daniels goes to the New York Giants, who are expected to move on from Daniel Jones as the starter despite his contract, with the sixth pick. Meanwhile, Nabers provides a big-time weapon for Will Levis and the Tennessee Titans.

The duo dominated college football in 2023, and it will look to carry that success over to the next level in 2024.

Two LSU players projected in top 10 of latest CBS Sports mock draft

Two of the best players in the country find themselves in the top 10 of CBS Sports’ latest mock draft.

Two of the best players in the NCAA find themselves in the top ten of CBS Sports’ latest mock draft. [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] have both made the top ten in the latest mock draft.

After winning the Heisman, Daniels’s draft stock rose even higher. CBS Sports has Daniels being drafted at No. 2 overall by the New England Patriots.

The Patriots have a plethora of problems on the offensive side of the ball. I don’t think that throwing a new quarterback in that system will change anything. No quarterback will be successful without a competent offensive line and without wide receivers that can create separation from defensive backs.

The Pats will also be in the market for a new head coach as Bill Belichick will be gone at the end of the year, according to a report from NBC Sports.

CBS Sports has Nabers going to the Tennessee Titans with the ninth pick of the draft. The Titans may have found their future quarterback in Will Levis so now they will try to surround him with talent to make him even better.

3 LSU Tigers go in the first round of latest ESPN 2024 NFL mock draft

It could be an eventful draft night for former Tigers.

As we prepare to tie a bow on the 2023 season with LSU’s ReliaQuest Bowl matchup against Wisconsin, we will soon be turning our attention to what could be an eventful 2024 NFL draft for former Tigers.

A trio of offensive stars could hear their names called on the first night of the draft in [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] And in the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Matt Miller, all three are projected as first-round picks.

Daniels, who has seen his draft stock skyrocket after a Heisman-winning season, is projected to go the highest with the fourth pick to the New York Giants.

Is this too early for Daniels, even after his brilliant Heisman-winning 2023 season? Maybe, but teams will overdraft at quarterback in an effort to find the right player, and Daniels’ dual-threat ability and vertical passing traits are very intriguing. His 50 total touchdowns this season make him a first-round candidate, but it’s Daniels’ improvement in the pocket and the best deep ball in college football that will truly turn heads come draft time.

The Giants are invested financially in Daniel Jones, but his play simply hasn’t been good enough, and New York can move on via a trade. His 38.4 QBR ranks 25th in the NFL, and his season is over with a torn ACL. Daniels’ 95.7, meanwhile, leads the FBS. And sure, undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito has been a fun story, leading the Giants to three straight wins. But his QBR on the season? It’s even worse than Jones’ at 26.2.

He’s joined in the top 10 by Nabers, who is projected to go eighth to the Chicago Bears.

The Bears have receiver DJ Moore and tight end Cole Kmet, but with Darnell Mooney struggling to develop into a consistent threat and set to hit free agency, they could stand to add more options — especially if they are taking a rookie quarterback in Williams at No. 1. Nabers is the most explosive after-the-catch receiver in the draft — he averages 6.8 yards after the catch per reception — and I like to compare him to Stefon Diggs. You might wonder about a left tackle here, but I’m a believer in second-year player Braxton Jones, so Chicago would be wise to go receiver at No. 8.

Both Daniels and Nabers look like sure-fire first-rounders, but Thomas may be a bigger question mark. He’s not viewed as a first-round prospect in all mocks, but Miller has him sneaking in at No. 26 to the Detroit Lions.

The Lions drafted a running back (Jahmyr Gibbs) and linebacker (Jack Campbell) in Round 1 back in April, but let’s get them back to adding premium positions with early picks with a talented wide receiver. Thomas can play opposite Amon-Ra St. Brown as a 6-foot-4 red-zone target. He has 60 catches — with15 scores — while averaging 18 yards per reception this season, and he’d be a physical mismatch for Jared Goff and the offense.

After a prolific season for LSU, it could be set to deliver one of the top offensive draft classes from any school in the nation.
