FSGA National Conference experts draft recap

A pick-by-pick review of The Huddle’s team in a prominent industry league.

The Fantasy Sports and Gaming Association (FSGA) organizes several industry expert leagues, with the 14-team “Champions League,” hosted by RTSports.com, being the crown jewel.

I had the honor of competing in the premier grouping for a decade, making the postseason six of my last eight years, including a close loss in the finals. Understanding the necessity to take calculated risks on draft day is among the reasons for my consistency. Being afraid to take a chance or reach for a player — especially in this 14-team variant filled with excellent drafters — is a fast-track to being demoted from the league. Yeah, demoted. The bottom four teams get relegated to the next league down the chain.

Thus, there is a need to take bold actions at a level unprecedented in arguably any other professional draft. In short, I much rather take a chance reaching for some players I covet than playing it too safe. Of course, there’s a nuanced blend of risk to work into a roster design, but it all comes down to making intelligent gambles.

All of the FSGA leagues are performance-based PPR formats, and drafting a live league this early in the summer makes for a fun tightrope walk in some regards. Drafting in late June forces gamers to make a larger number of educated guesses on appropriate value of unsettled situations. These leagues do not allow trades, so the draft’s importance is paramount.

My aggressive nature didn’t work out in 2022, and I was relegated to the National Conference draft. Last year’s bid to return to the Champions League was off to a hot start, going 6-0 before the wheels came off and I stumbled to an 8-6 finish. A fresh start puts me right back into the same position, so let’s look at the foundation I get to work with in 2024.

Pick-by-pick review

Check out the entire draftboard here!

1:08) WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions: I probably would have taken my chances with Justin Jefferson and all that is Minnesota’s QB situation had he made it one more pick, but I’m in no way upset with Brown. He’s a PPR machine in an offense that will continue to feed him on all three downs.

2:07) RB Josh Jacobs, Green Bay Packers: While Jacobs comes with some durability concerns, he’s a workhorse who can contribute in the passing game and is the unquestioned starter in an offense that remains committed to the run. I expect a refreshed Jacobs looking to rebound from a down year.

3:08) WR Cooper Kupp, Los Angeles Rams: Round 3 feels maybe a tad early, but it’s a 14-team PPR format. I’m banking on a return to health and one more top-flight season from the veteran. Puka Nacua‘s emergence surely is a concern, but his numbers weren’t all that impressive when Kupp was on the field a year ago.

4:07) TE Dalton Kincaid, Buffalo Bills: This could be the most pivotal pick of my draft. Kincaid will challenge for TE1 overall in 2024. Round 4 is earlier than I prefer to address the position, and it my prove to cost me dearly at running back. It cost me Rhamondre Stevenson, Alvin Kamara, Aaron Jones and Zamir White as my RB2. I can live with that risk-reward decision.

5:08) RB Zack Moss, Cincinnati Bengals: After missing out on that aforementioned quartet of No. 2 running backs, I turned to Moss – one of my favorite contenders for a breakout season. He has limited talent behind him and flashed in prior stops. Cincinnati will feed him enough touches to post RB3 numbers as long as he’s remotely decent, but midrange No. 2 returns are in play.

We have a nearly 30-year track record of creating fantasy football champs. Sign up for The Huddle today to gain an award-winning edge on the competition!

6:07) RB Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers: Many owners prefer Jaylen Warren over Harris, and it’s tough to argue against it, yet I opted for Harris instead. I briefly considered Austin Ekeler here, but Pittsburgh hiring Arthur Smith to run the offense solidified my decision to err on the side of caution after risking my RB2 spot on Moss. Even with Warren’s strong play, Harris managed an RB2 finish in 2024 and is entering a contract year.

7:08) QB Jared Goff, Detroit Lions: I was set on taking Brock Purdy but lost out on him by a couple of picks. It led me to stacking Goff with St. Brown. The Lions return just about everyone of note from last year’s prolific offensive showing, and the drop-off to the next QB on my list was significant.

8:07) WR Courtland Sutton, Denver Broncos: After going top-heavy at WR, I waited until the midpoint to address the position again. Sutton was the final receiver on the board with whom I had any real comfort in selecting as my third, and he isn’t without concerns. Nevertheless, someone has to catch the ball in Denver, even if it’s from a rookie quarterback.

9:08) WR Quentin Johnston, Los Angeles Chargers: A polarizing selection, Johnston gets a fresh start to showcase his skills after a disappointing rookie campaign. The new offensive design isn’t exactly conducive to a pass-heavy script, though the former first-rounder has a legit quarterback and a largely unproven cast of receivers to battle for the top spot.

10:07) RB Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals: This one is purely a handcuff selection. Let’s say I’m wrong about Moss breaking out … that creates a fine opportunity for Brown to exploit. The 2024 fifth-round selection displayed some chops as a rookie, albeit in extremely limited work (58 touches), and Brown has little behind him in the way of competition.

11:08) WR Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears: Meh. Mooney’s best days are behind him in all likelihood, though he can muster a few flex fill-in performances with Kirk Cousins at the helm. There’s a small chance for a regular role if Drake London were to get injured, and another Kyle Pitts letdown isn’t unfathomable.

12:07) RB Dylan Laube, Las Vegas Raiders: Laube injects youth into my offense and offers a pass-catching option not found ahead of him on the depth chart in Vegas. He has turned heads in OTAs and makes for a fine flier this late in a 14-teamer.

13:08) QB Will Levis, Tennessee Titans: Levis has all the physical tools to excel. One of my favorite sleepers, the second-year pro has upgraded receivers and a quarterback-friendly offense being installed. Both running backs and the primary tight end can make splash plays in the passing game, too. Levis’ upside is too good to pass up.

14:07) QB Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Here’s where things get a little funky! Levis shares a bye week with my starter, Goff. Had it been a late-season bye I wouldn’t have batted an eye, but the Week 5 hiatus makes things a little precarious, hence the selection of a third QB. Mayfield, who faces Atlanta in Week 5, gives me added insurance if Levis struggles early on and/or Goff gets hurt. The takeaway here is embracing flexibility with your draft plans can lead you down unforeseen but profitable paths.

15:08) D/ST Miami Dolphins, Miami Dolphins: Despite lingering injuries and notable personnel losses across on three levels, Miami is a decent pick after waiting on the position in a 14-team draft in which owners started drafting DTs in the 12th and had seven off the board by Round 14. The early-season schedule is acceptable.

16:07) PK Greg Zuerlein, New York Jets: The last kicker off the board, Zuerlein is entirely expendable if he struggles early in the year. New York should be much more capable on offense with a healthy Aaron Rodgers. The big-legged booter offers distance value and is automatic inside 40 yards.

Jac Caglianone a consensus top-5 pick in MLB mock drafts

Florida two-way star Jac Caglianone was among the best players in college baseball this year, and he should be a top-five pick in the draft.

Now that [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag]’s record-setting career in Gainesville has come to an end, it’s time for the greatest Florida Gators slugger of all time to begin his time in the pros.

Caglianone will be a top-5 pick in the upcoming 2024 MLB draft on July 14, barring a major surprise. Every major outlet that covers that MLB draft has Caglianone going before the sixth pick of the draft.

The most popular landing spot seems to be the Oakland Athletics at No. 4 overall. The A’s are moving to Las Vegas, and a guy like Caglianone could help jumpstart a young franchise once he moves through the minor leagues. MLB Pipeline, Sporting News and USA TODAY Sports all have Caglianone landing with the A’s.

Outlet Draft Pos. MLB Team Slot Value
MLB Pipeline No. 4 Oakland Athletics $8,370,800
The Athletic No. 3 Colorado Rockies $8,370,800
ESPN No. 5 Chicago White Sox $7,763,700
Sporting News No. 4 Oakland Athletics $8,370,800
Perfect Game (April) No. 3 Colorado Rockies $8,370,800
Prospects Live (April) No. 2 Cincinnati Reds $9,785,000
USA TODAY No. 4 Oakland Athletics $8,370,800

Despite being one of the top players in the country this year, Caglianone is hardly in the conversation for either of the top two picks. Golden Spikes winner Charlie Condon and Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana are battling for the top spot, but are almost guaranteed to be the top names off the board to Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Colorado would be a fun place for Caglianone to land, considering the elevation allows balls to fly much farther than any other venue in the sport. Caglianone was responsible for many towering home runs with a metal bat in college. He can probably do just as much damage with wood in Colorado.

However, Wake Forest starting pitcher Chase Burns seems to be the favorite in that sport if Colorado goes with a pitcher. Florida’s two-way star was among the best players in college baseball this year, and he should be a top-five pick in the draft.

PJ Hall goes to NBA champion Boston Celtics in last On3 mock draft

On3 sees Hall going to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

The 2024 NBA Draft is just two days away, and Clemson’s PJ Hall is one of several players hoping to hear their names called on Day 2 of the draft in New York.

On3 released its latest — and final — mock draft Monday morning and sees Hall going to the NBA champion Boston Celtics. Boston has the 30th and 55th picks in the draft, and On3 sees Hall being chosen by the Celtics in the second round.

In On3’s mock draft, Hall went one spot ahead of Southern California’s Bronny James. France’s Zaccharie Risacher has been forecast as the consensus top overall pick in this year’s draft.

Last week, CBS Sports had Hall going 41st overall to the Philadelphia 76ers. Bleacher Report and The Ringer both projected Hall going four spots below at 45th overall to the Sacramento Kings, and The Athletic had the former Clemson forward going 50th overall to the Indiana Pacers.

RELATED: Where PJ Hall goes in latest 2024 NBA mock drafts

Hall closed out a memorable four-year run at Clemson by averaging 18.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in 2023-24. He made all 36 starts last season and helped lead Clemson to the school’s first Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1980.

Hall is hoping to become the second Tigers player selected in back-to-back NBA Drafts. A year ago, Clemson’s Hunter Tyson was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the 37th overall pick.

The NBA Draft begins Wednesday at 8 p.m. EDT at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center with first-round coverage being televised by both ABC and ESPN. Round 2 begins Thursday at 4 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN.

Browns land local explosive wide receiver in new 2025 NFL mock draft

The Browns could add even more firepower next year

The Cleveland Browns have one of the best rosters, from top to bottom, in the NFL heading into the 2024 season. A local wide receiver like Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka could surely help with that.

The team will likely extend Amari Cooper and has high hopes for the rest of the wide receiver room to grow and develop. However, with little proof in this group, they could still add more as they finally pick in the first round again next April. In the latest mock draft from Sports Illustrated, Cleveland lands the Ohio State star Egbuka in the first round.

“Looking at the roster, it is hard to match fit, need, and value in the middle of the first round. Offensive tackle could be a need, but the top-three are already off the board. Here, they make Emeka Egbuka their newest wide receiver instead. Amari Cooper is in the last year of his deal and holding out, the Browns just traded for and extended Jerry Jeudy. However, after those two names there is not a proven player in the room. They need more offensive firepower that Egbuka can provide.”

Some of his incredibly talented teammates have overshadowed Egbuka, but he is the real deal. One of the best route runners and a great athlete, the sky is the limit to what Egbuka could become in the NFL.

Broncos select Michigan star Will Johnson in 2025 NFL mock draft

Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2025 NFL mock draft has the Broncos selecting Michigan star Will Johnson early in the first round.

Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon recently released a 2025 NFL mock draft and he has the Denver Broncos selecting Michigan cornerback Will Johnson with the third overall pick in the first round.

Before anyone gets too angry with Risdon for having the Broncos pick third, note that he used the order from Pro Football Focus’ mock draft simulator (and PFF’s order is closely aligned with Super Bowl odds). So Risdon is not necessarily predicting a terrible record for Denver, he’s just using a made-up draft order from PFF and making picks based on that order.

As for Johnson (6-2, 202 pounds), Risdon said he would be an awesome partner to pair with Pat Surtain in 2025. Going into the summer, the Broncos appear set to have Riley Moss, Levi Wallace and Damarri Mathis compete for the starting job across from Surtain in 2024.

Johnson earned first-team All-American recognition after recording four interceptions last fall. He helped the Wolverines win a national title last season and took home CFP National Championship Game Defensive MVP honors after totaling four tackles and an interception in Michigan’s 34-13 win over Washington.

Steelers land athletic defenisve tackle in new 2025 NFL mock draft

Tyleik Williams wuld be a huge upgrade int he middle of the Steelers defense.

Last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected defensive tackle Keeanu Benton in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft and he’s on a short list of breakout candidates for the upcoming season. Nevertheless, the Steelers seem to never have enough disruptive players in the middle so when Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network put out his latest 2025 mock draft, that’s the direction for Pittsburgh.

Cummings has the Steelers selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. Here’s what Cummings had to saw about the pick:

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Steelers made their offensive line a force to be reckoned with. In 2025, they’ll now turn to the other front. Tyleik Williams, with his logic-defying athleticism and versatility at 6’3″, 327 pounds, would wreak havoc beside Keeanu Benton.

Williams is one of a handful of massive interior defensive linemen who could come off the board in the first round. We’ve lobbied for years for a massive run stuffer to bring back memories of Casey Hampton and while we love Benton’s game, he’s not that type of player. Williams certainly could be.

Bucs land stud CB in early 2025 NFL mock draft

See which top cornerback prospect the Tampa Bay Buccaneers land in this early first-round forecast for the 2025 NFL draft

It’s never too early to look ahead to the next NFL draft, and that’s exactly what our friends at Draft Wire have done this week, with a brand new first-round projection for 2025.

In this early mock for next year’s draft, the Bucs are selecting 12th overall, meaning they would miss the playoffs for the first time in five seasons, which would obviously be a disappointment.

But on the bright side, this projection has them using that pick on Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison, one of the top cornerback prospects in college football. Morrison has the size, length and coverage skills to be an ideal fit in Todd Bowles scheme, and a stellar 2024 campaign could easily make him a top-10 pick.

After trading away Carlton Davis III this offseason, the Bucs have tons of question marks at corner outside of Jamel Dean, who himself has even struggled to stay healthy and consistent. Spending a first-round pick on a top prospect like Morrison next year would be an ideal scenario for Tampa Bay to shore up a huge need at a premium position.

Clemson-to-Philly connection for PJ Hall in 2024 NBA Draft?

Clemson’s PJ Hall is hoping to see his name called in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft next week.

Earlier this year, two Clemson players — running back Will Shipley and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. — were drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Could another rookie from Clemson be headed to Philadelphia next? At least one NBA Draft analyst think so.

In his latest mock draft, CBS Sports’ Kyle Boone forecasts Clemson forward PJ Hall to be a second-round selection (No. 41 overall) by the Philadelphia 76ers in next week’s NBA Draft. It’s the highest spot Hall has been forecast in recent mock drafts.

Hall worked out for the Golden State Warriors on June 7.

Per Boone’s analysis of Hall:

“The on-court/off-court metrics for Clemson with and without PJ Hall last season are staggering. The big man has a skilled game on the interior and is coming off a career year in which he averaged 18.3 points per game.”

Bleacher Report projects Hall going 45th overall to the Sacramento King in the draft, to be held Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27. The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie projects Hall as the 50th overall pick by the Indiana Pacers.

Comparing Hall to New Orleans Pelicans forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman writes:

“PJ Hall didn’t scrimmage in Chicago after participating last year. There is ultimately enough game film of the senior playing against NBA-caliber bigs from the ACC.

Hall will still have to sell teams on his shooting during workouts, but he’s consistently improved his range. And between his physical profile and fundamentals around the post, his post scoring feels translatable.”

First-round selections for the 2024 NBA Draft will be held Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The draft will conclude Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. with second-round selections.

ESPN will broadcast both rounds of the draft. ABC will televise the first round, as well.

Saints linked to big-time offensive lineman in 2025 mock draft

The Saints were linked to a big-time offensive lineman in Touchdown Wire’s latest 2025 mock draft. Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. would be a good get:

The 2025 NFL draft is a long ways away, so it’s better to use mock drafts like this one from Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar as advanced scouting reports on players to watch during the 2024 college football season. And this time Farrar has the Saints picking Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr.

A former five-star recruit with the rare combination of size and athleticism pro scouts look for, Banks has been exceptional through two years of play. He’s lined up exclusively at left tackle and allowed just three sacks on 1,006 snaps in pass protection per Pro Football Focus charting. After being selected for the All-Big 12 second team in 2022, he was promoted to the conference’s first team in 2023.

Here’s why Farrar sees him as such a great fit with New Orleans:

Back in Sean Payton’s salad days, the Saints were all about getting the best guards possible to assist Drew Brees in throwing the ball in the ways that were best for him. Now, Dennis Allen’s crew is just looking for a front five that works. The selection of Oregon State tackle Taliese Fuaga with the 24th overall pick in the 2024 draft helps, but there’s so much that’s still undefined along the line. Kelvin Banks Jr. would be a nice fit in New Orleans because he can play both guard and tackle, and he does it all with serious attitude. Last season for the Longhorns at left tackle, Banks allowed one sack and 12 total pressures in 550 pass-blocking snaps, and when it was time to hit the second level, Banks was looking to HUNT opponents.

It’s tough to fault that logic. The Saints need to keep pouring resources into their offensive line until it isn’t a problem anymore. If they can’t get it right, it won’t matter who the quarterback is or which weapons he can throw to, or whether it’s Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, or someone else leading the backfield next year. Drafting Fuaga was a good start. If things don’t work out with Trevor Penning switching to right tackle, a first-round left tackle like Banks could allow Fuaga to move back to his college position. But if Penning does flourish in his new role, either Banks or Fuaga could move inside to guard. Another talent injection could be just what this unit needs.

Still, it’s a problem for another day (if not another year). Right now the Saints are betting on Fuaga and Penning bookending the line while Nick Saldiveri steps into the lineup at left guard, with Erik McCoy and Cesar Ruiz returning from last year’s team. Hopefully that combination works well and wins them enough games to where they can look to address another position of need in 2025.

Saints pick Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter in 2025 mock draft

The Saints picked Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter in this 2025 mock draft. He could help out on either side of the ball:

There’s a chance the New Orleans Saints could pick one of the most  electrifying (and enigmatic) talents in the 2025 NFL draft. We turned the controls over to the Pro Football Focus mock draft simulator to run a first-round projection for next year’s draft, and the computer gave the Saints a fascinating player: Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter.

Hunter has been linked to the Saints before. He was their pick in Dane Brugler’s day-after mock draft in April, with Brugler pointing to Hunter’s ability to make a play with the ball in his hands as a point in favor of keeping him at wide receiver.

But would Hunter play offense or defense in the NFL? The answer may depend on which team drafts him. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, fine size for either position, and last year he saw more snaps on defense (592) than offense (452). He finished with 57 receptions for 721 yards and 5 touchdown catches while bagging 3 interceptions and 5 pass breakups, with 26 tackles.

What could those positions look like a year from now? The Saints’ pending free agents in 2025 at wide receiver include Rashid Shaheed (who should be easy to re-sign as a restricted free agent), Equanimeous St. Brown, and Stanley Morgan. Cornerbacks Paulson Adebo, Ugo Amadi, and Shemar Jean-Charles are also scheduled to test the market. If Adebo leaves in free agency and Marshon Lattimore is ultimately traded the Saints could look to add another corner. If something happens with Shaheed or the other wideouts on the roster fail to make an impact, they’ll need another receiver.

It’s too soon to say where Hunter’s NFL future will take him. What’s certain is he won’t be playing full-time on both sides of the ball like he has in college. The pro game is too fast-paced, too physical, and too specialized to allow it. He’ll need to pick a path eventually. For now, he’s impressing everyone watching him on Saturdays — and that includes a lot of excited NFL scouts.
