The 2020 MLS season kicks off this weekend with the San Jose Earthquakes hosting Toronto FC. The MLS live stream can only be caught on ESPN+.

After losing to Seattle in the 2019 MLS Cup, Toronto should be considered one of the best MLS teams this season. However, with injuries to Michael Bradley and Pablo Piatti, Toronto is hurting to begin. But is that enough to lose the first game of the season?

San Jose just missed the playoffs last season with a 13-5-16 record but they’re healthy and looking to make a name for themselves. A strong start, especially a win over Toronto, would be a huge statement for the Earthquakes.

The XFL could be going into a rough weekend for ratings. Viewership has dropped consistently from the first week to the third week and now things may go haywire. The good news is that at least the Saturday games are on broadcast television, but a confluence of factors could lead to some bad numbers.

Momentum

An object in motion tends to stay in motion. The motion of these ratings isn’t a good sign for the XFL. They are down over 50 percent from Week 1 to Week 3. We don’t know what bottom is so we can’t say things will be fine. Ratings could drop like the stock market looking for support.

We probably won’t know where the bottom is this week because it’s particularly difficult for some other reasons.

TFC (+250) was dealt a huge blow in the preseason, as new designated player Piatti suffered a multi-week hamstring injury. This shifts things dramatically in favor of the SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (+100). The Earthquakes finished eighth in the Western Conference last season and just missed out on the playoffs with a record of 13-16-5, however they were 10-5-2 at home while Toronto FC was just 4-6-7 on the road.

San Jose earned a 2-1 victory in last year’s head-to-head meeting. Another factor in favor of the home side: It will be 61 degrees in San Jose Saturday, compared to just 26 degrees in Toronto.

Take the UNDER 2.5 (+130) with the notable absence of Piatti for TFC. While Zlatan Ibrahimovic has moved on from LA GALAXY (+190), Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez comes over as Mexico’s all-time leading scorer and will be a marquee draw for all of MLS. Houston Dynamo (+125) have won three of the last four head-to-head meetings, including a 4-2 win last October, but the value lies on an LA Galaxy club coming off another postseason trip last season. Houston Dynamo was 10-3-4 at home last season, but just 2-15 on the road, showing their true worth lies somewhere in between.

Back the visitors as the more profitable side in the season opener. Hernandez will make his impact immediately.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 3.5 (+110) is the play. This is the only game of Saturday’s MLS slate with the goal total set at 3.5 as opposed to 2.5, in what’s expected to be an early-season shoot out. Four of the last five head-to-head clashes since 2017 played to totals of 5 or more goals.

The Impact played to a 2-2 draw with Deportivo Saprissa in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions League opener Wednesday. New England Revolution was just 3-6-8 away from home last season, and the Montreal Impact was 8-6-3 at Stade Olympique.

Over/Under (O/U)

Luckily, Montreal Impact plays their home games in a dome, as it’s expected to be 20 degrees on the final day of February in Montreal. The outside weather shouldn’t affect the goal scoring in this one, but the early season match will. Back the UNDER 2.5 (+110) as the more profitable side of the total bet. Both teams played to negative goal differentials last season, and offense isn’t a strength for either club.

DC United (-106) is favored at home, having won the last three head-to-head meetings dating back to the 2017 campaign. United outscored the Rapids 6-3 over those three games. Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta have since moved on, and Arriola may be sidelined for the full season following his preseason injury. There is value in backing COLORADO RAPIDS (+250) against a different DC United club than with which they’ve historically struggled.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 2.5 (+130). The last two head-to-head showdowns played to goal totals of 5 and 3, but this is the earliest in the season the two sides have met. DC United lost firepower this offseason and Colorado Rapids shored up the defense with additions of Lalas Abubakar and Auston Trusty, despite the loss of GK Tim Howard to retirement.

It will also be 40 degrees in D.C. Saturday afternoon, and it will be another factor favoring the Under in the season opener.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY (+110) enters this match slightly favored on the road against Vancouver Whitecaps FC (+220). SKC has had a lot of success in the past against Vancouver, and it’s unlikely much will be changed in this one. SKC has three wins and a draw in the past four meetings in this series.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-154) is one of my favorite plays of the entire Week 1 MLS slate. Last season, Sporting Kansas City saw at least 3 goals scored in total in each of their final six games, and they allowed at least two goals in the final six. SKC yielded 37 goals on the road last season in 17 matches.

They worked to shore up their defense during the offseason, but preseason was more of the same. They had plenty of defensive lapses and goals conceded. Vancouver also was very giving, coughing up 23 goals in 17 home matches.

ATLANTA UNITED FC (+110) is an awfully tough assignment for the fledgling Nashville SC (+210) club in its first-ever MLS regular-season match. The schedule maker wanted to get a jump on the geographical rivalry, but they did Nashville no favors sending last season’s semifinalists in for the opener. This is a very deep Atlanta United team, and they’ll flex a little muscle, pulling away in the second half.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-154) could potentially be taken care of by Atlanta all by themselves. They were the second-highest scoring team in the Eastern Conference last season, averaging 1.71 goals per game, and they’ll have the good fortune of facing an expansion team in the season opener. They’ll find the back of the net early and often in Week 1.
