TFC (+250) was dealt a huge blow in the preseason, as new designated player Piatti suffered a multi-week hamstring injury. This shifts things dramatically in favor of the SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (+100). The Earthquakes finished eighth in the Western Conference last season and just missed out on the playoffs with a record of 13-16-5, however they were 10-5-2 at home while Toronto FC was just 4-6-7 on the road.

San Jose earned a 2-1 victory in last year’s head-to-head meeting. Another factor in favor of the home side: It will be 61 degrees in San Jose Saturday, compared to just 26 degrees in Toronto.

Take the UNDER 2.5 (+130) with the notable absence of Piatti for TFC. Houston Dynamo (+125) have won three of the last four head-to-head meetings, including a 4-2 win last October, but the value lies on an LA Galaxy club coming off another postseason trip last season. Houston Dynamo was 10-3-4 at home last season, but just 2-15 on the road, showing their true worth lies somewhere in between.

Back the visitors as the more profitable side in the season opener. Hernandez will make his impact immediately.

The OVER 3.5 (+110) is the play. This is the only game of Saturday’s MLS slate with the goal total set at 3.5 as opposed to 2.5, in what’s expected to be an early-season shoot out. Four of the last five head-to-head clashes since 2017 played to totals of 5 or more goals.

The Impact played to a 2-2 draw with Deportivo Saprissa in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions League opener Wednesday. New England Revolution was just 3-6-8 away from home last season, and the Montreal Impact was 8-6-3 at Stade Olympique.

Luckily, Montreal Impact plays their home games in a dome, as it’s expected to be 20 degrees on the final day of February in Montreal. The outside weather shouldn’t affect the goal scoring in this one, but the early season match will. Back the UNDER 2.5 (+110) as the more profitable side of the total bet. Both teams played to negative goal differentials last season, and offense isn’t a strength for either club.

Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta have since moved on, and Arriola may be sidelined for the full season following his preseason injury. There is value in backing COLORADO RAPIDS (+250) against a different DC United club than with which they’ve historically struggled.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-154) is one of my favorite plays of the entire Week 1 MLS slate. Last season, Sporting Kansas City saw at least 3 goals scored in total in each of their final six games, and they allowed at least two goals in the final six. SKC yielded 37 goals on the road last season in 17 matches.

They worked to shore up their defense during the offseason, but preseason was more of the same. They had plenty of defensive lapses and goals conceded. Vancouver also was very giving, coughing up 23 goals in 17 home matches.

The schedule maker wanted to get a jump on the geographical rivalry, but they did Nashville no favors sending last season’s semifinalists in for the opener. This is a very deep Atlanta United team, and they’ll flex a little muscle, pulling away in the second half.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-154) could potentially be taken care of by Atlanta all by themselves. They were the second-highest scoring team in the Eastern Conference last season, averaging 1.71 goals per game, and they’ll have the good fortune of facing an expansion team in the season opener. They’ll find the back of the net early and often in Week 1.

OVER 2.5 (-139) is worth a small-unit wager, perhaps in a parlay with Orlando City SC on the 3-way line. Orlando scored at least two goals in each of their final three home outings last season, and they allowed at least two goals in five of the final six. The Over is a good bet.

While it’s a position of strength for Dallas, they’ll do well to grab a draw in this opener against the visitors in this battle of postseason teams from last year.

UNDER 2.5 (+110) is also a value play in this one, as both teams get their sea legs. Look for a slow start, perhaps even a scoreless draw in the first half, before the teams discover their offense. This game won’t be mistaken for a track meet, that’s for sure. We have had three clean sheets in the past five meetings between these two clubs.
