Eagles QB Kenny Pickett will witness firsthand why Steelers ousted him

The Pittsburgh Steelers face their former QB Kenny Pickett in Week 15 as Russell Wilson continues to prove he’s the upgrade they needed.

Sorry, Kenny Pickett: Russell Wilson has been everything you weren’t for the Pittsburgh Steelers. And now, Pickett has a front-row seat to see exactly why the Steel City opted to bring in some much-needed quarterback expertise during the 2024 offseason.

The ‘Kenny Football’ experience in Pittsburgh came to an abrupt end when the former Steelers QB requested a trade, declining to compete for the starting job with Wilson heading into 2024.

For fans of the Black and Gold, his 13 touchdowns to 13 interceptions, six fumbles, and a well below-average 6.3 yards per attempt over two years in Pittsburgh made it easy to support a QB change.

Regardless of the outcome of Week 15’s contest between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, Wilson remains a clear upgrade over Pickett. Backup Titans quarterback and former Steeler Mason Rudolph set the blueprint for Pickett’s turbulent exit, leaving his only notable Steelers accomplishment as beating the inconsistent Mitchell Trubisky for the starting quarterback job.

One year ago today, the Steelers offense changed forever

One year ago, the Steelers fired OC Matt Canada, starting a journey to rebuild their offense and achieve success under OC Arthur Smith.

One year ago today, fans of the Black and Gold danced in the streets of Pittsburgh, and excitement could be seen on the face of every member of the Steelers organization. On November 21, 2023, the Pittsburgh Steelers fired OC Matt Canada.

Under Canada’s 2023 offensive scheme, through his eleven games that season, the Steelers’ offense posted five games with 17 points or less. His last game as offensive coordinator came in Week 11, following a mere 10 points scored against the Cleveland Browns.

While it took some time, the Steelers would score 34 points against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16 and 30 points against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 17.

While fans were forced to play the blame game between then-starting QB Kenny Pickett, backup QB Mitchell Trubisky, and former OC Matt Canada, the offense improved to 19.7 points per game without Canada calling the plays.

Ultimately, one year ago today marked the beginning of the journey to solving the Steelers’ offensive issues and resulted in an impressive offense led by OC Arthur Smith and QB Russell Wilson.

Injury analysis of Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky is still leaves questions

Injury analysis of #Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky is still leaves questions:

The status of Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky still  appears to be unknown.

Just this week, the Bills both signed quarterback Mike White to their practice squad and saw Mitchell Trubisky return to practice from a knee injury.

However, it’s not just that cut and dry with the latter. Trubisky returned during a limited time period when the media was able to watch practice. It seems possible that after that, Trubisky did not do much.

That’s because Trubisky was spotted still wearing a large brace on his leg and the analysis didn’t seem too optimistic either.

Injury analyst for the Bills, “Banged Up Bills” on Twitter/X,  gave their opinion on the way Trubisky looked. The bleak outlook suggests Trubisky still needs time.

The breakdown can be found below:

Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky sports large knee brace at practice

#Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky sports large knee brace at practice:

Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is currently battling a knee injury and it’s unclear how long he will be sidelined.

After taking a knock against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Buffalo’s 9-3 preseason win last weekend, Trubisky has been dealing with the problem. Earlier this week, head coach Sean McDermott declared Trubisky “week-to-week.”

We might have to consider taking the over on this one after Trubisky was spotted at practice on Wednesday.

Trubisky, who re-signed in Buffalo to backup Josh Allen again earlier this offseason, has a pretty sizeable brace on his knee. Trubisky was seen by cameras while he was watching the practice.

The image of Trubisky can be found in the WGRZ-TV clip below:

Add Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky to the injury report

Add #Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky to the injury report:

The Buffalo Bills are down another quarterback.

After third-string QB Shane Buechele sustained a season-ending neck injury, No. 2 Mitchell Trubisky hurt his knee against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Buffalo’s 9-3 preseason win on Saturday.

During the contest, Trubisky was injured and left the game a short time later. Speaking via video conference, head coach Sean McDermott announced that Trubisky’s injury is at a more serious level.

According to the Bills coach, Trubisky is considered “week-to-week.”

With the 2024 NFL regular season slated to begin in just a fews weeks time, it adds an extra layer of concern. Could Buffalo end up adding another quarterback?

Per McDermott, those considerations are underway.

Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky out at Steelers due to injury

#Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky out at #Steelers due to injury:

It was not a day that quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was hoping to have against his former team.

Trubisky, who re-signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason after previously leaving the team for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was injured against his… other former team.

Trubisky struggled and had an interception in the contest and then left the game due to a knee injury the Bills announced.

After scrambling and taking off for a gain of a few yards, the QB stood up and was limping. After that series, the Buffalo coaching staff played it safe and took him out.

It’s unclear at the time of posting if Trubisky’s removal from the game was precautionary or not.

The recently signed Ben DiNucci replaced Trubisky in the lineup in the second quarter.

Bills Wire will provide updates when information is made available.

Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky on re-signing: ‘Feels like coming back home’

#Bills’ Mitchell Trubisky on re-signing: ‘Feels like coming back home’

Mitchell Trubisky will have wished this last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers went better than they had. He might still be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Even so, Trubisky is not looking back. Rather, he’s looking forward and he’s happy where he is now.

After a previous one-year stint with the Buffalo Bills, Trubisky decided to re-sign with the team this offseason. He told the Buffalo News that coming back to western New York felt like the comforts of home.

“It’s been awesome,” Trubisky said. “I mean, I was gone for two years, but it feels like it really flew by. But the fact that they wanted me back here and it just feels like coming back home. I feel really comfortable.”

Formerly a No. 2 overall selection of the Chicago Bears, Trubisky’s career certainly did not go to plan. Even so, Buffalo’s front office likes him.

Trubisky’s playing style is closer to Josh Allen’s than other backups the Bills have previously had. He can sling it, but can move too.

General manager Brandon Beane hinted at that after the QB decided to re-sign in Buffalo.

“When he was here, had his number been called, had Josh gone down, we felt really confident,” said Beane earlier this offseason. “I think if you looked at what he did in his preseason time, it probably stood out amongst any of the other guys we’ve had.”

The highlighted note here should be Trubisky’s comfort above all else. It’s often overlooked, but having a supportive and happy No. 2 who does not ruffle any feathers can be very positive for a locker room. The Bills have that.

Caleb Williams could be different than those Bears QBs who came before him

The hope is Caleb Williams can be the franchise quarterback that the Bears have been craving for a long time.

The Chicago Bears are expecting a lot out of Caleb Williams, who they selected first overall in the 2024 NFL draft. They could have had any player that they wanted, and they went with him. The hope is that he can be the franchise quarterback that this team has been craving for a long time.

There are a lot of Bears fans that feel like they’ve been down this road before. Whether it was Mitchell Trubisky or Justin Fields. While those guys had their moments, they didn’t prove to be the long-term answer.

Williams needs to be different than those who came before him. He just might be, too. Williams showed a lot of promise during his college career at USC (and Oklahoma before that). He’s also the undisputed number one guy heading into his rookie season.

This is also a much better situation for Williams than his predecessors. This might be the greatest collection of weapons that a No. 1 pick quarterback has ever had. Chicago already had receiver DJ Moore and tight end Cole Kmet on the roster. But they added receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, along with running back D’Andre Swift. This offense is going to score some points if Williams plays well.

Williams has a chance to be different, and he knows it. If he embraces this and uses his talents to his advantage, the Bears will be a great football team in short order. Don’t let the past dictate the future.

NFL insider: Bears can’t risk Caleb Williams going to Commanders and becoming a superstar

The Bears can’t afford Caleb Williams ending up in Washington and becoming a superstar and they know it.

Will the Chicago Bears’ past continue to haunt them ahead of the 2024 NFL draft?

Everyone remembers the 2017 NFL draft when the Bears moved up one spot — to No. 2 overall — to select UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. That was the same year the Kansas City Chiefs moved up to No. 10 and selected Patrick Mahomes. The rest is history.

Trubisky showed some flashes early in his career, but it didn’t take long to realize he was not a franchise-level passer.

It’s not fair to pile on the Bears for selecting Trubisky over Mahomes. Sure, it’s laughable in retrospect, but the truth is that every other team passed on a chance to trade up for Mahomes. Even noted quarterback guru and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan passed up the opportunity to select Mahomes.

That brings us to the 2024 NFL draft. The Bears have the No. 1 overall pick for the second consecutive year, thanks to a one-sided trade with the Carolina Panthers. Last year, the Bears moved down and acquired multiple picks, including No. 1 this year and star wide receiver D.J. Moore, and the Panthers chose Bryce Young over C.J. Stroud.

Meanwhile, the Bears were content to allow Justin Fields to continue to develop heading into his third NFL season.

Was it the right decision? We shall see. But the Bears have a chance for redemption if they have questions on Fields. And there are plenty of reasons to question if Fields has shown enough. Remember, as a fourth-year player, he is eligible for a contract extension, and he won’t come cheap. Has he shown enough to Chicago to consider giving him a megadeal? Unlikely, or the discussions would’ve already happened.

With the No. 1 pick this year, the Bears can take USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams is the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick, whether the Bears keep or trade the pick.

Williams isn’t a perfect prospect, but he has elite tools with a massive ceiling. The Washington Commanders, who have the No. 2 overall pick and will likely take a quarterback, reportedly love Williams — a Washington, D.C. native.

Would the Bears consider moving down one spot and passing on the chance to take Williams?

Longtime NFL writer Ben Volin doesn’t think so.

“It goes back to the 2017 draft when they picked Mitchell Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, and this is a franchise that can’t risk doing that again. They cannot risk Caleb Williams going to Washington and being a superstar,” Volin said Tuesday in an appearance on the “Sports Junkies” in Washington via Lou DiPietro of Audacy.

Volin has some maturity concerns with Williams and says, ideally, he thinks the Bears would love to move down one spot.

“I think in a vacuum, they would love to swap with Washington, go back to No. 2 and take Jayden Daniels and not worry about all the headaches that Caleb Williams brings, but he’s so talented, and that franchise is so desperate for quarterbacks that they’re just gonna have to bite their lip and talk themselves into accepting everything that comes along with him.”

Unless the Commanders make a historic offer to move up only one spot, the Bears are taking Williams for all of the reasons Volin stated. Washington GM Adam Peters is unlikely to make that kind of offer as he looks to use the Commanders’ extra draft capital to restock the roster while using the No. 2 pick on either Daniels or Drake Maye.

Washington happens to be in a good position heading into the draft.

Why the Steelers would be perfect fit for Justin Fields

The Bears are most likely going to trade Justin Fields this offseason. Right now, the Steelers are emerging as a top landing spot.

The Chicago Bears are looking like an NFL organization that is going to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft. They have the No. 1 pick (via the Carolina Panthers), and a lot of people think they’re eyeing USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

If Chicago were to select Williams first overall, they would most likely move on from Justin Fields, their former first-round pick in 2021, who hasn’t blossomed into a star the way that we thought he would. Fields has shown flashes, but that isn’t going to win you a Super Bowl. You need a star at some point. Fields still may become a star but having the No. 1 pick — with a potential generational talent up for grabs — rushes that evaluation.

If the Bears are to move on from Fields, a quarterback-needy team that doesn’t have a top-10 pick is going to consider him. One team that makes perfect sense is the Pittsburgh Steelers, an organization that values winning and are not afraid to make a big move.

Fields may or may not turn into a star, but Pittsburgh may consider trying him out. They just released former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph is set to be a free agent. That leaves only Kenny Pickett on the roster for next year.

To be honest, Pickett is in the same boat as Fields. He was a first-round pick and had a lot of expectations but hasn’t lived up to them yet. He has shown flashes but even Fields has been better up to this point. Pickett has done more winning, but he is in a better situation. If Fields went to Pittsburgh, he might find more success.

Seeing Fields go to the Steelers would be amazing. He’d have a chance to take his career to the next level while the Bears would be starting fresh. Head coach Mike Tomlin has made it known that he likes Fields, so it is a perfect fit for them in every way. With Tomlin at the helm, you might see Fields take steps that would be impossible for him to take in Chicago.

The Steelers are a smart team that knows how to move on before it becomes too late. Pickett is not the guy and they know it. If they feel that Fields can give them a better chance to win, they will do it.
