Steelers must create competition in the quarterback room

Kenny Pickett needs to be pushed and earn his starting job.

There is a real possibility that in the next month, the Pittsburgh Steelers will only have one quarterback on the roster. The Steelers have released Mitch Trubisky and it seems highly unlikely Mason Rudolph will re-sign with the team.

This means that at least in the short run, Pickett is going to be it. After the regular season, when asked if he believed the 2024 starting quarterback was on the team, head coach Mike Tomlin said yes.

Let’s hope Tomlin is rethinking that idea and doesn’t get complacent with Pickett as the starter. The Steelers have been reportedly connected to guys like Ryan Tannehill and Justin Fields and the 2024 NFL draft has a very strong quarterback class.

Last season the Steelers passing offense was anemic and it all started with Pickett. The confident passer we saw in preseason disappeared when the regular season started. This led to him not getting his starting job back despite his recovery from ankle surgery. Pittsburgh cannot rely on bargain-basement free agents and developmental rookies to round out the depth chart if they want to force Pickett to either put up or shut up.

NFL analyst Albert Breer: Mitch Trubisky to Bills makes ‘all the sense in the world’

Kyle Allen or Mitch Trubisky?

There is good and bad news on the Bills roster relating to the quarterback position.

Starting with the negative, the Bills currently only have one quarterback on their team. They’ll need another.

On the plus side, that one is Josh Allen, one of the best in the NFL.

On a serious note, Kyle Allen was the backup for the Bills last season. He’s slated to be a free agent. He might not cost much to bring back.

But there is an option for the Bills to consider instead of Kyle Allen: Mitch Trubisky.

Trubisky was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers and is already a free agent.

The 29-year-old previously spent the 2021 season backing up Josh Allen with the Bills. All along the dialogue from both Trubisky and the Bills was that it would be a one-and-done scenario where Trubisky would leave after a year if there was a chance for him to start somewhere.

Exactly that happened and it did not work out in Pittsburgh.

All things considered, Trubisky is now a name to watch when free agency opens in March. One longtime NFL analyst agrees.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote in his post-Super Bowl roundup that he believes Buffalo is a genuine option for Trubisky.

Trubisky was originally brought on board to backup Josh Allen because the team believed he had a similar play style to their starter. More so, Trubisky’s skills match Josh Allen more than Kyle Allen does.

But for Breer, it’s much more simple than that. He thinks Trubisky is just… better.

Breer’s breakdown can be found below:

Mitch Trubisky going back to Buffalo would make all the sense in the world. He had a really nice year there in 2021, to the point where Brian Daboll seriously considered taking the quarterback to the New York Giants with him. And while the Bills were happy to have Josh Allen’s buddy Kyle Allen there last year, Trubisky would help to upgrade the room.

5 things QB Mitch Trubisky’s release means for the Steelers

Things that Mitch Trubisky’s release does and could signal for the Steelers.

The Mitch Trubisky experiment in Pittsburgh was a complete and utter failure. One of the final quarterback-related moves made by the previous administration — general manager Kevin Colbert — is now in the past. As the team looks to its future, here are five things that Trubisky’s release does and could signal for the franchise.

Mitch Trubisky’s time with Steelers is over

Former UNC football quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be a free agent after the Pittsburgh Steelers released him on Monday.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be looking for a new home for the 2024 NFL season.

Just a day after the 2023 season ended with Kansas City beating San Francisco, Pittsburgh made some roster moves including releasing three players. Among those three players was Trubisky, who spent two seasons with the time.

Trubisky joined the Steelers back in 2022, the same year they drafted Kenny Pickett in the first round. As Trubisky entered the season as the starter, Pickett eventually took over and won the job, moving Trubisky into a backup role with the team, which he had here in the 2023 season as well.

A report from Mike Garafolo stated that the two sides mutually agreed to part this offseason.

This is now a chance for the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft to get his career back on track. He should have suitors on the free agent market, likely in a backup role.

Social media reacts to Pittsburgh Steelers releasing Mitch Trubisky

Social media reacts to the Pittsburgh Steelers releasing former UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Mitch Trubisky Monday, sending social media into a frenzy as the former UNC star hits free agency.

Trubisky didn’t have the Pittsburgh career he imagined, despite having a plethora of opportunities to become the next franchise quarterback. Instead, Trubisky struggled, starting seven games out of twelve games played, resulting in a 2-5-0 record.

In those 12 games, Trubisky completed 64.1% of his passes for 1884 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions. A huge problem for Trubisky was his pocket awareness, getting sacked at a 5.9% clip.

The move stems from the Steelers’ loaded QB room after Mason Rudolph’s impressive late run last season, while their first-round draft investment Kenny Pickett was nursing an injury.

Despite not working out in Pittsburgh, Trubisky should still get plenty of suitors looking to bring the Tar Heel in to compete for a backup role. Football fans discussed the short Trubisky era in Pittsburg, expressing what went wrong and what could be next.

Let’s take a look at how social media reacted to the Pittsburgh Steelers releasing Mitch Trubisky.

Steelers fans react to news of QB Mitch Trubisky’s release

Mitch Trubisky’s time with the Steelers wasn’t great.

Less than 24 hours after the Super Bowl, the Pittsburgh Steelers went to work, releasing three players including quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky has been much maligned during his tenure in Pittsburgh and as you can see by the tweets below, he will not be missed in the Steel City.

Steelers make 2 more roster moves in addition to QB Mitch Trubisky

The Steelers released Mitch Trubisky, Chuks Okorafor and Pressley Harvin III on Monday.

The NFL offseason officially started today and the Pittsburgh Steelers wasted no time making moves to clear salary cap space.

The team announced the release of quarterback Mitch Trubisky, offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor and punter Pressley Harvin III.

The writing has been on the wall for all three weeks now; it was only a matter of the Steelers doing the deed.

Trubisky appeared in 12 games since signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent in 2022. Trubisky had a 2-5 record throwing in seven starts for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Okorafor, selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft, played in 77 games with 59 starts. The full-time role he took over in 2020 was rescinded midway through the 2023 season in what was deemed a behavioral issue, and Okorafor was replaced by first-round rookie Broderick Jones.

Per Jason Fitzgerald at Over the Cap, the move saves the Steelers $8.75 million on the salary cap, leaving an estimated $3.1 of dead money on the books.

Harvin, a seventh-round 2021 NFL draft selection, punted 217 times for 9,473 yards (43.7-yard average).

The trio of moves saves Pittsburgh roughly $12.65M in cap space.

Steelers release QB Mitch Trubisky

The Mitch Trubisky experiment is over in Pittsburgh.

The Mitch Trubisky experiment has run its course in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have released the 2017 second overall NFL draft pick, who appeared in 12 games after signing with the Pittsburgh as a free agent in 2022.

Trubisky, who will turn 30 in August, was set to earn $4.25 million next season. With bonuses, the cap hit would’ve been $7.556 million, or 3.1 percent of the team’s limit.

In seven starts, Trubisky had a 2-5 record. He threw for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With the Trubisky era coming to an end, the Steelers are now tasked with finding a replacement to back up Kenny Pickett or take over the reins while Pickett develops in a reserve role.

How Patrick Mahomes, Matt Nagy make the Bears look bad

Both Matt Nagy and Patrick Mahomes both make the Chicago Bears look bad for the way things went down in recent years.

A lot of people have made the Chicago Bears look bad, mostly themselves. They have been one of the worst franchises in the NFL this century. They hardly go to the playoffs and they continue to lose to the Green Bay Packers regularly. The hope is that they come out of it with this current regime in charge but still have much work to do.

The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs faced off in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night. For a lot of the game, the 49ers played very well and looked like they were going to win. That was until the very end when Patrick Mahomes and his crew took victory from the hands of defeat.

Mahomes drove the Chiefs down the field to tie the game late and to win it in overtime. It was a legendary moment for him as he won a second straight Super Bowl and his third in five seasons. It has been an incredible run for the now three-time Super Bowl MVP.

This is a player that makes the Bears look terrible. In possibly the worst draft evaluation in the history of the NFL, the Bears took North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick (that they traded up one spot for) in the 2017 NFL draft. With the 10th overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to land Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Trubisky is one of the biggest busts in franchise history. He couldn’t do anything to help the Bears offense take a step forward. Their defense was all-world during his tenure with the team, and he won some games as a result, but he was truly terrible.

As for Mahomes, his third Super Bowl victory with the Chiefs on Sunday cemented him as a 28-year-old living legend. He is already one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history and his career might not even be halfway over. That is the guy the Bears passed on.

Oh, by the way, his offensive coordinator is former Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who everybody in Chicago blamed for their offensive problems. Nagy certainly had his fair share of mistakes but you don’t win anything if you have a terrible roster, which the Bears did when Nagy was most criticized.

In 2018, Nagy won Coach of the Year and led the team to the playoffs. They fell off a cliff after that, and the poor play of Trubisky was a huge reason. Now, he has a legend in Mahomes running his offense and he is a two-time Super Bowl champion coordinator. Andy Reid is an incredible coach, but don’t be surprised if Nagy takes over when Reid is done and wins big, as well.

Any coordinator or coach will look extra special if they have a quarterback deliver the goods, the way that Mahomes does. Any of them will also look bad if they have a failed quarterback, the way Trubisky was.

Justin Fields has been an improvement over Trubisky, but he doesn’t win nearly as much because the roster around him was way worse. Now, Chicago is expected to move on from Fields before he even gets a crack at a great roster. Meanwhile, Mahomes will be going for Super Bowl championship No. 4 in the wrong uniform next year.
