Mississippi State at Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Mississippi State at Tennessee odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The No. 14 Mississippi State Bulldogs (15-3, 3-2 SEC) visit the seventh-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (16-2, 3-2) Tuesday. Tip-off from Food City Center in Knoxville is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Mississippi State vs. Tennessee odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Mississippi State bounced back Saturday with a big 84-81 overtime home win vs. the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels after dropping two tough games to top 10 teams. The Bulldogs didn’t cover as 6-point favorites vs. their instate rivals — with the Over (147) hitting — but it was a nice recovery after losses to then-No. 7, now-No. 9 Kentucky (95-90 at home Jan. 11) and at No. 1 Auburn (88-66 Jan. 14). Mississippi State dominated inside vs. Ole Miss, finishing with a 51-29 rebound advantage and outscoring the Rebels 40-24 in the paint. G Riley Kugel came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points, including 2 critical free throws late in OT, to lead the Bulldogs.

Tennessee lost a heartbreaker at unranked Vanderbilt 76-75 Saturday, getting upset as a 5.5-point favorite with the Over (142) cashing. G Chaz Lanier scored a team-high 17 points, but missed a crucial free throw with 2.8 seconds left that would have tied it. G Zakai Zeigler added 16 points and 10 assists for his third double-double of the season.

Mississippi State at Tennessee picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 74, Mississippi State 64

Moneyline

PASS.

This is a huge bounce back spot for Tennessee (-300), which will take care of business at home, but the price is too steep.

Against the spread

BET TENNESSEE -6.5 (-115).

Looking to rebound after the upset loss at Vandy, the Volunteers will be happy to be back in Knoxville after a tough stretch of 4 games against solid opponents — 3 were ranked and 3 were on the road.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State has struggled to cover lately, going 0-3 ATS in its last 3 games and 2-4 ATS in its last 6.

While the Bulldogs have won the last 2 vs. the Vols, Tennessee is 7-3 straight up and 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.

The Vols are known for their tough defense. They allow just 58.8 points per game (PPG) to lead the SEC and rank fifth in the nation. With a +18.0 PPG differential, they’re a tough challenge, even for a good Bulldogs squad.

Mississippi State yields 70.1 PPG — 13th in the SEC — which will be a problem against Tennessee.

TAKE VOLUNTEERS -6.5 (-115).

Over/Under

I’m not really feeling the O/U (140.5) here, so I’ll be PASSING.

The Over is 5-3-2 in the last 10 Mississippi State-Tennessee matchups. The Bulldogs are 5-5 O/U in their last 10, while the Volunteers are 3-7 O/U.

While Tennessee’s defense is a strength, I can’t trust Mississippi State’s defense to keep this Under. AVOID betting the total.

Mississippi State vs. Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Mississippi State at Tennessee odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-7, 0-5 SEC) and the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (7-1, 4-1) meet at Neyland Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Mississippi State vs. Tennessee odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Mississippi State snapped its 7-game losing streak with a 45-20 victory over UMass, covering as a 19-point home favorite and going over the 59-point total. QB Michael Van Buren Jr. scored through the air and added 2 rushing touchdowns, while RB Johnnie Daniels tallied 92 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Tennessee extended its winning streak to 3 with a 28-18 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, though they didn’t cover the 17.5-point spread. The game surpassed the 45.5-point total, driven by RB Dylan Sampson‘s 142 yards and 2 touchdowns on 27 carries. TE Miles Kitsekman contributed with 6 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown from QB Nico Iamaleava.

Mississippi State vs. Tennessee picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 31, Mississippi State 14

Moneyline

PASS.

Tennessee (-5000) will win this game, but obviously, you are not going to bet $5,000 to win $100 in return. Look to the spread and/or total.

Against the spread

BET MISSISSIPPI STATE +25.5 (-110).

Mississippi State has covered the spread in 4 of its last 5, while Tennessee has failed to cover in 3 of the last 4. The Vols control the pace with long, sustained drives and a solid run game, which wears down defenses. Tennessee’s defense has been effective, holding all opponents under 20 points. However, with a spread of 24, The Bulldogs should keep this game competitive like they’ve been able to do consistently this season.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 61.5 (-105).

Tennessee’s defense is set to keep scoring low, thanks to their impressive sack rate and elite red-zone performance. The Volunteers have hit the Under in 4 of their last 5 games, fueled by a relentless pass rush that disrupts opposing offenses, especially teams like Mississippi State with weaker pass protection. The Bulldogs’ offense has lacked consistency and struggles to sustain drives, and Tennessee’s top-notch, red-zone defense often holds opponents to field goals rather than touchdowns.

Mississippi State at Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Mississippi State at Tennessee odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs (11-2, 0-1 SEC) visit the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers (11-2, 1-0) Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Mississippi State at Tennessee odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

This game pits 2 of the top defenses in the nation against each other.  Tennessee ranks 3rd in the nation allowing only 53.2 points a game and Mississippi State is 4th at 54.5.

After giving up a season high 78 points in a 9-point loss to Alabama as a slight favorite on Wednesday, the Bulldogs will look to recover in this game against a top-10 opponent in Tennessee.

The Vols edged Ole Miss 63-59 on Wednesday, but didn’t cover as 7.5-point favorites. Tennessee has only lost to Colorado and a top-5 Arizona team on the road.

Offense will be limited in this game, and it could easily be a game in which the first to 60 will win.

Mississippi State at Tennessee and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 63, Mississippi State 57

Moneyline

PASS.

This game will be close. Tennessee is much better than Mississippi State, but the defenses will keep this game tight. Nevertheless, I do not see the Bulldogs pulling out a victory. So, neither of these numbers are worth making a wager on.

Against the spread

BET MISSISSIPPI STATE +9.5 (-110).

This line has already dropped a full point since it came out. This is because the books know they hung a bad number giving Tennessee double-digits.

The defenses involved in this game will keep it low scoring and close and 10 points is too high to give in such a matchup; 9.5 points is also too high. Give me the Bulldogs +9.5 (-110) as my favorite play.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 122.5 (-105)

With 2 top-5 defenses in the country playing, this game should be an automatic Under play. If the number were not so low, it would be my favorite play. As it is, with the number meaning the teams barely need to get to 60, it is only a strong lean to the Under.

Mississippi State at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. UT dropped to No. 17 in this week’s Coaches Poll after twin losses a week ago. In losses to Florida and Missouri, Tennessee shot just 35.8% from the floor while being out-rebounded, 68-58. The Volunteers also struggled mightily at the free-throw line, going just 25-for-46 (54.3%).
  2. The Bulldogs scored 78.7 points per game in going 8-2 straight up from Nov. 30-Jan. 9. MSU has been held to just 61.5 PPG while going 1-3 since. Three-point shooting has been a big culprit in the slide: MSU shot a robust 39.5% from distance in the 8-2 stretch; the Bulldogs are at 28.0% from distance over their last four games.
  3. A ball-hawking Tennessee defense has forced turnovers on 24.6% of opponent possessions. That’s the 17th-best rate among NCAA-I teams. Mississippi State has a forced-turnover percentage of just 18.2% (254th NCAA-I).

Mississippi State at Tennessee: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 66, Mississippi State 59

Money line (ML)

Consider middling this game, taking Tennessee on the ML and Mississippi State with the points, if you can get a Vols -500 tag. If not, PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

MSU was leading or within 6 points of Alabama in a hard-fought road game Saturday against the No. 8 Crimson Tide before losing 81-73. That was with Alabama logging a 57.4% effective field-goal mark.

Tennessee has a couple of young guards dinged up: Santiago Vescovi and Jaden Springer are listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game. How much will those two play? And will the Vols be caught looking forward to a high-profile Saturday game with Kansas?

The Bulldogs are just 1-3 ATS in their last three visits to Knoxville, but a 9.5-point spread would be the largest in this series since 2014. Figure on MSU doing enough on the glass to stay within 5-7 points for big chunks of the game. Getting 10 or more points would be preferable, but BULLDOGS +9.5 (-110) has enough bite.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are in the bottom-75 nationally in pace of play (possessions per contest). The total here doesn’t reflect enough of that or the elite level of UT’s defense. TAKE THE UNDER 127.5 (-105).
