UFC’s Miranda Maverick wants a piece of Molly McCann, but it has nothing to do with ‘clout’

The way Miranda Maverick sees it, Molly McCann has a spot in the UFC women’s flyweight rankings that belongs to her.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Molly McCann[/autotag] currently is No 15 in the official UFC women’s flyweight rankings, and quite frankly that doesn’t sit well with [autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag].

Maverick made that clear Saturday after her clean-sweep unanimous decision win over Shanna Young at UFC Fight Night 214. When Maverick (11-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) got her time on the microphone, she used it to call out McCann – again.

“I’ve called out Molly McCann three, four, five times, even before she had clout,” Maverick explained to reporters afterward. “And now that she does have the so-called clout that she has through Paddy (Pimblett) and through her own finishes against who I see not being as skilled of fighters as she should have to fight to get in the top 15, and I’m ready to kind of take that little title away from her. How is she in the top 15 and I’m not, you know?”

[lawrence-related id=2594426,2594423]

McCann’s placement in the 125-pound rankings is on the strength of three consecutive wins against Ji Yeon Kim, Luana Carolina and Hannah Goldy, the latter two of which came by knockout. Maverick’s win over Young was her second in a row. Prior to back-to-back wins, Maverick had back-to-back losses, which kicked off with a split decision to Maycee Barber that she calls “a robbery” and still hasn’t let go of.

The result altered the trajectory of Maverick’s career, but she’s ready to rectify that and hopes to do so in a fight with McCann.

“I think I won that fight (vs. Barber), and (McCann is) standing exactly where I should be,” Maverick said. “And I’m ready to get back up there, into the top 15, and take the spot that is mine.”

Miranda Maverick says Shanna Young hospitalized, UFC 278 fight canceled

Just hours before UFC 278 weigh-ins, Saturday’s card has lost a fight.

Just hours before UFC 278 weigh-ins, Saturday’s card has lost a fight.

[autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] announced early Friday morning that scheduled opponent [autotag]Shanna Young[/autotag] has been hospitalized and as a result their women’s flyweight fight has been canceled.

Maverick (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) posted a statement on the situation with Young (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) to her social media (via Instagram):

Welp…fight is off guys. @shanimalshannayoung is in the hospital from illness (assuming from weight cut) and I wish her a full and fast recovery. We were ready, super prepared, and improved so much for this camp. I made weight already (within a lb to float off by morning). I’m hoping to still watch some really good fights on Saturday and get back in the cage as soon as possible. Thank you for the support and thank you to my team who has invested in me and the people who came out for this fight @pound4poundmuaythai @eastondenver @lcasportsmanagement @jhop4p @firemarshall205! More thanks to come soon!

Miranda Maverick wants Molly McCann after UFC 278: ‘I’m ready to derail that fake hype train’

Miranda Maverick wants to put a stop to Molly McCann’s momentum.

[autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] wants to put a stop to [autotag]Molly McCann[/autotag]’s momentum.

McCann (13-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) followed up her spinning elbow knockout of Luana Carolina in March by starching Hannah Goldy in the first round this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 208, sending The O2 in London into a frenzy once again.

But Maverick (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) thinks McCann has yet to fight legitimate competition in the UFC.

“Let’s go – let’s fight it out,” Maverick told MMA Junkie Radio. “If she wants to fight now, she didn’t want to fight me before, she took on an opponent in Hannah Goldy who – I like Hannah just fine, but she’s a strawweight naturally, and she’s not even on a winning streak or anything. She’s had like three out of her last four fights were losses, and it was just another person to be thrown to Molly so that she could win in front of her home crowd. I’m ready to derail that fake hype train.”

But first, Maverick has to get past Shanna Young at UFC 278 on Aug. 20. McCann already has her sights set on Antonina Shevchenko, but Maverick explained why her against McCann is the fight to make.

“I’ve had people on both sides that are like, ‘She should get a ranked opponent,’ and I’m like, ‘She’s fought no one to where she deserves a ranked opponent,’ first of all,” Maverick said. “Two, the whole thing of, ‘You should get a ranked opponent – you don’t need to be going back down the rankings.’

“And I’m like, I plan on being in this sport for years to come. I don’t need to race my way to the top and then slowly fall back like all these fighters do. I’m ready to take my time and make money by the time I get it to the top.”

Miranda Maverick vs. Shanna Young booked for UFC 278 in Salt Lake City

The Salt Lake City lineup continues to fill out.

[autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] is staying active in 2022.

At UFC 278, Maverick (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will face former Invicta FC standout [autotag]Shanna Young[/autotag] (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in a women’s flyweight matchup. The event takes place Aug. 20 at Vivint Center in Salt Lake City with the main card airing on ESPN+ pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Maverick also confirmed the bout on Instagram.

Maverick, 24, will look to turn a standalone victory into a winning streak. Following consecutive decision losses to Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield, Maverick submitted Sabina Mazo in March.

Similar to her opponent, Young recently picked up a second-round finish victory on the heels of a two fight skid. After back-to-back losses to Macy Chiasson and Stephanie Egger, Young ground-and-pounded Gina Mazany en route to a TKO stoppage in April.

With the addition, the UFC 278 lineup includes:

  • Champion Kamaru Usman vs. Leon Edwards – for welterweight title
  • Jose Aldo vs. Merab Dvalishvili
  • Paulo Costa vs. Luke Rockhold
  • Amir Albazi vs. Francisco Figueiredo
  • Alexandr Romanov vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Jared Gordon vs. Leonardo Santos
  • Lucie Pudilova vs. Wu Yanan
  • Harry Hunsucker vs. Tyson Pedro
  • Victor Altamirano vs. Daniel Lacerda
  • Qileng Aori vs. Jay Perrin
  • A.J. Fletcher vs. Ange Loosa
  • Luis Saldana vs. Sean Woodson
  • Miranda Maverick vs. Shanna Young
