Why Iowa Will Win

And THAT’S the Iowa we all know and love.

So what that it only came up with 146 yards of total offense against Wisconsin? The D came up with three takeaways, the special teams cranked up a few big plays, and the front line was a wall against the run in the 24-10 win.

No, the O isn’t the Greatest Show on Turf like it was against Northwestern and Purdue – it came up with over 300 yards – but as long as it does everything else right all should be fine.

Stop the Minnesota running game, don’t get hit with a lot of flags, win the turnover battle. Iowa can do that against a team that has no problem grinding things down.

Keep the Gophers to under 170 rushing yards and it’ll be a win – they’re 1-3 when they don’t get to the mark and 6-0 when they do.

Michigan and Illinois are the only two teams that got past 130 against the Hawkeye D, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Minnesota Will Win

Back to doing just about everything right – at least outside of having a high end passing game – welcome to Minnesota.

The Gophers have come up with one touchdown pass in the last six games, but they’ve turned it over just twice in the last four games, penalties aren’t an issue, and the team continues to own third downs.

It’s No. 1 in the nation in third down O, No. 2 in third down D, and that’s why the team is second in the country behind Air Force in time of possession.

Basically, Minnesota should be able to out-Iowa, Iowa. As long as there aren’t a slew of turnovers, and as long as the field isn’t tilted the wrong way, the home team should be able to handle it.

What’s Going To Happen

So just how much does the battle for the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy mean in the Big Ten chase?

Considering Illinois has to play Michigan this week – and hoping for an Illini loss – Iowa will take the Big Ten West if it wins this and closes with a victory over Nebraska.

Minnesota has to win this week, beat Wisconsin next week, and it needs Illinois and Purdue to both lose. That might be tough depending on whether or not QB Tanner Morgan is healthy and ready to go, but …

For now, just getting the bronzed pig back after losing the rivalry seven straight times will be enough.

Minnesota vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Iowa doesn’t score.

Oh sure, the 51 hung out on Maryland was sassy, and the defense helped crank things up early in the season, but since the 23-20 win over Penn State the Hawkeyes have scored a grand total of 31 points in three games.

If you’re hanging 17 on Northwestern, there’s an issue.

Minnesota is weird.

It has a Spinal Tap drummer thing happening at running back, but until lsat week against Illinois the ground game kept on working just fine.

Meanwhile, the defense has been fantastic, holding everyone but Nebraska – a 30-23 Gopher win – to 14 points or fewer over six of the last seven games.

Run, dominate the time of possession battle, and keep being good at not turning the ball over. Minnesota can do that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa’s defense is still strong through the issues, and it got back to taking the ball away in bunches with three picks against Northwestern.

The Hawkeyes have been outstanding against the run, allowing fewer than 100 yards in every game but Penn State (giving up 107) and against Wisconsin (allowing 166). Minnesota doesn’t have to run for 300 yards to win, but it needs to come up with at least 150, and that’s going to be a problem.

Minnesota plays at Iowa’s speed. This should be a grind that comes down to field position, penalties, and one key big play at some point. At home, Iowa isn’t necessarily going to buckle, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is strangely awesome on the road this season.

It destroyed Colorado, had no issues with Northwestern, and was terrific against Purdue. Now it gets an Iowa team that can’t throw enough to matter and isn’t getting enough out of the ground game to pick up the slack.

Don’t expect anything fun outside of the Gopher celebration when it holds up the Floyd of Rosedale trophy after an ugly, ugly game with a wee bit more scoring than you might think.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Can we start giving Minnesota credit for having a terrific passing game led by a quarterback having a fantastic season?

Everyone knows who Joe Burrow is now. Everyone figured out how to spell Tagovailoa, is familiar with Jalen Hurts, marvels at Justin Fields, and has Justin Herbert on the NFL radar.

Does anyone have a clue who Tanner Morgan is?

He’s only the fourth-most efficient passer in college football – right after Hurts, Tagovailoa and Burrow – is third in yards per attempt, and is coming off a special day against a supposedly impenetrable Penn State defense.

Minnesota might be able to run well with Rodney Smith and its deep group of backs, but Morgan was the star last Saturday, completing 18-of-20 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns. It helps to have NFL-caliber receivers in Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson to throw to.

Iowa’s secondary has been solid, but it got can be hit for big yards by a hot quarterback, and it doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush to bother Morgan on a consistent basis.

Iowa’s Nate Stanley hit a few big passes last week against Wisconsin, but it doesn’t have a deep ball aspect to its game. Minnesota can unleash that at any time.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa does a lot of things Penn State does, only – potentially – without the turnovers.

To be fair, Penn State doesn’t have a turnover problem and Minnesota was good enough to change that for a game, but the Hawkeyes have only lost the turnover battle twice – the losses to Michigan and Penn State – and gave it away a mere three times in the other seven games.

The Hawkeyes have to hold up against the run, and they almost certainly won’t get gouged. And even if they do, they’re going to be able to keep this close.

Last week, Jonathan Taylor was able to go off on the Iowa run defense, but 1) that’s Jonathan Taylor, 2) it was an aberration, and 3) the Hawkeyes still almost pulled out the win. They’re 0-3 when allowing 120 rushing yards or more, and 6-0 when allowing fewer.

To hold up, Iowa has to control the time of possession battle – it’s great at that – and it needs Stanley to keep hitting his third down plays. Sean Clifford kept things moving throughout the game for Penn State, and Stanley can hit those same sorts of throws to the tight ends over the middle to keep gouging the Gopher secondary. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is amazing at winning close games, and Iowa is just okay at it.

Iowa is roughly three plays away from unbeaten – or close to three plays – but that’s sort of the point. Minnesota is 5-0 in games decided by a touchdown or less, and Iowa is 2-3 in those games.

The world is watching Minnesota now, but this game doesn’t matter that much. The Gophers can lose, beat Northwestern and Wisconsin, and get to the Big Ten Championship at 11-1 with a shot at Ohio State or Penn State for an almost certain berth in the College Football Playoff.

First, the Gophers will take one step closer to getting to Indianapolis by hanging on late for yet another thrilling, close win.

Second, they leave Kinnick Stadium with the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy.
