UCLA Bruins drop to 1-5 after loss to Minnesota

The UCLA Bruins extended their losing streak after another poor offensive performance.

The UCLA Bruins have suffered several tough Big Ten losses this season, none more crushing than on Saturday night. Extending their losing streak to five games, the Bruins fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 21-17 at home.

UCLA held the lead with two minutes remaining, 17-14, but a defensive breakdown inside the five by the Bruins allowed a four-yard touchdown pass from Golden Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer. With only 27 seconds remaining, the Bruins trailed by four.

On the ensuing UCLA possession, the offense stalled.

Questionable entering the game with an ankle injury, quarterback Ethan Garbers started over Justyn Martin, finishing with 23 of 32 passing with 263 yards, a pair of interceptions, and a touchdown in the losing effort.

UCLA’s rushing offense continued to underwhelm, only averaging a dismal 1.4 yards per carry on 26 attempts for 36 yards, a testament to offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s lackluster coaching.

Head coach DeShaun Foster and the Bruins head back to the drawing board looking for answers after dropping an important game that was within their grasp.

Traveling east next Saturday to take on Rutgers, UCLA looks to snap their losing streak and find their first win in the Big Ten.

PJ Fleck-UCLA rumors hit with huge revelation ahead of Minnesota clash

This is a stunning twist.

The UCLA Bruins saw Chip Kelly leave for the offensive coordinator job at Ohio State. Immediately, Minnesota’s PJ Fleck was linked as a possible candidate for the Bruins.

There were several names that floated around as options, but Fleck’s was one of the more intriguing given his experience.

However, Fleck quickly shut down those talks and reaffirmed his commitment to Minnesota.

With the Bruins hosting the Golden Gophers in Week 7, a new update has shown just how close Fleck was to leaving.

Earlier in the week leading up to the game during an episode of the Pair and a Spare Podcast,  hosted by Gophers sideline reporter Justin Gaard (KFAN), Gopher Illustrated insider Ryan Burns (247Sports) and veteran Minnesota sports scribe Chip Scoggins (Star Tribune), Burns dropped quite a big revelation on the Fleck-UCLA link:

“I think this was as close as [PJ] Fleck has ever come, at this at this university, to leaving. I think there was so much smoke in the air and I think ultimately it comes down to UCLA [having] a $25-$27 million deficit in their athletic department. Martin Jarman is not exactly on steady footing there, as the athletic director. You have a chancellor who’s overseeing things and they’re not on steady ground and I just don’t think they had the money to pay a $5 million buyout” … “Then you gotta give [Fleck] a bump (raise). The other thing I also heard was UCLA gave all of their assistant [coaches] two-year deals so they would have had to buy out all of their assistants for that, which is multi millions of dollars.”

That sure changes a lot of things in regards to the previous rumors, especially with the way UCLA has begun this season with DeShaun Foster as the coach.

And, with Minnesota coming to town, it raises even more eyebrows.

Why UCLA vs. Minnesota is important for DeShaun Foster

The Bruins face Minnesota with a lot on the line for DeShaun Foster.

Through the first five games of head coach DeShaun Foster’s tenure with the Bruins, UCLA has been underwhelming, if not disappointing.

Heading to University Park to take on  Minnesota this weekend looking to pull the upset, the Bruins sit at 1-4, coming off three straight relatively uncompetitive games.

Certainly, a win over the Golden Gophers would reinvigorate the locker room and instill confidence on both sides of the ball, but more importantly, Foster would emerge as UCLA’s head coach of the future rather than simply a placeholder.

Lauded for his ability to connect and coach young players this offseason, Foster has been more of a cheerleader for the Bruins than a coach this season.

Under Foster’s coaching, the UCLA Bruins have yet to establish anything remotely resembling a team identity, nor have Foster’s in-game coaching decisions stood out.

In short, Foster has yet to make a mark on the program.

It is easy to overreact, with Foster only coaching his fifth game this weekend, but a win on the road in a hostile environment could potentially help establish an identity, prove his coaching prowess, and potentially save his job.

Whether or not the Bruins win this weekend against Minnesota is largely inconsequential. Even in a losing effort, if Foster can show flashes of what he brings to the table as a coach, UCLA could gain a moral victory and conviction in their head coach.

Photos from Wisconsin football’s 23-16 loss to Minnesota in the regular-season finale:

The Wisconsin Badgers were unable to take back Paul Bunyan’s Axe in a disappointing 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers played without several key starters including running back Braelon Allen, and outside linebacker Nick Herbig that missed the first half.

Wisconsin had another solid defensive performance, that was able to limit the scoring of the Golden Gophers. The Wisconsin defense got after Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who was sacked three times on the day. They also were able to slow down the Minnesota rushing attack with eight tackles for loss.

The defensive effort was not enough to lead the Badgers to victory, as the offense struggled to move the ball throughout the game. Wisconsin went only 5-16 on third downs, and a costly interception from quarterback Graham Mertz late in the game proved too much for the Badgers to overcome.

How to watch Wisconsin football battle against Minnesota for Paul Bunyan’s Axe:

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Badgers will face off against the Golden Gophers for the 132nd time to battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. Back-to-back wins would be a great way for interim head coach Jim Leonhard to end this tumultuous season and potentially put Wisconsin into a better bowl game.

It will be important for Wisconsin’s defense to stop the run against Minnesota and continue to penetrate into the backfield as they have throughout the year. The Badgers will, unfortunately, be missing outside linebacker Nick Herbig for the first half due to his ejection for targeting last week. He will be needed to help stop Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim, who has racked up over 1,500 rushing yards so far this season.

It should be an exciting game to watch as the Badgers will try to take back Paul Bunyan’s Axe after falling 23-13 to the Golden Gophers last year.

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Gophers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

The Golden Gophers don’t have to face Ohio State or Michigan. That’s good, and not having to play Maryland isn’t that bad. They miss Indiana, though, which means it’s on against Penn State and Michigan State.

Not only do that have to deal with those two – along with the home game against Rutgers – but they have to do on the road against both of those.

Combine that with a road trip to Wisconsin from the West, and there aren’t a ton of big breaks in conference play. Iowa and Purdue have to come to Minneapolis, though.

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: It’s Minnesota, so …

It’s not exactly putting its foot on the non-conference schedule gas.

It did have to go to Colorado last year – and dominated – and now it plays host after a nicely spread out start against New Mexico State and Western Illinois to tune up.

Beat Colorado, and that’s a 3-0 start before going to Michigan State. That hot start is a must because …

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a schedule built for at least seven wins, but it’s going to be sneaky-hard to make a huge push for the West with four Big Ten road games in the middle of the season.

Going to Michigan State is hard enough, but after the week off it’s at Illinois, at Penn State, Rutgers, at Nebraska in a four-week run, and there’s still the date against the Badgers to close.

Wisconsin will rely on true freshman running back Braelon Allen against the Golden Gophers, as he will be looking to tie Jonathan Taylor’s program record of eight consecutive 100-yard rushing games. Minnesota Golden Gophers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Minnesota has become an interesting mix of offensive styles and talents under PJ Fleck and offensive coordinators Mike Sanford and Matt Simon. The running game is there to be great, the receivers have been fantastic, and the efficiency is usually fine with a strong, balanced attack. If the 2021 version isn’t going to be as strong as the 2019 O, it at least has to be more consistent than 2020.

Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields. Those were the three quarterbacks more efficient than Tanner Morgan in 2019. Not Trevor Lawrence. Not Justin Herbert. Not Kyle Trask. Morgan got dogged for not being at that level in 2020, but he was still decent in the strange seven-game season. Now he has to get his completion level back up over 60% and hit more deep throws along the way.

The receiving corps is still fantastic even with Rashod Bateman off to the Baltimore Ravens. Chris Autman-Bell isn’t exactly the next in the line of great NFL prospects under Fleck, but he’s a fantastic deep threat averaging close to 20 yards per grab last year.

Daniel Jackson is a rising playmaker, and Dylan Wright is an interesting 6-3, 215-pound option coming in from Texas A&M.

This should be the best offensive line by far of the five-year Fleck era. It’s big, it’s experienced, and it just got a whole lot bigger and more experienced with the return of 6-9, 400-pound Daniel Faalele to right tackle after he opted out last season.

The other four starters should in some form around right guard Conner Olson and with Blaise Andries playing where needed now that Faalele is back. Both earned All-Big Ten honors, and Sam Schlueter is a good one at left tackle. This group is going to bash for the fabulous backs returning.

Mohamed Ibrahim is one of the nation’s toughest backs, handling the ball over 200 yards in seven games, and now he’s back along with Cam Riley and Treyson Potts, two 200-pound backs who each averaged over six yards per carry.
