Panthers signing WR Mike Strachan to practice squad

Per his agent, WR Mike Strachan is set to be the latest addition to the Panthers’ practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have been going to work on their practice squad this week.

According to his agent David Canter of GSE Worldwide (and thanks to an assist from Mike Kaye over at The Charlotte Observer), wideout Mike Strachan will be the latest addition to the group. Once made official, alongside the reported signing of former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen, the Panthers will have brought in six new faces to their practice squad over the last three days.

Strachan, a Freeport, Bahamas native, played his college ball at the University of Charleston from 2016 to 2020. Between his 2018 and 2019 campaigns, both of which resulted in All-MEC First Team selections, he reeled in a combined 126 receptions for 2,326 yards and 27 touchdowns.

The 6-foot-5, 224-pounder was then taken by Frank Reich’s Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft. He played in 19 games for the Colts over the past two years, totaling 85 yards on five grabs.

Colts make practice squad moves

The Colts made some practice squad moves Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed three players to the practice squad and released three players from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Incoming to the practice squad are three players the Colts worked out Monday following their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here’s a look at the moves the Colts made to the practice squad Tuesday:

Signed

  • C Jack Anderson
  • RB Tyler Goodson
  • TE Jordan Murray

Released

  • RB Jason Huntley
  • WR Mike Strachan
  • TE Johnny Lumpkin

The Colts still likely need to find some depth at wide receiver and running back, especially with the latter position since Evan Hull is expected to miss time due to a knee injury.

Colts’ updated practice squad after recent moves

Here’s an updated look at the Colts’ practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts made already some recent changes to the practice squad since it was initially put together following roster cuts this week.

Here’s an updated look at the practice squad entering the final weekend before the regular season:

Colts waive WR Mike Strachan

The Colts are waiving WR Mike Strachan.

The Indianapolis Colts are waiving wide receiver Mike Strachan ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for roster cuts, first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Though Strachan had a solid showing at training camp, and the season-ending injury to Ashton Dulin opened up a roster spot, the third-year wideout appeared in just one preseason game. He recorded one reception for 18 yards but was held out of the final two games due to a groin injury.

Strachan is still a candidate to join the practice squad, but there’s also a chance he may have played his final season with the team that selected him in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to finalize their initial 53-man roster. You can stay up to date with the latest moves via our tracker.

The Indianapolis Colts are already on their way to trimming the roster down to 53 players before Tuesday’s deadline at 4:00 p.m. ET, but there are still several more moves to make.

You also can check out our final 53-man roster projection, which will coincide with this list below. In regards to the Jonathan Taylor situation, we left him off this list even with the potential of a trade taking place. With the deadline quickly approaching, here’s our prediction for the final wave of roster cuts for the Colts:

Colts’ injury updates: Shaquille Leonard expected back soon

Here are some injury updates for the Colts following the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts are through the preseason and now will be focused on cutting down the roster to 53 players ahead of the regular-season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But before we get to that, head coach Shane Steichen had some updates—and non-updates—on the status of a few Colts players who have been dealing with injuries.

Here are the latest injury updates as the Colts prepare for the start of the regular season:

8 toughest cuts from our final Colts’ 53-man roster projection

These were the toughest cuts from our Colts’ final roster projection.

The Indianapolis Colts have until Tuesday afternoon to cut the roster down to 53 players as the preseason officially comes to an end.

This is no easy task, and there will be plenty of surprises along the way. After three preseason games and joint practices with two separate teams, the Colts have to use all the information they’ve gathered to compile the best collection of 53 players moving forward.

The process, of course, doesn’t end with the initial 53-man roster, and it’s likely that changes will come immediately the day after through the waiver wire.

As we went through with our final roster projection ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, there were some difficult choices made regarding players on the roster bubble. It could be due to the fact that they played well in a crowded room or they didn’t show quite enough to be worthy of a spot.

Here’s a look at the eight toughest cuts we made in our final roster projection for the Colts:

Every NFL team’s most surprising cut candidate

These NFL players could be surprise cuts next week.

Roster cuts are just around the corner, where NFL teams will have to trim the roster from 90 to 53 players. Unlike last year, there is just one cutdown date, following the final week of the preseason, on Aug. 29.

While it’s certainly beneficial for players on the roster bubble to get more opportunity to showcase themselves — for their current or future team — it also makes for one massive wave of roster cuts that will likely feature some surprising yet prominent names.

With that in mind, our NFL Wire editors identified one player from every NFL team who could be a surprise cut on Tuesday.

Colts vs. Bears: 5 things to watch in preseason Week 2

Here are five things to watch for during the preseason matchup between the Colts and Bears.
