Jets sign Mike Remmers to 1-year deal

Mike Remmers is staying on the Jets’ 53

Offensive tackle Mike Remmers, recently promoted from the practice squad, signed a one-year deal to remain on the active roster with the Jets, per his agent, Brett Tessler.

Remmers joined the Jets’ practice squad late in September and was elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Packers, though he was deemed inactive for the game. That elevation may have just been to ensure the Jets keep Remmers and prevent another team from swiping him from the practice squad to their own active roster.

Remmers is now set on the Jets’ active roster. The Jets released Conor McDermott in a corresponding move.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates following Tuesday’s practice

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave injury updates on Lucas Niang, Orlando Brown Jr., Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Mike Remmers after Tuesday’s practice.

The Kansas City Chiefs are back at practice on Tuesday, preparing to face the Denver Broncos on a short week after having their game flexed to Saturday.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave his typical post-practice injury update to start the week, informing the media of the players who didn’t participate in practice. Just two players sat out for Kansas City on Tuesday, and both were to be expected after last week.

“Really, the only players who didn’t practice today were Lucas Niang and Clyde (Edwards-Helaire),” Reid said. “Lucas obviously has a ruptured patellar tendon, so he’s not going to play. But Clyde, he has a chance to. So he’ll keep rehabbing that and make sure that he’s got a chance to get better.”

We knew about Niang’s injury after the game on Sunday, and it’ll be season-ending. Edwards-Helaire didn’t practice at all ahead of Week 17, nor did he play during the game due to a shoulder injury, but the Chiefs won’t rule him out this early on in the week. He still has a shot to play on Saturday according to Reid.

Noticeably absent from the list of non-participants was LT Orlando Brown Jr. who dealt with a pregame calf injury that kept him out of Week 17.

“He did everything today,” Reid said of Brown. “Again, he tweaked his calf. That’s not a fun thing to tweak before the game, and he’s a tough kid who loves to play the game. If he says he’s got something, then there’s something there, but he was out there today and going. We’ll just see as we go through the week.”

That’s a good sign for Kansas City ahead of Week 18. They could roll out one of their most frequent offensive line combinations of the season with Brown in the lineup.

Reid also had an update to give on an offensive lineman who has been on injured reserve since late mid-November.

“His back is feeling a little bit better as he goes,” Reid said of Mike Remmers. “We’ll just see. He’s another one that is a real tough kid, like I mentioned with Orlando (Brown Jr.). He’s trying to get back, so if he could be out there, he’d be out there wanting to play. There are no questions on it. He’s still sensitive right now, but it’s getting better.”

That doesn’t sound too promising for a pending activation from injured reserve this week. It’s also interesting that it seems to be the back injury that continues to ail Remmers as opposed to the knee injury he was dealing with around the time of his placement on the injured reserve list. This could be a situation like Mitchell Schwartz last season with his back injury, but Reid seems to at least hold some hope that Remmers has a chance to get back out there during the postseason.

Chiefs place injured OT Mike Remmers on Reserve/COVID-19 list

#Chiefs OT Mike Remmers, who is on injured reserve with a knee injury, was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday.

Contrary to an earlier report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs did place a player on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday, it just wasn’t a player who currently counts against the 53-man roster.

As first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chiefs placed OT Mike Remmers on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Remmers was already not slated to play for the Chiefs in Week 16 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he’s currently on the team’s injured reserve list.

Remmers was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury in mid-November and the last word from Andy Reid on his status was that he was not yet ready to return to action from his injury. He becomes the third offensive linemen to head to the Reserve/COVID-19 list for Kansas City, joining starting RT Lucas Niang and veteran OL Kyle Long.

Remmers will have to isolate and won’t be allowed to rehab his injury at team facilities until he’s cleared from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. A similar situation happened with TE Jody Fortson, who tested positive for the virus o Friday, Dec. 10th and has since been activated off of the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Chiefs place RT Mike Remmers on injured reserve

The #Chiefs made one roster move on Saturday, placing RT Mike Remmers on injured reserve.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a single roster move ahead of their Week 10 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, and it’s not one that anyone expected.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice, the Chiefs have placed RT Mike Remmers on injured reserve. Remmers has started games against the Washington Football Team and Tennessee Titans this season, relieving first-year RT Lucas Niang from his original starting spot. The 32-year-old veteran lineman first showed up on the injury report as a limited participant on Friday ahead of the Chiefs’ Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants. Andy Reid has described the injury as swelling, but after two weeks they’ve decided that a stay on injured reserve is the right move.

The Chiefs made no corresponding roster moves to fill Remmers’ spot on the 53-man roster. They had no activations from any reserve list and no practice squad elevations. That’s good news for L’Jarius Sneed, who was questionable entering Week 10 with an ankle injury.

Remmers will be eligible to return from the injured reserve list after three weeks and placing him on the list today makes this week count. That means he’ll be able to be activated following the Chiefs’ Week 12 bye week ahead of their Week 13 game against the Denver Broncos.

This move likely paves the way for Kyle Long to eventually be activated from the Reserve/PUP list, but it won’t happen for Kansas City this week. Look for Long to be activated ahead of the Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Breaking down Chiefs’ options at RT with Lucas Niang, Mike Remmers injured

The #Chiefs have a lot of options to consider at the right tackle position with Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers ruled out with injury

The Kansas City Chiefs received some disappointing news on Friday, learning they’d be without their top-2 options at the right tackle position in Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers.

Niang started the first five games of the season, but he was benched after his Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills. Mike Remmers filled in for the next two games before suffering the knee injury that currently has him sidelined. Niang replaced Remmers against the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers. He suffered a rib injury in the first quarter, which has him sidelined for Week 10.

Below you’ll find a quick look at several of the options who can fill in for Niang and Remmers while they’re injured, ranging from most likely to least likely to start against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night:

Raiders, Chiefs final injury report: Both Chiefs’ starting right tackles are OUT

Raiders, Chiefs final injury report: Both Chiefs’ starting right tackles are OUT

In every game this season, either Lucas Niang or Mike Remmers has started at right tackle for the Chiefs. Both of them are officially OUT vs the Raiders Sunday Night.

Niang has started seven of the Chiefs’ nine games this season, including the last two. Remmers — who started at right tackle last season for the Chiefs — would be stepping in for him if he were healthy, but he’s not, so the Chiefs must go to a third option — Andrew Wylie.

Wylie was a starting guard for the Chiefs from 2018-20, but has yet to start a game this season. He came in for Niang in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Packers, and played 80% of the snaps.

Maxx Crosby already had plenty of motivation to retake the Raiders lead in sacks after Yannick Ngakoue took it over last week. Now Crosby will get to work against a recent backup guard to try and do it.

Four Raiders players show up on the injury report for today. None are starters. OUT are S Tyree Gillespie (hamstring) and LB Nick Kwiatkoski (ankle). Doubtful are CB Keisean Nixon (ankle) and CB Amik Robertson (hip).

Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s provides updates on injured players on Friday

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s ruled out Mike Remmers and Lucas Niang, he also didn’t sound too confident that Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Kyle Long would be activated this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs look like they’ll be shorthanded on the right side of the offensive line for “Sunday Night Football” against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Reid ruled out both Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers. Neither player practiced this week, with Niang dealing with a rib injury and Remmers dealing with swelling in his knee. Both players have earned starts at the right tackle position so far this season, but last week when Niang left with injury it was Andrew Wylie who filled in. The team could be looking at a start from Wylie this week with both Niang and Remmers ruled out.

Two players returned to practice this week for Kansas City, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire being designated to return from injured reserve and Kyle Long opening his practice window from the Reserve/PUP list. Andy Reid was encouraged by what he saw from each player, but he didn’t seem too confident that either would be activated to the 53-man roster this week.

“Yeah, no listen, he looked good,” Reid said of Edwards-Helaire. “He worked hard. It’s kind of just getting back into the flow of things. So, that’s where we’re at. He did a nice job with it.”

Asked directly whether Edwards-Helaire would be activated for Sunday, Reid left the possibility open, but also said it would be “a stretch.”

“Yeah, we’ll see,” Reid said. “He worked all week. I would tell you that it’s probably a stretch, just to throw that out there to you, but if he does don’t hold me accountable on that.”

Speaking on Long, Reid suggested he was in the same boat as Edwards-Helaire this week.

“He did kind of the same thing as Clyde (Edwards-Helaire),” Reid said of Long. “He worked in there. He rotated in with the offensive linemen. It’s just a matter of making sure he’s in good football shape. The same type of deal.”

If Long is anywhere close to ready to play, the Chiefs might not have much of a choice but to activate him given their injuries on the right side of the offensive line. The Raiders have a potent pass rush with over 80 pressures between Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue. They’ll need all the help they can get to keep Mahomes clean in the pocket.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates prior to Wednesday practice

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided injury updates ahead of practice on Wednesday, revealing a new injury to CB L’Jarius Sneed and insight into the right tackle situation.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Kansas City Chiefs will have their first practice of the week ahead of their Week 10 game on “Sunday Night Football” against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Andy Reid gave his usual pre-practice injury briefing on Wednesday, updating reporters on some new absences and injuries that the Chiefs are currently dealing with. Two of the absences on Wednesday won’t be injury-related according to Reid.

“Chris Jones and Dorian O’Daniel have been excused for the day for personal reasons,” Reid began.

Both Jones and O’Daniel are expected back at practice later this week.

As for the injuries, Reid confirmed that both Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers would be held out to start the week. Niang suffered a rib injury during the Week 9 game against the Packers and Remmers has been dealing with a knee injury for the past two weeks.

“You know about (Lucas) Niang with the ribs and (Mike) Remmers with the knee,” Reid said. ” Those two won’t practice.”

As for who might replace Niang and Remmers in practice, Reid suggested the team has some flexibility. They could even see Kyle Long get some snaps there as he returns to practice.

“We have flexibility which is good,” Reid said. “I think it’s just important right now that he gets back in the swing and move around a little bit doing football. That’s kind of where we’re at right now.”

Reid also revealed one new injury today, with CB L’Jarius Sneed nursing an ankle injury following Week 9.

“The new one would be (L’Jarius) Sneed,” Reid said. “His ankle is bothering him, so we’re going to put him down today and he’ll be back here.”

The Chiefs protected CB Dicaprio Bootle on the practice squad on Tuesday, suggesting there might be an issue with Sneed. The second-year corner, who had one of the best games of his career in Week 9, left the game briefly with an injury before returning. We’ll see if he can get back on the practice field at some point this week. Typically, players need at least a limited practice in order to play on Sunday.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates prior to Wednesday practice

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided injury updates ahead of practice on Wednesday, telling reporters that just one player would sit out of practice to start the week.

The Kansas City Chiefs will have their first practice of the week ahead of their Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers.

Andy Reid gave his usual pre-practice injury briefing on Wednesday, and this week it was brief. Reid told reporters that just one player would be absent from practice to start the week.

“As far as injuries go, the only one that won’t practice today is Mike Remmers,” Reid said. “He is better, but not ready to go quite yet.”

Remmers popped up on the injury report late last week, limited in practice due to a knee injury. He was listed as questionable heading into the game and didn’t play in the game on Monday. He was replaced by Lucas Niang, who started the first five games of the season at right tackle. Niang did admirably in Remmers’ place with just one pressure allowed on over 50 snaps on Monday night.

With Remmers as the only player out of practice on Wednesday, look for the practice participation for players like Anthony Hitchens and Khalen Saunders. Both players were ruled out for the game against the Giants on Monday. Hitchens has missed the past several games with a triceps injury. Their collective return would be a big boost for Kansas City on the defensive side of the ball.

Chiefs OG Trey Smith explains his special relationship with RT Mike Remmers

#Chiefs RG Trey Smith has played next to a new right tackle for two weeks now. He spoke about the relationship he has with Mike Remmers on Thursday. | from @TheJohnDillon

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Battered 27-3 last week against the Tennessee Titans, the Kansas City Chiefs are at a crucial juncture in their season. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes took a beating in the loss to Tennessee, getting sacked four times and entering concussion protocol after a gruesome hit late in the fourth quarter.

Their offensive line was made up of five new starters until a hamstring injury to Lucas Niang forced Andy Reid’s hand to give Mike Remmers the nod at right tackle against the Washington Football Team in Week 6. Rookie Trey Smith, now a stalwart right guard for the Chiefs in his rookie season, assessed the move to start Remmers positively, telling reporters on Thursday that he and his new battery-mate are making serious progress after two games playing side by side.

“We’re doing well,” Smith said of the relationship between him and Remmers. “Obviously, I’ve been around Mike [Remmers] a long time here so far, so ultimately, it’s just coach [Corey] Matthaei and coach [Andy] Heck, their coaching abilities and just coming out to practice every day and doing our job to the best of our abilities.”

Extrapolating on what makes the pairing on the right side work so well, Smith deferred praise to his coaches. He said a veteran presence like Remmers makes adjusting to the game very easy for him as a first-year player.

“A lot of times coach [Andy] Heck talks about reading the defense’s mail,” He explained. “Just anticipating things. A lot of times I’ll fall into the habit of playing within a box and expanding your vision on the field and seeing different things. So, it’s been great having him and a lot of veterans on the team just teaching me different nuances of the game, just understanding everything’s not going to be in front of you or here, you have to look around and anticipate things.”

Though their offensive line might not be in its final form just yet, progress is being made toward making it as stable and consistent as possible for their star quarterback. With another challenge ahead this week on “Monday Night Football”, the Smith-Remmers combination on the right side could be a winning combination that helps Kansas City secure their fourth win of the new season, clawing back to .500 after some serious struggles through seven games.
