‘I don’t think it will’: Mike Gundy doubts Bedlam rivalry will continue after Oklahoma Sooners exit for SEC

Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy said that he doesn’t think the Bedlam rivalry will continue after OU exits for the SEC.

Oklahoma and Texas made waves this summer by accepting invitations to join the Southeastern Conference.

After the 14 SEC presidents and chancellors unanimously voted to extend conference membership invitations to Oklahoma and Texas, it took just a day for the two universities to accept.

Both the Oklahoma and Texas board of regents unanimously voted to formally accept invitations to join the SEC on a Friday at the end of the month of July.

Oklahoma and Texas’ leadership have both stated publicly that the universities intend to remain in the Big 12 Conference through June 30, 2025, when the current Big 12 media rights deal expires. Still, many feel the exit for both will come long before that.

One of the repercussions for Oklahoma is what will happen with its annual Bedlam rivalry game against Oklahoma State. In the Oklahoma board of regents meeting where the Sooners formally accepted their invitation to join the SEC, OU president Joe Harroz addressed his and the university’s hope that Bedlam would continue.

“I also want to say this and I’ve communicated this to Oklahoma State and that is we want the Bedlam rivalry to continue well past the expiration of this media rights agreement. Make no mistake. We want the Bedlam rivalry to continue. And make no mistake. Even with this change, we want to play Oklahoma State in every sport, in every year,” Harroz said.

Harroz indicated that Oklahoma would have preferred for Oklahoma State to join the SEC with the Sooners, but that the landscape didn’t allow for that to be a possibility.

“The next question is why not Oklahoma State? Why did you do this and not bring in Oklahoma State University? This is a question we’ve thought about a lot dating back to 2012. That was part of our thought process and our conversation. We’ve analyzed this landscape deeply. Lots of conversations about how we do this. We looked at solutions for us to move together, but that simply is not what the market we’re pursuing allows. That was true then and it’s even more true today in this changed landscape,” Harroz said.

Oklahoma State president Dr. Kayse Shrum responded to the Oklahoma board of regents’ vote several days later on Twitter. On Aug. 1, Shrum tweeted the following statement.

“Many have asked about the future of Bedlam. We enjoy the intensity and tradition whenever we play OU in any sport. Right now, there are too many unknowns to determine what the future holds. Our athletic program is strong across the board and I have great respect for the dedication and hard work of our student-athletes in the classroom and their sports. Be assured we will move ahead with purpose, always honoring the principles we live by in the Cowboy Code and doing what is right — even when it’s hard. Go Pokes!” Shrum said.

Now, with the 2021 Bedlam game upon us, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was asked if he thought the series against Oklahoma would continue.

“I don’t think it will. I just don’t think there’s a business side of it that…I don’t make that decision. I guess Dr. Shrum and Chad Weiberg, they could do whatever they wanted or the board. I don’t know who’s involved in this. I don’t think it’s a realistic thing that it’s going to happen based on the business side of power-five conference football in the Big 12 or the SEC. That’s just my opinion on it. I mean, I could be wrong and I’m not getting that from anybody. I’m just answering the question you asked me,” Gundy said.

Gundy felt the Cowboys’ existing non-conference commitments and an expanded Big 12 with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF would mean continuing the Bedlam series is unlikely.

“So, that’s 10 power-five conference [games], so if you’re going to go back into this game, you would be willing to play 11 out of a 12-game season, which would be extremely difficult,” Gundy said.

“And, from a business standpoint, we all know this. The more success and games you win in football is a huge revenue avenue for your athletic department and your university, because the more you win in football, enrollment goes up. That’s the fact. Marketing money goes up. There’s a huge amount of money involved in that. So, you would say, if we were running a company and you’re in a business standpoint, somebody would have to make a decision. Do you want to risk some of that and how many other teams across the country that are competing to get into the final four are willing to play 11 conference games and only have one non-conference based on the amount of money that could be sitting there at the end? Whether you like it or not, I’m guessing that’s what’s going to take place.”

Gundy noted he’s not been involved in discussions with Shrum and Weiberg where either has said that Bedlam won’t continue. However it ultimately plays out, count Gundy in the camp that isn’t in love with the change.

“Well, Berry [Tramel] can tell you that I’m a traditionalist and I didn’t like any of it. I didn’t like when the Big 12 broke up whenever that was and Missouri and Nebraska headed out. And then, I didn’t like any of it. I liked it the way it was. I liked it. I thought the divisions were good. I just liked it that way, so, I mean, I’m not fired up about any of it, but, obviously, it doesn’t make a difference what I think,” Gundy said.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will renew Bedlam for perhaps the final time in Stillwater at least for the near future on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. on ABC.

Oklahoma transfer quarterback Chandler Morris wows Big 12 coaches in TCU debut

Chandler Morris led TCU’s upset win over Baylor with a big performance. Coaches around the Big 12 reacted to the Oklahoma transfer’s debut.

In his first collegiate start, TCU quarterback Chandler Morris provided a jumpstart to a program in need of some positive juice.

Morris led the way in the Horned Frogs’ 30-28 Saturday upset of Baylor. The Highland Park, Texas product completed 29-of-41 passes against the Bears and racked up 461 passing yards with a pair of touchdown passes.

As was the case at Oklahoma, Morris also demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities by rushing for 70 yards on 11 carries with a 12-yard scoring scamper sprinkled in.

Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley said during the Big 12 teleconference call that he spoke with Morris and his family after the game to congratulate them. With the Sooners on a bye week, he caught part of the action himself as well.

“I did. I got to see some of it. Yeah, he played well. It was awesome to see him play so well. I know he’s been waiting on his opportunity and got an opportunity and obviously rose to the occasion. Moved around, made some big throws. It was good,” Riley said.

“It was just really cool to see him do well. We’ve got a number of guys that have ended up in other spots and we’ve got a number of guys that are doing very well at a lot of places with obviously Chandler, AK, Mordecai. Always root for those guys. Really happy to see Chandler in such a big game with all that’s going on there and playing a really good Baylor team, I was happy to see him play very well.”

TCU interim head coach Jerry Kill marveled at Morris’ debut.

“It was one of those things with Chandler where you don’t get a chance to see something like that very often in a young man’s first start the way he played. It probably goes back to being raised by his daddy and so forth, but he carried us in the game. There’s no doubt about it. We don’t win the game without what he does,” Kill said.

Kill said he and his staff knew Baylor would be difficult to run the football against and that Morris’ legs gave his offense a different dimension to game plan around.

“We knew we were going to have to do some things different. Similar to what we tried to do at Oklahoma and got beat. We tried to mix it up as much as possible, but with his speed he can move around, too, so he was an added run guy that we needed because we only had one running back,” Kill said.

Baylor head football coach Dave Aranda saw firsthand what makes Morris difficult to defend. Morris’ ability to negate a pass rush with his feet was on display and that’s been one of the issues that’s plagued the Bears.

“I think he had a really good game, you know, similar to some of the things that has been happening against us going back to Texas State really. I think you can go throughout kind of our season so far and pull examples. We talked about some of this after last week as well. These are things that while we have improved some, clearly not enough,” Aranda said.

Next up for Morris and TCU is a trip to Oklahoma State. While he hadn’t watched the tape yet as of Monday morning, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy took notice of what Morris accomplished against Baylor.

“I’m still working on the other side of the ball. I normally don’t get to that until later in the afternoon on Monday. I saw his statistics where I think he threw for 470 and rushed for 70, so obviously they’ve found a quarterback they like that’s had a tremendous amount of success and must’ve played very, very well,” Gundy said.

Oklahoma and Riley’s impressive track record on quarterback evaluations appears like it’s continuing after Morris’ first starting performance is in the books.

Is Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley a top three coach in CFB?

Where 247Sports ranked Lincoln Riley among his peers.

Going into Year 5 of the Lincoln Riley era, the Oklahoma Sooners are looking for a big year from the offensive guru. After four seasons, he has compiled a 45-8 record.

When it comes to head coach rankings, 247Sports recently released its top 25.

What 247 Says…

The football gods shined on the Sooners following the abrupt resignation of Bob Stoops prior to the 2017 season, sending down the perfect fit for the program in Riley. Armed with senior quarterback Baker Mayfield, Riley unexpectedly directed the ship to a Big 12 title and the first of three straight trips to the College Football Playoff. He’s 45-8 as a head coach in Norman with an offense that has produced two Heisman winners, a Heisman runner-up and record-setting team marks. Last season marked the first time in four years Oklahoma did not play in a semifinal game. The NFL wants him badly, but Oklahoma is not letting that happen. Stoops averaged a jaw-dropping 10.5 wins per season from 1999-2016 and to think Riley could better that number over extended years is really impressive. He was one of five head coaches named to our lifetime contracts list ahead of the 2019 campaign.

The native of West Texas found himself among the three best head coaches in college football along with Dabo Swinney (No. 2) and Nick Saban (No. 1). The only thing those two have that Riley doesn’t is longevity at their position and a national championship. After four years at the helm, he has the Oklahoma Sooners close but can he pull it off?

The closest Big 12 coach on the ranking to Lincoln Riley would be Iowa State’s Matt Campbell at No. 8. According to this report, Campbell recently turned down a big contract to remain with the Cyclones. For now, Campbell will try and close the gap on Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners.

Other notable names on the list including the brother of Bob Stoops, Mark coming in at No. 16 with Kentucky. Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy joined the list at No. 19 and Gary Patterson of TCU ranked at No. 21. Former offensive coordinator Mike Leach finished the ranking at No. 25.

Mike Gundy believes Teven Jenkins could wind up being best OL taken in 2021 draft

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy believes the best is yet to come for Bears OT Teven Jenkins.

The Chicago Bears have been receiving rave reviews for their 2021 draft class, which starts with trading up to land quarterback Justin Fields in what could be a franchise-altering move.

After drafting Fields, the next move Chicago made was to trade up for their offensive tackle of the future in Teven Jenkins with the 39th overall pick. Which speaks volumes about how this organization views the future of this team — specifically their confidence in Jenkins to be a long-term answer at presumably left tackle.

While Jenkins had an impressive college career at Oklahoma State, Jenkins’ former college coach Mike Gundy believes his best is still yet to come and, when all is said and done, Jenkins might just wind up being the best offensive lineman taken in the 2021 NFL draft.

“I think he’s just scratching the surface on his ability,” Gundy said, via ChicagoBears.com.

“When he arrived, I don’t think he had any idea what college football was like. And just in the last year, he’s finally developed some toughness and some grit that will certainly benefit him playing in the NFL. I would not be surprised in two years if people are looking back and saying he is potentially the best offensive lineman taken in this draft.”

Jenkins possessed impressive traits when he first enrolled at Oklahoma State in 2016. But Gundy said that Jenkins has transformed over the last season and a half into the guy the Bears drafted.

“He has phenomenal athleticism, strength, he’s highly intelligent, and he’s just started to really get into football over the last 18 months,” Gundy said.

“Now I know that sounds funny, but when you’re as gifted and talented as he is, you can get by being a good college football player without having that grit and toughness like he’s developed over the last 18 months. So he really brought that to our program just recently.”

Oklahoma State players hilariously struggled to give Mike Gundy his Cheez-It bath after bowl win

Nothing like running around carrying a Gatorade jug filled with Cheez-Its after a game.

No. 21 Oklahoma State jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead over No. 18 Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl and never relinquished it, winning 37-34 Tuesday night.

Cowboys sophomore quarterback Spencer Sanders led the way, throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP. Unfortunately on the other side, Miami quarterback D’Eriq King — who just announced his plans to stay with the team another year and play a sixth college football season — left the game in the first half with a right knee injury. The Hurricanes outscored Oklahoma State in the second half, but Miami was able to hold on for the victory.

But when it was time for the Cowboys to celebrate in traditional Cheez-It Bowl fashion, they encountered a little hiccup: They couldn’t find coach Mike Gundy.

Junior safety Tre Sterling and freshman wide receiver Brennan Presley — who led Oklahoma State with six catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns — hilariously ran and wandered around the field, while carrying a Gatorade jug of Cheez-Its, after the game in search of Gundy.

When they finally found him, he was finishing his post-game handshake with Miami coach Manny Diaz. And then showered him with Cheez-Its.

And — unlike last week when Nevada received a penalty for its french fry bath in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl — the Cheez-It bath happened after the game so there was no chance of another celebration penalty for food on the field.

Just some snacks this time.

Texas head coach Tom Herman named to midseason Dodd Trophy watch list

After recently being named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant coach of the year award, Texas’ Tom Herman finds himself another watch list.

The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl has released their midseason watch list for the top head coaches in college football. Before the season the Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman was among the coaches listed on the initial preseason list. He was also present on the midseason watch list.

The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity– the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy.

Herman was one of 19 coaches to make the midseason list. The Longhorns have at least three games left this year and it could be as many as five. That would include their bowl game and a potential Big 12 Championship.

Big 12 Coaches listed

Coach School Record AP Ranking
Tom Herman Texas 5-2 22
Matt Campbell Iowa State 5-2 17
Mike Gundy Oklahoma State 5-1 14
Lincoln Riley Oklahoma 5-2 18

It should come as no surprise to see the four coaches vying for a shot at the Big 12 Championship all be on the list.

“The Dodd Trophy is unique from other coach of the year awards considering it looks beyond just wins and losses on the football field,” said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & president. “Each of these coaches have had successful seasons to date, but what sets them apart is how they’ve empowered their players in the classroom and impacted their communities in a positive way. All of these coaches on the watch list are strong contenders for this year’s Dodd Trophy and we look forward to seeing who emerges as finalists this last month of the season.”

Brian Kelly Makes Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List

Brian Kelly is on a mission to prove that the 2020 iteration of Notre Dame football is the best under his watch.

Brian Kelly is on a mission to prove that the 2020 iteration of Notre Dame football is the best under his watch. Those on the outside looking in can see that, and the results have made Kelly one of 19 coaches to make this year’s Bobby Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List. There is no higher honor for a college football coach. With an 8-0 record, No. 2 ranking and Academic Progress Rating of 970, the Irish have made Kelly worthy of this list.

Some of college football’s most prominent coaches join Kelly on this year’s list. They include Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney, Jimbo Fisher, Paul Chryst, Gus Malzahn, Lincoln Riley, Mike Gundy and Pat Fitzgerald. With that type of company, there’s still a long way to go before Kelly can prove he’s the one who should take this year’s award. This would be the second time in three years he’s won it, and he would join Joe Paterno and Bill Snyder as the only two-time winners of the trophy since it first was awarded in 1976.

What Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said about Oklahoma, Spencer Rattler

What Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had to say about Oklahoma in his weekly press conference on Monday ahead of Bedlam on Saturday.

Bedlam week has arrived as this weekend will feature one of the top rivalries in the Big 12 when No. 14 Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1) visits No. 17/18 Oklahoma (5-2, 4-2).

This game is obviously huge in regards to the Big 12 title picture down the stretch of the season. It’s importance was even large enough to warrant ESPN’s College Gameday making the trip to Norman this weekend.

The Sooners are one of the hottest teams in the country right now coming off of four-straight wins including blowout showings against Texas Tech and Kansas each of the last two weeks prior to last Saturday’s bye.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, picked up a hugely important bounce back victory over Kansas State in their last action after they were upset at home by Texas to break up their undefeated season bid.

Today, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy spoke to the media at his weekly press conference to discuss his team ahead of the big matchup on Saturday. Here is what the Pokes head man had to say about Oklahoma.

Texas Longhorns vs Oklahoma State Cowboys: Final BetMGM odds before kickoff

Tom Herman has the biggest game of his tenure at Texas, facing off against No. 6 Oklahoma State. Here are the updated BetMGM odds.

Tom Herman has the biggest game of his tenure at Texas, traveling to Stillwater to face off against No. 6 Oklahoma State. After starting 2-2 this season, the Longhorns were able to get back on track with a win against Baylor last week.

On the field performances have no been the only problem, as recruiting for Herman has started to fall apart. Crucial 2021 and 2022 blue-chip prospects have decided to decommit from Texas and head to schools such as Oklahoma and Ohio State.

[lawrence-related id=25798]

To make up for it, the Longhorns must get a win against the Cowboys. Over the past decade, Oklahoma State has been able to take advantage of Texas, winning seven of the last 10 matchups. This will be the fourth time Mike Gundy’s squad will face an unranked Texas team in the same time period.

Oklahoma State remains the favorite in the game per BetMGM and has gained half a point. After being favored by three points earlier in the week, the Cowboys are up to 3.5 points. Even the over-under line has gone up a full point.
