Michigan State basketball goes on the road, dominates Ohio State, 62-41

Michigan State went on the road and dominated Ohio State on Sunday afternoon:

Michigan State flexed its muscle on the defensive end of the court, showing why they are ranked so highly on that end of the court. The Spartans held the Buckeyes to just 41 points on their home floor en route to a 21-point quad one win road victory.

After a slow start from both teams, the Spartans held a 14-11 lead with 7:21 remaining in the first half. This is when MSU would break the game open, ending the half on a 13-3 run to gain a 27-14 halftime lead.

Ohio State, who trailed by 16, made their push to get back into the game, cutting the Spartans lead to just 5, 38-33, with 11:25 left in the game.

The Spartans would put a screeching halt to any Ohio State comeback ideas.

Michigan State countered the comeback effort, going on a 21-4 run over the next 9 minutes to eclipse a 20-point lead, a margin they would take to the finish, winning 62-41.

Joey Hauser (22 points) and Tyson Walker (10 points) were the Spartans only scorers in double figures. Jaden Akins also had a strong performance, scoring 8 points and grabbing 9 rebounds.

Michigan State will be back in action on Wednesday for a home matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7 pm EST at the Breslin Center.

Michigan State vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

What the hell has happened to Ohio State?

Every time it seems like it’s about to do something impressive, it loses to Maryland and lowly Nebraska.

It’s not necessarily a flaky team, but it’s not hitting from three – it failed to get to 30% from outside against Maryland and Nebraska – and overall it hasn’t been able to come up with any consistency overall lately.

Michigan State hasn’t exactly been sharp, but it’s okay from three, strong defensively at coming up with blocked shots, and …

Why Ohio State Will Win

What the hell has happened to Michigan State?

This looked like a possible player back in mid-January, and then it lost eight of its last 13 games thanks to a massive power outage.

The defense isn’t forcing mistakes for easy points, there are way too many turnovers, and getting to 70 points has been a grind.

The Spartans haven’t put up more than 70 in seven of the last nine games, they can’t seem to buy a free throw – they’re struggling to hit half of them – and they’re not coming up with enough rebounds.

Ohio State might be cold lately, but that’s an aberration – it’s one of the better shooting teams in the Big Ten, and …

What’s Going To Happen

After losing two of the last three games at home – and going to overtime in the one win –  Ohio State could really use a little momentum.

Michigan State could really use a little anything.

The Buckeyes might not be playing well, but the Spartans have been a whole lot worse. Ohio State will hit its free throws and do well on the boards – that will be enough.

Michigan State vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

It the Ohio State defense good enough?

It’s been sort of ignored over the last several weeks after the rough start, but the Buckeye D hasn’t exactly been tested since dealing with Minnesota and Oregon to start the season. Purdue was the first decent attack it faced after the  first few weeks, and it agave up 477 yards and 31 points.

Granted, almost all of that came when the game was effectively over, but Michigan State might be able to do what it did to Michigan.

Ohio State is going to get its yards and points, but the Spartans have to keep on pushing through. That starts with Kenneth Walker, who might not have to run for five touchdowns like he did against the Wolverines, but again, this is the first good rushing attack OSU has played since Oregon.

On the other side, Michigan State has the pass rush to bother CJ Stroud and keep him uncomfortable, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Ohio State offense really is that good.

No, the defense hasn’t played anyone all that great since September 11th, but the offense had to deal with Penn State and Purdue, and it ripped through both of them.

No. 1 in the nation in yards and scoring, Ohio State got the running game going again with a brilliant day against the Boilermakers, the NFL-caliber receiving corps is lighting it up, and Stroud has settled in.

Michigan State might be playing well, but the defense has been awful. It’s got the nation’s worst pass defense – allowing over 1,300 yards over the last three games – and things aren’t about to get any better this week.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Give it a half.

Ohio State will come out hot, but it won’t deliver the knockout punch. Walker will get going, the Michigan State offense will move, and it’ll be a close, tight battle going into the fourth quarter. And then Ohio State will go Ohio State.

Two big pass plays will finally open it up and the Spartans won’t quite be able to keep up. Ohio State will put up 500 yards, Walker will run for 150 and two scores, and it’ll be a true survive-and-advance battle.
