See where MSU lands in CBS Sports’ latest bowl projections released on Sunday

Michigan State football’s backs are against the wall when it comes to reaching the postseason, but that doesn’t mean Jerry Palm is ruling out a bowl game for the Spartans.

Palm released his updated bowl projections on Sunday, and Michigan State was once again in the mix and staying close to home. Palm has the Spartans landing in the Detroit Bowl and facing Miami (OH) of the Mid-American Conference. This was the same projection Palm had for the Spartans the last few weeks.

The Spartans are 4-6 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten play. Michigan State has dropped its last three games and will need to win its final two games to reach bowl eligibility.

Michigan State will return to action this week against Purdue. Kickoff time is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Friday and the game will be televised on Fox.

Top in-state target commits to Georgia, more options available to MSU football

Georgia has taken one of the top prospects out of Michigan in 2026, but options still remain for MSU:

One of the biggest and best prospects in the state of Michigan’s 2026 class is now off the board. Saline (MI) tight end Lincoln Keyes has made the decision to make his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs. Both Michigan State and rival Michigan will miss out on the top prospect.

For Michigan State, they will target 1-2 tight ends in the 2026 recruiting class, with multiple tight ends being the more likely scenario.

While Keyes is now off the board, there are still a plethora of targets for MSU to target in the state in 2026. Detroit Catholic Central’s Jack Janda will lead the list for the Spartans, who will go head to head with their rival Wolverines (who hold the crystal ball lead) for the local talent. Second on the list will be Lincoln Watkins of Port Huron Northern High School. He holds 15 power conference offers despite not holding an MSU offer, which should be coming soon. Other than the big two left on the list, prospects like Charlie Jilek (Portage Central), Ryan Rocheleau (Lake Orion) and Maximus Jansenvanvuren (Waterford Mott).

Now or never, MSU football has to step up to end 2024

MSU still has one imperative goal within reach in 2024, and the team needs to step up and make it happen

It is at the point of the season to have a tough conversation. Bowl eligibility is on the brink of collapsing for Michigan State football, which will be detrimental to Jonathan Smith’s build in East Lansing.

While making a bowl in today’s college football doesn’t feel like a big deal, for what Smith is selling, it is imperative for the Spartans in 2024.

For Smith, and selling his program to recruits in high school and the transfer portal, a bowl game appearance will favor the Spartans far more than a 5-7 or 4-8 campaign in year one.

The bright side for MSU, they get to play at home against Purdue and Rutgers, two beatable teams. While MSU has to get healthy, Smith has to get his team ready to reach the biggest goal of the 2024 fall.

It’s now or never, and it starts on Friday against Purdue.

It is time for the youth movement with Michigan State football

It is time to bench two veterans for more youthful players to round out MSU’s season

Michigan State football went on the road and dropped a pivotal game against Illinois on Saturday afternoon, 38-16, in a game that played a touch closer than the score.

Another tough loss for the Spartans in Jonathan Smith’s first year, this one in particular showed that there is a ton of things the Spartans need to fix and clean up.

For starters, there are two to three key positions that NEED to see changes.

Ashton Lepo at the right tackle position is a liability. While the offensive line unit as a whole has not been productive, Lepo has been abysmal. Graded consistently as the worst on the Spartans offensive line by PFF, Lepo has an awful 43.8 pass block rating by PFF.

Who replaces Lepo?

True freshman Rakeem Johnson has shown the ability to be an effective offensive lineman at this level, and quite frankly, it cannot get worse than Lepo – making it time to give Johnson a serious shot at the tackle spot to build for next year.

Jonathan Smith updates two injured MSU defensive backs

Jonathan Smith gives an update on Charles Brantley and Malik Spencer

Michigan State football was missing Charles Brantley and Malik Spencer against Illinois on Saturday afternoon, and their absences were more than noted.

The lack of depth, paired with the injuries, have shown a glaring weakness for the Spartans in their secondary.

After the loss to Illinois, MSU head coach Jonathan smith updated the status on the two key defensive backs, sharing that they are not close to returning and that they are doubtful to return over the final two games.

MSU is going to have to find a way to be effective defensively in the secondary while missing these two key pieces.

Michigan State football picks up a pair of 2026 crystal balls

MSU received a pair of crystal balls for in state prospects in the 2026 recruiting class

New Michigan State football head coach Jonathan Smith has made it a priority to recruit the state of Michigan, something the last regime neglected.

The efforts of Smith appear to be paying off, landing seven Michigan prospects in 2025 (so far) and now has the Spartans trending for a pair of in-state prospects in 2026.

QB Kayd Coffman of East Kentwood High School, by way of Grand Rapids, received a crystal ball to be the Spartans QB in the 2026 class. Further, Eli Bickel, an offensive lineman from North Branch received the other crystal ball in favor of MSU.

Both pieces would be solid building blocks for MSU to build on to start 2026.
