Michigan State football hosts Louisiana safety Jah’von Grigsby on virtual visit

Mel Tucker and his staff are getting creative on the recruiting trail during the COVID-19 pandemic

Mel Tucker and his Michigan State football staff have been getting creative while recruiting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The staff hosted three-star safety prospect Jah’von Grigsby on a virtual visit this weekend.

Grigsby is not listed in the 247Sports composite rankings–a fact that I’d venture to be guessed will change soon–but is a three-star prospect and boasts a pretty impressive short list of offers that is growing quickly. The Baton Rouge product has power five offers from Auburn, Miami, Purdue, and Vanderbilt. Grigsby is ranked by 247 as the 23rd-best player in talent-rich Louisiana.

Michigan State is hosting 4-star QB Kaidon Salter, one of the top dual-threat prospects in the country, on a virtual visit this Sunday.

Three Michigan State commits rise in latest 247Sports ratings

Michigan State respects see their stocks improve in the latest re-rank.

The latest 247Sports re-rank was quite kind to Michigan State prospects.

Three of MSU’s four recruits, Davion Primm, Ethan Boyd, and Derrick Harmon, saw their stock rise in the recruiting site’s mid-April re-rank. Primm, a three-star running back from Oak Park, was the biggest riser, jumping 21 spots in the state of Michigan rankings and going from an 83 rating to an 86 rating. He jumped from No. 95 at running back all the way up to No. 52 at the position.

Also rising was Michigan State’s latest commit, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon out of Detroit Loyola. The three-star prospect went from an 83 to an 84 and went from the 44th-best player in Michigan up to the 34th-ranked player. He’s the 59th-best DT prospect in the country.

MSU’s other recruit from Michigan also rose in the rankings. Offensive tackle Ethan Boyd jumped eight spots in the state of Michigan, going from 29th to 21st. The 6-foot-7 East Lansing product is now ranked as the No. 57 offensive tackle in the country, up from No. 105. His rating jumped from an 84 to an 86.

MSU’s fourth commitment, three-star defensive back Gabe Nealy out of Miami, was stagnant in the re-rank. Nealy is a three-star prospect with an 85 rating.

Detroit Loyola defensive tackle Derrick Harmon commits to Michigan State

Harmon is Michigan State’s fourth commitment in just over one week.

#21BuiltStrong keeps on rolling.

Mel Tucker and Michigan State added Detroit Loyola defensive tackle Derrick Harmon to their 2021 recruiting class today.

A three-star prospect, Harmon chose Michigan State over three other finalists: Ole Miss, Purdue, and Memphis. The 6-foot-3 320-pound projected nose tackle is considered a late riser in the recruiting process. He is currently a three-star recruit, rated as the 59th-best defensive tackle in the country by the 247Sports composite ranking. His ranking jumped from an 83 to an 84 in the latest 247Sports re-ranks.

Harmon is the fourth high school recruit to commit to Tucker and MSU in the last eight days. Oak Park’s Davion Primm got the ball rolling on April 7. He was followed by East Lansing lineman Ethan Boyd and defensive back Gabe Nealy out of Miami, FL.

Michigan State is also the favorite to land Warren Mott defensive end Tyson Watson. Watson is scheduled to announce his commitment on April 17.

Michigan State offers 2022 4-star DT, author of viral recruiting tweet

Curtis Neal is the latest top prospect offered by Mel Tucker

I officially have a favorite prospect for Michigan State football in the 2022 class.

Michigan State on Monday offered Curtis Neal, a 4-star defensive tackle in the class 2022 out of Cornelius, North Carolina. Neal is rated by 247 as the 12th-best DT in the 20222 class.

That’s all well and good, but I’m more interested in something else. If that name or Twitter picture looks familiar, you’re not wrong. About a month ago Neal had a recruiting tweet that was quite popular when he posted his “Top 5” and instead of schools it was restaurants.

This is the exact mindset I want out of  a 6’1 305 lb. defensive tackle. It even looks like Neal is making the “feed me” celebration gesture in that edit. That’s good stuff from Neal. He currently has offers from just about every school in the country and given that he is just a sophomore, there’s still a long ways to go in his recruiting.

Brantley stands at 6’0″ and weighs 160 pounds. Per 247 Sports Composite Rankings, he is the 40th-ranked CB in the nation. Furthermore, he ranks as the No. 74 prospect in all of Florida. Brantley would certainly be an exceptional addition to Michigan State’s group of Cornerbacks.

Michigan State lands commitment of three-star left tackle Ethan Boyd

Boyd is Mel Tucker’s second commitment in as many days.

#21BuiltStrong is catching on.

Mel Tucker and Michigan State have landed their second recruit in as many days with East Lansing offensive tackle Ethan Boyd committing to MSU.

Boyd is listed at 6’7 and 285 pounds. He is a three-star prospect, rated 800th overall in the class of 2021 per the 247 Sports composite rankings. Boyd chose MSU over power five offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, Indiana, and Vanderbilt.

Boyd is the second member of Tucker’s inaugural class, joining three-star running back Davion Primm out of Oak Park.

#21BuiltStrong is the hashtag Michigan State coaches are using to classify their 2021 recruiting class. Coaches and support staff members will seemingly tweet out a GIF with the hashtag when a player has committed to the program.
