Michigan State Basketball loses to Maryland 67-60: Game Recap

Michigan State Basketball lost to Maryland at the Breslin Center, 67-60, in heartbreaking fashion. Read a complete game recap here.

Michigan State Basketball lost to Maryland, 67-60, in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Maryland led for large portions of this game but MSU gained a lead late in the game. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not sustain this lead nor stop Terpins Guard Anthony Cowan Jr.

Here is a quick recap of this game:

Michigan State scored twice early on and then forced a Maryland turnover on the other end. Then, the Spartans missed their next five shots from the floor. Anthony Cowan Jr. scored all of the Terpin’s first 8 points for an 8-5 lead over Maryland with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Both teams pushed the pace, using very little of their respective shot clocks. Aaron Henry stole the ball and was fouled coming down on a fastbreak. Henry hit one free-throw, cutting the Maryland lead down to 13-10. Xavier Tillman was on fire early on with 10 points and four rebounds in the first ten minutes. MSU trailed Maryland 20-14 halfway through the first half.

Michigan State looked out of sorts down the stretch of the first half. Meanwhile, Maryland got everything and anything on the offensive end. MSU went on a 7-0 to close the half, cutting the deficit to double-digits. The Terpins led the Spartans at halftime, 39-31.

MSU forced a Maryland turnover right out of the halftime break. On the next play, Aaron Henry threw down a mean dunk and Cassius Winston scored on a tough layup. Then, the Spartans forced a shot clock violation on defense. Terpins led the Spartans 41-35 with 16 minutes left in the game.

Rocket Watts came back in and immediately hit a tough mid-range jumper. On the next play, Watts hit a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to one point. Note, Maryland led by as much as 15 points earlier in this game.

Michigan State and Maryland traded buckets for the next five minutes. Kyle Ahrens tied the game with a three-pointer. Finally, Cassius Winston gave MSU the lead with a pull-up three in transition. Xavier Tillman added to this lead with two free-throws. MSU now in front 56-53 with five minutes remaining.

Michigan State pushed the lead even further with buckets on three-consecutive possessions. Then, Anthony Cowan Jr. scored ten straight points, giving Maryland a five-point lead. The Terpins closed this game out with two Anthony Cowan Jr. free-throws for a 67-60 victory at the Breslin Center.

Former MSU Basketball star Miles Bridges wins NBA Rising Stars MVP Award

Former MSU Basketball star and current Charlotte Hornets wing Miles Bridges won the NBA Rising Stars MVP tonight with 20 points, 5 rebounds.

In a game that featured big names like Luka Doncic, Zion Williamson, and Ja Morant, it was former MSU Basketball star and current Charlotte Hornets breakout young wing Miles Bridges who won the NBA Rising Stars MVP Award tonight. The Rising Stars game is played each All-Star Weekend and features the best young players the league has to offer.

Bridges had 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5  assists on the night, but it might have been his insane dunk off the glass that made him stand out.from the other players.

Jaren Jackson Jr. was also present in the lineup and finished with 12 points and 7 assists.

Team USA was able to beat Team World in what is a largely fun and non-competitive exhibition, but it was still awesome to see two former Spartans showing off on a big stage. Both players were on the court with the best young players in the league and they both stood out as stars. This was a great night for Spartan basketball to watch two of the best NBA prospects the team has produced shine.

WATCH: Miles Bridges’ crazy off the glass self alley-oop dunk in NBA Rising Stars Game

Former Michigan State star Miles Bridges had an absolutely insane self alley-oop off the glass tonight in the Rising Stars game.

Michigan State Basketball has two former star players currently playing in the NBA Rising Stars Game. Jaren Jackson Jr., now of the Memphis Grizzlies was there with his teammate Ja Morant (and Brandon Clarke, who was on Team World). Miles Bridges was the second Spartan in attendance he was joined by his fellow Charlotte Hornets teammates PJ Washington and Devonte Graham. Miles Bridges might have had the highlight of the night with a crazy self alley-oop, off the glass to himself.

You can watch the clip in all of its glory below:

And here is one more angle for good measure:

On top of the crazy dunk, Bridges had a very nice night, particularly in the third quarter. He ended up with 20 points, good for second on Team USA. Jackson, to his credit, had 12 points on the night.

Based on the way both guys have been playing, they might be in the All-Star game someday instead of just the Rising Stars game.

Former MSU Basketball PG Kalin Lucas signs with Serbian Basketball team

Michigan State alumnus Kalin Lucas will be heading to Serbia to play for KK Crvena zvezda of Belgrade.

[jwplayer nOXymNLq]

When he was at Michigan State, Kalin Lucas was electrifying and still remembered as one of the best point guards in school history. Injuries both during and after college hampered his career path, but he has continued to stay relevant in professional basketball. After briefly appearing in the NBA last season, Lucas will now be heading to Serbia, where he has reportedly signed with KK Crvena zvezda.

The news was first reported by Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. The club is based out of Belgrade, Serbia.

Last year, Lucas had plenty of achievements in the States, grinding his way to the Detroit Pistons playoff roster after spending the season torching the G League for the Grand Rapids Drive.

Kalin Lucas will join a number of former MSU Basketball stars who have found homes overseas, from Matt McQuaid to Kenny Goins, the Spartans have a large presence on the international basketball scene.

3 Things To Watch: Michigan State Basketball vs. Maryland

Michigan State Basketball faces off against Maryland tomorrow in a nationally televised game. Here are 3 things to watch in this game.

Michigan State Basketball welcomes Maryland to the Breslin Center tomorrow at 6 P.M. for a nationally televised game. The Spartans are fresh off of a close victory over Illinois on the road, 70-69. Maryland, on the other hand, just beat Nebraska 72-70.

Here are three things to watch in this game:

1. Maryland On A Hot Streak

Maryland just won their seventh straight Big Ten game against Nebraska at home. This win streak includes victories over Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers, and Illinois. Simply put, Maryland is a top player in the Big Ten conference. MSU now faces off against a team riding high in the Terpins. Watch for the Spartans to play incredibly aggressive in an attempt to end this winning streak.

2. Anthony Cowan Jr.

Boy oh boy, Anthony Cowan Jr. can score in bunches. He averages 16.3 points per game but can easily rise above this average. As a matter of fact, Cowan has scored 99 points in just the past five games. This includes an impressive 31-point performance against Iowa on Jan. 30. Watch MSU’s defensive strategy against this elite Big Ten Guard.

3. Michigan State Turnovers

Michigan State beat Illinois despite turning the ball over 16 times. The Spartans are fourth in turnovers per game with 12.68 TOPG. This is a consistent recipe for disaster even against lesser Big Ten teams let alone a powerhouse like Maryland. MSU must trim down the turnovers during this final stretch of the season. Watch for more discipline from this group.

The Spartans play the Terpins at 6 P.M. tomorrow live on ESPN. Tune-in and stay with SpartansWire for more coverage of this game and all MSU basketball news.

2022 No. 1 basketball recruit Emoni Bates visiting Michigan State for Maryland game

The No. 1 recruit of 2022 will be in town this weekend to watch Michigan State take on Maryland.

[jwplayer nOXymNLq]

This has been an exciting week for Michigan State fans. On the same night where MSU Basketball knocked off Illinois in a one-point road win, the football team got their man in head coach Mel Tucker. With Spartan fans possibly more excited than ever for the future, there is one more glimmer of hope on the horizon, and that comes in the form of Emoni Bates. Bates is the top player in the 2022 recruiting class and according to Adam Zagoria of ZAGSBLOG he will be in East Lansing this weekend for the Spartans big game against Maryland.

There is a ton of intrigue around Bates, who has been compared to great players like Kevin Durant. As of right now, MSU looks like the clear favorite to recruit Bates if he isn’t able to jump straight to the NBA. If he does come to East Lansing, he will absolutely be a one-and-done player, but this is still a huge deal.

College GameDay will be in town for the big game between MSU vs. Maryland as well.

USA TODAY Bracketology has MSU Basketball as a 4-seed in 2020 NCAA Tournament

Michigan State is still projected to be a top-16 team in the NCAA Tournament by USA TODAY’s Bracketology experts.

[jwplayer nOXymNLq]

We are basically halfway through February so you know what that means: it’s almost March baby! That’s right. We are almost in the biggest month of the year in college basketball and now is the time for Bracketology fans and experts to have their moment in the spotlight. In USA TODAY’s latest Bracketology forecasting, they have projected MSU Basketball as a 4-seed for the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State was on a recent three-game losing streak, their longest streak since 2007, before knocking off Illinois on the road in Champaign this week. Michigan State is 17-8 on the season but will have a tough test this Saturday as they host Maryland, who is currently the ninth-ranked team in the country in the Coaches Poll.

Michigan State Basketball defeats Illinois: 3 Key Takeaways

Michigan State Basketball won a close game against Illinois 70-69. Here are three key takeaways from this Spartan victory.

[protected-iframe id=”bff90d5d34dcd5e05e91760fe12d7adc-142349028-168611744″ info=”//content.jwplatform.com/players/ofLF0moh-er0jUifI.html” width=”640″ height=”360″ frameborder=”0″]

Michigan State Basketball won a barn burner last night against Illinois, 70-69. The Spartans enjoyed a victory thanks to key contributions from Xavier Tillman and Rocket Watts. Now, MSU is 17-8 overall and 9-5 in Big Ten Conference games.

Here are three key takeaways from this game:

1. Slow Road Starts, Be Gone!

As you know, Michigan State struggles early on in road games. This did not stand true against Illinois. Instead, the Spartans jumped out to a huge lead in the first ten minutes of this game. They were clicking on all cylinders and this high level of play was truly impressive. Hopefully, this strong performance kick starts MSU’s offense moving forward.

2. Rocket Watts Cleared For Takeoff

Rocket Watts went absolutely bananas last night against Illinois. He scored a career-high 21 points on 9/14 shooting from the floor and 2/4 from three-point land. Most importantly, Watts his shots in critical moments during this game. He hit one floater right over a defender in the second half. Now, Watts looks incredibly confident in his on-court abilities. Let’s see what he does throughout the rest of this season!

3. Still Room For Growth

Michigan State did shake their early-game struggles but there is still plenty of room for growth. After all, Illinois climbed right back into this game during the second half. MSU must be more consistent on the defensive end of the floor, especially on the perimeter. Also, Michigan State must shoot get to the free-throw line more often. Illinois took 11 more free-throws than the Spartans.

The Spartans are back in action this Saturday on Feb. 15 against Maryland. The game starts at 6 P.M. and broadcasts live on ESPN. Follow along on SpartansWire for plenty of coverage to come.
