Michigan hockey posted back-to-back 3-0 shutouts against rival Michigan State over the weekend at Yost Ice Arena in the Big Ten Tournament, and one familiar face was on hand on Saturday to take in the action.

Dylan Larkin, a Michigan native, was only in Ann Arbor for one season, in 2014-15 before he got drafted by his hometown Detroit Red Wings, where he’s now in his fifth-season and is an alternate captain. But with the Wings having a day off on Saturday before they host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena, Larkin found time to head back to his old stomping grounds to take in his alma mater beating its arch rival in the tournament.

And he celebrated in epic fashion as the game concluded, not just staying put in his seat, but joining the fanatical Children of Yost student section to celebrate the big win.

Through 69 games in 2019-20, Larkin has 18 goals and 32 assists for an accumulated 50 points for the Detroit Red Wings.

Ohio State men’s hockey takes down Michigan for series split

The Ohio State men’s hockey team beat Michigan Saturday night to split the series and move back into a tie for 1st place in the Big Ten.

It was a heartbreaker Friday night for the Ohio State men’s hockey team. But Saturday was different, as the Buckeyes took care of business against Arch Rival Michigan 4-1 up in Ann Arbor.

OSU meant business early on, getting ahead by two goals in the first period to put the pressure on the Wolverines. Matt Miller broke the seal just :43 seconds into the game to get things cranking. Jaedon Leslie scored his first goal as a Buckeye when he added a second tally with 10:17 left in the period.

Michigan would try to claw back when it put one in the back of the net halfway through the second period, but that would be all the Wolverines could muster.

Austin Pooley put OSU up by two goals in the 3rd period when he converted off a 2-1 odd-man rush with 8:21 left in the game. Then, Quinn Preston added an empty netter with under one-minute left, and that’s how things would end, with the Buckeyes notching a much needed 4-1 victory.

The win moved OSU back into a tie for first place after Notre Dame helped by taking down Penn State. Michigan State is just one-point behind though and has two games in hand.

Two big series now loom over the next two weekends. The Buckeyes take on Penn State at home next Friday and Saturday, then head to East Lansing for two against Michigan State. Those will go a long way in determining the Big Ten regular-season champion.

Ohio State men’s hockey drops first of two against Michigan

The Ohio State men’s hockey team dropped a heart-breaker against Michigan in game one of two for the weekend.

All of a sudden, there are some cracks appearing in the armor of the Ohio State men’s hockey team. It was less than two weeks ago that the Buckeyes took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. But after a three-game losing steak, OSU now finds itself going in the wrong direction.

The latest was a brutal 3-2 loss at the hands of arch-rival Michigan in Ann Arbor Friday night. It was one that OSU gave up the lead with under four minutes in the game and couldn’t pull off an equalizer.

The Wolverines started the scoring in the 1st period when a rebound caromed out and was put back into the back of the net with 14:36 left in the period. And that’s the way the first twenty minutes would end.

The Buckeyes pulled even in the 2nd period when Caron Meyer’s attempted pass went off a Wolverines player and unexpectedly into the back of the net during a power play. Michigan got the lead back though on a 4 on 4 situation with under two minutes left in the period to head into the second break up 2-1.

Ohio State would again pull even during a power play in the 3rd period to tie it at two goals apiece when Grant Gabriele lit the lamp. However, it wouldn’t be enough because the Wolverines got the game-winning tally with just 3:43 left in the game.

The Buckeyes now desperately need a split when it has game two against Michigan Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:30 PM.
