Former Trojan Michael Trigg is no longer with Ole Miss football team

The USC “Rebels” — Lane Kiffin, Jaxson Dart, and Michael Trigg — are all struggling in Oxford this season. The Ole Miss offense is stuck.

Junior tight end Michael Trigg is no longer with the Ole Miss football team. Ole Miss confirmed the news with the Daily Journal Tuesday afternoon. Trigg, who transferred from USC in January of 2022, is no longer listed on the team’s roster.

Trigg joined the Rebels as a highly-touted member of a 2022 transfer portal class that was highlighted by him, USC teammate Jaxson Dart, and former TCU running back Zachary Evans.

Trigg appeared in 10 games over the course of two seasons with the Rebels, catching 21 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns while missing time due to injury. The Ole Miss offense simply hasn’t been able to thrive with Dart and Trigg and a number of other transfers. Lane Kiffin has struggled to unlock his offense’s potential in both 2022 and 2023.

Trigg was the No. 130 overall prospect in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports composite, and has tons of potential. However, leaving the program in the middle of the season isn’t the best look to be sure.

Trigg has a ton of talent, so it’ll be interesting to see where he lands in 2024 and beyond with two years of eligibility left.

As for Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin, the Rebels (3-1, 0-1 SEC) next take the field against LSU (3-1, 2-0) on Saturday (6 p.m. Eastern time, ESPN).

USC win over ASU felt like a loss in many ways.

Rival News: Ole Miss tight end out for season, won’t play against Auburn

He had three touchdowns on the year prior to the injury, but he won’t be playing against Auburn.

It seems as if the Tigers will have one less threat to worry about when they play the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi on Saturday.

On3 Sports tweeted on Monday that Rebels tight end Michael Trigg, a sophomore out of Tampa, Florida, will unfortunately be out for the rest of the year after suffering a broken collarbone in Ole Miss’ game against Vanderbilt last Saturday. Trigg had one catch for 28 yards in the game before he was taken out due to injury.

Trigg’s best effort this year came in Ole Miss’ opener against Central Arkansas. In that game, he caught five passes for 28 yards, with three of those being touchdowns. He’s been productive in other games, though, including a three-catch, 41-yard performance against Kentucky that resulted in a top-ten win for the Rebels.

Despite Trigg’s absence, it’ll still be an uphill battle for Auburn to take a win at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium come game day. Ole Miss is currently undefeated and is the No. 9 team in the nation, so the Tigers are going to have to pull out all the stops if it wants to upset the Rebels at home — and, likely, if coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] wants to keep his job.

Sam LaPorta ranked No. 8 in On3’s Impact 300 top 10 tight ends for 2022

Iowa Hawkeyes tight end Sam LaPorta is once again garnering national acclaim. LaPorta was listed as the No. 8 tight end for 2022 by On3.

Sam LaPorta finds him in the mix as one of the nation’s top tight ends on another preseason list. This time, it’s On3’s Impact 300 top 10 returning tight ends.

The 6-foot-4, 249 pound senior tight end is back in Iowa City after authoring the type of season that Hawkeye fans have become accustomed to at the position. As a result, LaPorta checks in as the No. 8 returning tight end according to On3.

LaPorta had a breakout year as a junior last season, hauling in a career-high 53 passes for the Hawkeyes. He also posted career-highs in yards (670) and touchdowns (3). The Highland (Ill.) native’s junior campaign put him over the 1,000-yard receiving yard mark for his career. LaPorta checks in with an On3 NIL Valuation of $155,000. – On3.

One of the interesting numbers is that final one. As one of the biggest returning stars for the Hawkeyes, a healthy NIL deal from one of the local companies wouldn’t come as any sort of a shock for LaPorta. Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz recently said to expect more news on the NIL front for the Hawkeyes in the coming weeks and month.

As On3 noted, LaPorta is back with Iowa after a career season. He led the Hawkeyes in receiving yards and receptions last season and will be counted upon to deliver every bit of that type of production and more in 2022. The Highland, Ill., native is regarded by multiple outlets as a 2023 NFL draft riser to watch.

Both Athlon Sports and Pro Football Focus have praised LaPorta this offseason. Athlon Sports listed LaPorta as one of its top 10 Big Ten 2023 NFL draft prospects, while PFF’s Michael Renner ranked LaPorta as his No. 5 tight end and the No. 90 overall prospect entering this upcoming college football season.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. actually had the highest preseason draft grade for LaPorta. The longtime draft expert rates LaPorta as the No. 2 tight end on his most recent 2023 NFL draft big board.

Both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele listed LaPorta as a preseason first-team All-Big Ten selection. LaPorta leads a group that also includes redshirt sophomore Luke Lachey and Lafayette transfer Steven Stilianos as the Hawkeyes’ primary tight ends.

The rest of On3’s Impact 300 top 10 returning tight ends list looked like this: Georgia’s Brock Bowers No. 1, Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer No. 2, South Carolina’s Jaheim Bell No. 3, Georgia’s Arik Gilbert No. 4, Texas’ Jahleel Billingsley No. 5, Georgia’s Darnell Washington No. 6, Stanford’s Ben Yurosek No. 7, Louisville’s Marshon Ford No. 9 and Ole Miss’ Michael Trigg No. 10.

Oklahoma Transfer QB target Jaxson Dart headed to Ole Miss

After putting their best foot forward, the Sooners come up short as former USC QB Jaxson Dart commits to Ole Miss.

The Sooners look like they will be striking out don’t their second transfer quarterback coup of the offseason after multiple sources report that former USC quarterback Jaxson Dart is transferring to Ole Miss and will be playing under Lane Kiffin.

Dart visited Oklahoma shortly after he entered the transfer portal upon leaving USC. The Sooners did all they could to land the talented freshman QB. With Dillon Gabriel already committed and Gabriel’s relationship with Sooners’ OC Jeff Lebby, it makes more sense for Dart to  head to Ole Miss. There, he’ll compete against fellow freshman Luke Altmyer as opposed to joining a race with a veteran QB who’s had years in the system he’s trying to learn.

USC transfer TE Michael Trigg, Dart’s former roommate, is also transferring to Ole Miss. Both were considered a package deal wherever they landed.

His decision is far from shocking. If Dart were to lose a QB battle to Gabriel, he would then have to have another competition next year against Nick Evers and new 2023 QB commit Jackson Arnold assuming Gabriel left for the NFL Draft after 2022.

It also clears the picture for Oklahoma this winter and spring as they get ready for an offseason where they will be installing a new defense and a new offense. Gabriel is the clear-cut number one guy and the battle for the backup begins.

Without Dart’s commitment, the Sooners need another quarterback sometime after the spring as they head into the summer.

Only one quarterback on the roster has taken meaningful snaps in college and it’s Gabriel. That just won’t cut it. Look for the Sooners to hit the portal whether it’s now or after spring practice to try and land another signal-caller (likely with experience) to join the room as they get ready for their first summer under Brent Venables.

Barring anything crazy happening this likely concludes Oklahoma’s frenzied shopping spree of the portal until after spring ball. Players across the country will likely re-evaluate where they stand in their current college programs before heading home for the summer.

Pro Football Focus ranks Marvin Mims as the No. 8 returning wide receiver in college football

Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims was ranked as college football’s No. 8 returning wide receiver by Pro Football Focus.

In some ways, it seems like ages ago when Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims addressed his future with OU. Two days before Oklahoma’s bowl game versus the Ducks, Mims indicated that he planned on returning to Oklahoma, but that an official decision hadn’t been made yet.

“I definitely want to be here. I haven’t made that much of a decision yet, but I still want to be here. I’m pretty sure that everyone playing in this bowl game still wants to be here, too. There have been some departures to go to other schools and stuff like that, but me being here, I definitely want to be in the crimson and cream next season,” Mims said on Dec. 27.

Mims was his typical explosive self against Oregon. The Frisco, Texas, native hauled in a 55-yard touchdown grab to put OU in front 23-3 and the Sooners would go on to top the Ducks 47-32.

Obviously, much has changed since then. True freshman quarterback Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal and OU has brought in UCF transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel. The Sooners also hosted USC transfer quarterback Jaxson Dart and USC transfer tight end Michael Trigg on recent visits, though that pair is yet to make a decision on their future.

All of this meant Mims’ future could still be up in the air.

Oklahoma’s first workouts with Jerry Schmidt, the Sooners’ new director of sports enhancement and strength and conditioning, began this week and Mims was in attendance.

That indicates Mims is here to stay at Oklahoma. It’s huge news for Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby as he looks to tailor his first offense in Norman around Mims’ talents.

Pro Football Focus ranked Mims as college football’s No. 8 returning wide receiver. Here’s what Pro Football Focus had to say about Mims.

Mims has yet to be a full-time starter, but his skill set and level of production as a true freshman and sophomore were too good to ignore. He owns an 86.5 receiving grade, 19.1 yards per catch, 3.14 yards per route run and a 143.8 passer rating when targeted since 2020.

Over that span, Mims has turned 34.4% of his targets into a gain of 15 or more yards, the third-highest rate in the Power Five. He should be a vital piece to Jeff Lebby’s offense in 2022. – Pro Football Focus.

Over the course of his OU career, Mims has caught 69 passes for 1,315 receiving yards. Mims was Oklahoma’s leading receiver each of the past two seasons and he finished the 2021 season with 705 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound wide receiver was named an All-Big 12 honorable mention choice by the league’s head coaches for his work this past season.

During the 2020 season, Mims tied the Big 12 true freshman record and set the OU freshman record with nine touchdown receptions. He earned freshman All-America honors from The Athletic and ESPN and was selected second-team All-Big 12 by the Big 12’s head coaches and media.

According to Pro Football Focus, Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy checked in as college football’s No. 4 returning wide receiver, former OU wide receiver Mario Williams is No. 6 and TCU’s Quentin Johnston is No. 9.

USC transfer target TE Michael Trigg shares video alongside QB Jaxson Dart from Oklahoma visit

Tight end Michael Trigg and quarterback Jaxson Dart, a pair of USC transfer targets, were in Norman yesterday for a visit.

Oklahoma hosted USC transfer targets tight end Michael Trigg and quarterback Jaxson Dart on Friday. The duo is reportedly set to visit Ole Miss over the weekend and make a final decision on what’s next for their respective futures.

Trigg excited the OU fan base on Saturday morning when he shared video of himself alongside Dart donning the crimson and cream during the visit.

Dart is the No. 3 player available in 247Sports’ transfer portal player rankings. Trigg isn’t listed in 247Sports’ transfer portal player rankings, but both were consensus four-star prospects coming out of high school.

Dart was the nation’s No. 45 player and No. 7 quarterback in the On3 consensus rankings for the 2021 recruiting class. 247Sports‘ composite placed Dart as the No. 69 player overall and No. 10 quarterback in the 2021 class.

Meanwhile, Trigg was ranked as the country’s fourth-best tight end and No. 154 player nationally by the On3 consensus. 247Sports‘ composite also rated Trigg as the nation’s No. 4 tight end in the 2021 class, but he was ranked a little higher overall as the No. 130 player nationally.

Dart saw action in six games for USC this past season. As a true freshman, the Kaysville, Utah, native completed 117-of-189 passes for 1,353 passing yards with nine passing touchdowns against five interceptions. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback also started each of the Trojans’ final three games of 2021.

Trigg caught seven passes for 109 yards with USC. His best games of the 2021 season came against Oregon State and Colorado. Against the Beavers, Trigg hauled in three grabs for 44 yards.

Then, against the Buffaloes, Trigg showcased his potential with a 46-yard touchdown reception.

If the Sooners win this recruiting battle, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby would be adding a highly sought-after quarterback, Dart, to battle UCF transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

OU would also bolster a tight end group that saw the return of Brayden Willis, added Missouri transfer Daniel Parker Jr. and signed Kaden Helms and Jason Llewellyn in its 2022 class.

The Sooners join two other teams in pursuit of Jaxson Dart; What does each offer?

Oklahoma is currently in a significant transfer portal recruiting battle with the Ole Miss Rebels and TCU Horned Frogs for QB Jaxson Dart.

Oklahoma and USC have been intertwined so much in the last two or three months you may have thought they were the fiercest of rivals. The reality is that one singular man’s decision married the programs in a way that neither probably wanted.

Lincoln Riley’s departure from Oklahoma had college landscape changing effects. Outside of the out of nowhere coaching search the Sooners undertook, the most significant ripple has been the departures each team has seen since that fateful day in November. The Sooners and Trojans’ have experienced so much player personnel coming and going that it is enough to make the calmest individual anxious and confused.

The biggest domino in this: Sooners QB Caleb Williams entered the portal and it led to Dillon Gabriel coming to Oklahoma to reunite with his former UCF coordinator in Jeff Lebby. Williams and his family were seemingly in LA visiting both UCLA and USC. Visits by Caleb and Mario Williams(also entered the transfer portal) led to folks closest to the program that there is significant reason to believe both could end up there.

On the USC side, things weren’t smooth sailing as former four-star QB Jaxson Dart, who performed admirably in the absence of Kedon Slovis with 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns against five interceptions while completing 61.9% of his throws, also entered the transfer portal.

Dart’s entry into the portal only gained traction as reports of Caleb Williams and USC uniting became a well-discussed topic amongst major college football media. As it stands both are the number one and two overall player available in 247’s transfer portal player rankings.

Oklahoma has shown Dart interest and Dart has an interest in them. According to a report from ESPN, Dart is also looking at Ole Miss and TCU

With that in mind and assuming Dart picks from one of those three let’s take a look at what each school has that could appeal most to Dart.

TCU Horned Frogs

The Horned Frogs may not be the sexy option that Oklahoma is but there’s a real reason to believe that Dart could go there, compete and be a successful quarterback. Why? The head coach has done it before with another transfer and at another school already.

Sonny Dykes has developed names like Jared Goff into the NFL and he also can boast that he helped Shane Buechele and Tanner Mordecai revitalize their careers at SMU. He knows and gets quarterbacks. That’s an undeniable fact.

He also stated that the TCU job is up for grabs this offseason. While Zack Evans transferred to Ole Miss, the Horned Frogs have a talented playmaker out wide in junior Quentin Johnston and incoming freshman Jordan Hudson as weapons for Dart. One would imagine TCU isn’t the betting favorite but they present some real opportunity.

Ole Miss Rebels

In Mississippi, Lane Kiffin waits and hopes he can do whatever he can to get Jaxson Dart on campus. Dart would immediately be the guy at Ole Miss as likely first-rounder Matt Corral is headed to the NFL Draft and John Rhys Plumlee to the transfer portal.

Currently, the only quarterback the Rebels have with any meaningful game action is like Altymer, who saw time in the Rebels Sugar Bowl loss to Baylor.

The aforementioned Zach Evans from TCU transferred to Ole Miss and it’s very plausible that Ole Miss brings in Michael Trigg, another USC transfer and supposedly a very close friend of Dart’s for a visit as well.

With Kiffin’s offensive acumen, recent film of Matt Corral success, and the path of least resistance to a starting quarterback job, the Rebels look firmly entrenched in this race.

Oklahoma Sooners

Last but certainly not least, the Oklahoma Sooners are the third team that figures to be a major factor in the race for Jaxson Dart.

Oklahoma probably has the most to offer but also probably poses Dart with the biggest obstacles to immediate playing time. However, that doesn’t seem to matter as Dart signed to play at USC despite Slovis’ presence and Miller Moss also signed. Competition doesn’t look like it scares him and if not, joining Oklahoma would be a great move.

He’d compete with Dillon Gabriel all spring and summer and assuming Gabriel won out due to familiarity and comfort in Lebby’s offensive system, Dart would be the number two guy. He would only be a play away from seeing the field and we know that he’s comfortable coming off the bench and producing. Assuming Gabriel makes it through the season with a clean bill of health, he’d then go into 2023 with four-star commit Nick Evers as his only real competition.

Lebby’s track record of developing and getting the best out of his quarterbacks speaks for itself and Oklahoma’s offensive weapons with Marvin Mims, Eric Gray, Brayden Willis, Jalil Farooq, Theo Wease, and the incoming freshmen plus the possibilities of his friend and former Trojan Michael Trigg being able to play here have to seem doubly exciting.

All told, this is a fascinating situation that has a very interesting conclusion one way or another. Does Dart presumably switch places with Caleb Williams and head for the Palace on the Prairie? Does he go to Ole Miss and try and forge something with Lane Kiffin? Or does he join the Big 12 and head to Fort Worth to do battle with Max Duggan and Chandler Morris to see who Sonny Dykes’ QB to start his tenure at TCU?

Either way, whatever happens, we’ll keep you updated here on Sooners Wire.

Oklahoma Sooners show interest in USC transfer TE Michael Trigg

The Sooners continue to attack the transfer portal to retool their squad, this time showing interest in USC transfer TE Michael Trigg.

The Oklahoma Sooners have not been shy about retooling their roster in the early stages of the 2022 offseason. While they’ve lost some players to the transfer portal, they’ve worked to add some as well.

At the tight end spot, the Sooners lost Austin Stogner to South Carolina through the portal and Jeremiah Hall declared for the NFL draft. Though those were significant losses, the Sooners brought in tight end Daniel Parker as a transfer from Missouri. Then they received even better news when Brayden Willis elected to stick around for one more year.

As it seems with every position, the Brent Venables’ Sooners are looking to add as much talent as possible. Per Clint Brewster of 247Sports, the Oklahoma Sooners have shown interest in recent transfer portal entrant, tight end Michael Trigg.

Trigg was considered a four-star tight end in the class of 2021 and committed to play for the USC Trojans. Now he’s on the move, and the Sooners might be the team that could reap the rewards of the athletic tight end.

Trigg played in four games for the Trojans and missed time due to a knee injury that didn’t require surgery. In the four games he played, Trigg caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Here’s what 247Sports’ Barton Simmons had to say about Trigg as a recruit.

Extremely productive pass catcher against shoddy competition. Natural hands catcher. Good body control and ball skills. Easy athlete that can be dangerous after the catch and has played quarterback in a run-heavy role. Isn’t asked to play in-line but has shown some willingness to block in H-back roles and is active on defense. High end basketball player. – Simmons, 247Sports

Although Oklahoma wasn’t in on Trigg during his recruitment process, Joe Jon Finley was part of Ole Miss’ recruitment of Trigg. That could create an open door for the Sooners to make a play for the former USC Trojans tight end.

Former LSU target Michael Trigg has entered the transfer portal

One USC transfer that LSU and Brian Kelly need to make a run at.

One area of emphasis for the LSU Tigers in 2022 needs to be improving their tight end position. The team has Kole Taylor and Jack Bech, although the latter is more of a big slot and less of an inline tight end. The team could look to the transfer portal where a former LSU offer has put his name in the hat.

USC tight end Michael Trigg announced on Twitter that he is in the transfer portal and the Tigers could use his services. Trigg held offers from both the LSU Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was part of the 2021 recruiting class as the No. 4 ranked tight end. Some view Trigg as a big slot player as well but his usage would likely increase in a Mike Denbrock offense.

As a member of the 2021 Trojans football team, Trigg accumulated just seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. His longest reception went for 46 yards, which came in the game against Colorado. The same game where Trigg hauled in his first collegiate touchdown.

Trigg is at least worth kicking the tires on for LSU. One thing that is very noticeable about a Brian Kelly-coached team is they utilize the tight end position quite a bit. It is time they start bringing in some big-time receivers at tight end.

LSU TE target lists Top 3 schools

LSU made the cut, as did South Carolina and USC.

LSU football had quite the run in 2019, recording an undefeated season and capping it all off with a national championship victory over a historically dominant Clemson team.

Now, in 2020, the Tigers look to defend their title after suffering the loss of 14 players to the draft and several coaches and assistants taking new opportunities after the title game win.

Part of the team’s future success is going to come down to strength at tight end, which Class of 2021 prospect Michael Trigg could factor into.

On Thursday, Trigg, out of Tampa, Florida cut his list of 49 programs down to just three.

[lawrence-related id=9798]

LSU made the cut, as did South Carolina and USC.

Trigg has received offers in both basketball and football, so it will be interesting to see which sport he ultimately chooses to go with as he prepares to begin his college athletics career — or if he decides to play in both.

Trigg knows what he brings to the table for a school like LSU.

“I’ve always had good hands but I’ve been working a lot on my speed this offseason and I also want to get stronger,” Trigg said. “Training for basketball helps with your wind because you’re running up and down the court without stopping. So they really complement each other.”
