Browns: Michael Hall Jr. ‘happy to rep’ Cleveland in first NFL game

The rookie felt all the emotions on Saturday

The first preseason game of the year is now in the books for the Cleveland Browns as they lost to the Green Bay Packers 23-10 on Saturday. Michael Hall Jr., who is from Cleveland, took the field for the first time in his hometown and talked about it after the game.

Hall talked about how it was everything to him and how he had to get his emotions down and do his thing on the field. It wasn’t a super productive game for Hall, who finished with just one tackle, but getting his first professional snaps under his belt will help him settle into his rookie year.

The former Ohio State star will play a role with the Browns as a rookie and has shown flashes of his ridiculous explosiveness and athleticism in camp so far. Next, the Browns will have joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings this week before facing them in their second preseason game next weekend.

Browns: Kevin Stefanski comments on two injured Buckeyes

The pair should return to practice shortly

The Cleveland Browns held their first padded practice of the year on Monday, their fourth training camp practice overall. Cleveland was without two of their talented young lineman, with right tackle Dawand Jones and rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. absent from practice.

After practice, head coach Kevin Stefanski discussed the pair, saying they would be back “shortly” and that their injuries were not serious. Earlier in the day, the team placed veteran center Brian Allen on injured reserve, so it is important to avoid another injury on the offensive line this early.

Jones is the only offensive tackle practicing out of their top three. Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin are still sidelined with their knee injuries, which ended their seasons early in 2023.

Hall, the Browns’ second-round pick this year, has turned some heads in practice with his rare athleticism at his size. Cleveland will be back on the practice field on Tuesday as they continue to prepare for the 2024 season.

How rookie DI Michael Hall Jr. could perfect the Browns’ defensive line

Rookie DI Michael Hall Jr. has the traits to fill in one crucial position in the Browns’ impressive defensive line.

We have learned over the last few seasons in the NFL that interior pressure against the quarterback is perhaps more important than it’s ever been before. As offenses are throwing more out of quick game concepts — one- and three-step drop passes and RPOs — there are times when, no matter how great the edge defender may be, he simply doesn’t have time to affect the quarterback with his array of moves. So, the closer you are in a straight line to the quarterback, the better chance you have of actually creating problems for that enemy offense.

Last season, Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants was by far the league’s best true interior pass-rusher. Per Sports Info Solutions, Lawrence totaled five sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 14 quarterback hurries from the 0-tech (head over the center) and 1-tech (to either shoulder of the center) positions. Jarran Reed of the Seattle Seahawks, Kobie Turner of the Los Angeles Rams, Bryan Bresee of the New Orleans Saints, and Michael Pearce of the Baltimore Ravens also had stellar seasons when asked to create pressure right up the middle.

For the Browns last season, as effective as their defensive fronts were, that up-the-middle pressure was a bit tougher to come by. Dalvin Tomlinson led the team with two quarterback hits and five quarterback hurries in those 0-tech and 1-tech roles; no other Browns defender had more than two total pressures.

Enter Ohio State’s Michael Hall Jr., the 6′ 2¾”, 290-pound defensive tackle selected by the Browns with the 54th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 draft. Last season for the Buckeyes, Hall had two sacks, five quarterback hits, and 22 quarterback hurries in 228 pass-rushing snaps, which is a pretty good pressure rate for a guy who spent 65% of his snaps inside the guards. More importantly for the Browns’ purposes, Hall had one sack, four quarterback hits, and 17 quarterback hurries aligned at either 0- or 1-tech. And he could get those sacks and pressures with technique and raw strength.

“Yeah, pass rush is a premium no matter what,” Browns Director of Player Personnel Dan Saganey said of Hall after Cleveland had secured the player. “I mean, we see the guys that hit the market this year even signed extensions recently at the D tackle position. It’s a highly paid, highly coveted position. And taking a guy like Mike, very good quickness, twitch power, and has really the ideal skill set for what we’re looking for out of a 3-technique, when you see guys like that, they kind of jump off the tape. In college, a lot of college teams play odd fronts or play three guys where it’s, you have more DBs than linebackers on the field. But a guy like Mike really was identified pretty early here as a guy that’s a perfect scheme fit for us and fits what we do. And again, it is something that we’re always looking to add wherever we can.”

It’s interesting that Saganey identified Hall as an ideal 3-tech. He has the traits to disrupt from outside the guards, but based on his college tape, I might err on moving him inside — especially on third down — and letting him hunt. That’s where Hall could fill in one blank on an otherwise dominant defensive line.

Browns Podcast: Analyzing the film of new defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr.

What kind of player is Cleveland getting?

The 2024 NFL draft for the Cleveland Browns was more about the future than this year, though a couple of players will have roles this season. Second round pick Michael Hall Jr. will get playing time with his ability to rush the passer from the interior.

You can never have enough quality pass rushers, especially from the interior, to help the fantastic pass rushers they have on the outside. Hall didn’t play a ton of snaps at Ohio State but his tape shows a player who’s ceiling is high.

There are some reps where he is so explosive and quick off the line of scrimmage that sometimes opposing offensive linemen can’t even get a hand on him. Hall is a great athlete, and his upside could turn him into one of the premier pass-rushing 3-techs in the NFL if he reaches his full potential.

Two of Browns’ 2024 NFL draft selections highlighted as top picks

Can these two make a big impact on the field?

With the 2024 NFL draft in the rearview, the Cleveland Browns are receiving praise for their haul. Two Browns selections were named in an article by ESPN’s Matt Miller about his top 100 fits, picks and sleepers from the draft.

The Browns’ selection of South Dakota cornerback Myles Harden checked in as the No. 66-ranked pick. Harden was 167th on Miller’s board, and the Browns got Harden at No. 227.

Here is what Miller had to say:

Smart teams take fliers late in the draft on high-end potential, and that’s what Harden brings out of South Dakota. The 5-foot-11 cornerback likely fell in the draft after a 4.5-second time in the 40-yard dash, but his instincts and timing in coverage are eye-opening. He’s a sleeper worth watching as a future third or fourth corner.

The Browns’ second pick to make an appearance on Miller’s list was their first pick: Ohio State defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. Miller ranked the Browns’ 54th overall pick as his 80th-favorite pick of the weekend:

The Browns needed to land an impact 3-technique early in the draft, and without a first-round selection, Hall was a smart choice on Day 2. A first-step maven with the quickness to shoot past interior blockers, he will slot into the defensive line’s starting four very quickly.

As the Browns look to stay competitive and get younger at the same time, they will rely on both Hall and Harden to make an impact.

New defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. will wear 51 with the Browns

Hall will stick with his college number with the Browns

Second-round pick and former Ohio State defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. was in Cleveland after being selected with the 54th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft on Friday night. While in town Hall, he was told no single digits were available and decided to stick with his college number 51 for his rookie year.

Hall has a ton of upside, and when you turn on the tape, you see the flashes that made Andrew Berry and the Browns select him. He is so explosive off the line of scrimmage that sometimes it seems like he knows the snap count and offensive linemen can’t get a hand on him to block him.

Hall and the rest of the rookies will play for the first time as Browns next weekend, May 10-12, during rookie minicamp. It will be interesting to see if Hall changes numbers later if a single digit becomes available, as he requested at first once roster cuts begin on route to trimming down to 53.

Michael Hall Jr.: ‘Greatest feeling ever’ being drafted by hometown Browns

Hall is happy to stay in Ohio

The Cleveland Browns made their excellent pass rush even better on Friday night when they took defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. with the 54th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Hall is a local product who went to Ohio State and said after getting picked that going to the Browns is the “greatest feeling ever in the world.”

The fans will love having a local product that loves the city of Cleveland on the roster from now on. Hall has a chance to flourish with the Browns, learning from veterans Shelby Harris and Dalvin Tomlinson. On top of that, Myles Garrett and company will draw most of the attention, and Hall will get many one-on-one chances to shine and show his talent.

Getting Zak Zinter following up on the Michael Hall pick was a great way to start the draft for the Browns. It is always good when someone loves coming to Cleveland and is local like Hall.

CB Denzel Ward praises new Browns’ teammate Michael Hall Jr. from Ohio State

The star corner believes Hall is a good addition

Andrew Berry and the Cleveland Browns kicked off their 2024 NFL draft class, selecting in-state product Michael Hall Jr. from Ohio State with the 54th overall pick. Leading up to the draft, former Ohio State corner and Browns star Denzel Ward sang the defensive tackle’s praises and said he hoped Cleveland would pick Hall.

“I hope so, that’s a good player..he’d be a good addition to the team.”

The pick surprised some, including myself, because of the talent they already have in a crowded defensive tackle room. But Ward is spot on. Hall is a very good player and a great addition to a great defensive line.

The team already has a great pass rush, and Hall’s explosiveness and athleticism will make it even better in 2024. The camp battle at defensive tackle and on the defensive line, in general, will be fascinating to watch as the team eventually settles on a 53-man roster.

Browns: Michael Hall Jr. aces quiz from Jim Schwartz on his 2024 NFL draft call

Michael Hall is already winning gold stars

One of the best moments every year is the calls these players get from teams as they come off the board, and the 2024 NFL draft call between the Cleveland Browns and Michael Hall Jr. did not disappoint.

Part of his call that the Browns were taking him off of the board included a quiz from defensive coordinator. And it was a quiz that Hall aced with general manager Andrew Berry, head coach Kevin Stefanski, and more listening humorously.

The Browns, and particularly Hall, will never turn down explosive and lethal pass rushers. Hall Jr. fits the bill for the Browns in that regard as he was one of the top-graded pass rushers in the entire nation a year ago.

Hall Jr. will now get the chance to learn behind veterans like Dalvin Tomlinson, Shelby Harris, Quinton Jefferson, and Maurice Hurst the Akron native heads just a little further north.

Watch and enjoy the call between the Browns and Hall here.

With the No. 54 selection in the 2024 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Michael Hall Jr., a defensive tackle from Ohio State.

Cleveland has been on a great run of drafting former Buckeyes. It drafted Dawand Jones and Luke Wypler last season and signed Ronnie Hickman as an undrafted free agent. That streak continued with the addition of Hall in the second round this year.

Hall was the second former Ohio State standout off the board. Marvin Harrison Jr. was selected in the first round at No. 4 to the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night. With Day 2 featuring both the second and the third rounds, there will likely be more Buckeyes off the board.

Hall is the seventh interior defensive lineman taken, which was about where most draft experts had him slotted. No one doubts Hall’s athleticism, but his lack of ideal size likely kept him out of the first-round discussion.
