Jaguars 2023 roster review: DL Michael Dogbe

Former Cardinals defensive lineman Michael Dogbe is hunting for a roster spot with the Jaguars.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is underway. Join us for a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

Michael Dogbe never quite found a consistent spot in the Arizona Cardinals defense.

The former Temple lineman was a seventh-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and saw limited snaps in his first two seasons before becoming a rotational player in 2021 and 2022, although he never played 300 snaps in a season.

In the offseason, he signed a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his chances of playing more with his new team aren’t strong either.

With several players ahead of him on the depth chart, Dogbe is fighting for a roster spot and will have to prove he’s more valuable than the likes of Tyler Lacy, Jeremiah Ledbetter, and De’Shaan Dixon.

Contract (2023): $1,080,000 base salary, $940,000 cap hit.

Acquired: The Jaguars signed Dogbe as a veteran free agent on March 27, 2023.

Report: Jaguars adding DE Michael Dogbe on 1-year deal

The Jaguars finally added a free agent, but it isn’t a big name addition.

It took a week, but the Jacksonville Jaguars finally dipped their toes into the free agency market. According to Jordan Schulz of The Score, the Jaguars agreed to a one-year deal with free agent defensive lineman Michael Dogbe.

Dogbe, a 6’3, 295-pound defensive end, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals after he was picked by the team in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

After rarely seeing the field in his first two seasons, Dogbe became a more regular contributor for the Cardinals in the last two years. In 2022, Dogbe was on the field for 282 defensive snaps and 28 tackles and one tackle for a loss.

In Jacksonville, Dogbe likely represents a depth addition who can rotate in for starters Roy Robertson-Harris and Folorunso Fatukasi. While the team brought back Adam Gotsis on a two-year deal over the weekend, the Jaguars have little depth along the defensive line.

Contract details haven’t been revealed, but it’s a presumably cheap deal that likely won’t have much impact on the Jaguars’ chances at receiving compensatory draft selections in 2024.

Cardinals re-sign DL Michael Dogbe to practice squad, make other moves

The Cardinal bring back DL Michael Dogbe, TE Chris Pierce and signed OL Julien Davenport.

Defensive lineman Michael Dogbe is not done with the Arizona Cardinals. Released on Friday to make room for safety Charles Washington to come off injured reserve, the Cardinals brought him back by signing him to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Dogbe had appeared in the team’s first nine games of the season, starting twice.

The Cardinals also added a pair of practice squad players on Wednesday.

They announced the signing of offensive lineman Julien Davenport and and tight end Chris Pierce.

The signing of offensive lineman Rashaad Coward to the active roster freed one practice squad spot to allow for one of the additions. The Cardinals released linebacker Blake Lynch and offensive lineman Sage Doxtater to make room for the other two.

Pierce is an undrafted rookie who was with the team in the offseason and preseason.

Davenport was a fourth-round pick in 2017 by the Houston Texans out of Bucknell. He played two seasons for the Texans, two with the Miami Dolphins and last season with the Indianapolis Colts. He was with eth Chicago Bears in the offseason and preseason before being released.

He has played in 60 NFL games, starting 32 of them.

DL Michael Dogbe released

The fourth-year defensive lineman could potentially play this Sunday if signed to the practice squad Friday and elevated Saturday.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a singular roster move on Thursday. They released fourth-year defensive lineman Michael Dogbe.

Dogbe was a seventh-round pick in 2019 out of Temple and gradually increased his role. He bounced between the roster and the practice squad in 2019 and 2020 but played in 16 games last season and all nine games so far this season.

He has had 13 total tackles this season.

The move did not come with other corresponding moves. Safety Charles Washington is expected to be activated from injured reserve this week, so the Cardinals were going to need to release somebody.

It is possible they made this move on Thursday so Dogbe could potentially clear waivers and be signed to the practice squad Friday, thus being eligible to be elevated to the active roster this weekend.

We will know tomorrow or Saturday whether this was a bit of roster manipulation or if they have decided to move on from Dogbe.

Cardinals Flight Plan suggests team has high hopes for 3 defenders

With Chandler Jones leaving in free agency, it appears the Cardinals expect increased production from Dennis Gardeck, Zach Allen and Michael Dogbe.

The Arizona Cardinals will have to adjust on defense in 2022 with the departure of franchise all-time sack leader Chandler Jones. They have not yet replaced him in the lineup.

In the most recent episode of Cardinals Flight Plan, general manager Steve Keim spoke of Jones’ departure. He spoke of how teams love to have Pro Bowl players, “but at the same time, there are guys that are really good fits that do things day in and day out here that sort of lead us to success.”

He suggests that there will be players to step in and give the Cardinals what they need to replace Jones.

The video cut to three players while Keim was saying that, suggesting that are players they have at least some hopes will be key contributors in 2022.

Who are they?

DL Michael Dogbe re-signs with Cardinals on one-year contract

The former seventh-round pick comes back for another season after having his best year in the NFL.

The Arizona Cardinals have retained another player set to become a free agent on Wednesday. The team announced Monday afternoon the re-signing of defensive lineman Michael Dogbe.

Dogbe was scheduled to be a restricted free agent but the Cardinals likely were not going to tender him a qualifying offer.

He comes back to the team that drafted him.

He was selected in the seventh round of the 2019 draft out of Temple.

He made the roster in 2021 after bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster in 2020 and became a rotational player the team likes.

He appeared in 16 games last season, starting once, and had 27 tackles, a sack, two quarterback hits and a fumble recovery.

He rejoins a defensive line unit that includes J.J. Watt, Zach Allen, Jordan Phillips (who could be released as a cap casualty), Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence.

4 Cardinals who are surprises on the 53-man roster

These players who made the final roster initially might not be able to get too comfortable with other roster moves sure to come.

The Arizona Cardinals made final cuts to get to the requisite 53 players on the roster on Tuesday. They actually left the roster at 52 with two players also on the COVID list.

A few players initially have made the team who are surprises.

They can’t get too excited because there are still transactions to be made. Offensive lineman Justin Pugh and cornerback Robert Alford are sure to come off the COVID reserve soon. When both return, one player will have to be cut as of now.

There could also be waiver claims, trades and free agent signings after players have cleared waivers.

Who are the players who are at least mild surprises for the roster?
