Patriots select elite, athletic linebacker in first round of The Athletic mock draft

The Patriots select a linebacker with their first pick in a recent mock draft,

Could an impact linebacker be added to the New England Patriots? In a recent mock draft, that could be the case. Dane Brugler of The Athletic did a mock draft on Thursday, and in it, the Patriots drafted a talented linebacker.

Brugler had the Patriots landing Micah Parsons with the 15th overall pick. Parsons is widely considered the best defensive prospect in the draft, and he would instantly add a spark to the New England Patriots linebacking group. The linebackers could certainly use a boost, as several key veterans, most notably Don’t’a Hightower, are not getting any younger.

Parsons recorded 109 tackles in the 2019 season. He elected to up out of the 2020 season in order to prepare for the NFL Draft.

With the Patriots needing a playmaker at linebacker, Parsons could certainly be a good fit. The Patriots certainly have a lot of avenues to go down as they look to fill several holes on the roster.

Todd McShay lands elite defensive prospect with Patriots in latest mock draft

It isn’t quarterback, but the Patriots need some serious help here.

All eyes will be on the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Tom Brady’s coming off a Super Bowl win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Bill Belichick had a subpar 7-9 season without his former quarterback. Cam Newton’s future with the team is uncertain, but speculation around the league leads to a future without the 31-year-old. The Patriots draft No. 15 overall, giving them perfect position to potentially stumble into rookie quarterbacks like Justin Fields or Mac Jones.

It’s not that simple though. The Patriots aren’t just a quarterback away from being a winning team — they have holes in nearly every position on the field. So, it’d be smart to take the best player available and figure out the quarterback situation through a trade or signing a veteran who can handle the offense.

That’s why ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Patriots landing Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons with the No. 15 overall pick.

“No, one of the top five quarterbacks isn’t available, but this isn’t a bad consolation prize for coach Bill Belichick,” McShay said. “Parsons — my No. 4 prospect overall — slides to the No. 15 pick here because of unique circumstances following a rush on QBs and wide receivers. Dont’a Hightower will be back after opting out of the 2020 season and Chase Winovich has been disruptive off the edge, but Parsons gives Belichick a true sideline-to-sideline linebacker who can do a little bit of everything. And if the team moves on from Hightower after the 2021 season when he is set to be a free agent, Parsons would be the QB of this defense going forward.

“As for QB of the offense, it doesn’t seem to be in New England’s nature to trade up for one. Watch the free-agent market closely and keep an eye on what happens with former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo, but if it comes down to the draft, the Patriots might have to look to Day 2 if all five QBs are indeed off the board.”

New England is known for having a reliable linebacker corps and they’re far from that right now. Fortunately, Hightower will be back, but that may not be enough. Despite opting-out of the 2020 season, Parsons is still projected to be drafted as a Top-10 player and his do-it-all ability is extremely rare. He’s 6-foot-3, 245 pounds and he has 4.43 40-yard dash speed, which is abnormal for players in his position.

It’s difficult to imagine he’d drop down to No. 15, but if he does, the Patriots should certainly grab him without hesitation.

Four options for the Falcons with the No. 4 overall pick

With several needs and little cap space, trading back may be the best scenario for Atlanta. If the team stays put at pick No. 4, though, here are four options the Falcons could consider.

The Atlanta Falcons were hard to watch in 2020, winning just four games and blowing a handful of games they had no business losing. One positive to come out of last year’s abysmal season is the team landed a top-five pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Lions 2021 mock draft roundup: Things open back up after trade for Jared Goff

Examining the mock drafts from multiple draft based sites, noting the projected picks for the Detroit Lions, and identifying trends.

Following 2021 mock drafts for the Detroit Lions has been a roller coaster this offseason — and were only a month into the process.

After the 2021 National Championship, three players were routinely paired with the Lions and the No. 7 overall pick — DeVonta Smith (wide receiver, Alabama), Micah Parsons (linebacker, Penn State), and Jaylen Waddle (wide receiver, Alabama).

Then Matthew Stafford requested to be traded and the mock drafts that followed saw a shift to almost exclusively quarterbacks, including Justin Fields (Ohio State), Zack Wilson (BYU), and Trey Lance (North Dakota State).

Now that the Lions have traded Stafford to the L.A. Rams in exchange for draft picks and Jared Goff — the presumed starter for at least 2021 — things have opened back up in the mock draft market for the Lions.

Let’s take a look at what has happened over the past week, starting with some of the new names.

New names added this week

Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU (6-1, 200)
Currently being mocked by Lance Zierlein (NFL.com)

Zierlein: “The Lions could go in a number of directions here, including cornerback or linebacker, but with almost an entire receiving corps set to hit free agency, Chase could serve as a splashy WR1 for their new QB.”

Penei Sewell, T, Oregon (6-5, 325)
Currently being mocked by Chris Trapasso (CBS Sports)

Trapasso: “New Lions GM Brad Holmes spent the past few years with the Rams when Andrew Whitworth’s impact at left tackle was gigantic. Holmes has that in mind when picking Sewell for Jared Goff.”

Rashawn Slater, T/G, Northwestern (6-3, 314)
Currently being mocked by Danny Kelly (Ringer)

Kelly: “The Lions just completed a blockbuster trade, sending longtime quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams in exchange for a pair of future first-round picks, a 2021 third-rounder, and Jared Goff. The move gives Detroit the chance to hit the reset button and build a new foundation from the ground up. Bolstering the offensive line with Slater, a day-one starter at either tackle or guard, is a nice way to get things started as the team seeks to establish a new identity.”

Making a strong return

DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama (6-0, 175)
Currently being mocked by Joe Marino (The Draft Network), and Ryan Wilson (CBS Sports)

Marino: “It’s another new era in Detroit. Suddenly, Jared Goff is the starting quarterback, Dan Campbell is the head coach, and a host of ex-players are filling up his coaching staff. While there are plenty of questions about the roster, perhaps the most notable concern is what the plan is at wide receiver where Quintez Cephus, Victor Bolden, and Geronimo Allison are the only options under contract. DeVonta Smith is the most productive receiver in Crimson Tide history and is exceptional at getting open and catching the football—the two most important functions of playing receiver.”

Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama, (5-10, 182)
Currently being mocked by Bucky Brooks (NFL.com), Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News), and Josh Edwards (CBS Sports)

Iyer: “Waddle, like his Crimson Tide teammate Smith, is a highly skilled all-around receiver the Lions could use to run all the routes and get open everywhere outside for Jared Goff. Waddle would be a great replacement for aging free agent Marvin Jones Jr., assuming the Lions bring back big field-stretching younger free agent Kenny Golladay. Golladay, Waddle and tight end T.J. Hockenson would be a good foundation for Anthony Lynn’s new-look passing offense.”

Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State (6-2, 245)
Currently being mocked by Dan Kadar (Akron Beacon Journal), Bryan Fischer (Anthon Sports), and the Tankathon Staff,

Kadar: “By acquiring Goff — a middling quarterback in the NFL — it’s hard to say the Lions are in a full rebuild. They’re just really close to one. Because of that, it’s no guarantee they won’t take a quarterback at No. 7. But with a cache of first-round picks in the next two years, they can wait a year on a quarterback. If that’s the case, the Lions should be in the mode of acquiring superstar players. Parsons is on the same level as recent top 10 linebackers Roquan Smith and Devin White. He’s a foundation piece for a team that desperately needs them.”

Still being projected to Detroit

Zach Wilson, QB, BYU (6-2.5, 210)
Currently being mocked by Luke Easterling (Draft Wire), Henry McKenna (For the Win), and Ryan Gosling (Pro Football Network)

Easterling: “Yes, the Lions just acquired Jared Goff from the Rams, absorbing the rest of his massive contract extension. But that shouldn’t keep the new decision-makers in Detroit from passing on a franchise passer with this pick. Wilson had a stellar 2020 campaign, showing off all the traits of a future Pro Bowler.”

Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State (6-3, 221)
Currently being mocked by Ben Linsey, (PFF), AJ Schutte (Pro Football Network), and Draft Tek (Doug Hyde made Lions selection)

Linsey: “The Lions took back Jared Goff as part of the Matthew Stafford trade, but it’s unlikely that he is the Lions’ preferred long-term answer at the quarterback position. At the very least, he isn’t a reason to avoid taking a quarterback like Lance here in the draft. There is legitimate concern surrounding Lance’s accuracy and experience, especially since he’s played just one season as a starter in the FCS, but he also has absurd arm talent and gives any team the option to lean on him in the running game. It’s a bet worth taking for Detroit as they look toward life without Stafford.”

Out of the mix this week

Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State (6-2.5, 223)
Not currently being mocked to the Lions

Fields was off the board by the time the Lions were on the clock in most scenarios this week, and with most analysts not incorporating trades, we saw an absence in connections to Detroit. As quarterback rankings start to clear up — assuming they do with a limited offseason — we will likely see a Fields to Detroit connections again.

Falcons 2021 mock draft: First steps to winning now

With as many as six quarterbacks potentially going in the first round this year, many are projecting the Falcons to draft Ryan’s eventual replacement.

The Falcons finished the 2020 season with a 4-12 record, earning the fourth-overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft. Atlanta’s last top-five pick came in 2008 when the team drafted quarterback Matt Ryan third overall.

With as many as six quarterbacks potentially going in the first round this year, many are projecting the Falcons to draft Ryan’s eventual replacement. For this mock, I went in a different direction and focused on finding players that can help Atlanta win now.

Patriots select linebacker in first round of NFL.com mock draft

The Patriots sure up the linebacker position in NFL.com’s latest mock draft.

It is mock draft season, which means several experts have predicted who the New England Patriots will pick in April’s draft. Friday, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com made his mock draft, and had the Patriots selecting a linebacker with the 15th overall pick.

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons was the selection. Parsons would undoubtedly sure up the linebacker position for New England.

Parsons opted out of the 2020 college football season, but has two seasons of impressive work on his resume. He recorded 109 tackles in 2019, as well as four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. In addition, he proved to be very apt at rushing the passer, recording five sacks on the season.

Parsons first burst onto the scene in 2018. That year, he recorded 82 tackles and a sack and a half. He would be able to give a jolt to the New England linebacker position.

As Jeremiah explains, Parsons would give New England a versatile playmaker.

Parsons is an explosive, versatile playmaker, and the Patriots need to get faster on defense.

The linebacker position could be one that the Patriots address in the upcoming draft. With so many needs, New England will certainly have to make the most of each selection.

Lions mock draft roundup: 3 players emerge as favorites following 2021 National Championship

In this week’s Detroit Lions’ mock draft roundup, three players emerge as favorites following the 2021 National Championship.

With the 2021 National Championship and the first round of the NFL playoffs behind us, it’s a good opportunity to take a look at the most recent 2021 mock drafts. These mocks will give us an early look at who the analysts are projecting the Detroit Lions to select with pick No. 7 in the upcoming NFL draft.

One very common theme has presented itself with these post-national championship mock drafts: After a dominating showing in the NCAA playoffs, Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith, who was routinely mocked to the Lions, is now off the board before the Lions are on the clock in all but one mock draft.

Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama (6-0, 175)

Currently being mocked by Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News

Iyer: “The Lions got a nice closing stretch from Marvin Jones Jr. with Kenny Golladay (hip) on the shelf for most of the season, but Jones is also heading into his age 32 season as a free agent. It makes sense to think about a high-level replacement who can form a great new combination with Golladay for Matthew Stafford (or whoever else might be at QB for a new coach). Smith has picked up from he left off last season to become Heisman Trophy-worthy. He has 105 catches for 1,641 yards and 20 TDs in 12 games this season.”

While Iyer stuck with Smith to Detroit, two other analysts — with Smith off the board in their mocks — stuck with pairing the Lions with a wide receiver but went with Smith’s running mate at Alabama.

Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama (5-10, 182)

Currently being mocked by Anthony Treash (PFF) and Chris Trapasso (CBS Sports)

Treash: “Waddle missed most of the 2020 season due to a fractured ankle, but the Bama receiver was truly an explosive play waiting to happen in the four games he appeared in. He generated a Power 5-best 4.68 yards per route run, averaged 10.7 yards after the catch, teamed up for a perfect passer rating of 158.3 on his 29 targets and hauled in 329 deep receiving yards. The latter still ranks 13th among all Power 5 receivers despite appearing just four times all year. Waddle reportedly ran a 4.37 40-yard dash coming out of high school. He is a threat to house it anytime he gets the ball with that speed and explosiveness.”

Trapasso: “The Lions need to address receiver early given the contract status of their wideout room heading into the 2021 offseason. Waddle is as electric as they come and plays bigger than his size.”

The majority of mock drafters this week pivoted to the other side of the ball and connected the Lions with the top defensive player in this draft cycle.

Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State (6-2, 245)

Currently being mocked by Dane Brugler (The Athletic), Brentley Weissman (The Draft Network), Ryan Wilson (CBS Sports), Tankathon Staff, and Mike Kaye (NJ.com

Weissman: “Parsons has rare size and movement skills for the position and can affect the game in every phase. He is a physical downhill backer who has outstanding instincts, speed, and range. He has the versatility to play off the ball, but can also play near the LOS and be used as a rusher.”

Wilson: “Parsons opted out, but he’s another player who didn’t hurt his draft stock by doing so. He might end up being the best standup linebacker to come out in the last 4-5 years.”

Kaye: “The Lions need a new tone-setter on defense. Parsons is a dynamic talent who should make an immediate impact.”

Of Note: Brugler was the only analyst to do a two-round mock draft and while he gave the Lions’ Parsons in the first, he did have the Lions address wide receiver in the next round, pairing them with Rashod Bateman of Minnesota.

Eagles land Micah Parsons in Todd McShay’s first 2021 NFL mock draft

Todd McShay did his first mock draft for ESPN.com and he has the Philadelphia Eagles taking former Penn State linebacker, Micah Parsons.

[jwplayer nkt6MIDc]

The Philadelphia Eagles don’t value linebackers thanks to Howie Roseman’s analytical approach to evaluating talent, but 2021 could provide the perfect scenario to change that logic.

The NFL is a passing league now and Philadelphia has been exposed in the passing game thanks to hybrid tight ends dominating matchups against Eagles linebackers.

Todd McShay just released his first mock draft for ESPN.com, and he has Roseman rolling the dice on game-changing Penn State linebacker, Micah Parsons.

6. Philadelphia Eagles
Micah Parsons, ILB, Penn State*

The Eagles haven’t drafted an off-the-ball linebacker in the first two rounds since 2012 when they took Mychal Kendricks at No. 46 overall. But wow, is Parsons special. He can drop in coverage, wrap up in run defense or get to the QB when turned loose on a blitz.

While wide receiver remains a problem even after drafting Jalen Reagor in the first round last April — and LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase will be tempting — this WR class is deep and still offers playmakers when Philly is back on the clock on Day 2. Trading back is an option, but if the Eagles stay home, this pick at No. 6 is all about the best player available: Parsons.

Parson’s ability in coverage could allow the Eagles to play one linebacker while adding an extra defensive back to the base defense if the new coordinator chooses to.

McShay echoed the sentiments of ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., who said he believes Parsons and the Eagles are a good fit.

Parsons opted out this season, but in 2019 he logged 109 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, and four forced fumbles.

Eagles fans are clamoring for the trio of DeVonta Smith, Ja’Marr Chase, or Patrick Surtain, but Parsons could be the guy that helps erase some of the mistakes on the backend.

Draft Wire pairs Lions with athletic LB Micah Parsons in latest Mock Draft

In their latest Mock Draft, 2020 Week 13 edition, Draft Wire pairs the Detroit Lions with athletic Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons.

Until the Detroit Lions hire their new general manager and coach, it will be challenging to project what their roster will look like but that won’t slow down the Mock Draft machines from projecting what the team may do.

In their latest Mock Draft, 2020 Week 13 edition, Draft Wire had the Lions using the ninth overall pick to select athletic Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons.

“It’s always hard to peg what a new coach will do, especially when you don’t yet know who it will be,” Luke Easterling said. “No matter who takes over for Matt Patricia in Detroit, that coach will need as much top talent as humanly possible, regardless of position. That means taking the best available player on the board, and in this scenario, that’s a three-down playmaker for the heart of the defense in Parsons.”

While we really have no idea what the Lions defensive scheme will look like, Parsons is scheme versatile and has the athletic upside to anchor the middle of any defense. No matter what the Lions and up doing, Parsons would fit.

Parsons is big (6-3, 245) fast, (estimated to run in the 4.4-4.5 range), agile and while he can play at the MIKE, he has the range to shift all the way outside to the EDGE — think Jamie Collins like range, with more power.

Easterling is not alone in projecting the Lions and Parsons, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ($) also did this week, while CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards made the connection last week when the Lions were picking at 11.

Other notable Mock Draft pairings with the Lions this week include WR Jalen Waddle of Alabama (CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson), EDGE Kwity Paye of Michigan (Pro Football Network’s Matthew Valdovinos), and EDGE Gregory Rousseau of Miami (Tankathon).

Ranking the Philadelphia Eagles 2021 NFL Draft needs

Ranking the Philadelphia Eagles 2021 NFL draft needs

The Philadelphia Eagles are headed towards a rebuild and they’ve reached a critical juncture with franchise quarterback Carson Wentz’s mega-extension kicking in and the organization unsure of his future.

The Eagles have pressing needs and with salary cap issues looming, the franchise will need to rebuild through the draft.

Howie Roseman has struggled as a talent evaluator and the Eagles struggles stem from the lack of star power that the general manager has failed to bring into the organization.

With the Eagles set to face the Seahawks on Monday night, here’s a ranking of Philadelphia’s 2021 NFL Draft needs.
