Packers bring back rookie TE Messiah Swinson on practice squad

After clearing a practice squad spot, the Packers brought back rookie tight end Messiah Swinson on Thursday.

Releasing Johnny Lumpkin from the practice squad on Wednesday cleared the way for the Green Bay Packers to bring back rookie tight end Messiah Swinson, who is available for practice on Thursday, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

Signing Swinson, who is listed 6-7 and 259 pounds, will re-fill the practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers signed Swinson off the Packers’ practice squad before Week 1. He was waived on Wednesday and immediately returned to Green Bay.

Swinson didn’t appear in a game for the Panthers.

Swinson went undrafted out of Arizona State, where he caught 28 passes for 317 yards and two scores over two seasons with the Sun Devils. During the preseason with the Packers, Swinson played 28 snaps, including 23 as an inline run blocker.

The Packers released Swinson at final cuts but brought him back on the team’s initial practice squad of 2024, suggesting they see long-term developmental potential in him as a traditional “Y” tight end.

Packers release TE Johnny Lumpkin from practice squad

Could the Packers return rookie TE Messiah Swinson on the practice squad?

The Green Bay Packers released tight end Johnny Lumpkin from the practice squad on Tuesday, potentially opening the door for the return of a player signed off the team’s practice squad earlier this season.

Lumpkin, a 264-pound blocking tight end, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 10.

A week before signing Lumpkin, the Packers lost rookie tight end Messiah Swinson, who was signed off the practice squad and onto the 53-man roster of the Carolina Panthers. On Tuesday, the Panthers waived Swinson, who wasn’t active in any of the team’s first three games of the 2024 season.

Releasing Lumpkin could be the move that allows for Swinson to return on the practice squad this week.

The Packers signed Swinson as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State and made him part of the team’s initial practice squad, suggesting they liked his potential as an inline blocker.

The Packers didn’t announce any other roster moves on Tuesday. The team will practice Wednesday before releasing the first injury report of Week 4.

Panthers announce flurry of moves as Adam Thielen, Jordan Fuller head to IR

The Panthers made a bunch of moves on Tuesday, including placing both WR Adam Thielen and S Jordan Fuller on injured reserve.

The Carolina Panthers will now have to deal with a few losses following their first win of the 2024 campaign.

On Tuesday, the team placed wide receiver Adam Thielen on injured reserve. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was first with the news on Thielen, who is dealing with a “fairly significant” hamstring injury he sustained in Sunday’s 36-22 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Carolina also shelved safety Jordan Fuller, who has started all three games this season. The team did not disclose the nature of his injury in their official announcement.

Both Thielen and Fuller will now miss at least the next four weeks while on the injured reserve list.

The Panthers, in addition, parted ways with tight end Messiah Swinson—who was signed to the active roster on Sept. 3.

To patch up the departures, the Panthers promoted three players from their practice squad—wideout Jalen Coker and safeties Demani Richardson and Russ Yeast. Coker, an undrafted rookie out of the College of Holy Cross, led the Panthers in receiving yards (71) this preseason.

As a result of those promotions, Carolina signed cornerback Justin Hardee and safety Alex Cook to the practice squad while releasing second-year outside linebacker Eku Leota.

Panthers Week 1 inactives: 7 players deactivated for opener vs. Saints

The Panthers named seven inactives for their regular-season opener in New Orleans.

The Carolina Panthers have listed seven inactives ahead of this afternoon’s regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Those players are as follows:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • DL LaBryan Ray
  • C Andrew Raym
  • S Jammie Robinson
  • TE Messiah Swinson
  • TE Tommy Tremble

With Tremble down due to a hamstring injury and Ian Thomas now on injured reserve with a lingering calf issue, the Panthers are expected to start rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders in what will be his first official NFL game. The fourth-round pick earned rave reviews from head coach Dave Canales earlier this summer.

“So JT is taking those steps that we’re looking for,” Canales said of the 21y-year-old during training camp. “Made a big play at Fan Fest to end it, to end the scrimmage on a corner. Had a couple nice plays today, nice catches. He’s doin’ it. He’s making the most of his opportunity. It’s pushed him right up with that first group, to be able to show the guys you can count on him and he’s been really dependable with that.”

Sanders will be backed by veteran Jordan Matthews and Feleipe Franks, who was signed to the active roster on Saturday.

Panthers reportedly signing former Packers TE to active roster

With the statuses of Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas still up in the air for Week 1, the Panthers added some insurance to the TE room.

The Carolina Panthers may very well be without their top two tight ends when they kick off their regular season on Sunday. So, they’re looking to grab a little bit of insurance.

As first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston on Tuesday, the team is signing tight end Messiah Swinson off the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. The 6-foot-7, 259-pound rookie will now be added to Carolina’s active 53-man roster ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

A Bay Shore, N.Y. native, Swinson split his collegiate career between the University of Missouri (2019 to 2021) and Arizona State University (2022 to 2023). Over those five years, he amassed 28 receptions for 317 yards and two touchdowns.

Swinson was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May. He’d later be released during the team’s cutdown to their initial 53-man roster and was later brought back as a member of their practice squad.

With the statuses of projected starter Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas still up in the air for this weekend, Swinson should provide some depth alongside fellow rookie and fourth-round pick Ja’Tavion Sanders as well as veteran Jordan Matthews.

Packers lose rookie TE Messiah Swinson to Panthers

The Carolina Panthers signed rookie tight end Messiah Swinson off the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers signed rookie tight end Messiah Swinson off the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson.

The Packers signed Swinson as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in May. He was released at final cuts on August 27 and re-signed to the practice squad the next day.

Swinson’s departure allowed the Packers to re-fill the practice squad with the signing of former Miami Dolphins running back Chris Brooks.

Players on practice squads are allowed to sign contracts to join 53-man rosters elsewhere.

Swinson played 28 snaps for the Packers over three preseason games. He failed to catch his lone target, but his job is mostly inline run blocking. Of his 28 snaps, 23 were run-blocking snaps.

In Carolina, Swinson will join Ian Thomas, Tommy Tremble, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jordan Matthews at tight end.

The Panthers released veteran pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to make room for Swinson.
