49ers jerseys selling like crazy since end of regular season

These figures on #49ers merchandise sales over the last month are crazy.

The 49ers’ national appeal is always apparent when San Francisco plays on the road. Even in the most hostile environments there’s a visible amount of red and gold dotted in the crowd.

Quantifying a team’s popularity is tough, but one way we can do so is via merchandise and jersey sales. If those are key indicators, the 49ers are perhaps the most popular football team in the country.

Sports business reporter Joe Pompliano had some eye-popping numbers about San Francisco’s merch sales over the last month or so. He reported on Twitter that the club has done $25 million in merchandise sales in the last two weeks.

This is pretty wild!

It makes a lot of sense though. Fans may have been waiting to buy Brock Purdy or Christian McCaffrey jerseys and used the Super Bowl trip as an excuse to do so.

The Super Bowl’s proximity to the 49ers might also be playing a role. Fans heading to Las Vegas for the game may have wanted to gear up in support of their club if they were going to go through the process of actually getting to the host city.

49ers fan support in Vegas during the week-long leadup to the game has been loud, and now it appears fans are cheering with their wallets as well.

Cowboys trio lands in Top 25 for latest merchandise sales

The Cowboys were the only team to land five players in the Top 50 for player-branded sales for the period before 2021 training camp. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The latest sales figures have been released for NFL player-specific merchandise.

The Cowboys are, once again, America’s Team.

Cha-ching.

The rankings from the NFLPA are for the period of March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2021, so the list is somewhat behind the very latest trends and doesn’t even include the last season of play. Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, for example, had yet to begin his remarkable rookie campaign; he falls outside the Top 25 as a result.

At No. 6, quarterback Dak Prescott is the highest-ranking Cowboys player on the list, which includes all player-branded merchandise sold online and in brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Fans were clearly eager to rep Prescott’s gear as he made his way back from the injury that prematurely ended his 2020 season.

CeeDee Lamb places 13th; the wide receiver was preparing to start just his second season in the league for the period that sales were tabulated.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott is 16th. His inclusion here gives the Cowboys three players inside the Top 20. No other team can make that claim.

The aforementioned Parsons sits at No. 28, the fourth-highest-ranking defensive player. Again, this was before his transcendent Defensive Rookie of the Year season had even begun. He no doubt moved much higher as the 2021 season played out.

Amari Cooper- while he was still in the silver and blue, anyway- comes in 47th.

Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady led all player-specific merchandise sales for the prescribed period; Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, and New England’s Mac Jones round out the top five.

George Kittle, one spot below Prescott, is the highest-ranking non-quarterback in the Top 50.

The Cowboys outpaced all NFL teams with five players on the Top 50. San Francisco landed four players on the list; the Buccaneers, Steelers, and Rams all featured three players.

Twenty-eight of the league’s 32 teams have a player somewhere in the Top 50.

Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara among Top 20 NFL players in merchandise sales

New Orleans Saints superstars like Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Michael Thomas ranked high among their peers in a recent NFLPA report.

[jwplayer bAVEA7YT-ThvAeFxT]

Don’t let anyone tell you that the New Orleans Saints lack star talent. The NFL Players Association released its list of the top 50 players in merchandise sales for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, and three household names for Saints fans made the list.

Franchise quarterback Drew Brees, of course, led the trio at No. 13. He’s the eighth-ranked quarterback among his peers, trailing the new front-runner in Patrick Mahomes (who placed first in the entire NFL) and his new NFC South rival, Tom Brady (who recently shared some free marketing advice with Brees), as well as other passers including Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Dak Prescott.

The next Saints player on the list is Alvin Kamara, who clocked in at No. 18. Kamara has expanded his personal apparel line and picked up more endorsements while also launching his Twitch streaming channel, where fans can watch him play video games with his friends and other celebrities. What’s interesting is that Kamara is entering a contract year, and his possible departure from the Saints next season could mean a big loss in merchandising revenue for the team. It’s certainly a situation to watch.

Rounding out the group is Michael Thomas. The All-Pro wide receiver was closer to the end of the pack at No. 38, but his stardom is on the rise after a record-breaking 2019 season. Right now he ranks fifth at his position behind Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, Julian Edelman, and Amari Cooper. The receivers in this top 50 list earning less than Thomas in merchandising revenue include Stefon Diggs, Julio Jones, and Davante Adams.

So fans should expect to see plenty of Saints jerseys carrying Brees, Kamara, and Thomas’s names in the near future — or at least once social distancing measures are lessened around the country. In the meantime, Saints fans playing the popular Nintendo video game “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” can share their fandom with custom shirts and hats recently produced by the team.

Texans’ Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt land among top 50 of NFLPA merch sales list

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson and DE J.J. Watt were on the top 50 list of player merchandise sales according to official NFLPA numbers.

The Houston Texans have two of the 50-best players in the NFL.

At least, they do in merchandise sales.

According to new data from the NFLPA released on April 17, the Texans had two players land on the top 50 list of player sales among officially licensed products from March 1, 2019, to Feb. 29, 2020. Those two players were Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson at No. 27 and All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt.

Watson’s No. 27 spot was 14th among quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo, Dak Prescott, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Carson Wentz, Josh Allen, Mitch Trubisky, and Sam Darnold were all ahead of the Texans’ field general.

Watt’s No. 32 place was the third-highest among defenders, and he was one of eight defenders to even crack the list. The only defenders higher than Watt were Khalil Mack and Nick Bosa.

The Texans weren’t the only team on the list to represent the AFC South. The Jacksonville Jaguars had two quarterbacks on the list in rookie Gardner Minshew and Nick Foles.

Three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who also had a 99 rating on Madden NFL 20 and was still technically a Texans player during the time frame of the list, did not make the top 50.

Two Saints make list of Top 50 in merchandise sales, both in Top 20

New Orleans Saints superstars Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara ranked high among their peers in the latest NFLPA merchandise sales report.

[jwplayer 8U0ea5N1-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL Players Association released its list of the top 50 players in 2019 merchandise sales from March 1 to November 30, and two members of the New Orleans Saints ranked high among their peers: quarterback Drew Brees and running back Alvin Kamara. While each player carries unique name recognition in their own right, the success the Saints have experienced in recent years (winning 27 of their last 35 games, including the playoffs) has to have given them a well-deserved boost.

Brees ranked No. 11 in the NFL, while Kamara placed at No. 17. They were not joined by other notable teammates like wide receiver Michael Thomas, which is a bit puzzling given his rapid rise to the top in prominence. Maybe he’ll catch on in the next fiscal year after shattering the all-time record for catches in a single season.

As for who outpaced them: Brees was pushed out of the top-10 by rising stars Saquon Barkley and JuJu Smith-Schuster, each of whom have supplemented their NFL exploits with avid social media and video game streaming support. Kamara missed out on the No. 15 spots with two young quarterbacks ahead of him in Jimmy Garoppolo and Mitchell Trubisky.

Lamar Jackson led Cyber Monday merchandise sales

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has already started his takeover, leading all athletes in Cyber Monday merchandise sales.

The NFL is absolutely enthralled with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. So much so that he destroyed in merchandise sale on one of the biggest shopping days of the year.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jackson outsold every other athlete in total merchandise sales on the Fanatics website.

It seems every week we’re left with new additions to his highlight reel, whether it be a long run dashing between defenders or a perfectly-placed pass for a touchdown. With Jackson currently the frontrunner for the NFL’s MVP, about to set the single-season rushing record for quarterbacks and leading the best team in the league, there’s little wonder as to why fans were buying up his merchandise.

As coach John Harbaugh was caught saying to Jackson at one point this season, “You know how many little kids in this country are gonna be wearing number 8 playing quarterback for the next 20 years?”

Looks like Harbaugh was right.
