Former Ohio State football player hired as Mercer head coach

Former Ohio State football player hired as Mercer head coach #GoBucks

Ohio State football fans will remember Mike Jacobs from his playing days from 1997 through 2001. He spent time playing on the offensive line and was a former walk-on who was awarded a scholarship for his last two seasons.

In addition to playing a role on the offensive line, Jacobs was the long snapper. He is the son of a former Ohio State offensive coordinator, Mike Jacobs, who was the coordinator for three seasons from 1997 through 1999, which shows that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

The Mercer Bears of the FCS have hired Jacobs to be their new head coach after he had a successful four seasons coaching the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at the Divison II level. He went 32-9 and led the Bears to a conference championship this last season.

Jacobs was also great during his time as head coach for the Divison II Notre Dame Falcons, where he went 42-8 and won two conference championships. We wish Jacobs good luck!

Auburn defeated Mercer 42-16 to open the 2022 season.

Auburn scored 14 points in each of the game’s first three quarters to move to 1-0. The game took an unusual break towards the end of the third quarter, as lightning was detected within a close distance to Jordan-Hare Stadium that forced the game to be delayed for an hour and 27 minutes.

The first play following the delay, Auburn running back Tank Bigsby rushed for a 39-yard touchdown to cap the Tigers’ scoring.

The biggest storyline from Auburn’s win is the quarterback situation. Earlier this week, it was announced that [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] would get the starting job, but it was also reported that [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] would see time as well. Finley attempted more passes, completing 9-of-14 passes for 112 yards, but Auburn got more production from Ashford, who completed 4-of-7 passes for 100 yards, but would go on to rush for an additional 68 yards.
