The Mississippi State Bulldogs will welcome the Memphis Tigers to Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss., Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Memphis at Mississippi State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.
Just on the outside looking on the AFCA Coaches Poll, Mississippi State will look to compete in a difficult SEC West that also has Alabama and Arkansas among top-20 programs.
The Bulldogs were 7-6 last season and will again be led by head coach Mike Leach. QB Will Rogers, who had 4,739 passing yards and 36 touchdowns last season, will captain the side.
He’ll be taking on Memphis, a team that went 6-6 last season and 3-5 in AAC play. It beat the then-top-25 SMU. QB Seth Henigan. who had 25 touchdowns to 8 interceptions last season will lead the Tigers into battle.
Memphis will again be led by head coach Ryan Silverfield, who will enter his third season with the team, possessing a 14-9 record through his first 2 years.

Memphis at Mississippi State picks and predictions
Prediction
Mississippi State 38, Memphis 17
Money line
PASS.
An -800 money line wager makes no sense, so look for a different number if you’re looking to back Mississippi State.
Against the spread
BET MISSISSIPPI STATE -16.5 (-112).
Mississippi State didn’t have a wildly successful season last year, but it is bringing back a star quarterback that should be able to improve his already elite play. The Bulldogs beat Auburn, Kentucky and Texas A&M last season.
They also lost to Memphis by 2 last season, which I’m sure Rogers has in the back of his mind. Rogers annihilated Memphis for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. He should have a similar performance.
WR Calvin Austin III, who had 3 straight touchdowns (one being a punt return) is now on the Steelers. Replacing his dynamic nature is not going to be easy as he beat the Bulldogs not the play of Henigan.
Rogers should keep the pedal on the metal and blow out the Tigers.
Over/Under
LEAN UNDER 57.5 (-112).
The game last season was a 31-29 win for Memphis.
Take out the fluky return touchdown, and it would have gone Under this total. This is a lofty total, and Henigan may come out sloppy against a team hoping to be one of the best in the SEC.
The Bulldogs’ leading tackler LB Jett Johnson will return this season along with the team’s leader in sacks and tackles for a loss, LB Tyrus Wheat.
They didn’t have a great 2021, but the Mississippi State defense should be improved this season. Couple that with the absence of Austin III, and I’ll LEAN to the UNDER 57.5 (-112) here.
