Recruiting Roundup: MSU Football Offers Top 2023 Recruit; Highly-Touted Spartan Target Re-Opens Recruitment

High-level recruiting never sleeps, and that certainly was true this past week for Michigan State.

Michigan State Football was very active on the recruiting front this past week, handing out a number of scholarships to prospects from the 2022 and 2023 classes. These offers dominated the Spartans recruiting news cycle, but there were plenty of other big news items that came out in the last seven days.

Here are some of the top headlines from this past week on the Michigan State Football and Basketball recruiting trail.

MSU Football hands out offers to numerous recruits, including top recruit in ‘23 class

Michigan State was extremely active this week on the recruiting front, with numerous recruits announcing on Twitter they received a scholarship offer from the Spartans.

One of the most notable recruits to announce his Spartan offer was the 2023 highly-touted prospect Lebbeus Overton. Overton, a defensive end out of Alpharetta, Ga., is currently the top-ranked player in the 247Sports 2023 recruiting rankings.

Here are some more Michigan State targets that received scholarship offers this past week (click on the link to read more on the prospect)

  • Deone Walker – 3-star prospect from Detroit in 2022 class
  • Marquis Gracial – 3-star prospect from Saint Charles, Mo. in 2022 class
  • Olaus Alinen, a 6-foot-6 and 315 pound offensive tackle from Finland in 2023 class
  • Kayden McDonald, a 6-foot-3 and 325-pound defensive tackle from Suwanee, Ga. in 2023 class
  • Chase Carter, a three-star defensive end prospect from Minnesota in 2022 class

Two-Sport, 4-Star Spartan target de-commits from Kansas

Some very intriguing recruiting news hit the Twitter timeline on Tuesday evening when dual-sport 4-star recruit Keon Coleman de-committed from Kansas. Coleman announced the decision via Twitter, creating some excitement among Spartan fans on their new chances at landing the highly-touted recruit.

Coleman is a 4-star wide receiver prospect but also is looking to play basketball at the next level. He’s been someone that has been a big focus for Tucker and his staff for quite a while, and Michigan State could potentially be back in the hunt for his talents now that his recruitment is again open.

MSU Basketball Virtually Hosts 4-Star SG

Tom Izzo and Michigan State Basketball remain in “constant contact” with 2022 4-star shooting guard prospect Jaden Schutt, which included a virtual meeting last Thursday. Schutt, who resides in Yorkville, Ill., received an offer from the Spartans in June, and also currently holds scholarship offers from a number of big-time programs including Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa and Nebraska.

247Sports ranks Schutt as the 85th overall recruit nationally and second best in Illinois in the class of 2022.

Spartans on Top Schools List for pair of 3-Star Football Recruits

MSU Football remained in the hunt for a pair of 3-star prospects in the class of 2021 this past week. Steffan Johnson, a cornerback out of Venice, Fla., included the Spartans in his top five that was released on Thursday, and Ru’Quan Buckley, an offensive lineman and defensive end out of Grand Rapids, Mich., has Michigan State in his top 11 that was released on Saturday.

247Sports has Johnson as a heavy lean towards Michigan State at this point, while the Spartans have some ground to make up on Buckley with 247Sports labeling Nebraska as the current favorites.
