On this day: Celtics hold 2018 media day; Bryce Brown signed to camp deal

The team was blissfully unaware of the turbulence to come.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team held its media day proceedings for the 2018-19 NBA season. The Celtics did not have any way of knowing the disappointing way the season unfolded. Boston finished 49-33 after much internal turbulence that led to the team losing both star point guard Kyrie Irving and veteran big man Al Horford in free agency.

As such, media day was marked as it often is by much optimism among the players. “I can only feel like myself playing out there in an NBA game,” shared Irving via the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

“I had great opportunities this summer to be around great people,” added the former Duke standout, who related he’d spent much of the summer in the Pacific Northwest playing pickup games with Celtics legend Bill Russell in the audience.

2023-24 OKC Thunder media day officially announced

The Thunder will host their Media Day in less than two weeks.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Tuesday their 2023-24 media day will be held on Monday, Oct. 2. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and players are expected to speak to the media starting at 11 a.m. CT.

This marks the unofficial return of the NBA season. Media day provides coaches and players throughout the league a chance to publicly talk for the first time — in most cases — for months.

Training camp will ensue following the event. The Thunder will kick off their preseason schedule when they welcome the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, Oct. 9.

The Thunder’s regular-season opener will be against the Chicago Bulls on Oct. 25.

LOOK: Chiefs players are sharing some of their favorite media day photos

Several #Chiefs players shared some of their favorite photos from the team’s media production day:

Kansas City Chiefs players are showing their excitement for training camp and the 2023 NFL season on social media this Wednesday.

The clock is ticking down with football season drawing near. The excitement is palpable in Kansas City as players anxiously await the opportunity to compete for another Super Bowl title.

For whatever reason, several players took to Twitter on Wednesday to share some photos from the team’s media production day back in June. One Chiefs rookie even shared an extra football-themed photo of his daughter.

Check it: Justin Herbert has very awkward moment at Chargers media day

The Chargers quarterback gave a sly gesture to the camera on his way to meet with reporters at media day.

Justin Herbert is one of the NFL’s fastest-rising stars, but the Chargers quarterback has a hard time getting comfortable in the spotlight.

Despite playing in Hollywood, he shies away from the prying eyes of the media and was visibly displeased to have a camera trained on him while preparing to speak to a reporter at the Chargers’ media day on Monday.

On his approach to the set of the interview, Herbert can be seen slyly flipping the bird at the camera.

Herbert’s desire to keep to himself relative to the prying eyes of the press and the Chargers’ social media team is well documented. Still, the earnest nature of the interactions makes for great content. Perhaps he will someday get his wish to be left alone but for now, he will have to get away with whatever he can to get the cameras pointed in another direction.

PHOTOS: Rockets pose for portraits at 2022-23 media day

Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr., Alperen Sengun, and Kevin Porter Jr. are among many #Rockets who took part in official media day photo shoots at the opening of training camp.

The first game, albeit an exhibition, of the 2022-23 Houston Rockets season took place Sunday, Oct. 2 versus San Antonio.

But for potential rising stars like Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Kevin Porter Jr., and beyond, activities actually got started a few days before that. It all began with the Sept. 26 media day at Toyota Center, where the main event consisted of players throughout the roster responding to questions about the new season.

Media day, however, also consists of various other photography and video shoots. Some are taken by internal team sources and are used by the team in promotions throughout the season, while others are from professional photographers who can license them for use across all sorts of potential media content related to the Rockets.

From 2022-23 media day, here’s a look at images of various Rockets players captured by professional photographers from USA TODAY Sports, Getty Images, and the Associated Press.

Boston’s Derrick White has new dad jokes for the 2022-23 NBA season

The known pun fan tried out some new material at Boston’s 2022 Media Day.

Boston Celtics reserve guard Derrick White came to the team last season with the reputation of being a huge “dad joke” aficionado even before he had become a dad in real life. Even after the birth of White’s son, Hendricks, late in the 2021-22 NBA season, Celtics fans did not get much from the Colorado native in the way of said dad jokes.

But the folks at NBC Sports Boston did not let White get off so easy on the team’s 2022 media day, asking for some receipts to demonstrate his dad joke fandom. The former Colorado State standout happily obliged with a pair, the first an old classic.

“What did one hat say to the other (hat)?” asked White; “You stay here,” he answered. “I’ll go on ahead.”

That of course elicited a few laughs, with the Celtics guard feeling emboldened, he unleashed a doozy: “What’s the last thing on your body to die,” White inquired, intentionally taking a morbid turn for a dad joke.

“It’s your pupils,” he answered with a smirk, “because they dilate (die late).”

Listen, now — you’re the one that clicked on an article about dad jokes; don’t blame us.

Individual, team defense points of emphasis this season for Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser

“(I’m) just trying to be a great team defender and hold my own when I’m in isolation situations,” related the Boston swingman.

The Boston Celtics hope forward Sam Hauser can contribute significantly during the 2022-23 season with their depth in less than optimal shape on the wing, and the former Virginia standout has been working on his game in anticipation.

Speaking to NBC Boston Sports on Monday’s Celtics media day, Hauser detailed what he’s been working on this offseason.

“I’ve been focusing on my positioning terminology, the scheme’s that we try to run here with the Celtics,” he explained. “And, overall, just getting better individually on defense, guarding straight up one-on-one.”

“Defense is something you can always work on,” suggested Hauser. “There’s never an endpoint to where you’re trying to reach, but you can always get better.”

“So, (I’m) just trying to be a great team defender and hold my own when I’m in isolation situations,” he said.

Hauser’s shot has been remarkably consistent at all levels of his career, so it seems probable he will add to the team’s offense with his 3-point shooting with little trouble.

His defense will be key to him staying on the floor this season, and with swingman Danilo Gallinari likely out for the entire regular season, Hauser’s help off the bench will be no afterthought.

JD Davison talks about his quadruple-double in high school

The Celtics two way floor general had a 29-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist, 11-steal quadruple-double before his sole season at Auburn.

For most players on the Boston Celtics’ roster, the focus on each season’s Media Day proceedings is on the campaign ahead, but as a rookie two way point guard, JD Davison has yet to forge a foundation off of which fans can base expectations apart from setting a record with the Celtics in Las Vegas Summer League for the most assists scored in the annual exhibition series.

But in a Media Day interview with NBC Sports Boston on Monday, Davison shared a little bit about his past, confirming he had indeed once scored a 29-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist, 11-steal quadruple-double in high school. “I was just out there having fun,” he explained. “We were up by quite a bit.”

“I think I had the triple-double first, and my brother was like ‘You need four more assists,'” he added. “I’m like, ‘For what?’ and he never told me, so I started passing the ball and got four assists.”

Asked specifically how he managed to pick up 11 steals, Davison replied with a wry smile “I was just out there running like a chicken with its head cut off.”

Celtics’ Luke Kornet buys into ‘Green Kornet’ nickname at Boston’s 2022 Media Day

It narrowly won out over ‘UniKornet’.

You don’t get to choose your own nickname, but you can come to terms with what the masses have selected on your behalf, which Boston Celtics reserve big man Luke Kornet got to find out firsthand on the Celtics’ 2022 Media Day on Monday.

Speaking with NBC Sports Boston on whether he prefers to be called the UniKornet or the Green Kornet, the Vanderbilt product seemed torn. “The problem with ‘the Green Kornet’ is to be Hornet, (it’d be) ‘core net,’ but it’s ‘CORE-net,’ suggested the Celtics center with plenty of emphasis on the first syllable in the latter example. “So, I’m going to go with ‘UniKornet,’ he added.

Almost as soon as the words left his lips, Kornet appeared to change his mind, however. “It’s more appropriate for Green (Kornet with the Celtics),” he second-guessed, playing with the contours of his name and current situation.

“I’m phlegmatic as my wife will tell you, so indecision can be an issue,” he joked. “Okay, I’ll do ‘Green Kornet’ because it definitely makes the most sense with the Celtics, and it’s a fun, creative nickname.”

‘We were all shocked by what was going on,’ says Jaylen Brown of Celtics’ Ime Udoka scandal

None of Boston’s top players reportedly knew what was going on with Ime Udoka until the news broke.

While the focus during the Boston Celtics‘ media day was on the players and the 2022-23 NBA season ahead — as it ought to be — the ongoing Ime Udoka scandal loomed. Even star players revealed they were as blindsided as fans were by the news of Udoka’s suspension and the events leading to it.

“We were all shocked by what was going on,” said Jaylen Brown. “A little confused. A lot of the information wasn’t being shared with us, so we can’t really comment on it.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Jayson Tatum.

“It’s a lot to process (and) unexpected, especially coming into the season when you feel a certain way … It’s just a lot if I’m being honest.”

The issue of whether Udoka’s relationship was consensual or not was also a topic of importance discussed by players, who did not feel comfortable commenting at length about the matter without more information.

“I wish we had more details,” related Brown. “From what we know, it’s hard to make a decision whether it’s consensual or not … I guess there is more to it, possibly. We don’t know.”

“It’s been hell for us,” offered Marcus Smart. “Nobody really knows anything. We’re just in the wind, like everybody else. The last couple of days have been confusing.”
