Swinney Camp an ‘eye-opening’ experience for local standout

One of the more impressive wide receivers during last week’s Dabo Swinney Camp was none other than a local star in Greenville (S.C.) four-star Mazeo Bennett.

Bennett — a 6-foot, 165-pound rising junior — certainly looked the part during his participation in the morning session on Day 2 of Swinney Camp. It’s no wonder that 247Sports considers him to be a top prospect in the Palmetto State, as well as the nation’s No. 33 overall ranked receiver in the class of 2024.

“It was great,” Bennett told The Clemson Insider regarding his Swinney Camp experience. “Learning how Coach (Tyler) Grisham teaches his wide receivers and really getting an in-depth view of who Coach Grisham was very eye-opening for me. He’s a guy who’s gonna get after his receivers, but he’s gonna teach them instead of putting you down.”

“He’s gonna get onto you as well as he’s gonna teach you,” Bennett continued. “It’s a lot of instruction to it as well.”

Speaking to multiple receiver prospects in the class of 2024, it’s been made clear that Grisham is not offering a rising junior wide receiver until June 13. That date lines up with the finality of Clemson’s camp schedule for the summer, as the Tigers will host a three-day overnight session from June 10-12.

With that said, what did Bennett hear regarding a potential offer last week?

“He said that I showed him everything I needed to show him,” Bennett said. “He came to one of my practices not too long ago and he’s been saying that since that practice, I’ve shown him everything that he needed to see. June 13 is when he’s offering receivers, so he just wanted to let me know.”

“It would mean a lot,” he said of receiving a potential offer from the Tigers. “Just Clemson being the hometown school and just the legacy that wide receivers that Clemson has put out into the NFL. Great receivers come out of Clemson, so an offer from Clemson would mean a lot.”

A lot of college teams want to get the talented receiver out of Greenville High School on campus, but Clemson was able to do so on June 2. Bennett wasn’t going to do any camps, but he figured it wouldn’t hurt to go down the street and workout for a team he’s looking to get offered by.

“I think I proved to Coach Grisham why I’m the best receiver in the state,” he said. “I worked hard for it and I just want to prove that to everybody and I feel like I did that when I went.”

Following Clemson, Bennett made his way to the University of Louisville, where his brother, Zykiesis Cannon, played defensive back from 2014-17. Bennett reported an offer from the Cardinals back on May 13.

Bennett said that he’ll be back at the University of South Carolina on Friday, before making his way to Coastal Carolina with his 7-on-7 team this weekend. He has other visits in the works, but nothing concrete at the moment.

Grisham’s honesty resonates with standout local wideout

In December, as part of its 2022 recruiting class, Clemson signed a pair of standouts from Greenville (S.C.) High School – tight end Josh Sapp and offensive lineman Collin Sadler.

Another talented prospect from Greenville High that the Tigers have their eye on is Mazeo Bennett, a speedy and explosive four-star wide receiver in the 2024 class.

Bennett spoke with The Clemson Insider recently and gave the latest on his recruitment, as well as what he’s been hearing from Clemson wide receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Tyler Grisham.

“I just talked to Coach Grisham last week,” Bennett said. “So, we’re planning to get back down there sometime soon. It went good. He just talked about Clemson and what they see in me and how much he wants to get me in front of Dabo (Swinney) this summer.”

“I just feel like our relationship has grown,” Bennett added regarding his relationship with Clemson’s wide receivers coach. “He tries to get in contact with me every time that he can. We talk on the phone. We can talk on the phone for hours, just talking about life and football and anything that can pop up in the conversation, we could talk about it smoothly.”

Bennett was last on Clemson’s campus for an unofficial visit dating back to March 12. He’s planning on returning to Tiger Town sometime this summer. He’s trying to stay away from camps, but if Clemson would like to see him work out, it’s something he’ll have to consider.

With June 1 looming, what has Bennett heard regarding a potential offer?

“He has to wait,” Bennett said. “I respect Coach Grisham for that because he definitely plays by the rules and he tells me that straight up. But, the main thing Coach Grisham is, ‘We want you. We’re interested in you. Just keep doing what you’re doing.’ The main thing he says every time we’re on the phone is he’s got to get me in front of Coach Swinney.”

That level of honesty goes a long way.

“That level of honesty means the most,” he said. “When you keep it honest with me and don’t sugar coat it, that means the most.”

“Just seeing my teammates be patient with it, it just made me want to be patient with it,” Bennett continued. “They didn’t rush it, they didn’t force it, they just let it come. I definitely understand it and I understand it more when my teammates talk to me about they recruiting process and how they feel about it.”

Clemson co-defesnive coordinator and safeties coach Mickey Conn recently stopped by Greenville High School, but Bennett indicated that the visit wasn’t necessarily on his behalf. However, he did say that Grisham is supposed to come down and watch practice sometime in the near future.

Right now, Bennett is enjoying the process. He’s taking his recruitment slow but would like to make a decision next summer, prior to his senior season. He mentions South Carolina, Miami and Tennessee as the schools that are definitely recruiting him the hardest.

Bennett has scheduled a visit to Tennessee on May 28. In addition to Clemson and some of the programs mentioned above, Bennett’s looking to visit Ohio State, Louisville and North Carolina.

He feels like being able to see some of these schools this summer will help puts things in further perspective, as far as his recruitment is concerned.

One of the biggest things for Bennett this summer is seeing if Clemson pulls the trigger on a potential scholarship offer.

“It would mean a lot,” he said. “Clemson’s the hometown school. They would definitely be taken into serious consideration. They right down the street from my house, My family could come to watch me play almost every Saturday, so that would mean a lot”

Conversation with Swinney highlights local WR’s latest visit to Clemson

Clemson’s staff is closely watching this standout local wide receiver who was back on campus last weekend.

Greenville (S.C.) High School’s Mazeo Bennett – a 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore in the class of 2024 – returned to Tiger Town for an unofficial visit last Saturday.

“Overall me and the fam had a great time viewing in depth what Clemson has to offer that’s different than other colleges,” Bennett said of the visit in an interview with The Clemson Insider.

Bennett, who was also on campus as an unofficial visitor for the Florida State game last October, said with a laugh that the “amazing food” is one thing that stands out to him about Clemson.

More seriously, though, a few things most strongly appeal to him about Clemson based on his visits to the school and the time he’s spent around the program.

“They have great people in the program,” he said. “Great fans and they have a very homey feeling.”

The highlight of Bennett’s experience at Clemson last Saturday, he said, was speaking with Dabo Swinney.

Clemson’s head coach let the talented wideout know that the Tigers are keeping close tabs on him.

“We talked about their interest in me,” Bennett said of his conversation with Swinney. “And how many eyes they have on me.”

Swinney left a big impression on Bennett.

“After meeting with Dabo, he’s a really down-to-earth guy,” Bennett said. “Close with God. And faithful to everything he does/touches.”

Bennett’s latest visit to Clemson also gave him the chance to catch up with receivers coach Tyler Grisham, whom Bennett has been building a bond with.

“Coach Grisham always tells me to trust the process,” Bennett said. “And to take my time and investigate every college I’m at including them.”

Overall, Bennett feels his “relationship definitely grew with Clemson” during last weekend’s visit, and he’s hoping to receive an offer from the Tigers after they turn the page to offering 2024 recruits this summer and beyond.

“It has always meant a lot to me that Clemson has been recruiting me,” he said. “So an offer from them would mean a lot.”

Penn State gave Bennett his latest offer last week, joining South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina, App State and Liberty on his early offer list.

Bennett has also visited South Carolina this year. Up next for him is a trip to Georgia this weekend.

While out and about on the recruiting trail this week, Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham checked up on a few future Tigers, among other recruits.

On Tuesday, Grisham traveled to Dutch Fork High School (Irmo, S.C.) to attend one of Antonio Williams’ basketball games.

Williams, a highly regarded wide receiver rated as a top-100 player nationally by multiple outlets, signed with Clemson in December and plans to enroll this summer.

On Wednesday, Grisham also stopped by Greenville (S.C.) High School, which produced a pair of 2022 Clemson signees in offensive lineman Collin Sadler and tight end Josh Sapp.

Like Williams, Sadler and Sapp signed with the Tigers in December. Sadler is already at Clemson as an early enrollee, while Sapp is expected to enroll this summer.

A couple of other prospects from Greenville High on Grisham and Clemson’s radar are 2024 wide receiver Mazeo Bennett and 2023 wide receiver Tyler Brown.

On Wednesday, Grisham was also at Florence (Ala.) High School, where 2023 five-star cornerback Jahlil Hurley attends.

In-state standout WR gives the latest following recent conversation with Grisham

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with an in-state wide receiver prospect.

Greenville (S.C.) 2024 WR Mazeo Bennett spent 15-20 minutes on the phone with Tyler Grisham last week, as the two continue to grow their relationship together.

“Me and Coach Grisham we met at the Clemson game, that was our first time meeting,” Bennett said, “and every time we talk, it’s just like if I talked to him every day. It’s cool conversation. The conversation flows. It’s never a dull moment. We just talk and talk ‘til we gotta get off the phone.”

Bennett couldn’t find words to accurately describe his relationship with Clemson’s wide receivers coach. He used the word “great,” but believes at this point, it’s beyond that.

“His message was to me just keep doing what I’m doing,” Bennett said. “He loves what he’s seeing. The whole staff loves what they’re seeing. They want me. They’re interested in me. He was like “just keep being who I am.”

What does that mean to Bennett?

“It means everything,” he said, “coming from Clemson, that’s a prestigious school. For them to be telling me that they’re really interested in me, means a lot.”

He’s obviously aware of the program’s history of developing wide receivers and is quite fond of a former Clemson standout and current NFL superstar.

“I love watching DeAndre Hopkins,” Bennett said. “I mean, for me, my dream is to go to the NFL, but sometimes to me, every now and again, in the NFL it doesn’t seem like they’re having fun. It just seems like it’s their job.

For me, every time I watch DeAndre Hopkins, it seems like he’s having fun. Everything he does, he wants to be great at it. If you know his story, we’re from the same state. If you know his story and his upbringing, all you can say is ‘Wow.’ So, that’s one player I feel like I actually watch, study and try to be like.”

While Bennett is speedy and explosive, he knows that blocking is a key element of his game as a receiver.

“I’d describe myself as a go-getter, as a dog,” he said. “If you watch my film, the first 2-3 minutes of my film is just straight-up blocking. If you can’t block as a receiver, you are not doing your job. You can’t get the ball 100% of the time.”

Bennett says that he’ll be at Clemson quite a bit this summer. By then, both of his high school teammates — Collin Sadler and Josh Sapp — will officially be enrolled at Clemson.

With that being said, what did he learn from Sapp and Sadler about Clemson as he watched from afar while they underwent their own recruitment process?

“That everything that Clemson does is top-tier from the food to the communication to everything,” he said. “It’s just all top tier.”

A 6-foot, 165-pound sophomore, Bennett has collected early offers from South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia Tech and Coastal Carolina.

Grisham has eye on talented local recruit with Clemson ties

In December, as part of its 2022 recruiting class, Clemson signed a pair of standouts from Greenville (S.C.) High School – tight end Josh Sapp and offensive lineman Collin Sadler.

Another talented prospect from Greenville High that the Tigers have their eye on is Mazeo Bennett, a speedy and explosive wide receiver/defensive back in the 2024 class.

Bennett made his first recruiting visit to Clemson in October for the Florida State game, and while on campus, had the chance to talk with wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham and safeties coach/new co-defensive coordinator Mickey Conn.

Bennett spoke with The Clemson Insider recently and recalled his genuine conversation with Grisham, during which he laid out how Clemson goes about the recruiting process and let Bennett know he is on Grisham’s board for receivers in the 2024 class.

“When I talked with Coach Grisham, he kept it 100 with me,” Bennett said. “Everybody knows Clemson’s tradition in recruitment, and they don’t offer young. Coach Grisham kept that real with me. He explained the whole situation and he told me that there’s not a lot of 2024 guys that are on his board, and he told me that I’m one of them. So, when he said that, that meant something.”

Looking back on his unofficial visit to Clemson, Bennett said the family atmosphere he felt on campus around Grisham and the coaching staff is one of the things that stood out most to him.

“They made everything personal. Everything they say hits you in the heart,” he said. “Talking with Coach Grisham, he made sure that he was not only talking to me, but talking to my pops. My pops was with us in the conversation. We were having a conversation as a family.”

A 6-foot, 165-pound sophomore, Bennett has collected early offers from South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia Tech and Coastal Carolina.

An offer from Clemson in the future would certainly be huge for him, and he would love to have the opportunity to team up with Sapp and Sadler again in college with the Tigers.

“Two of my teammates are (signed) to Clemson, so they tell me everything,” Bennett said. “They love the program obviously and they’re ready to work, and they know the tradition behind Clemson, the family atmosphere, the relationship with God Clemson has, and that’s something that a lot of other schools can’t compete with.”

Rising local athlete ‘enjoyed everything’ about Clemson visit

A local athlete whose stock is on the rise left Clemson highly impressed after his first recruiting trip to Tiger Town two weekends ago.

Greenville High School’s Mazeo Bennett, a speedy and explosive wide receiver/defensive back in the 2024 class, attended the Tigers’ 30-20 victory over Florida State at Death Valley on Oct. 30 as an unofficial visitor.

“I enjoyed everything about the visit!” Bennett told The Clemson Insider. “The fans, and the tradition they are built on is what really stood out to me!”

Through nine games as a sophomore this season, according to MaxPreps, Bennett registered 17 receptions for 450 yards and three touchdowns to go with a couple of interceptions.

Coastal Carolina gave Bennett his first offer in June. South Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia Tech all extended offers last month, while Clemson is another school that has been showing interest in the rising recruit.

Bennett spent time during the visit with receivers coach Tyler Grisham and safeties coach Mickey Conn, as well as defensive coordinator Brent Venables, and Bennett believes the Tigers are looking at him as both a receiver and DB.

“I spoke a lot with Coach Grisham and some with Coach Conn,” Bennett said. “But mainly Coach Grisham was telling me to be patient, and continue to grind! He said they do their due diligence when they are recruiting and that process takes time!”

“I think they are recruiting me as both… I don’t know the specifics,” Bennett added. “But I also talked to Coach Venables.”

Bennett has traveled throughout this season to see games at all the schools that have offered him, along with App State, Notre Dame and Clemson. He has his eye on returning to Clemson for another visit at some point moving forward.

“I definitely wouldn’t mind taking another trip back to Tiger Town,” he said. “I hope to make it to another game or visit back during the offseason.”

Bennett is teammates at Greenville High with two class of 2022 Clemson commits – offensive lineman Collin Sadler and tight end Josh Sapp.

Considering that Bennett is good buddies with both of those future Tigers, and the fact that Clemson is so close to home, an offer from the program would certainly have a big impact on Bennett’s recruitment should he receive an offer down the road.

Right now, though, Bennett is just focused on putting his head down, working hard, and showing the Tigers and other college football programs what he can do as a player.

“I don’t really want to boost my confidence when it comes to getting an offer from Clemson by saying this or saying that… but I know what I can control, which is grinding my butt off day in and day out – for not only Clemson to see but for the whole country!” Bennett said. “An offer from Clemson would weigh heavy, especially with two of my close teammates committed and it being my hometown school!”

Bennett has a tie to the ACC team that Clemson beat last week, as his brother, Zykiesis Cannon, was a defensive back at Louisville from 2014-17.
