2022 British Open: Pace of play of first round is ‘ridiculous,’ ‘insane,’ ‘just sad’

“It’s just a joke, isn’t it?” said reigning U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of his round, which clocked in at 6 hours, 10 minutes.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – With apologies to the USGA’s sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open, the longest day of golf this year was the opening round of the 150th British Open at The Old Course.

“It’s just a joke, isn’t it?” said reigning U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of his round alongside Tiger Woods and Max Homa, which clocked in at 6 hours, 10 minutes. “This just shouldn’t be happening ever in golf.”

Fitzpatrick nailed it, but he also conceded there was little to be done about it, given that with modern equipment seven of the par-4 holes are drivable, and the conditions had most everyone waiting on the tee to swing for the fences, often not even needing a club under a head cover.

“It’s the way the golf course is set up. It’s how firm it is. The way the golf course is designed. You’re crossing over a lot, and to get better angles and better lines, you’ve got to hit across all the fairways,” Fitzpatrick explained. “There’s nothing you can do unfortunately about it. It’s just sad more than anything. It’s just ridiculous.”

The morning wave turned in a brisk 5 hours and 30 minutes, by comparison. In the afternoon, there were some odd moments such as waving up Tiger’s group to tee off at the par-5 14th.

“Wait on the tee for a while and then they said we were going to hit up on them, and they let us drive, so, we hit our drive,” Homa said. “Then when we got up there, we waited 20 minutes for them to hit, which meant we had to wait another 20 after that for us to hit. It was very bizarre.”

Not just bizarre but the snail’s pace prevented players from finding any rhythm.

“I felt like everything was like choppy,” Homa said. “It was just an insane amount of waiting.”

The traffic jam got so bad that Homa’s group actually returned the favor and waved up the group of Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Harold Varner III at the 18th. At that point, were they really saving time? But this happened on several other holes, too, including the fifth, seventh, ninth and 12th.

Rory McIlroy was the most diplomatic when asked about the stop-start nature of the round.

“I think St Andrews is that way,” he said. “There’s a lot of crisscrossing and waiting on other greens and waiting on greens to clear because the drivable par-4s.

So I think, especially the first two days when it’s the full field, it’s to be expected. It is what it is. Thankfully it speeds up over the weekend and two balls, and it gets moving a little bit more. But I think playing this tournament, you expect it to be that way the first couple of days.”

McIlroy, who waited 20 minutes on the fifth tee, sounded like a man in a state of bliss after shooting a 66. The old Tiger-ism ‘It is what it is’ rings hollow in this case; it is what it shouldn’t be. It doesn’t get dark until after 10 o’clock here and there’s no reason for daylight to be an issue. Yet, still players finished in the gloaming in front of abandoned grand stands.

Six hour-plus rounds? That’s both insane and sad, and it needs to be fixed.

As Fitzpatrick put it, it should never happen in golf.

The Open Championship 2022: Best bets, fantasy one-and-done picks, and more

The 150th Open Championship returns to St. Andrews.

Golf is coming home.

For the 30th time in the famed course’s history, the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland will play host to The Open Championship when the 150th edition tees off on Thursday.

It’s the first time the Old Course has been the site of The Open since Zach Johnson won a three-way playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in 2005. The links course is known for its rolling hills, deep pot bunkers and relentless wind gusts that continues to puzzle the world’s best golfers 469 years after play first began there.

A solid portion of The Open field got some good practice in with last week’s Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club about 90 minutes away from St. Andrews. Others, like Tiger Woods, went straight to the Old Course to get some practice rounds in.

Here’s a run down of the best bets, odds and predictions before the final major of the season tees off.

Max Homa had a perfect tweet about playing with Tiger Woods at The Open and golf fans loved it

This is just the best.

Max Homa, like many young golfers, grew up idolizing Tiger Woods. In 2013 after winning the NCAA title he fired off a tweet to the GOAT asking if he could play a practice round with him at the upcoming U.S. Open.

That never came to fruition and Homa, who has now won four times on the PGA Tour, has still never played a round with Tiger.

Well, that’s going to change in an amazing way this week as he’ll be playing the first and second round of the 150th Open Championship at the Old Course in St. Andrews with Tiger freaking Woods.

How cool is that?

Homa, who’s easily one of the nicest people in professional sports, had the perfect tweet after getting that news:

Homa is just the best.

Here’s his tweet from 2013:

Homa has built a huge following on social media by just being himself while having lots of fun with his fans and breaking down their swings in hilarious videos.

Twitter was rightfully so happy for him:

‘Any chance I can get a practice round?’: Nine years after asking to play on Twitter, Max Homa is paired with Tiger Woods at 2022 British Open

Good luck getting the ball on the tee Thursday, Max.

Every once in a while, old tweets resurface. Sometimes they’re bad takes, sometimes they’re miraculous predictions that somehow come true, and sometimes they’re heartwarming things like this.

In 2013, Max Homa, a then collegiate golfer at Cal, sent out a tweet asking Tiger Woods for a practice round at that year’s U.S. Open (Homa qualified for the event at Merion).

Like many professional golfers in this era, Woods was Homa’s hero.

Fast forward to 2021 and the California native took home the hardware at the Genesis Invitational, an event hosted by Woods and his foundation. So, after receiving the trophy, Homa took a picture with the 15-time major champion to mark the victory.

Now, 507 days later, it was announced the four-time Tour winner will tee it up with Woods and Matthew Fitzpatrick for the first two rounds at the Old Course for the 150th Open Championship.

The threesome with tee off at 9:59 a.m. ET on Thursday and 4:59 a.m. ET on Friday.

Homa was asked about the dream pairing: “Unreal times a million.”

In 2018, the then Korn Ferry Tour player went on the No Laying Up podcast and discussed the 2013 tweet.

Max Homa’s date with Tiger Woods in the first two rounds of the The Open is the best

A Tiger Woods superfan is about to live his dream at St. Andrews.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The pairings for the first two rounds of 150th Open Championship came out this morning and there was one big winner in the list of tee times – Max Homa.

If you’re a golf fan then it’s likely that you know Homa’s story. His climb to the PGA Tour was a rough one full of missed cuts and self doubts. This 4-minute video of Homa talking about his battles through those tough times is what made me become a fan of his starting back in 2019. Take a few minutes to watch it if you want to be inspired today.

The 31 year old from California fought through those rough times and is now a four-time winner on the PGA Tour and is currently ranked No. 19th in the world.

Hardcore golf fans have come to love Homa because of his fun breakdowns of golf swings that people send him on Twitter and just because he’s a really nice guy who oozes positivity and is quick to poke fun of himself and not take things too seriously – like the time he roasted himself after his rough final round at the 2022 Masters.

If you’re not a huge golf fan then Homa is any easy guy to root for because he’s just a good dude with good intentions who loves the game just like all of weekend hackers do. He’s one of us. He’s just a whole lot better than us.

Over the past few years he’s made it known that he grew up a gigantic fan of Tiger Woods and he was besides himself in 2021 when Tiger Woods handed him the trophy for winning a PGA Tour event at famed Riviera Country Club in Homa’s hometown of Los Angeles. He then could barely talk when Tiger hung around and talked to him once all the cameras were gone.

A few years ago while on the No Laying Up podcast he made jokes about maybe asking Tiger to play in a practice round at the Masters, fearing that Tiger wouldn’t know who he was and that the opportunity was just a pipe dream that was fun to joke about with friends but would never happen.

Also, there was this awesome tweet he sent to Tiger in 2013.

Well, I can’t imagine how Homa is feeling right now because this morning he found out he’ll be playing the first two rounds with… Tiger Woods. At the 150th Open Championship. At St. Andrews.

My. Goodness.

I just got goosebumps writing that. Homa, meanwhile, must be moonwalking around the practice green or throwing up in a bathroom because this is just some unbelievable news for a guy who deserves to live this dream.

Homa and Tiger will be joined by U.S. Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick and they’ll be going off Thursday at 9:59 a.m. ET and Friday at 4:58 a.m. ET.

This is a win for the good guys. A win for the everyman golfer who has become beloved by so many fans just because he’s so comfortable being in his own skin and even more comfortable in sharing all of his emotions – the good and the bad – that have come with his journey.

Homa might not win a trophy this week at St. Andrews but he’s going to experience something that could be even cooler than that – spending 36 holes with his idol in one of the most special major championships in our lifetime while playing at the home of golf.

Have yourself a week, Max Homa!

Xander Schauffele’s hot streak, Jordan Spieth’s hole out among five takeaways from third round of Scottish Open

Here are five takeaways from the third round, starting with one of the hottest golfers on the planet.

Moving day held true to its mantra Saturday at Renaissance Club.

Another breezy day during the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open saw plenty of changes on the leaderboard.

Max Homa, who after playing his second round Friday went and played 18 holes at North Berwick, tied the low round of the day with a 4-under 66 to move to 2 under for the tournament. He sits tied for ninth.

Jordan Smith, who made an ace Friday and won cars for he and his caddie, hit another shot to one foot on the same hole, the 17th. He is tied for third heading to Sunday.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The U.S. Open has a reputation as the toughest test in golf, and this week at The Country Club outside Boston, that reputation will be further solidified. The rough is thick, the greens are fast and players rarely will have a flat, even lie in the fairway. It promises to be a brutal test.

A player’s game has to be razor sharp if he hopes to be in contention Sunday, and every piece of equipment has to be dialed in as well. Golfweek’s David Dusek is at The Country Club and has spent his days in the practice area and on the range. Here are some of the interesting equipment photos he has taken this week.

Have $100? Here’s how you should bet it at the U.S. Open

Looking to make some bets this week? Here’s how we’d suggest betting $100.

BROOKLINE, MA. — The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, is playing host to the 122nd U.S. Open just outside of Boston this week, and as the tournament approaches, bettors across the country will be narrowing in on their picks to win the third men’s major of the season.

Last week’s winner Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite at +1000, followed closely by his good buddy Justin Thomas at +1200. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who’s bounced back nicely since his missed cut at the PGA Championship, is next in line with Jon Rahm at +1300.

If you’re looking to make some bets this week, here’s how I’d bet $100.

Blonde Koepka or brunette Koepka? Max Homa is still weighing in on important matters

A frustrated Homa is not a funny Homa, which is a downer for the social media mavens.

Max Homa double-bogeyed his next-to-last hole during the first round of the Memorial Tournament, which was not what his 400K Twitter followers wanted to see.

A frustrated Homa is not a funny Homa, which is a downer for the social media mavens for whom the 31-year-old Californian is a big reason they pay closer attention to the PGA Tour. To them, Homa is the best thing going in golf, so when he is not tweeting – and many hours of social media silence followed his Thursday finish – they are left not hanging on every word.

Many golfers in the cracking-sound-in-the-knees age bracket do not relate to Twitter. And many among the younger crowd who sleep with their phones still detest the social media site, which can be a vehicle for venom-spewing hate. Fair enough. But millions enjoy following their favorite athletes and celebrities, and consider it a bonus if the athlete/celeb interacts.

Homa engages his audience like few other upper echelon Tour players — he is 28th in the world rankings and has four Tour wins. He not just types his thoughts but responds to replies sent to @maxhoma23. And his snarky comments, frequently covering inane Q&A topics, often are comedy gold.

A sampling:

“Why are all the photos of Sasquatch blurry when every cellphone has a fantastic camera?” a follower asked.

“Because people who are actively looking to photograph Sasquatch don’t have time to buy a new phone. It’s a full-time job,” Homa answered.

“What are baby names you or your wife vetoed immediately,” asked a follower named Jeremy.

“Jeremy,” Homa shot back.

Switching to golf topics …

“Blonde Koepka or brunette Koepka?” a follower wondered.

“Blonde.”

Max Homa watches his second shot on the 7th hole during Round 1 of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio on June 2, 2022.

Pga 1st Memorial Tournament

And queried whether he would rather fight 1,000 tiny Francesco Molinaris or one giant Jason Kokrak, Homa did not hesitate: “1,000 Franecscos. Kokrak would squish me in his normal size.”

More famously, Homa has critiqued the swings of amateur golfers who send him their good, bad, and brutal wind-ups and follow-throughs.

Among my favorites, one masochistic follower tweeted Homa instructions to analyze his swing and “Destroy my ego, pls,” to which the pro quipped, “I’m honestly just impressed u have an ego.”

I caught up with Homa after his respectable opening round, 3-under-par 69 that could have been a leaderboard topping 5-under except for the double bogey at No. 8. (He played the back nine first.) I wanted to know what prompted him to engage so actively on Twitter.

His responses were surprising, if mostly because they lacked the hilarity of his online persona. Instead, his musings were steeped in humility and humanity.

“In 2022 it’s just a part of life,” he said of social media. “Parts of it I like, parts of it I don’t, but that’s like anything in the world. I like interactions; Twitter can be really funny, especially when something crazy happens, like Will Smith slap night. But other times, like gun debates and politics talk, not great.”

Homa avoids diving into more controversial issues, explaining, “I’m a golfer. I don’t think it’s my duty to insert my political or social feelings into the world.”

On that point, he hopes his status as one of the top rising players on the planet — he has won twice this season — does not mean he is becoming a world-class influencer.

“I’d like to think my opinions wouldn’t change other people’s opinions regardless of what world ranking I have, but the last three years I’ve been playing some pretty good golf, so the following gets a little bit bigger,” he said.

More than anything, Homa appreciates how obsessed his followers are with their golf games, to the point of risking ridicule.

Max Homa talks with his caddie Joe Greiner, who sports his always respectable beard on the 17th green during the first day of the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club on March 23, 2022, in Austin, Texas. Homa has four career PGA Tour victories, three top-10 finishes this season, and more than 400,000 followers on Twitter. (Photo by Chuck Burton/Getty Images)

“It’s cool to see how popular golf is and how much people enjoy it from all walks of life,” he said.

It’s also cool that a Tour player takes time to connect with the public in a way that both tickles and cuts to the funny bone. Some athletes are so worried about ruining their image they lock their personalities in a bank vault, where it stays safe with their millions.

Homa is not afraid to appear human, even sharing photos of himself practicing one of his hobbies: bourbon. (He has a multi-year sponsorship deal with Elijah Craig.)

“Got to try some @Elijah_Craig Bourbon straight from the barrel using a whiskey thief – which ironically was my nickname during my Korn Ferry Tour days,” he tweeted, adding another post that explained, “I’m typically a Toasted Barrel over one ice cube kinda guy. All class, obviously.”

I’ll give the last word to one of Homa’s followers, who tweeted, “You’re quickly moving up the list of greatest Jewish athletes. My parents gave me a book for Hanukkah in 1977 highlighting guys like Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg. Page 3 was Bobby Fischer, and I was like ‘the 3rd greatest Jewish athlete is a chess player? Keep it going Max!”

Keep it going, indeed.
