Giants suddenly have quality and volume along offensive line

The New York Giants entered the offseason in desperate need of offensive linemen and now have both quality and depth.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen knew coming in the door this past winter that he had a lot of work ahead of him when it came to the offensive line.

Several months and nearly a dozen personnel moves later, Schoen has addressed the Giants’ most glaring issue with both quantity and quality. The team now has loads of options along the offensive line and it should be markedly improved in 2022.

The process began with just one spot on the line chiseled in stone — left tackle — where former first round pick Andrew Thomas has developed into an asset. The other four spots were wide open after the team shed themselves of some underachieving players, while others remain on the outside looking in as they rehab from injuries.

The Giants’ depth chart was scant: Shane Lemieux, Nick Gates, Matt Peart, Ben Bredeson, Wes Martin, Korey Cunningham and Devery Hamilton.

Lemieux, Gates and Peart are all still in the throes of coming back from serious injuries. The others were brought in as replacements on the fly.

Schoen went out shopping in the low rent district and managed to pull in veteran free agents Mark Glowinski, Max Garcia, Jamil Douglas, Matt Gono and Jon Feliciano. Then, he signed the massive Roy Mbaeteka out of the NFL’s international program.

Right there he could have stopped. They could make a serviceable line out of those players but Schoen still had the draft head of him.

In the draft, Schoen got an early Christmas present when Alabama tackle Evan Neal fell into his lap at No. 7 overall on Thursday night. Neal will start Day 1 at right tackle and gives the Giants an enviable pair of bookends along with Thomas.

Later in the draft, Schoen added two North Carolina linemen in Joshua Ezeudu and Marcus McKethan. Ezeudu is noted for his versatility at both guard and tackle and McKethan is a 6-foot-7, 340-pound guard who just overwhelms defenders with his size and strength.

Now comes the hard part. Getting a starting five out of all of this volume. We know Thomas and Neal will be the tackles but who will be the other seven (or eight) who will fill out the roster.

“We’ll see once we get pads on and things like that,” head coach Brian Daboll said after the draft. “I know the guys are hard working. They are smart. They show some toughness when you watch them on tape. The people that we’ve had in the building are dependable. It’s been good to go into meetings with (offensive line coaches) Bobby (Johnson) and Tony (Sparano) and those guys. They are eager.

“Again, let’s not make it more than it is. Your job is to protect the inside part of the pocket and the width of the pocket and get moving in the running game, but that position you need five guys operating as one unit. And that is what will be really important.

“You’ll see. I know I will get a lot of questions on it once we get out in OTAs, and I’ll tell you right now, there are going to be a lot of guys mixing and matching. You can write the lineup down each day, but it’s going to change from day to day.”

With Gates’ future still uncertain, the Giants will use Feliciano at center. Glowinski was inked to a three-year deal so we expect him to be one of the starting guards. The other guard position is wide open. You can expect Lemieux, if healthy, to get a shot as well as Garcia and Douglas. You can add Ezeudu to that mix as well.

It is a refreshing change for the Giants now that their weakest unit has been turned into a major strength.

OL Max Garcia signs one-year deal with Giants

Garcia spent the last three seasons with the Cardinals and started 11 games at right guard and center in 2021.

The Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants essentially make a swap of guards in free agency. The Cardinals signed former Giant Will Hernandez to a one-year contract and now Max Garcia, who spent the last three seasons with the Cardinals, signed a one-year deal with the Giants.

Garcia is playing on a one-year contract for the fourth consecutive year.

He signed with the Cardinals in 2019 after four seasons with the Denver Broncos. Last season, he appeared in 15 games, starting 11 at right guard and center. He was a Pro Bowl alternate.

In three seasons for the Cardinals, he appeared in 36 games, starting 11, all last season.

Report: Giants to sign OL Max Garcia

The New York Giants are expected to sign offensive lineman Max Garcia, who was a Pro Bowl alternate last season.

The New York Giants have reportedly come to terms with veteran offensive lineman Max Garcia.

Garcia, 30, has played both guard positions over his seven-year career which began in Denver with the Broncos in 2015. Garcia was a fourth-round pick (No. 133 overall) by the Broncos in the 2015 NFL draft and played in all 16 games that season (starting five) for Denver’s Super Bowl 50 championship team.

Garcia played 57 games over four seasons (starting 41) for the Broncos before moving on to Arizona in 2019. He played in 29 games the last two years for the Cardinals, including 11 starts last season when he was named a Pro Bowl alternate.

This is likely a depth signing for the Giants, who have been adding interior lineman the past few weeks such as Mark Glowinski, Jon Feliciano and Jamil Douglas to go with incumbents Shane Lemieux and Ben Bredeson.

Cardinals anticipate return of either Justin Pugh, Max Garcia vs. Seahawks

The offensive line could get one or two starters back in Week 11.

The Arizona Cardinals have dealt with a number of injuries on the offensive line, as only D.J. Humphries and Josh Jones have not missed a game among the starters. They were without both Justin Pugh and Max Garcia on Sunday when they lost to the Carolina Panthers.

Kliff Kingsbury anticipates the return of at least one of the two.

“They do (have a chance of playing this week),” he told reporters Monday. “Both guys progressed nicely last week and I’m hoping we can at least have one of them back by Sunday.”

According to Wednesday’s injury report, Pugh did not practice Wednesday but Max Garcia was able to get limited reps. Neither practiced at all last week, but Garcia appeared to be closer, as he was listed on the final injury report as questionable despite not practicing.

Cardinals suffer more injuries in win over 49ers

Chase Edmonds, Justin Pugh, Max Garcia and Aaron Brewer all were unable to finish the game Sunday against the 49ers.

The Arizona Cardinals were able to come away with their eighth win of the season on Sunday, their fifth win on the road, their third in the division and complete the season sweep of the San Francisco 49ers.

They defeated the Niners 31-17 while playing shorthanded, but they also suffered more injuries.

Already missing quarterback Kyler Murray, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and defensive end J.J. Watt with injuries and receiver A.J. Green out after testing positive for COVID-19, the Cardinals had at least four other players go down with injuries against the 49ers.

OL Max Garcia’s contract with Cardinals has little in guarantees

His only guarantees are a $68,750 signing bonus and a $68,750 roster bonus he gets only if he is on the roster in Week 1.

One of the many of their own free agents the Arizona Cardinals re-signed was veteran offensive lineman Max Garcia. He agreed to a one-year contract for the third straight offseason.

His contract is for the league minimum, qualifies for a veteran exemption against the salary cap and has very little in the way of guarantees.

According to Spotrac, he gets a signing bonus of $68,750. His salary is $990,000, the minimum for a player with between 4-6 credited seasons in the league. If he makes the Week 1 roster, he will get a roster bonus of $68,750. None of his salary is guaranteed, so if he does not make the team, his deal will only count the amount of his signing bonus in dead money.

Although his contract will pay him more than $1.12 million this year if he makes the team, because of the veteran exemption, his cap hit will be only $987,500, a savings of $140,000 against the cap/

Garcia appeared in 14 games last season, playing mostly on the line for special teams. He had 69 offensive snaps on the season.

Cardinals bring back veteran OL Max Garcia

Garcia gets a one-year deal with Arizona for the third straight offseason.

The Arizona Cardinals announced two roster moves on Monday morning on the offensive line. One was the return of Max Garcia.

He returns to the Cardinals for a third season, agreeing to a one-year deal for 2021.

It is the third offseason in a row he gets a one-year contract from the Cardinals.

He signed in 2019 after four seasons with the Denver Broncos, where he started 41 games.

He was recovering from a torn ACL when he joined the Cardinals in 2019 and, after coming off the physically unable to perform list, he appeared in seven games off the bench. He appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals in 2020, playing 69 offensive snaps.

He plays guard and center, giving Arizona veteran depth. His addition would seem to suggest the team will either trade or release Mason Cole at some point.

Cole, who was the team’s starting center last season, will be replaced by Rodney Hudson, for whom the Cardinals traded last week. If Garcia is back, Cole’s spot on the roster, especially when he is due to earn more than $2 million this season, makes him expendable.

2020 Cardinals player grades: Interior offensive line

A look at the performance of every lineman who got any playing time at guard or center last season.

The Arizona Cardinals went through many ups and downs last season, and at their peak looked like one of the most formidable teams in the league. To get to where they were this season just two years removed from having the worst record in the NFL, they had to go through a lot of roster turnover.

In the sixth part of this series, we will be looking back at each interior offensive lineman who recorded a snap for Arizona this season and grade their performance.

Cardinals free agent outlook: OL Max Garcia

Will the veteran backup return in 2021?

One of the Arizona Cardinals’ many unrestricted free agents this offseason is offensive lineman Max Garcia. Will he be back in 2021?

Garcia has spent two years with the Cardinals, both on one-year contracts. He spent half the 2019 season recovering from a torn ACL.

This past season, he appeared in 14 games, starting none. He played 69 snaps on offense, coming in to replace injured players. He was a backup and played on special teams.

Garcia is a veteran on the bench and has been with offensive line coach and run game coordinator Sean Kugler dating back to his days with the Denver Broncos.

He gives the Cardinals depth with starting experience, having 41 career starts. Whether it is him or another type of player, he is someone the Cardinals need on the roster.

He has the versatility to play all three interior guard positions.

He won’t cost a lot.

He knows his position coach and what to expect. He knows the offense. He has started in the league. It seems like a match.

If it isn’t Garcia, the Cardinals will sign someone like him.

Garcia’s potential 2021 return: quite possible
