Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted Max Fried in the butt with a line drive

Ouch! That’s got to hurt.

The Atlanta Braves were fighting for their 2024 season on Wednesday night in San Diego against the Padres.

Pitcher Max Fried quite literally took one for the team during the MLB playoff elimination game, as Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. accidentally hit a line drive right into Fried’s backside.

It’s hard to tell exactly where Tatis accidentally hit Fried’s posterior region, whether it was right on the butt or on his hip. However, it sure didn’t look pleasant.

It was a solid hit by Tatis, but equal kudos to Fried for hanging in there after getting accidentally blasted in the buttocks region.

That’s playoff baseball for you!

MLB fans were furious after Max Fried’s clear strike was called a ball during Braves-Phillies

How was this called a ball and not a strike?!

The Atlanta Braves suffered one of the more maddening missed calls on a pitch you’ll see in a MLB game this season.

As he was pitching against Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos on Saturday in the bottom of the first inning, Braves ace Max Fried threw a clean pitch right into the middle of the strike zone that should’ve sent Castellanos to the bench and concluded the inning for Philly.

However, the umpire somehow called it a ball instead of a strike and left Castellanos at the plate to eventually give the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the first, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.

There are always debatable calls in baseball when it comes to the strike zone, but this is a bizarre whiff for the umpire that absolutely sets a sour tone for how balls and strikes will be called this year.

The Braves got the lead back in the second inning, but the team is still likely furious this Fried strike pitch didn’t count as it should’ve. They say winning is the best medicine, but this one will sting for a bit either way.

MLB fans did not like this call one bit.

Braves pitcher Max Fried appeared to be tipping his pitches to the Astros during Game 2

That could explain Max Fried’s recent struggles.

While the Atlanta Braves failed to close out the World Series at home with Sunday’s Game 5 loss, they head to Houston with their top (healthy) pitchers — Max Fried and Ian Anderson — ready to go on normal rest. And all eyes will be on Fried for Tuesday’s Game 6, particularly after his rough outings in the NLCS and World Series Game 2.

But one former Braves player thinks he and the team both spotted the problem: Fried was tipping his pitches.

No matter the level of baseball, teams are always looking for a tell from the opposing pitchers. After all — as the Astros know all too well — it makes baseball a whole lot easier when you have an idea of what pitch is coming. This isn’t sign-stealing, though. It’s a mechanical mistake from the pitcher, and even the slightest deviation from a pitcher’s normal mechanics can be enough to tip off an offense.

During Game 2, former Braves player Matt Diaz noticed that Fried was slightly wiggling his glove from the stretch before throwing an off-speed pitch.

The Braves are coming off a successful year after winning the NL East Division title and will look to continue that momentum this season. As for the Phillies, they will need some more production out of one of baseball’s highest-paid players, Bryce Harper. Last year was another struggle, finishing below .500 for the 9th straight season.

MLB players and coaches will be wearing these awesome official on-field face coverings throughout the 2021 season.

Today, the Marlins are hoping for a better showing while they send Pablo Lopez to the mound.  The Braves will counter with Ian Anderson, he’ll be looking to shut down the Marlins offense early and often.

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Atlanta Braves at New York Mets sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Atlanta Braves visit the New York Mets in Game 2 of a three-game set at Citi Field Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET. We analyze the Braves-Mets MLB betting odds and lines, with betting picks and best bets around the matchup.

Friday: The Mets took the opener 1-0, the lone run on DH Yoenis Cespedes‘ 7th-inning homer. Unfortunately, I lost my Braves (+155) underdog pick, but don’t regret making it – Atlanta’s Mike Soroka tossed 6 scoreless innings and New York’s ace Jacob deGrom was out of the game after 5 innings. The Braves just couldn’t manufacture any runs, finishing with 3 hits.

Now to Saturday …

Braves at Mets: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Max Fried vs. LHP Steven Matz

Fried in 2019: 17-6, 4.02 ERA in 33 games (30 starts) and 165 2/3 innings

  • 2019 vs. Mets: 2-0, 3.86 ERA (11 ER, 25 2/3 IP) in 5 games (4 starts)
  • Career vs. Mets: 2-1, 2.93 ER (13 ER, 40 IP) in 11 games (6 starts)

Matz in 2019: 11-10, 4.21 ERA in 32 games (30 starts)

  • 2019 vs. Braves: 2-2, 3.19 ERA (11 ER, 31 IP) in 6 starts
  • Career vs. Braves: 6-2, 2.94 ERA (23 ER, 70 1/3 IP) in 13 starts

Prediction

Braves 4, Mets 2

Moneyline (ML)

ATLANTA (-112) is the STRONGEST PLAY. Look for Fried, who led all National League left-handers with 17 wins in 2019, to get the Braves in the win column. He’s been pretty tough on the Mets (+100) since his MLB debut in 2017, and there’s no reason to believe that doesn’t continue Saturday.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on Atlanta will return a profit of $8.93 – or every $1.12 bet on Atlanta will profit $1 with a W.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. The Braves’ -1.5 (+135) is tempting, but let’s just settle for the moneyline win. The Mets are +1.5 (-162).

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 9 (-110). Friday’s stud aces put both offenses in a funk. I don’t see the bats waking up in Game 2.
