Braves at Mets: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Sean Newcomb vs. RHP Rick Porcello

Newcomb (2019): 6-3, 3.16 ERA, 65 K, 29 BB in 68 1/3 innings.

  • Newcomb is back in the starting rotation for the Braves after making 51 relief appearances in 2019. He started 49 games in 2017-2018.
  • No one in the projected Mets lineup has ever homered off of Newcomb.

Porcello (2019): 14-12, 5.52 ERA, 143 K, 45 BB

  • Porcello makes his Mets and National League debut, having spent his entire 11-year career in the American League, pitching the last five seasons for the Boston Red Sox.
  • Only one Braves hitter, 2B Adeiny Hechavarria, has more than 10 at-bats against Porcello and he bats .190 against him with one home run and one RBI.

Prediction

Mets 5, Braves 3

Moneyline (ML)

After a split of the first two games, the Mets are slight home favorites at -112. The Mets went 48-33 at home last season and have the more experienced starter on the mound. Take the METS to win at -112.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Mets will win you $8.93 in profit.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Despite being the underdog on the money line, the Braves are favored against the run line at -1.5 (+145). They have covered both games of the series so far but were very even against the spread a year ago at 85-82, including the postseason.

This is an interesting case where the Mets are the money line favorite but the run line underdog. Clearly, if you think the Mets will win this one outright, you have to take the METS +1.5 (-176), but the moneyline is a much more profitable play.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 10 runs for Sunday’s contest. Both games of the series have gone Under. We expect the same Sunday. Take the UNDER 10 (-110).

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Atlanta Braves at New York Mets sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Atlanta Braves visit the New York Mets in Game 2 of a three-game set at Citi Field Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET. We analyze the Braves-Mets MLB betting odds and lines, with betting picks and best bets around the matchup.

Friday: The Mets took the opener 1-0, the lone run on DH Yoenis Cespedes‘ 7th-inning homer. Unfortunately, I lost my Braves (+155) underdog pick, but don’t regret making it – Atlanta’s Mike Soroka tossed 6 scoreless innings and New York’s ace Jacob deGrom was out of the game after 5 innings. The Braves just couldn’t manufacture any runs, finishing with 3 hits.

Now to Saturday …

Braves at Mets: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Max Fried vs. LHP Steven Matz

Fried in 2019: 17-6, 4.02 ERA in 33 games (30 starts) and 165 2/3 innings

  • 2019 vs. Mets: 2-0, 3.86 ERA (11 ER, 25 2/3 IP) in 5 games (4 starts)
  • Career vs. Mets: 2-1, 2.93 ER (13 ER, 40 IP) in 11 games (6 starts)

Matz in 2019: 11-10, 4.21 ERA in 32 games (30 starts)

  • 2019 vs. Braves: 2-2, 3.19 ERA (11 ER, 31 IP) in 6 starts
  • Career vs. Braves: 6-2, 2.94 ERA (23 ER, 70 1/3 IP) in 13 starts

Prediction

Braves 4, Mets 2

Moneyline (ML)

ATLANTA (-112) is the STRONGEST PLAY. Look for Fried, who led all National League left-handers with 17 wins in 2019, to get the Braves in the win column. He’s been pretty tough on the Mets (+100) since his MLB debut in 2017, and there’s no reason to believe that doesn’t continue Saturday.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on Atlanta will return a profit of $8.93 – or every $1.12 bet on Atlanta will profit $1 with a W.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. The Braves’ -1.5 (+135) is tempting, but let’s just settle for the moneyline win. The Mets are +1.5 (-162).

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 9 (-110). Friday’s stud aces put both offenses in a funk. I don’t see the bats waking up in Game 2.

Prediction

Braves 5, Mets 3

Moneyline (ML)

ATLANTA (+125) is the STRONGEST PLAY vs. New York (-139). The Braves did lose their last three games of the 2019 regular season at Citi Field, but they had the luxury of resting with an NL East title already clinched. On their previous NYC trip in late August – when games mattered – they swept the Mets in a three-game set. They even managed to win a game that deGrom struck out 13 and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings.

It should be noted that the Mets own the majors’ best all-time Opening Day winning percentage (.655), have won their last three openers and are 38-12 in their last 50.

BUT deGrom is likely limited to an 85-pitch count due to back stiffness suffered near the end of camp. AND Soroka is a road warrior – he was 7-1 with a 1.55 ERA across 16 road starts last season. BET THE BRAVES!

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on Atlanta will return a profit of $12.50 – or in other words, every $1 bet on Atlanta will profit $1.25 if it wins.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

AVOID. The Braves’ +1.5 (-189) is a bit steep, while the Mets’ -1.5 (+155) offers decent value, but again, we’re counting on an Atlanta W.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 7 (-110) is worth a small wager. Offenses should be ahead of pitching early in the start of this new shortened season. Plus, NL teams will have the benefit of designated hitters in their lineups this year. If the O/U climbs to 7.5 or higher though, take a PASS.
