Mattress Mack laid a $4.5 million Super Bowl jinx on the Cincinnati Bengals

Mattress Mack’s losing streak vs. Joe Burrow: who’ve ya got?

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is one of the world’s most prolific sports bettors. Over the past five months, he’s also one of the worst.

Mack’s seven-figure bets have made repeated headlines over the past few years. Lately, he’s been wrong on all of them. There was $3.6 million riding on the Astros in the 2021 World Series. He threw down more than $6 million on Alabama to win the 2022 College Football Playoff. He dropped more than $2 million on a New England Patriots futures Super Bow bet, only to see that evaporate at the hands of Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

This all bodes very poorly for the Cincinnati Bengals. McIngvale opted to place a $4.5 million wager on the AFC’s representative to win straight-up at Super Bowl 56 as a 4.5-point underdog.

If it hits, he’ll win more than $7.7 million. If he loses, he can write it off as a promotional expense.

The Texas-based bedroom accessory magnate has made a name for himself as one of America’s most prolific gamblers because he’s found a way fold his gambling into the chain of furniture stores he owns. If his wager hits, he’ll refund his customers’ recent purchases of at least $3,000. If it doesn’t, he’s out his pocket money … but up however much in sales from anyone who jumped at his promotion.

Lately, Mack’s customers have gone on a cold streak with nothing but pressed-board nightstands and Sleep Number mattresses to show for it. If Joe Burrow can come through one more time, however, their bedroom sets will be free — after a little paperwork.

‘Mattress Mack’ missed out on $35 million thanks to the Atlanta Braves winning the World Series

Don’t worry, he still earned plenty of cash from the Astros’ playoff run.

Houston retail magnate Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is on a rather rough losing streak.

After losing a $1 million bet on the Houston Cougars to win the men’s basketball national championship last April, he was at it again with a $2.4 million wager on Essential Quality to win the Kentucky Derby. That one also missed.

On Tuesday night, as his hometown Houston Astros lost the World Series to the Atlanta Braves in six games, Mack waved goodbye to another $3.25 million. That total was a combination of wagers placed at multiple sportsbooks, including a $2 million ticket at William Hill with a payout of $22 million — which would’ve been a U.S. record if it hit. Had the Astros been able to pull off a comeback and win the series in seven games, Mack would’ve earned a combined $35.6 million.

He just wouldn’t have been able to keep the majority of it.

Mack is able to place such massive bets because of a promotion he runs at his regional stores. Typically the way it works involves Mack offering a full refund to anyone who spends $3,000 or more at his stores if the team he bets on wins. Mack then uses the payouts from his successful bets to cover the cost of the refund — and still walks away with a large chunk of cash.

Which is why his decision not hedge his bets looms particularly large today.

The 70-year-old previously told The Action Network he would have to payout $20 million in refunds if the Astros won the World Series this year. That would’ve left him with more than $15 million in profit from his wagers.

If there’s anything we know for certain about Mack, the loss won’t stop him from trying again. After all, his most recent major victory came from betting $3.46 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win the Super Bowl last year. And the NFL playoffs are right around the corner.

Mattress Mack is about to bet so much money on the Kentucky Derby

He’s back and spending tons of money.

Furniture store owner Jim McIngvale — that’s “Mattress Mack” to you — has bet huge sums on so many big sports events.

There was the $13 million loss he took on the Houston Astros (but that was a hedge bet that worked out in his favor after he said if the Astros won, he’d refund a lot of money to customers), and he threw down $3.46 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3.5 in the Super Bowl, which definitely worked out.

Per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he’s going to bet A TON on Essential Quality, the presumed favorite to win the 2021 Kentucky Derby. How much are we talking here? Here’s the quote:

McIngvale, 70, said he’ll wager “$2 million plus, maybe $3 million, maybe $4 million” on Essential Quality, the 5-2 favorite, to win the first leg of horse racing’s triple crown. …

“The favorite has won six of the last seven Kentucky Derbies run on the first Saturday in May. So the customers have an 85 percent chance of winning,” Mack said. “My dilemma as a gambler is how to feed money into the pari-mutuel pool without killing the odds.”

That’s right, Mattress Mack himself could be responsible for moving the odds on a horse. That’s what happens when you bet absurd amounts of money!

Furniture store owner ‘Mattress Mack’ is betting so much Super Bowl money on the Buccaneers

Here we go again!

Furniture store owner Jim McIngvale — better known to the world as “Mattress Mack” — has made headlines for the humongous bets he’s made on sports … as well as the money he’s lost.

He ended up losing “more than $13 million” in 2019 betting on the Houston Astros, although that hedged against the possibilities of refunding so many purchases from his furniture stores if the Stros had won the World Series.

He also said last year that he wanted to bet $1 million on the Tennessee Titans against the Kansas City Chiefs.

I guess he’s got something about betting against the Chiefs, because this year, he flew to Colorado to put $3.46 MILLION (!!!!) on the Bucs to cover a 3.5-point spread against the Chiefs.

From DraftKings, here was his thinking:

“Tampa Bay is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and led by the greatest football player of all time in Tom Brady, so I’m betting big on the Bucs who have overcome tough matchups throughout this postseason. The NFL has only seen eight instances of back-to-back champions and none in the past 16 years, so I like my chances going into Super Bowl LV for this trend to continue.

I don’t think it’s the worst of bets. That extra half-point helps if the Chiefs win by a field goal. But can’t he just throw down, like, $500,000 instead?

Interestingly enough, someone else bet $2.3 million on that same Bucs spread. So maybe there’s something these two know that we don’t.

Mattress Mack loses $1 million betting against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV

Mattress Mack, Kansas City Chiefs, betting, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl LIV, Houston

It isn’t often that Mattress Mack takes an L, but he took one to the tune of $1 million on Sunday evening when the Kansas City Chiefs executed a 31-20 comeback against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium.

James Franklin McIngvale, who operates the Gallery Furniture stores and goes by the furniture themed cognomen, placed a bet on the Niners to win the Super Bowl. Who knows why Mattress Mack went against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs? One would think the way the Chiefs whipped up on the Houston Texans 51-31 in the AFC divisional and the Tennessee Titans 35-24 in the AFC Championship Game that Mattress Mack would have sided Kansas City.

It isn’t the only fortune that Mattress Mack has lost in the last year. As any true Houstonian would, McIngvale bet $13 million on the Houston Astros to win the World Series against the Washington Nationals. Even though the Astros lost the series 4-3, McIngvale said he would do it again.

Of course, part of Mattress Mack’s bets are promotions for Gallery Furniture. If the 49ers would have won, then any customer who bought $3,000 or more Gallery Furniture or Tempur-Pedic mattresses would have received 50$ of their money back or 100% back in in-store credit.

That means it wasn’t just Mattress Mack betting on the Niners. If any of his customers were in the market for a new mattress and they spent thousands, and if San Francisco won, they would get a discount. If the customers were wrong, then they paid full price for their mattresses.

Nonetheless, Texans fans would love to see Mattress Mack place a bet on their NFL team in the Super Bowl someday. No Houston pro football team has won their league championship since the Oilers in 1961 when they defeated the San Diego Chargers 10-3. The Oilers would have made it a three-peat, but the Dallas Texans beat them in double overtime at Jeppesen Stadium. Those Texans turned out to be the Chiefs who beat the 49ers Sunday night.

Astros superfan Mattress Mack wants to bet $1 million on the Titans to beat the Chiefs

An Astros fan who lost millions betting on the 2019 World Series is looking to make another major wager.

You may remember Houston-area furniture store icon ‘Mattress Mack’ from the 2019 World Series, when he lost in excess of $13 million betting on the Astros to beat the Washington Nationals. Jim McIngvale has been making massive sports bets for years – and he’s currently looking to place another 7-figure wager on the outcome of the AFC Championship game on Sunday.

McIngvale tweeted that he’s looking for a sports book within the United States to accept a $1 million wager on the Tennessee Titans to pull off an upset at Arrowhead Stadium, at +300 odds. If a sportsbook takes up McIngvale’s offer, he would could win a cool $3 million if the Titans were to win.

Per BetMGM, the Titans are currently listed as a +280 underdog on a moneyline bet, and the Chiefs are favored by 7.5 points after their come-from-behind demolition of the Texans. The Titans have already beaten the Chiefs once this season in Week 10, as Derrick Henry rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-32 win in Nashville. Patrick Mahomes finished the game with a season-high 446 passing yards.
