Broncos vs. Chargers: 5 things to watch for in Week 6

The Broncos are set to host the Chargers on Sunday. Here are five storylines to keep an eye on leading up to the game.

The Denver Broncos (3-2) are set to host the Los Angeles Chargers (2-2) in Week 6 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a quick list of five storylines to keep an eye on leading up to the AFC West showdown.

1. The next next man up at right tackle: After losing Mike McGlinchey to a knee injury, the Broncos turned to Alex Palczewski at right tackle and he played very well before suffering an ankle injury. Palczewski is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain, which could make him a candidate for injured reserve. McGlinchey will be eligible to return from IR next week, but Denver will need a one-game fill-in against the Chargers. Matt Peart is the most likely candidate. The Broncos also have Frank Crum on the active roster and veteran Cam Fleming on the practice squad.

2. Devaughn Vele’s potential return at wide receiver: After leading the team with eight catches in Week 1, Vele injured his ribs and has not played since his debut. Vele has not appeared on the injury report in recent weeks so it seems that he has recovered. Josh Reynolds missed the last two days of practice with a hand injury and if Reynolds is not able to play on Sunday, Vele seems likely to return to the lineup.

3. A new center: Palczewski isn’t the only lineman battling an ankle injury this week. Starting center Luke Wattenberg has also been sidelined, which likely means Alex Forsyth is set to make his first NFL start against Los Angeles. Forsyth played with Bo Nix in college, so he already has existing chemistry with the rookie quarterback.

4. Joey Bosa’s uncertain status: The Chargers’ star pass rusher missed the last two days of practice with a hip injury, putting his status in doubt for Week 6. Denver’s banged-up offensive line would benefit from not having to face Bosa, who has 7.5 sacks in 12 career games against the Broncos.

5. Bo Nix against the NFL’s best defense: Putting aside an abnormal rain game against the Jets (67.9) two weeks ago, Nix’s passer rating has otherwise been trending up this season from 47.5 to 55.2 to 85.0 to 117.2. He’s now set to face a huge test when he goes up against an L.A. defense that ranks No. 1 in points allowed this season (12.5 per game). Nix has not had a single turnover during the team’s three-game winning streak and he has done a good job of eluding sacks. If Denver’s going to keep the streak going, Nix will need another strong performance against a tough Chargers squad.

Broncos place practice squad OT Will Sherman on injury list

The Broncos placed OT Will Sherman (ankle) on their practice squad injury list on Tuesday.

The offensive line injuries keep coming for the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos placed backup offensive tackle Will Sherman (ankle) on the team’s practice squad injury list on Tuesday, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The injury happened during practice last week.

Sherman (6-4, 300 pounds) joined the Broncos in 2022 after previously competing on the practice squad of the New England Patriots in 2021. He spent last season on Denver’s practice squad and is yet to make his NFL debut.

The Broncos also lost fill-in starting right tackle Alex Palczewski and starting center Luke Wattenberg to ankle injuries this week. Denver signed tackle Cam Fleming and center Dieter Eiselen to the practice squad to add more depth while Palczewski and Wattenberg are sidelined.

Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) will be eligible to return from injured reserve next week. In the meantime, Matt Peart (right tackle) and Alex Forsyth (center) are likely the next men up on the offensive line.

Broncos OT Alex Palczewski believed to have suffered high ankle sprain

Alex Palczewski likely has a high ankle sprain. Mike McGlinchey has to sit out one more game before being eligible to return from IR.

Denver Broncos right tackle Alex Palczewski is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s 34-18 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Palczewski (6-6, 314 pounds) will undergo more testing on Monday. If it is indeed a high ankle sprain, Palczewski could miss multiple weeks. That would be a big blow to Denver’s offensive line as ‘Palco’ has done an excellent job filling in for Mike McGlinchey, who is still on injured reserve.

“Very impressed,” Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said when asked about Palczewski on Friday. “We talked about it last week. This guy started and I think he set a record for most games played in college. He just knows how to play the game. I think we kind of anticipated that he’d be able to hang in there and be productive.

“You don’t know for sure until you really see the live bullets and he’s kind of lived up to those expectations. It’s fun to watch when you have a guy that’s [a] late draft pick or a free agent who are able to come in and compete at that level and compete well. It’s very exciting.”

If the Broncos place Palczewski on IR, he would have to sit out at least four games. McGlinchey, meanwhile, will be eligible to return in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints.

In the meantime, Matt Peart is presumably the next man up against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6, assuming Palczewski won’t be available.

Broncos roster series: No. 79, OT Matt Peart

Broncos 27-year-old lineman Matt Peart is likely competing for a backup tackle/guard role this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year offensive tackle Matt Peart, No. 79.

Before the Broncos: Peart (6-7, 315 pounds) first made a name for himself at UConn in college, where he played from 2015-19, starting 48 games. As a result of his outstanding work on the line, he was drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the New York Giants. Peart dressed for 43 games in the NFC East, getting seven starts in his four years with the Giants.

Broncos tenure: After playing out his rookie contract with the Giants, Peart was signed by the Broncos this offseason to a one-year contract.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Toss up. Peart’s time with the Giants may not have been the most eye-popping, but there is a talent here. Peart may be looking at time as a swing guard/tackle in 2024. There are some injury concerns, however, as Peart missed most of 2022 with an ACL tear. He’ll get a chance to compete for a spot this summer.

Contract details for Broncos’ 3 recent free agent signings

New Broncos signees Matt Peart, Cody Barton and Justin Strnad will combine to count $4.9 million against the salary cap in 2024.

Before agreeing to a two-year deal with wide receiver Josh Reynolds this week, the Denver Broncos previously inked one-year contracts with offensive tackle Matt Peart and linebackers Cody Barton and Justin Strnad.

Terms of those three contracts are now known.

Barton received a $1.33 million base salary, a $1 million signing bonus and a $170,000 per-game roster bonus. That will give him a total salary cap hit of $2.46 million. His $1.33 million salary is guaranteed.

Strnad received a $1,055,000 base salary and a $250,000 signing bonus, giving him a total salary cap hit of $1,305,000. He has $500,000 guaranteed.

Peart received a $1,125,000 base salary and a $167,500 signing bonus, giving him a total salary cap hit of $1,152,500. He has $200,000 guaranteed.

Combined, those three players will account for $4,917,500 worth of salary cap space if they make the roster this summer. Before accounting for the Reynolds contract, OverTheCap.com estimates the Broncos have about $20.4 million in remaining cap space.

Reynolds’ two-year contract is said to be worth “up to” $14 million, but his base salary will be lower than $7 million per season. We will share Reynold’s contract details on Broncos Wire when they become available.

Broncos sign ex-Giants OL Matt Peart

The Denver Broncos have signed former New York Giants offensive tackle Matt Peart to a one-year deal.

The Denver Broncos have signed former New York Giants offensive tackle Matt Peart to a one-year deal.

The UConn product had a rocky start to his career with Big Blue. In four seasons, he appeared in 43 games but only started seven. This alone was underwhelming for a top-100 draft pick.

Even in his limited time, Peart was incredibly unproductive allowing 37 pressures and seven sacks throughout his career. To make matters worse, his Pro Football Focus grades declined in every season of his career culminating in a 42.9 PFF grade in 2023 with a horrid 34.0 run-blocking grade and a subpar 55.8 pass-blocking grade.

It is safe to say that the Peart experiment was a failure in New York but there really have not been any offensive line successes, other than Andrew Thomas, during Peart’s tenure with the Giants.

General manager Joe Schoen focused heavily on repairing the offensive line early in free agency and that work could continue in the 2024 NFL draft.

Broncos sign OT Matt Peart to 1-year contract

The Broncos are signing Matt Peart, a backup swing tackle who can provide cover on the offensive line.

The Denver Broncos are signing offensive tackle Matt Peart to a one-year contract, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Terms of the deal are not yet known.

Peart (6-7, 318 pounds) entered the league as a third-round pick out of UConn with the New York Giants in 2020. He dressed for 43 games over the last four years, earning seven starts.

Peart (26) started five games for the Giants in 2021. He was credited with allowing four sacks and was penalized three times in 421 snaps that season, according to Pro Football Focus. Peart served mostly as a backup from 2022-23.

Peart seems like a backup swing tackle candidate for the Broncos this year behind left tackle Garett Bolles and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. It remains to be seen if this means Denver won’t be re-signing backup swing tackle Cam Fleming, who remains a free agent.

We are tracking all of the team’s free agency moves on Broncos Wire.

8 pending free agents the Giants should not re-sign

The New York Giants will have 30 free agents to deal with come March and at least eight of them should be allowed to walk.

The New York Giants have a lot of decisions and work to do this offseason after a disappointing 6-11 season.

They have a slew of players headed for free agency and will have to make decisions on whether to bring them back next season.

Here’s a quick list of players they should let walk.

Giants place Evan Neal on season-ending IR, activate Matt Peart

The New York Giants have placed RT Evan Neal on injured reserve, activated OL Matt Peart from IR and elevated two from the practice squad.

The disappointing second season for New York Giants right tackle Evan Neal has officially come to an end.

The Giants announced on Sunday that Neal has been placed on injured reserve (IR) as the result of a sprained ankle that has kept him out in recent weeks.

Neal ends the season having appeared in just seven games (all starts) while compiling a Pro Football Focus grade of 39.8, which is dead last among all qualifying tackles.

Replacing Neal on the 53-man roster is offensive lineman Matt Peart, who was officially activated from IR just days after he was designated to return.

A third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Peart will now fill the role of backup to Tyre Phillips, who has taken over as the team’s starter in place of Neal.

The Giants have also elevated kicker Mason Crosby and linebacker Tomon Fox from the practice squad. It is the first elevation for both players.

Crosby was signed earlier this week to replace Cade York, who landed on IR with a quad injury. He was slated to fill in for Randy Bullock, who had replaced Graham Gano, each of whom are also on IR.

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring) was a projected non-participant in practice on Friday and was joined by three others.

The New York Giants enjoyed an off day on Friday with their final practice scheduled for Saturday ahead of a Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With most players away from team facilities, that meant little change in terms of injury status. However, the Giants still moved forward with a projected injury report.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a projected non-participant due to a hamstring issue that has plagued him for several weeks.

“He’s still working through his hamstring,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters this week.

Even with an extra day off this week, Sexy Dexy seems unlikely to suit up on Monday afternoon against the Eagles.

The Giants’ full (projected) Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee), OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Lawrence Cager (groin)

Limited participant: DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), RB Matt Breida (hamstring), LB Carter Coughlin (neck), P Jamie Gillan (groin), S Xavier McKinney (illness)

Full participant: OL Justin Pugh (calf/neck), TE Darren Waller (hamstring), RB Gary Brightwell (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)
