Washington’s Week 3 inactives vs. Bills

Here are Washington’s inactives for Week 3 vs. the Bills.

The Washington Football Team is set to play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Now, we know what Washington’s inactive list will look like for the game against the Bills.

Washington listed defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles, tight end Sammis Reyes, defensive end Shaka Toney and cornerback Darryl Roberts as inactive.

This list is no surprise. The only new addition is Ioannidis, one of the most important players on defense. Ioannidis injured his knee in the Week 2 win over the Giants and missed practice time last week. He did not make the trip to Buffalo.

Daniel Wise, who was promoted to the active roster on Saturday, is officially active for Washington.

Buffalo listed the following five players as inactive:

  • DE Boogie Basham
  • DE Efe Obada
  • DT Harrison Phillips
  • RB Matt Breida
  • OL Tommy Doyle

Washington defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis will not play vs. Bills

Washington will be without defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis against the Bills. Washington promoted Daniel Wise from the practice squad.

The Washington Football Team will be without a key defender on Sunday at Buffalo. Defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis did not make the trip to Buffalo and is out on Sunday, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

This is a mild surprise as Ioannidis injured his knee in the Week 2 win vs. the Giants. He left the game but did return. Washington also received a couple of days of extra rest due to playing on Thursday night.

However, Ioannidis did not participate in practice on Wednesday, was limited on Thursday and was listed as DNP on Friday.

Through two games, Ioannidis has four tackles. He has yet to record a sack. Ioannidis missed most of last season with a bicep injury.

In response to the move, Washington elevated Daniel Wise from the practice squad to the main roster for Sunday’s game. Washington didn’t make a corresponding move because the roster had remained at 52 players.

Wise signed with Washington in January. He has spent time on the practice squads of the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. He has yet to appear in an NFL game. He had some impressive moments this summer in the preseason.

The Washington Football Team was back on the practice field Thursday ahead of Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. On Wednesday, Washington listed two key players on the injury report in running back Antonio Gibson and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis.

Washington received a bit of good news on both players Thursday. Meanwhile, Buffalo’s injury report also looked a bit better.

First injury report for Washington vs. Bills, Week 3

The first injury report of the week is out for the Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills.

The Washington Football Team and the Buffalo Bills released their first injury reports of the week on Wednesday. For Washington, almost everyone was a full participant, outside of two players. The Bills listed nine players on the injury report, including four who did not participate on Wednesday.

Here is a breakdown of the injury report for both teams from Wednesday’s practice.

Washington injury, absence updates from day 10 of training camp

Injury news and notes from Sunday’s practice in Ashburn.

The Washington Football Team was back at practice on Sunday in Ashburn after a day off on Saturday. Of course, not everyone was on the field in pads.

Quarterback Kyle Allen remains sidelined with an ankle injury. He’s been out of practice for a week now. If Allen continues to miss time, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he began the season on injured reserve.

Defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis did not practice. Head coach Ron Rivera said he wasn’t feeling well, and it was nothing serious. Rivera also noted it had nothing to do with COVID-19. Ioannidis was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list last week.

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel was seen on the field but did not practice. Samuel, who has dealt with a groin injury since before minicamp in June, remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Rookie defensive end Shaka Toney did not practice and worked off to the side with trainers.

The Football Team did receive some good news on the injury front as cornerback William Jackson III, tight end Sammis Reyes, left tackle Charles Leno, wide receiver Kelvin Harmon and offensive lineman Keith Ismael were all back.

Matt Ioannidis, Cornelius Lucas activated from COVID-19 list

Washington now has four players remaining on the reserve/COVID-19 list, three of which are notable starters.

In the first five days of training camp, the Washington Football Team had seven players placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Washington could be on the verge of turning things around as offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis were activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

Defensive back Chris Miller was also activated from the list, giving Washington four players left. Brandon Scherff, Daron Payne and Curtis Samuel are three of the four players remaining on the COVID list.

There could be more good news on the horizon for Washington as Mike Jones of USA TODAY Sports reported on Tuesday that Washington’s vaccination percentage was up to 84%, a significant increase from when training camp opened.

On Monday, Washington was without its top three defensive tackles, with Jonathan Allen day-to-day with a hamstring injury and Payne and Ioannidis on the COVID list.

Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Daron Payne is the seventh Washington player placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list over the past week.

The Washington Football Team placed defensive tackle Daron Payne on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Sunday.

Payne is now the seventh member of the team placed on the COVID list. On Saturday, the WFT placed offensive guard Brandon Scherff and reserve offensive tackle David Sharpe on the list.

Washington was off on Sunday after traveling back from Richmond to Ashburn. The team will be back on the practice field Monday.

Of the seven players on the COVID-19 list, Scherff, Payne, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis are either starters or are expected to be significant players on the 2021 team.

Head coach Ron Rivera opened camp last week, expressing his frustration on his team’s lower vaccination rate as compared to other teams. Rivera, who underwent treatment for cancer during the season in 2020, is immunocompromised.

Washington opens the preseason at New England on Thursday, Aug. 12.

Curtis Samuel, Matt Ioannidis added to COVID-19 list

Washington fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Curtis Samuel.

The Washington Football Team will have to wait a bit longer for wide receiver Curtis Samuel to take the field this summer.

On Thursday, the team placed Samuel, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis and cornerback Chris Miller on the reserve/COVID-19 list. This list is for players who either tested positive for COVID-19 or were in close contact with someone who tested positive.

Samuel, who is nursing a groin injury from minicamp, was originally placed on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

Ioannidis is returning after missing most of last season with a bicep injury. He was placed on the COVID-19 list in Nov. 2020.

Washington did receive some good news on the roster front Thursday as defensive tackle Tim Settle was returned to the active roster. Settle was originally placed on the non-football illness list on Tuesday.

The return of Matt Ioannidis will be huge for Washington’s defense in 2021

The talk around the 2021 Washington Football Team centers on the celebrated defensive line, featuring four former first-round picks and

The talk around the 2021 Washington Football Team centers on the celebrated defensive line, featuring four former first-round picks and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, running back Antonio Gibson and wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Each of these players gives Washington fans plenty to be excited about.

However, another standout player many may have forgotten is defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis.

Ioannidis, 27, is entering his sixth NFL season in 2021. The former Temple Owl tore his bicep in Week 3 of the 2020 season and was placed on injured reserve. Washington would go on to finish No. 2 in total defense without Ioannidis.

Surprisingly, many fans have short memories of how good of a player Ioannidis is. Before the 2021 NFL draft, any fan-generated trade on social media included Ioannidis.

It’s clear head coach Ron Rivera, and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio know what they have in Ioannidis.

Could Ioannidis actually be Washington’s best interior pass-rusher?

Brian Baldinger of the NFL Network and FOX Sports certainly thinks so.

Entering 2021, Ioannidis has 22 career sacks — 16 of those sacks came in 2018 and 2019. From 2017-20, Pro Football Focus gave Ioannidis a pass-rushing grade of 70.6 or more in each of those four seasons. In 2018 and 2019, Ioannidis outperformed Jonathan Allen as an interior rusher.

To give you an indication of how good of an interior pass-rusher Allen is, Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recently ranked him as the No. 9 interior pass-rusher in the NFL.

Add in Daron Payne and, arguably, no team in the NFL has that type of depth on the interior.

Ioannidis may not receive the hype of some of Washington’s other stud defenders like Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Allen and Payne, but he’s clearly a respected member of what could be the NFL’s top defense in 2021.

While Ioannidis is an outstanding pass-rusher, his return should also shore up Washington’s run defense in 2021 — its biggest weakness in 2020.
