Grading the LSU coaching staff under new head coach Brian Kelly

How one national pundit grades the LSU staff

The new era of LSU Tigers football begins now. The disastrous two-year run following the national title run is now in the rearview mirror. A team that won 16-straight games from the 2018 Fiesta Bowl through the 2019 CFP national championship game, only managed 11 wins combined in 2020 and 2021.

Then head coach Ed Orgeron was given his separation papers following the win over Florida. The wheels were already in motion the week prior when LSU fell to Kentucky 42-21 in Lexington. Athletic director Scott Woodward had seen enough and it was time to make a change. The brass opted to go the route of Brian Kelly of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The hire raised eyebrows but now it is time for Kelly to get the Tigers back on track. After being a middling team for two years, LSU is hungry for a competitive team again. We will soon see if the staff compiled by the new head coach will pay dividends.

According to Brandon Marcello of 247Sports, the staff under Brian Kelly at LSU gets a grade of A. They finished behind the Florida Gators in the SEC with a grade of A+. Their annual rivals hired Billy Napier right out of the Tigers’ backyard in Lafayette. These hires will be under the microscope to see which team made the better hire.

What Marcello Says…

Brian Bahr/Getty Images

Kelly had the Irish in College Football Playoff contention once again in 2021 and it appeared his 2022 and 2023 units were the best equipped to finally win the program’s first title since 1989. He can probably push LSU into contention in 2023 with a couple of Top 5 signing classes and a half dozen instant-impact stars out of the transfer portal. He certainly built a tremendous staff to get those type of players on campus and develop them into superstars. Perhaps the biggest hire in assistant coaching circles was Frank Wilson, the McNeese State head coach who resigned from his post to become the Tigers’ running backs coach for a second time. Reviews among those in the industry are mixed with Cincinnati offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock as a game-day coach but, again, time will tell. This is a solid staff with SEC connections and a shared championship mentality.

Underrated hiring might be his addition of Matt House as the defensive coordinator coupled with Jamar Cain as the defensive line coach. Only time will tell as to whether Robert Steeples is the right choice as the secondary coach. His first time as a position coach. He comes from the Minnesota Vikings where he was a special teams assistant.

House spent time in the SEC as the defensive coordinator of the Kentucky Wildcats in 2017 and 2018. In his final season with UK, House’s defense finished as a top-six scoring defense with just 16.8 points per game allowed. That season Josh Allen punished quarterbacks with 88 total tackles, 21.5 TFLs, and 17 sacks. That might be how they view edge rusher BJ Ojulari, who led the team in quarterback pressures with 54 in 2021.

Cain is expected to elevate a pass rush that was lacking for the Tigers in 2021. The Oklahoma Sooners had Nik Bonitto, who finished with 52 quarterback pressures last year. He was the highest-graded pass rusher for the Sooners. They also had Isaiah Thomas, who finished with 34 pressures. It could be the future for Ojulari and returning senior Ali Gaye.

Mike Denbrock looks to bring an offensive identity back to LSU that was lacking in 2021. After losing Kayshon Boutte to an injury, the offense lacked an identity. They couldn’t run the ball in the manner they had in recent years. That is why Brad Davis needs to figure out who will be on his starting offensive line. They could have five new starters in 2022. Cam Wire is the only returning starter from last year’s team. However, the team added top transfers Miles Frazier and Tre’Mond Shorts as well as five-star signee Will Campbell.

Overall it feels like the grade of “A” is fitting with the No. 4 staff in 247Sports’ rankings of coaching staff hires.

LSU safety Jay Ward set to return in 2022

A veteran safety elects to return to LSU in 2022.

One of the decisions that the LSU Tigers were waiting on for the 2022 season has been made. After discussions about his future, starting safety Jay Ward will return next season according to Shea Dixon of 247Sports.

Ward made the move over to safety after playing cornerback and finished with a team-leading two interceptions in 2021. Ward also snagged three interceptions in 2020, finishing second on the team to Eli Ricks. He appeared in 11 games this past season. Ward finished with 69 tackles, one TFL, four passes defended, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.

Ward will likely take his free safety spot once again in the new defense led by Matt House. His presence will be much needed with a complete revamp of the secondary after losing four cornerbacks that made starts for the defense in 2021.

Derek Stingley Jr and Cordale Flott are both heading to the NFL. Dwight McGlothern transferred to Arkansas and Eli Ricks transferred to Alabama. The team will have Todd Harris Jr back along with former Razorbacks safety Joe Foucha. Major Burns dealt with injury concerns but his return will give the group a boost. The team is still waiting on the decision of Jacoby Mathews, top safety still remaining on the 2022 recruiting board.

LSU has added a few pieces through the portal on defense but Ward’s return might be the biggest of all of them.

Virginia linebacker West Weeks announces transfer to LSU

LSU adds another transfer, does it help in pursuit of a certain 2023 prospect?

Virginia linebacker transfer West Weeks has announced he will transfer to LSU. Weeks is a three-star prospect from Virginia 2021 class. He decided to go to Virginia over Colorado, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and others.

Weeks played 11 games for Virginia as a true freshman and compiled 31 total tackles and one sack. He also had five passes defended. Unfortunately, weeks suffered a broken leg in the last game against Virginia Tech.

Weeks is the ninth UVA player to transfer to another program since the end of the season, and 11 more players remain in the transfer portal.

Linebacker is a position of need for the Tigers, with Damone Clark moving on to the NFL. Over the past week, LSU had added six transfer players and now has eight total transfers. LSU has also extended an offer to Whit Weeks, West’s younger brother in the class of 2023. The younger Weeks plays for Oconee County, the same school that produced former starting quarterback Max Johnson.

Weeks looks like a linebacker that can do a little beat of everything, rush the passer, is solid against the and even does well in pass defense. He should do well under new defensive coordinator Matt House.

The Tigers have been hitting the transfer portal hard, looking to upgrade their roster to compete next season. LSU has many new talents coming in and players with high football IQ. With a new and improved coaching staff, the Tigers should be fun to watch for years to come.

What defensive coordinator Matt House Brings to LSU

What does Matt House bring to the table?

The LSU Tigers hired Matt House as their defensive coordinator recently; he is currently coaching linebackers with the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Matt House history

House started as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in 2001-2002. In 2003 he was a defensive assistant at North Carolina. After his time at North Carolina, House coached defensive linemen at Gardner-Webb. House spent the next few years coaching in the NFL and college before joining Kentucky in 2016 as inside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator.

In 2017 House became defensive coordinator at Kentucky under head coach Mark Stoops. In House’s first year, the Wildcats gave up 28.2 points per game and 426.9 total yards per game. But in 2018, the defense vastly improved. That year, Kentucky went 10-3 and ranked 12th in the final AP poll.

The defense was one of the best in the country; they only gave up 16.8 points per game and only allowed 186.3 passing yards per game in touch SEC conference. In addition, Kentucky forced 1.5 turnovers per game.

Before being the defensive coordinator at Kentucky House, was DC at Pittsburgh for three years and FIU for one year. In his last year with the Panthers, the defense ranked No.34 in the country. At FIU, House coached a solid red-zone defense and held opponents to less than 14 points four times.

[lawrence-related id=35051]

What he brings to the table

House uses multiple defensive fronts between the 4-3 and 3-4 scheme. He likes his defensive line to get in the backfield and create negative plays. Having coached linebackers, House believes in strong linebacker play. He wants to mix things up between zone and man in the secondary.

One of House’s strong points is player development; as the years go by, his defense gets better along with player development. For example, at Kentucky, he helped linebackers Courtney Love and Jordan Jones make the All-SEC second team in their first years as starters. While at Pittsburgh, House coached Aaron Donald and had a hand in his development.

Contract details revealed for Mike Denbrock and Matt House

Contract details revealed for two top assistants on Brian Kelly’s staff.

LSU made two key hires at the top of the new look Brian Kelly staff. Mike Denbrock comes over from Cincinnati to run the offense while Matt House leaves the NFL to run the defense. According to Koki Riley of The Daily Advertiser, we know what the contracts look like.

New LSU offensive coordinator Michael Denbrock will make $4.2 million across three years before incentives, and new defensive coordinator Matt House has signed a three-year contract worth $5.7 million.

LSU released Denbrock’s contract information to the USA TODAY Network on Friday after a public records request. House’s contract was received Thursday.

Mike Denbrock rejoined his former boss Brian Kelly after four seasons with Cincinnati. He wasn’t part of Kelly’s Bearcat staff but was hired onto the initial Notre Dame staff. He also spent time with the new LSU head coach at Grand Valley State. Denbrock’s predecessor, Jake Peetz was paid $1.35 million for 2021 and he will be on a similar pay structure for the Tigers. Based on the contract information, Denbrock would be a top 20 paid assistant. He made $475,000 with the Bearcats according to the USA TODAY Sports assistant salary database.

Denbrock, the former offensive coordinator at Cincinnati, will make $1.3 million in the first year, $1.4 million in the second, and $1.5 million in the third. If LSU qualifies for a bowl game, Denbrock will make an additional $15,000 and another $100,000 if the Tigers win the national championship.

House doesn’t have previous ties to Brian Kelly but he does have SEC ties from his time with the Kentucky Wildcats. He left Lexington for the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2019 season and was part of the defensive turnaround that led to a Super Bowl victory. House is tasked with rebuilding a defense that has seen a mass exodus following the 2021 regular season.

House will see a significant pay raise from his predecessor Daronte Jones. Jones was the No. 12 highest-paid assistant last season at $1.45 million. House’s pay will rise to $2 million by year three.

House, who was the Kansas City Chiefs’ linebackers coach before joining Brian Kelly’s staff at LSU, will earn $1.8 million in Year One, $1.9 million in Year Two, and $2 million through the remainder of the contract. House would receive the same bowl game and national championship bonuses as Denbrock.

Harold Perkins commits to Texas A&M over LSU and Texas

Harold Perkins opts for Texas A&M over LSU, Texas as expected.

Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M added to their five-star laden class on Sunday when linebacker Harold Perkins choose the Aggies over LSU and Texas.

The 247Sports composite rankings have Perkins as the top linebacker in the country as well as the top player in Texas. He’s the sixth five-star to join Texas A&M’s class and the third top 10 recruit.

To an extent, LSU was in this the entire race. But with all the coaching turnover and instability the last two years, it was never that likely Perkins ended up at LSU.

LSU will have an entirely new defensive staff in 2022 and Perkins didn’t even know what that was going to look like until just last week. Blake Baker, who served as LSU’s linebacker coach and Perkins’ primary recruiter, announced a couple of weeks ago that he would not be returning to LSU.

Perkins took an unofficial to LSU on November 27th, the weekend LSU just happened to be facing Texas A&M. He also took an unofficial to Baton Rouge last June.

LSU could have used Perkins’ services after some inconsistency at linebacker the last couple years. Landing Perkins would have been a monumental splash for Brian Kelly and LSU, but the miss is understandable given the circumstances.

Former LSU Tigers DB Tyrann Mathieu gives ringing endorsement for Matt House

Plenty of positive reactions to the hiring of Matt House.

The LSU Tigers announced their newest addition to Brian Kelly’s initial staff for the 2022 season. Matt House will leave the Chiefs following the season to take over as the new defensive coordinator.

One current Kansas City Chief and former LSU Tiger had nothing but positive things to say about new defensive coordinator Matt House.

I’m excited for coach House and all of tiger nation! This man loves football & teaching! One of the best I’ve been around. This tiger defense will be well coached from day one! Let’s all buy in!!! FOREVER LSU! – Tyrann Mathieu on Twitter

In 2016 as a member of the Kentucky Wildcats defensive staff, the defense allowed 30.8 points per game and 436.8 yards of total offense. The next season he was promoted to coordinator of the Wildcats defense. They saw improvement under his watch.

The team lowered their points per game to 28.2 and 426.9 total yards per game. Not a huge change but improvement isn’t always instantaneous. In 2018 Kentucky won 10 games and saw drastic improvement. House’s defense allowed just 16.8 points and 333.2 yards per game.

His best player on that side of the ball, Josh Allen finished with 17 sacks, 21.5 TFLs, four passes defended, two forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. Following that season he joined the Kansas City Chiefs staff as the linebackers coach.

House will come with energy and high expectations. Three of his former players spoke to our colleagues about him prior to joining the Kansas City staff.

“They can expect a lot of energy,” cornerback Lonnie Johnson said to Chiefs Wire. “Expect him to probably punch through a board if the linebackers are not playing well. He’s going to come with a different type of savviness to him.”

“He’s just a strong-minded coach,” said safety Mike Edwards. “He’s a players’ coach. I love him to death; he’s one of the best coaches I’ve had in my career. He’s going to be hands-on, and he gets familiar with his players.”

“He’s going to hold you accountable for everything,” said safety Darius West. “He’ll correct you no matter what. He’s not passive, he’ll get after you and let you know what you have to do to be successful.”

Given how his players talked about House, it appears that the LSU Tigers are getting a good coach. It will be interesting to watch it all unfold as they head into the spring.

Chiefs LB coach Matt House leaving after 2021 season to become LSU’s defensive coordinator

The #Chiefs will be looking for a new linebackers coach at the end of the season with Matt House being named the new defensive coordinator at LSU.

The Kansas City Chiefs will find themselves looking for a new linebacker’s coach at the conclusion of the 2021 postseason.

LSU was reported to have an interest in Chiefs LB coach Matt House for their defensive coordinator vacancy. On Tuesday, LSU announced that House would be named their defensive coordinator at the conclusion of the NFL season.

House, now is in his third season with the Chiefs as their linebacker coach, first joined the team in 2019 under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He had worked under Spagnuolo previously as a defensive quality control coach with the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. He’s been crucial in developing the linebacker group in Kansas City, mentoring the likes of second-year LB Willie Gay Jr. and rookie LB Nick Bolton.

House returns to the college coaching ranks after having spent three seasons with Kentucky, including two as defensive coordinator (2016-2018). He’s also been a defensive coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh (2013-2014) and Florida International (2015).

Needless to say, at least one Chiefs player gave House a huge vote of confidence in his new gig.

“I’m excited for coach House and all of tiger nation,” Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu wrote on Twitter. “This man loves football & teaching! One of the best I’ve been around. This tiger defense will be well coached from day one! Let’s all buy in!!! FOREVER LSU!”

The Chiefs will have some in-house options for replacements for House. That group includes outside linebackers coach Ken Flajole, defensive quality control coach Alex Whittingham and assistant defensive line coach Terry Bradden.

Kansas City’s Matt House has been named LSU defensive coordinator

LSU now has a defensive coordinator.

The LSU Tigers announced that current Kansas City Chiefs linebacker coach Matt House will take over as the defensive coordinator on Brian Kelly’s staff. He last coached in the SEC for the Kentucky Wildcats from 2016-18, the last two years as the defensive coordinator.

Brian Kelly spoke about House in a press release from the athletics department.

“Matt checks every box we’re looking for in a defensive coordinator,” Kelly said. “He’s led elite SEC defenses, recruited and developed all-conference and All-American performers at multiple positions, and garnered ample experience in both the NFL and as a coordinator at multiple collegiate stops.

”He possesses a great understanding on how to defend the type of offenses we will face each week in our conference, and his ability to put players in position to make plays aligns perfectly with the identity that we want to develop with our defense. I’m excited that he’s joining our staff as we work toward building a championship program at LSU.”

House will officially join the LSU coaching staff following the completion of the 2021 NFL season.

LSU HC Brian Kelly targeting Chiefs LB coach Matt House for defensive coordinator gig

Brian Kelly is targeting #Chiefs LB Coach Matt House for the LSU defensive coordinator opening according to a new report.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Kansas City Chiefs could lose an assistant coach to the college football ranks after the conclusion of the 2021 NFL postseason.

New LSU HC Brian Kelly is starting to make some progress in his search for coordinators. According to a report from Football Scoop, via our friends at LSUTigersWire, Chiefs LB coach Matt House is on the shortlist of candidates for the defensive coordinator position.

Here is what the report had to say:

“On the defensive side of the ball, Kelly has set his target – per sources — on an up-and-coming NFL assistant coach Matt House, the Kansas City Chiefs’ linebackers coach who spent almost two decades coaching at the collegiate level before he exited the University of Kentucky three years ago for an opportunity with the Chiefs.”

House joined the Chiefs’ coaching staff as linebackers coach in 2019 and has overseen the development of players like Willie Gay Jr. and Nick Bolton. He has a ton of experience at the collegiate level, including experience as a defensive coordinator. He previously filled the position with the University of Pittsburgh, Florida International University and the University of Kentucky. His position with the Wildcats was his most recent collegiate position and his defense was one of the better units in the SEC.

It’s unclear if House would leave the NFL for the college ranks again, but should he choose to do so the Chiefs will have some in-house options for replacements. Outside linebackers coach Ken Flajole is fully capable of taking over and coaching all of the linebackers in Kansas City. They could also promote Defensive Quality Control Coach Alex Whittingham. Should they venture outside for replacements, it was reported that the Chiefs attempted to lure Antonio Pierce away from Arizona State prior to hiring House. Pierce played in the NFL under Steve Spagnuolo with the New York Giants.
