The Blue Jays decided to intentionally walk Shohei Ohtani four times after Matt Chapman’s outburst

They really listened to him.

Shohei Ohtani’s pursuit of 62 home runs this season has been especially remarkable when you consider that he’s doing so with very little protection in the lineup. Mike Trout has been hurt, and Mickey Moniak is the only other Angels hitter batting above .300.

Teams generally haven’t pitched around Ohtani, but Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman was tired of seeing his team take that chance.

After Ohtani hit a home run in his first at-bat of Friday’s game in Toronto, broadcast cameras picked up footage of Chapman confronting manager John Schneider in the dugout. His message was basically: Why are we pitching to him? He’s the only one in that lineup who can hit.

Chapman was asked about that confrontation after the game, and he said that it came from a good place.

And since that scene in the dugout, the Blue Jays have generally heeded the message. In Saturday’s game, Ohtani was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat. After hitting a double in his second at-bat, Ohtani was intentionally walked in the next two plate appearances.

In Sunday’s game, they Blue Jays pitched to Ohtani in his first two at-bats. But after a single in the third inning, Ohtani was intentionally walked in his next plate appearance.

They walked him a fourth time in the ninth inning after a passed ball.

Now, it makes sense for the Blue Jays to challenge another Angels hitter to beat them. But at the same time, it’s kind of lame to avoid pitching to Ohtani. He had only been intentionally walked eight times heading into the series. So, hopefully the Blue Jays didn’t start a trend of Ohtani getting the Barry Bonds treatment from pitchers.

Fans certainly blamed Chapman for all the intentional walks, though.

Warriors’ Klay Thompson reacts to Oakland A’s third baseman Matt Chapman wearing his No. 11 jersey

After Oakland A’s third baseman Matt Chapman wore a Klay Thompson jersey to a postgame presser, the Warriors guard responded with a post on Instagram.

Following a loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday night, Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman wore a familiar jersey.

The two-time gold glove-winning fielder donned a Klay Thompson “We Believe” edition No. 11 jersey to the postgame press conference at the Oakland Coliseum. When asked about his jersey choice, Chapman said he “loved” the jersey and called Thompson “awesome.”

Thompson took notice, sharing a photo of Chapman on his Instagram with a message. Alongside a picture of Chapman wearing his jersey, Thompson posted “shooters shoot” on his Instagram story.

After Thompson’s post on Instagram on Saturday, Chapman launched a home run on the way to a 3-2 win for the A’s over the Yankees at Rickey Henderson Field. Chapman finished the contest going 1-4, with an RBI from his solo shot in the fourth inning.

For the 2021 campaign, the 28-year-old third baseman is hitting .221 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs for the Oakland A’s.

Athletics’ Matt Chapman wears Klay Thompson jersey after game vs. Yankees

After a game against the New York Yankees, Oakland A’s third baseman Matt Chapman donned a Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson jersey.

Although they moved to San Francisco two seasons ago, the Golden State Warriors still have some fans with their former next-door neighbors, the Oakland Athletics.

Following a tough loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday night, star third baseman Matt Chapman was caught wearing a familiar No. 11 jersey. The two-time Platinum Glove winner donned a “We Believe” Oakland edition of Klay Thompson’s jersey to the postgame press conference at the Oakland Coliseum.

When asked about the jersey, Chapman called the Warriors’ five-time All-Star shooting guard “awesome.”

(H/T NBC Sports Bay Area):

Thought it was going to bring some good mojo today, but I’m going to have to put this one away for a little bit. But I do love the jersey, and Klay Thompson is awesome.

For the 2021 season, Chapman is currently batting .225 with 20 home runs and 59 RBIs. On Thursday against the Yankees, Chapman went 2-2 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the third inning.

Warriors share good luck message with the Oakland Athletics on Opening Night

On Opening Night for their former neighbor, The Golden State Warriors shared a good luck message with the Oakland Athletics.

After wishing the San Francisco Giants good luck on Opening Day, the Golden State Warriors turned their attention to their former neighbor. On Friday, the Oakland Athletics hosted the Los Angeles Angels to start a truncated edition of the 2020 MLB season.

Before the A’s took the field, the Warriors shared a message with the team on social media. Along with a video from the moment Klay Thompson tossed the first pitch in Oakland, the Warriors wished the A’s the “best of luck” for their season.

Via @warriors on Twitter:

After being claimed by the A’s in 2018, Thompson’s younger brother Trayce played three games with Oakland before being designated for assignment. In February, Thompson signed a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2020.

In their opening night matchup, Frankie Montas got the nod against Andrew Heaney and the Angels. With a pair of late runs from Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman, the A’s held the lead heading into the top of the 9th inning. However, Bay Area native Jason Castro hit a home run off Oakland’s All-Star closer Liam Hendriks to tie the game.

With new rule changes in place, the A’s and Angels went into extra innings to start the season. In the bottom of the 10th, Matt Olson blasted a grand slam walk-off home run to send the Athletics home with an Opening Day victory, 7-3.

The A’s will be back at The Oakland Coliseum on Saturday for game two against Mike Trout and the Angels.

Prediction

Athletics 7, Angels 3

Moneyline (ML)

These two pitchers met in the final regular-season game of 2019 and it was a pitchers’ duel of sorts.

Heany went for 5 1/3 innings with one earned run and Montas threw six innings with one earned run in a 3-2 Angels’ victory; however, Heaney is 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA in his last seven starts versus the Athletics while Montas is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last seven against the Angels.

Oakland owned Los Angeles last season (13-6) and the A’s are 7-1 in the last eight meetings between the two. The vig on the favorite (-152) is a fair price and I don’t see why the Athletics cannot continue their dominance of the Angels. Oakland is a sharp sleeper pick to go deep in the playoffs.

TAKE the ATHLETICS (-152) to beat the Angels. New to sports betting? A $152 bet on the Athletics earns a profit of $100 if Oakland wins.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

It seems like every other year the Athletics are one of the surprise teams in MLB. Sports betting markets didn’t take the Athletics as seriously as they should have, hence Oakland’s third-best run line record in the majors (91-72).

As you read above, Montas has had bankable success against the Angels and when you mix in the Athletics’ above-average bullpen—seventh in ERA, fifth in batting average and fifth in WHIP—we LIKE the ATHLETICS -1.5 (+125) on the run line.

New to sports betting? A $50 bet on the Athletics earns a profit of $62.50 if Oakland wins by two or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

Oakland and Los Angeles were ranked similarly in every major hitting category last season. And though there are a lot of big names in both lineups, the Athletics played to the third-most Unders in the majors and the Angels had a 79-76-7 Over/Under record in 2019.

Of course, CF Mike Trout could do damage but the absence of expensive free-agent signee Rendon makes the Angels’ lineup a little easier to handle.

All that being said, the lineups’ firepower in this matchup compels me to AVOID betting the projected total of 8.5.
