Bills’ Connor McGovern added to lengthy injury report

How the #Bills’ injury report looked Wednesday:

A lengthy injury list for the Buffalo Bills keeps inviting players on board.

After a laundry list of injuries reported on Tuesday, the ensuing day saw another addition: Offensive lineman Connor McGovern. According to numerous reports from Bills practice, McGovern sustained a knee injury which saw him leave the workout.

Per ESPN, McGovern left the session but did not leave the field after putting a sleeve on his leg. Typically if a player has to depart the practice entirely, it’s potentially a worse sign.

McGovern signed in Buffalo this offseason and is expected to start at left guard.

Bills Wire will provide an update when information is made available.

In addition, there were a few other names to join and leave the injury list. Running back Jordan Mims was added to it. Per The Athletic, Mims was hit in the mouth during Tuesday’s workout. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Eli Ankou (calf) returned.

Here is a rundown of the rest of the injury report from Wednesday:

LOOK: Bills QB Matt Barkley wearing brace on elbow

Barkley brace:

Among those on a lengthy Buffalo Bills injury report is Matt Barkley.

In Buffalo’s 27-15 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Barkley was injured late. On his final snap, he fumbled the ball when hit and injured his right elbow.

After the game, Barkley told reporters “we’ll see” when asked how he felt. What we can actually see this week is a brace on his injured elbow.

ESPN posted an image following the Bills’ Tuesday practice. Barkley was not working out with his teammates and he was spotted with a sleeve on.

His status is currently uncertain relating to Buffalo’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. If Barkley can’t go, there’s a possibility backup Kyle Allen plays the entire game if starting QB Josh Allen does not get on the field.

Bills injury update: Players sitting out practice totals seven

Time to heal up:

The Buffalo Bills had a laundry list of an injury report on Tuesday ahead of facing the Chicago Bears in their preseason finale.

In total, seven players missed the early week practice. It’s likely that this total is the largest the team has had so far this summer.

Considering it’s the last preseason game, getting health and on the field could be crucial for certain players. Bills Wire will continue to monitor the injury report throughout this upcoming week, but for now, here’s how the team’s list of dinged up players looked:

Bills at Bears: 6 storylines to watch for in preseason finale

#Bills at #Bears will conclude the preseason, but there are still plenty of storylines for this week:

Bills Wire Preseason Week 2 Player of the Game: Justin Shorter

Not a whole lot of candidates this week… but we found one (via

The Buffalo Bills preseason went on the road to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite losing 27-15 in a poor fashion, a few Bills players had a good game.

We are awarding our second season issue of the Player of the Week Award in 2023 to wide receiver Justin Shorter, who had five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown in the final offensive drive for the Bills:

The Florida product was drafted by Buffalo in the 2023 in the 5th round and was named ‘a steal’ by Touchdown Wire. He was the lone bright spot in the Bills offense, connecting with backup quarterback Kyle Allen  in the second half on multiple short catches and the touchdown strike to the end zone.

Shorter, who is listed on the second team in Bills’ depth chart, had his first catch to convert a third down against Steelers’ CB James Pierre by beating him with a cut inside to move the sticks.

His second was also  won after cutting inside against Steelers’ 3rd string CB Chris Wilcox, taking a physical hit in the middle of the field. He beat Pierre on the outside in the only incompletion Kyle Allen had targeted him on.

During his touchdown winning drive, he used the sidelines well to save time on the clock after the two-minute warning, prior to the touchdown strike. His physicality and technical route-running was clearly evident and can evolve his game plan. We hope he will continue to progress and make an impact in the regular season behind Gabe Davis.

Buffalo will be on the road for their final preseason game, heading to Chicago to play against the Bears next Saturday. After McDermott declared it’s an open competition for the backup QB job last week and Allen performing better than Matt Barkley this week, it will be important to see Shorter have chemistry with both QBs if his snap count increases next week.

Bills’ Matt Barkley among multiple injury updates post-Steelers loss

#Bills’ Matt Barkley among multiple injury updates post-#Steelers loss:

It was injury added to insult for Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Barkley against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the second week of the preseason, the Bills lost in oft-ugly fashion, 27-15.

Barkley’s day started well: He entered the game as the second-string quarterback after he was No. 3 the week prior. Unfortunately, it was the same script as the one against the Indianapolis Colts.

After Barkley outplayed Kyle Allen last week when Allen went in the game before him, Allen returned the favor.

Although, Barkley made it easy on him after Barkley had three interceptions and four total turnovers.

That final giveaway, a fumble, is where Barkley was injured. The team announced that Barkley has sustained a right elbow injury.

Updates this soon are few and far between, but one came via the Buffalo News. Barkley said “we’ll see” when asked about an update:

Barkley was not alone on the injury report vs. the Steelers. A new addition was defensive end Shane Ray who is vying for a depth spot on the roster. A hamstring injury will not help his chances.

The final addition was DJ Dale. He sustained a back injury. It’s unclear if it’s related to the one he sustained last week against the Colts.

Two other notable names that did not play at all include running back Damien Harris (knee) and linebacker Terrel Bernard (hamstring). Both have been dealing with their respective injuries since last week.

After taking part in pregame warmups, tight end Dawson Knox (hand) and linebacker Tyler Matakevich (calf) did not suit up but are considered only day-to-day.

Bills Wire will continue to provide injury updates throughout the 2023 season.
