Matisse Thybulle reveals how he worked on his shooting in the offseason

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle reveals what type of shooting drills he went through in the summer.

CAMDEN, N.J. — When one looks at Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle’s career thus far, one sees the huge impact he has had on the defensive end. In three seasons in the league, he has already appeared on an All-Defensive Team twice in recognition of the way he disrupts the opposition’s game plan.

However, the offensive end has been a totally different story.

Thybulle has struggled to find a rhythm on that end of the floor. He is a career 32.4% shooter from deep, and he has been a virtual non-factor on offense. He shot 28.6% from deep in the 2022 playoffs though he was not able to play in Toronto during the first-round series due to Canada’s vaccination rules.

After the season, Thybulle vowed he would become an offensive asset. It was recently revealed he worked with Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard. The defensive standout from Washington opened up on his workouts at media day on Monday.

“A lot of it was shooting, shooting related,” Thybulle revealed. “It’s hard to create defensive situations in the offseason. It’s just you and a rebounder, but doing what I could conceptually, film-wise on the defensive ends, but mostly just working on myself offensively with ball-handling in the open court or corner 3s and just catch and shoot and doing things off the move.”

The corner 3s are going to be especially important for Thybulle. The Sixers need him to knock down those open looks because that corner 3 will be available regularly when playing next to James Harden.

Another big factor for Thybulle is he had a full offseason to work on his game for the first time in his career.

“I didn’t really have a chance to work on myself the last two offseasons,” Thybulle explained. “The first one was COVID and there were no gyms. The second one, I was working to win a medal at the Olympics with Australia. So there wasn’t a lot of space for me to just work on Matisse. So this is my first chance to have a whole offseason, a real traditional offseason, and dedicated solely to improving myself.”

It remains to be seen if the work Thybulle put in on the offensive end will help the team and himself, but it’s obvious he is taking the work seriously. It is equally obvious that Philadelphia needs him to take that next step on offense.

Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle spent summer working out with Damian Lillard

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle worked out with Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard over the summer.

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is one of the best defenders in the league. As he prepares for his fourth season, the defensive star out of Washington already has All-Defensive team appearances on his resume in recognition of how he disrupts opposing game plans.

The biggest criticism of Thybulle remains his work on the offensive end.

In his third season in the league, Thybulle shot 31.3% from deep on 2.2 attempts per game and just 28.6% from deep in the playoffs. His postseason was wrecked by his vaccination status: He was unable to play in Toronto in the first round. Canada has since changed its vaccination rules, so he is allowed to play in Toronto in the 2022-23 season.

After the Sixers were eliminated in the second round, Thybulle vowed to become an offensive asset. Per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Thybulle worked out with Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard as well as other prominent shooting figures:

Thybulle spent time over the summer working out with Portland Trail Blazers perennial All-Star Damian Lillard and renowned shooting coach Phil Beckner in Phoenix among other cities. Improving his outside shooting was one of his focuses. He also went to Los Angeles to work on his ball handling and finishing around the basket with Chicago Bulls All-Star DeMar DeRozan under the direction of ball-handling wiz Johnny Stephene, aka Dribble2Much and HandleLife Johnny.

It is clear Thybulle took this summer seriously. As the Sixers are about to embark on training camp on Tuesday, they could absolutely use a much more offensive-minded Thybulle to help them chase their championship.

3 Sixers who have the most to prove in 2022-23 season

Here are three members of the Philadelphia 76ers with the most to prove in the upcoming 2022-23 season.

For the Philadelphia 76ers to have the success they believe they can in a tough Eastern Conference, they will need certain players to step up.

Of course, the Sixers will rely on Joel Embiid to drive this team’s championship chase. The big fella is arguably the best big man in the league, and his health and play will ultimately determine how far the Sixers go in the 2023 playoffs.

Beyond Embiid, three players stand out as having the most to prove this season. These three will be considered X-factors as the Sixers move forward.

Here are the three with the most to prove:

2019 NBA redraft has Sixers taking Naz Reid with Matisse Thybulle gone

In a 2019 redraft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Naz Reid with Matisse Thybulle long off the board.

The 2019 NBA draft was an interesting one for the Philadelphia 76ers. They only focused on one player, Matisse Thybulle, and traded up four spots to grab him from the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers selected Thybulle at No 20, and the defensive standout from Washington has been terrific on that end of the floor. He has even made the NBA’s all-defensive teams.

In a 2019 redraft put together by Bleacher Report, Thybulle goes No. 10 due to what he has done at the NBA level and the Sixers end up selecting Naz Reid with the 24th pick. For this exercise, Sixers Wire assumes Philadelphia kept the 24th pick instead of moving up to 20.

B/R on Reid:

Naz Reid has quietly become one of the league’s more reliable backup centers over the last two seasons.

During that stretch, he’s averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 0.8 threes in only 17.4 minutes per game. (That equates to 19.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.6 threes per 75 possessions). He’s hit 34.7 percent of his threes, too.

Reid would have been a great backup center to Joel Embiid; he would be a long-term solution due to his youth and his ability to do a variety of things on the basketball court. He has had a solid career with the Minnesota Timberwolves after going undrafted.

Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle in the gym working on finishing at the basket

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is back in the gym working on finishing around the basket.

The Philadelphia 76ers are getting set to begin training camp at the end of September, so there is not much time left for players to get their final preparation work in before camp begins.

Matisse Thybulle, known for his elite defensive work, has been spotted in the gym recently working on his offensive game. He was working on his dribbling and ball-handling, and now he is working on finishing at the basket.

Thybulle is working with a personal coach who goes by “dribble2much” on Instagram, and he posted a video on Tuesday of Thybulle in the gym working on finishing moves around the basket.

In his third NBA season, Thybulle averaged 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds as he continued to show that he is elite on the defensive end, but his offense still needs work. While most would like to see him work on his 3-point shooting, the fact that he is working on offensive moves is still a good sign for him as he and the Sixers move forward.

New mock trade has Sixers sending Matisse Thybulle to Pistons in a deal

A new mock trade has the Philadelphia 76ers sending Matisse Thybulle to the Detroit Pistons in a deal.

Training camp in the NBA is right around the corner and now is the time for teams to prepare for the grind of the upcoming season, but there is still time to make a move here and there to get the team ready.

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to be at the top of the Eastern Conference when the playoffs roll around in April, and they expect to seriously contend for a title. They have made some solid moves in the offseason, but there could still be a minor move made to help solidify the bench unit.

A mock trade from Bleacher Report has the Sixers sending Matisse Thybulle to the Detroit Pistons for some bench help.

Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle in the gym working on his ball-handling

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is back in the gym working on his ball-handling.

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is already considered one of the best defensive players in the league, He has developed rather quickly on that end and has been named to two All-Defensive Teams already.

Where Thybulle continues to come up short is on the offensive end. He has not yet made an impact on that end.

As he prepares for his fourth season in the league, Thybulle has to be able to contribute on offense to become a legitimate two-way player. He vowed after the 2021-22 season ended that he would become an asset on the offensive end and a video has surfaced of him working on his ball-handling in the gym.

While some would probably rather see Thybulle putting up a bunch of jumpers, one can assume he is working on the jumper as well. It doesn’t hurt to also work on the handle to free himself for a jumper or even get to the basket. He has the ability to be an offensive asset.
